DoubleSlap (Japanese: おうふくビンタ Round Trip Slap) is a damage-dealing Normal-type multi-strike move introduced in Generation I.

Effect

Generation I

DoubleSlap inflicts damage, hitting 2-5 times per use. There is a 37.5% chance that it will hit 2 times, a 37.5% chance that it will hit 3 times, a 12.5% chance that it will hit 4 times, and a 12.5% chance that it will hit 5 times. This gives the attack an average power of 45, ignoring the possibility of missing. Although only the first hit can be a critical hit, each successive hit will deal the same amount of damage.

DoubleSlap will end immediately if it breaks a substitute. Bide and Counter will only acknowledge the last hit of this move.

Generation II

Same as Generation I, but all hits will do damage independently, consequently enabling any of them to be critical.

Generation III

If the target has an Ability which activates upon contact, each hit counts individually, enabling the Ability to activate multiple times.

Generation IV

Same as previous generations, except it will continue attacking after a substitute is broken.

Due to the introduction of the Ability Skill Link, a Pokémon with said Ability will always hit five times when using DoubleSlap, if it does not miss. However, no Pokémon could naturally obtain Skill Link and DoubleSlap until Generation V.

Generation V

Unlike previous generations, if Focus Sash, Focus Band, or Sturdy activate before the last hit is dealt, the following hit will cause the defending Pokémon to faint; however, Focus Band can still activate repeatedly to prevent fainting, but each chance is independent of the previous one. Each hit will cause Weak Armor to activate.

If the target is holding a Rocky Helmet, the user is damaged for each hit.

Trivia

  • Like most multi-strike moves, this move can hit the opponent up to five times, despite the move's name being DoubleSlap, suggesting that it would only hit up to two times.
    • However, the Japanese, Chinese, and Korean names for DoubleSlap do not indicate a certain number of strikes.
