Blurb
The episode begins with Ash, Misty and Brock deciding whether to go to Onix Tunnel just before sunset. Brock says that it is a tunnel full of Onix, while Ash replies by saying that Onix are weak to water suggesting he will use Squirtle. Then he remembers he left Squirtle with the Squirtle Squad. Misty replies by saying that her water Pokémon will do the job. Finally they decide to wait until morning to enter the tunnel. Jigglypuff follows them, and Madam Muchmoney follows closely behind. Next, Jessie, James, and MTR are shown at the cave's entrance, and tell us that it is morning. They attempt to pass the tunnel, but three Onix are blocking the way. James calls out his James. He orders Victreebel to use Razor Leaf, but the Onix don't seem affected by it. They reply by using Rock Throw, hitting their head against the wall making huge boulders fall from the ceiling. Next Jessie calls her Jessie only to be Bind by one of the Onix. After that, Jessie throws Meowth at the Onix in order to use Fury Swipes. The Onix reply by using Rock Throw again. TRT runs out of the tunnel, and decides to steal Misty water Pokémon in order to counter the Onix. Jessie comes out of its ball only to be returned back. Meanwhile, Ash is sitting by the water washing his face, Brock is doing exercises with Brock and Misty is scolding her Psyduck for its habit of putting its hands on its head. Brock asks Pineco if he's ready to have some fun, Pineco replying with his usual explosion. Ash begins to notice a somewhat familiar Madame Muchmoney. Misty says that it's obviously the Snubbull that belongs to Madame Muchmoney. Then, a short flashback follows, with Snubbull biting Meowth's tail, which was part of TRT's plan to lure Snubbull into their trap. Ash wonders what it is doing here with Misty thinking that probably Snubbull didn't like living in a fancy mansion. Then Ash notices that it could've sniffed something out. Then Snubbull runs away. The gang gives chase to Snubbull. While, they're doing that, Team Rocket in disguise is looking for Misty while daydreaming about the water Pokémon. The scene turns back to the chasing of Snubbull. He runs away, while Jigglypuff appears and starts singing putting them to sleep along with Team Rocket.

Snubbull appears and goes for Meowth's tail only to fall asleep near it. Snubbull steals Jigglypuff's microphone and runs away with it. The scene turns to Ash, Brock and Misty who encounter Jigglypuff. They attempt to run, but Brock stops them, saying there is something different about it. Then Ash notices it doesn't have its microphone. They decide to help it find the microphone. The scene turns to Team Rocket with Jessie deciding to use the pitfall trap. She comes out with a new invention, a shovel combined with a pogo stick. Snubbull appears with the microphone, while Team Rocket is digging. He sneaks behind Meowth biting his tail.

While Ash and friends deliberate on how to pass through a tunnel replete with Onix, two wandering Pokémon—a Snubbull and a Jigglypuff—arrive on the scene together and take a strong enough dislike to each other to threaten drawing everyone else into their conflict.

Plot

The episode begins with Ash, Misty and Brock deciding whether to go to Onix Tunnel just before sunset. Brock says that it is a tunnel full of Onix, while Ash replies by saying that Onix are weak to water suggesting he will use Squirtle. Then he remembers he left Squirtle with the Squirtle Squad. Misty replies by saying that her water Pokémon will do the job. Finally they decide to wait until morning to enter the tunnel. Jigglypuff follows them, and Snubbull follows closely behind. Next, Jessie, James, and Meowth are shown at the cave's entrance, and tell us that it is morning. They attempt to pass the tunnel, but three Onix are blocking the way. James calls out his Victreebel. He orders Victreebel to use Razor Leaf, but the Onix don't seem affected by it. They reply by using Rock Throw, hitting their head against the wall making huge boulders fall from the ceiling. Next Jessie calls her Arbok only to be binded by one of the Onix. After that, Jessie throws Meowth at the Onix in order to use Fury Swipes. The Onix reply by using Rock Throw again. Team Rocket runs out of the tunnel, and decides to steal Misty's Water-type Pokémon in order to counter the Onix. Wobbuffet comes out of his ball only to be returned back. A quick flashback follows, including Psyduck, Staryu, Togepi, Poliwag, and Goldeen.

