Clefairy and the Moon Stone (Japanese: ピッピとつきのいし Pippi and the Moon Stone) is the sixth episode of the Pokémon anime. It was first broadcast in Japan on May 6, 1997, and in the United States on September 15, 1998.
Synopsis
Ash, Misty and Brock were hiking toward Mt. Moon. A meteor called "The Moon Stone" crashed into the mountain in prehistoric times. Near the foot of the mountain, they encountered a man being attacked by a flock of Zubat. Dexter reported that Zubat live in caves and hate to fly outside in daylight.
Misty reminded Ash that the man needed help, and Ash ordered Pikachu to fire a ThunderShock. The Zubat flew away, and the man, who was wearing a lab coat, squeezed Ash and thanked him profusely. He introduced himself as Seymour the Scientist. He was upset because someone had strung lights inside the nearby cave, that disrupted the Pokémon who lived inside—not just the Zubat, but the Paras and Sandshrew as well.
Seymour believed that the attackers were after the Moon Stone. He said that it was a massive boulder, believed to be older than a million years old, and hidden deep in the caves under the mountain. Fragments of the Stone could increase Pokémon's power. Seymour theorized that this was because the Pokémon came from outer space, and the Moon Stone was their spacecraft—which means the Stone belonged to the Pokémon, and that the humans must leave it alone.
A Clefairy bounced past, carrying something. Seymour stopped Ash from trying to catch it. The Clefairy is trapped by Meowth, who is in turn challenged by Ash. Brock and Ash agreed that they have to stop Team Rocket, before they make any more trouble—which immediately led to James and Jessie reciting their motto.
Team Rocket freely admitted to putting up the lights; Meowth even says they want a Moon Stone so they can power up their Pokémon. Ash and Brock challenged Jessie and James. Jessie summoned Ekans, while Ash called Butterfree. James called on Koffing, and Brock used Zubat, which he said he captured just before they entered the cave.
James ordered Koffing to generate a Smog attack. Ash countered with Butterfree's Whirlwind, and Brock asked Zubat to use Double Team; the two Pokémon turned the Smog back on Team Rocket, much to their surprise.
Misty and Seymour made a run for it as Ekans attacked Butterfree and Koffing slammed Zubat. Brock told Zubat to "go Supersonic!" The high-pitched signal confused Koffing and Ekans, and they attacked each other. Ash asked Butterfree for another Whirlwind, hoping to "blow them all the way out of the cave!" Team Rocket flew away again, but Brock and Ash suddenly realized they had lost track of Meowth.
Misty and Seymour had been following the Clefairy, which made its way out of the cave. They followed it up the mountain, where Meowth was waiting for them. He demanded the Moon Stone. Misty summoned her Staryu by dropping its Poké Ball into the river. She ordered a Swift attack, followed immediately by a Water Gun. The water stream hit Meowth in the face; he rapidly filled up with water, then flew away like a balloon as the water was expelled from his mouth.
Brock fed all the Pokémon his special, secret recipe Pokémon food. Seymour tasted it and deemed it "not bad;" Ash followed suit and found it awful! Meanwhile, Clefairy and Pikachu were having a conversation on a nearby rock. They hopped away, followed by the rest of the group.
They arrive at another cave, where they find the core of the Moon Stone. Clefairy added its stone to the ring at the base of the core, which completed the circuit. All the small stones, then the large core, began to glow blue in the moonlight. Dozens of Clefairy approached and began to dance around the Moon Stone. Misty, Ash and Brock play "charades" with Pikachu to learn that the Clefairy were praying to the Stone. Seymour concluded that humans are supposed to ride the Stone back out to the stars, but his rapture is interrupted by the return of Team Rocket.
Seymour attacked Team Rocket to keep them from the Stone, but Meowth tripped him and took him out of the action because his glasses fell off. Ash attacked with Pikachu, while Brock summoned Onix; as usual, Jessie and James called on Ekans and Koffing again. Jessie ordered a Dig attack, and James orders up a SmokeScreen. Ash then summoned Pidgeotto and ordered it to Whirlwind the smoke away. When the smoke cleared, Team Rocket was gone, and the Moon Stone with them.
Brock ordered Onix to Dig and follow Team Rocket underground, while the humans and other Pokémon ran through the caves. One of the Clefairy retrieved Seymour's glasses for him.
Team Rocket was sliding downhill with the Stone on a sled. Onix appeared suddenly, upsetting the sled. Onix attempted to Tackle Team Rocket, but Koffing countered, and both Pokémon fell to the ground stunned. Seymour and the Clefairy appeared from Onix's tunnel. The Clefairy used a Metronome attack to hypnotize the humans, then what appeared to be a Hyper Beam sent Team Rocket flying off once more.
Chips of the Moon Stone drifted down from the sky; as they fell on the Clefairy, many of the Clefairy evolved into Clefable. Seymour stayed with the Clefairy and Clefable, hoping to someday visit outer space with them.
Ash, Misty and Brock moved on toward Cerulean City. Gary had left graffiti on the sign stating, "Gary was here! Ash is a loser!" Ash took off down the road at a run as the episode ended.

Errors
- When Ash commands Butterfree to Whirlwind away the Smokescreen, Brock commands his Zubat to use Double Team yet it uses Whirlwind as well. This is presumably an error in translating from Japanese where Brock most likely ordered Zubat to "team up" with Butterfree.
- When Ekans dives underground, Arbok's cry can be heard as well as Ekans's.
- While reading the sign pointing to Cerulean City, Ash is missing a glove.
Dub edits
- The "last time" scene at the beginning edited Nibi Gym to Pewter Gym.
- While the Narrator's statement was mostly the same in the beginning scene, it skips over the fact that they are heading to Cerulean City in the dub.
- Seymour talks about romance in the Japanese version, while he recites poetry in the English version.
- Seymour's two main virtues are changed from Love and Courage (original) to Knowledge and Research (dub). When he announces the virtues, the Japanese version has them written in the background. 4Kids erases all of the kanji from the English version.
- "Cerulean City" is translated on the sign directing towards it. Gary's message changes from "Shigeru is the best! Satoshi is an idiot!" to "Gary was here! Ash is a loser!". Also, it had Gary's transparent image superimposed over the sign. It showed him pulling down his eyelid and sticking his tongue out at the same time, a childish Japanese taunting gesture.
- Ash makes a reference to the Macarena when Pikachu uses charades to speak to him. The original line references the Bon Dance.
- In the original version, they stated that the Clefairy were protecting their god, referring to the large Moon Stone. Though the general gist of the dialog remained in the dub, the fact that the Moon Stone was seen by the Clefairy as a deity was not referenced.
