In A Bout with Sprout, the characters visited Earl's Pokémon Academy, where he made several brief appearances as comic relief, wearing a tutu and constantly twirling around.

At the end of the episode, Earl offered Brock to stay in the academy and teach dance with him but he declined.

In the manga

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

In Pokémon Adventures, Earl had an academy named "Earl Dervish's Pokémon Academy". It first appeared in the Gold, Silver & Crystal chapter, when Professor Oak went to meet Crystal and give her a Pokédex. Crystal was a helper at the academy, which was in very poor shape and low on money. It is later revealed during the Emerald chapter that Emerald arrived at the academy on that same day, after the Trick Master sent him there. Emerald admired Crystal and decided to stay, not knowing that Oak hired Crystal to complete the Pokédex for him, and the next day she left the academy.

Emerald then spent a large part of his childhood in Earl's academy, and Earl even told Professor Oak about him. Not long after Crystal left, she started using the money she received for her work to completely renovate the academy, earning Emerald's respect.

Earl in Pokémon Pocket Monsters

Earl makes an appearance in the Johto saga of Pokémon Pocket Monsters.

  • He speaks strangely in the Japanese version.
  • Earl is notable for changing the order of the words in his sentences, somewhat like Yoda from Star Wars, although his grammar is generally incorrect. For example, when asking a potential student if they want to learn from him, he will ask, "What you want to know? Want to be a winner is you?" This may be a reference to the Engrish used in the NES game Pro Wrestling, where the phrase "A WINNER IS YOU" is shown at the end of a winning match. Earl does not talk like this in Pokémon Stadium 2, which may be due to the quite extensive scope of the Pokémon academy in this game.
    • In the German version of Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, Earl is portrayed with a French accent on top of his incorrect grammar. This is dropped in the German version of Pokémon Stadium 2, similar to the case in the English translation.
  • Earl's Japanese name is Giovanni, the English name of the well-known Team Rocket boss.
  • Earl's last name is "Dervish", a word in the English language, which can mean (among other things) "One that possesses abundant and often frenzied energy". This serves to reinforce the idea of his eccentric personality. It could also be a nod to the phrase "whirling dervish," as while leading the player to his school during Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, he twirls around at every turn along the way and when ever the player talks to him.