Meanwhile, Ash is sitting by the water washing his face, Brock is doing exercises with Pineco and Misty is scolding her Psyduck for its habit of putting its hands on its head. Brock asks Pineco if he's ready to have some fun, Pineco replying with his usual explosion. Ash begins to notice a somewhat familiar Snubbull. Misty says that it's obviously the Snubbull that belongs to Madame Muchmoney. Then, a short flashback follows, with Snubbull biting Meowth's tail, which was part of Team Rocket's plan to lure Snubbull into their trap. She runs away, while Jigglypuff appears and starts singing putting them to sleep along with Team Rocket.

Snubbull appears and goes for Meowth's tail only to fall asleep near it. Then she wakes up, with her face scribbled by Jigglypuff and with no sign of Team Rocket. She starts sniffing again, arriving at a small pond. When she looks at her reflection in it, she was shocked to see what happened to her face. Then she turns and sees an angered Jigglypuff is scribbling on a sleeping Pidgey. She sneaks behind Meowth biting his tail.

Jessie picks up Snubbull, saying it is Madam Muchmoney's Snubbull. James thinks it would be a great gift for their boss. A quick flashback with Misty and her Togepi appears followed by Jessie saying she is glad to have a Pokémon to cuddle. Wobbuffet comes out again, while Meowth saying he must choose between him or Snubbull. Team Rocket reply by welcoming Snubbull to the team with Meowth leaving. Next, the gang along with Jigglypuff arrive to Team Rocket's food pitfall trap. Jigglypuff runs to it falling in the hole. Ash sends his Bulbasaur to get Jigglypuff out of the hole. It becomes angry, runs toward two more pitfalls with Bulbasaur taking it out of both holes. It angers again and runs, while the gang follows it.

In the meantime, Team Rocket notices Meowth's absence. Snubbull jumps from Jessie's hands and runs away. The scene turns to Meowth deciding to return to Jessie and James but quickly changing his mind. Next the gang is shown searching for Snubbull. The scene reverts to Meowth standing near the Onix Tunnel with a sad Jigglypuff joining him. Then Team Rocket's motto follows. When Meowth tries to tell his line, he gets interrupted by Wobbuffet. Jessie sends her Arbok and Misty tries to send one of her Pokémon, but Psyduck pops out instead forcing Misty to recall it. Misty tries again and sends out Poliwag. Poliwag dodges Arbok then hits it with Water Gun. James sends out Victreebel and Ash sends out Chikorita. James orders Victreebel to use Razor Leaf on Poliwag but Chikorita uses Vine Whip to break the attack. Poliwag attacks Arbok with DoubleSlap and Chikorita uses Razor Leaf on Victreebel. Chikorita attempts to use Vine Whip but is countered by Wobbuffet. Poliwag uses Water Gun succeeding in breaking Wobbuffet's Counter and throwing him, Victreebel and Arbok back to Team Rocket. Pikachu uses Thunderbolt and sends them blasting off. Snubbull runs away leaving the microphone behind.

Jigglypuff picks up the microphone singing, putting Ash, Misty and Brock to sleep again then scribbling their faces. As they sleep, Jigglypuff enters the tunnel and encounters the three Onix. It starts singing again, putting them to sleep. The gang then passes through the tunnel seeing the sleeping Onix with their faces scribbled. In the final shot, Team Rocket is seen passing through the tunnel with Jessie tripping and waking up the Onix. Then the scene cuts to the outside.

Trivia

 • This is the first time Wobbuffet shouts out his name at the end of Team Rocket motto.
 • This is one of the episodes where Jigglypuff sings its song the most with Ash, Misty, and Brock hearing it twice, Team Rocket hearing it once and the Onix that dwell in the Onix tunnel once.
 • Ash mentions that he no longer has his Squirtle. In the dub, however, this episode aired slightly out of order, and aired before the episode where Squirtle returned to the Squirtle Squad, causing confusion for viewers, as well as spoiling the ending to another episode.
 • Throughout the entire episode it is stated that Water-Pokémon are the only way to defeat Onix, however there is no mention of Grass-type Pokémon who are just as strong as Water-types against Onix.

Errors

 • Brock says that the food pitfall trap is familiar, but the only other one so far was in the Orange Islands when Brock was with Professor Ivy.
 • When James commands his Victreebel to use Razor Leaf on the group of Onix in the Onix Tunnel the leaves bounce off them and appear to do no damage, however in reality Onix (being part Rock and part Ground-type) is extremely weak to Grass-type attacks.
