Duskull (Japanese: ヨマワル Yomawaru) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves into Dusclops starting at level 37, who evolves into Dusknoir when traded holding a Reaper Cloth.

Biology

Physiology

Duskull is styled after a traditional personification of Death, the Grim Reaper. It resembles a small hooded masked form in a black robe with a crossbones drawing on its back. In its "shiny" alternate coloring, its robe is curiously bright red, possibly inspired by the Devil. Its mask resembles the front of a skull. It also seems to have a single eye that floats between the eye sockets in its mask.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

While Duskull appears to have the typical movepool for a Template:Type2, it lacks the capability to use Template:Type2 moves such as Thunder or Thunderbolt. Yet, it can learn Ice Beam and Blizzard. Duskull also happens to be more defensive than its fellow Ghost Pokémon. As shown in Another One Gabites the Dust!, and 3D games such as Pokemon XD, it can change the position of its eye. Duskull is also able to become invisible and go through walls, abilities that can be considered common among Ghost-type Pokémon.

Behavior

Duskull is primarily a nocturnal Pokémon. It is said that this Pokémon will spirit away disobedient children, and it has been described to enjoy the crying of children. Once Duskull chooses a target, it will doggedly pursue the intended victim until the break of dawn, and may become invisible to sneak up on its prey.

Habitat

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

It appears to be an active hunter that pursues its prey relentlessly. However, it is occasionally found with the Kasib Berry.

In the anime

May being scared by a Duskull

Duskull first appeared in Camp Pikachu, scaring the Pichu Brothers.

Duskull also had a brief appearance in Get the Show on the Road!. While May was on her way to Professor Birch's, Duskull popped up in front of her and scared her.

It was revealed in a flashback in Disaster of Disguise that Timmy Grimm's Dusclops was originally a Duskull he found alone in a bush.

Two Duskull were among the several Ghost Pokémon living in abandoned mine in Fear Factor Phony. Since the ghost Pokémon couldn't stand the partying Psychic Pokémon in the nearby town, Team Rocket decided to help the ghosts because they knew what it's like to "lose sleep over a bunch of twerps."

A Duskull accompanied the Banette that scared off Meowth in Ghoul Daze!.

A Duskull appeared in Another One Gabites the Dust!.

Trivia

  • Duskull is the only Pokémon with Levitate whose evolutions do not have the ability.

Origin

Duskull may be based on the Grim Reaper or the bogeyman. The Japanese bogeyman is called the Namahage.

Name origin

Duskull's name is probably a combination of dusk and skull.

Yomawaru is a combination of 妖魔 yōma, ghost and 悪 waru, bad thing/person. It is also possible that it is derived from 夜回り yomawari, night watch(man) or 夜回る yomawaru, night wanderer. It's also similar to 山童 yamawaro, a hairy, one-eyed spirit, sometimes considered a kappa, present in the Gazu Hyakki Yakō.
