Event Pokémon

Event Pokémon are Pokémon that are distributed at Nintendo promotional events, such as movie premiers, expositions, festivals, places like PokéPark, real-life Pokémon Center stores and sometimes found in bonus disks or specially transferred from another game. They typically have a special OT and ID number indicating their authenticity and usually a special promotional Ribbon from Generation III onward. In Generation IV, most event Pokémon are distributed in Cherish Balls, special Poké Balls that exist solely for event distribution. Event Pokémon are usually desired because they are holding a rare item and/or know at least one special move that would otherwise be impossible to have via leveling up, TMs, HMs, move tutors, or even breeding.

Generation I

• Mew: Mew is obtainable only in Nintendo promotional events, historically through a direct trade. Mew can also be obtained by using the Mew glitch. The Mew glitch also enable countless other normal and rarely-seen glitched Pokémon to be seen and captured, although some of them have been known to cause trouble to people's games.

Generation II

• Celebi: In the Japanese version of Pokémon Crystal, players could use the Pokémon Mobile System to obtain a GS Ball as an event item which they could take to Ilex Forest. Using it at the forest's shrine would prompt an encounter where a wild Celebi could be encountered.

Generation III

• Mew: The Old Sea Map e-card could be obtained from an event which could then be scanned for players of Emerald to receive the item in-game. It could then be used to access Faraway Island where Mew could be found.
• Lugia and Ho-Oh: The Mystic Ticket e-card could be obtained from an event, allowing players to access Navel Rock in-game by using the item in FireRed and LeafGreen or Emerald. Lugia and Ho-Oh could then be found there.
• Celebi: A Japanese Bonus Disc for Pokémon Colosseum allows players to receive Celebi.
• Jirachi: People who pre-ordered Colosseum would receive a bonus disk that could download a Jirachi to their GBA game. In Europe, Jirachi can be downloaded from Channel after the game is completed.
• Deoxys: The Aurora Ticket e-card could be obtained in an event, allowing players to access Birth Island and battle Deoxys after completing a puzzle.

Generation IV

• Darkrai: Movie-going players of Diamond and Pearl were given a Darkrai with the special moves Roar of Time and Spacial Rend to commemorate the movie Dialga VS Palkia VS Darkrai. Darkrai can also be obtained after doing a mission in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia and transferring it over to Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum. This Darkrai has Dark Void even though it is level 50. Various stores also gave away Darkrai in America, Europe and Korea. The Member Card, which grants access to Newmoon Island, was available for download to Japanese Platinum games via the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.
• Shaymin: Movie-going players were given a Shaymin to commemorate the movie, Giratina and the Sky's Bouquet: Shaymin. In the United States, Shaymin were given out at the Toys "R" Us event in February 2009. Shaymin is located at the Flower Paradise in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, which can be accessed from Route 224 after obtaining Oak's Letter, which is currently not legitimately obtainable.
• Arceus: Currently it is not possible to legitimately obtain an Arceus or the Azure Flute. In Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum it is located in the Hall of Origin, accessible after playing the Azure Flute atop Mt. Coronet.

Nintendo promotional event Pokémon

Periodically, Nintendo hosts or sponsors parties and events for fans, often in connection to the premier of a new game or movie. They are especially notable in that certain rare Pokémon and items in the games, as well as cards and other things, are only available for a limited time from them. The methods used to transfer Pokémon and items to a game have varied over time, and include direct link trading and physical reception from an e-Card via Mystery Events. Wireless reception from a Wonder Spot and Nintendo Wi-FI Connection via Mystery Gift were also used. Other methods may occur in the future.

Note that all of the Pokémon with specific natures cannot have a different nature, gender, ability or shiny condition. For Pokémon obtained in Generation IV, the dates do not need to be the dates the events were held. This is because the date is based on the one set on the DS.
