Synopsis
Template:Incomplete synopsis
Ash and friends have delivered the GS Ball safely to Kurt and are heading to the Azalea Town Gym for the next badge. Misty thinks Ash will have a tough time with without Charizard but Ash is confident that Cyndaquil has the firepower he needs. The Azalea Gym is a large dome with a forest-like environment inside. Misty becomes nervous, then a Caterpie drops down in front of her and she freaks. A boy standing up on a tree branch says that this is in fact the Gym and that bug Pokémon are the best. Misty isn’t thrilled. Ash introduces himself and the boy says he’s Bugsy, the Gym leader...

Trivia
- This episode is the first time a Metapod in the anime has been seen using Tackle — or indeed, any move other than Harden.
- Ash and Misty both receive Lure Balls and Brock receives a Heavy Ball from Kurt at the end of this episode. Although Ash and Misty will both use their Lure Balls, Brock's Heavy Ball (as well as the Fast Balls Ash and Misty received in the last episode) are never actually used (or even mentioned) by the characters.
- In this episode, Team Rocket tries to catch Pikachu by digging the underground while Ash is in a Gym battle. This happened in a future episode too.
- Coincidentally, these episodes show Ash's battle against the second leader of the region.
Errors
- At one point Ash says "I'll save Chikorita for later, and use Pikachu now." Chikorita had just been defeated — he meant to say Cyndaquil.
- Ash commands Chikorita to use Sweet Smell on Spinarak, when the actual move is Sweet Scent.
- On occasion throughout the episode, Misty would talk and Togepi's lips would move, but it was not talking.
- Bugsy commands Spinarak to use Poison String attack, followed by Poison Sting attack.
