Cynthia, as she appears in the anime

Cynthia was first mentioned in Lucian's flashback in An Elite Meet and Greet. She made her first appearance in Top-Down Training!. Her Japanese voice actress is 櫻井智 Tomo Sakurai and her English voice actress is Emily Jenness.

She was first seen battling against Lucian with her Garchomp on television. She then arrived in Amity Square where she was studying ancient tablets. Paul then challenged her to a battle. She defeated four of Paul's Pokémon using only her Garchomp.

Cynthia used a Rayquaza in Malice in Wonderland!, but this was only an illusion created by Mismagius.

In the games

Cynthia helps the main character against Team Galactic in a point in the game. She is also found on Route 214 after the player has defeated Crasher Wake and received the Fen Badge. She gives the player the Secretpotion to get past the Psyduck group on Route 210. She is very interested in mythology and history, and spends her time exploring various sites associated with Legendary Pokémon of the Sinnoh region.

Later, she reappears as the League Champion.

Quotes

Before battle

"One look at you tells me many things about you. Together, you and your Pokémon overcame all the challenges you faced, however difficult. It means that you've triumphed over any personal weaknesses, too. The power you learned... I can feel it emanating from you. That's enough talking. Let's get on with why you're here. I, Cynthia, accept your challenge as the Pokémon League Champion! There won't be any letup from me!"

OR

"Have you been keeping well? Thank you for Mt. Coronet. I'm truly grateful. Together, you and your Pokémon overcame all the challenges you faced, however difficult. It means that you've triumphed over any personal weaknesses, too. The power you learned... I can feel it emanating from you. But that's enough talk. Let's get on with why you're here. As the Pokémon League Champion, I accept your challenge!"

The bottom quote is only said the very first time you challenge her. After winning at least once, it permanently changes to the top quote.

During battle

"I can't remember the last time I was put in a corner like this!"

"I won't let this end yet! This match is too fun to let it end this easily!"

When defeated

"Just a few moments ago, you were the most powerful challenger. And just now, you became the most powerful of all the Trainers. You are now our newest Champion!

In the Pokémon Special manga

She first appeared in Eterna City just after the trio's starters evolved. She lent them some help before the Gym challenge. She later appears after Berlitz's Gym challenge in Pastoria City to help some injured Psyduck.

Trivia

Names

Language Name Origin
Japanese シロナ Shirona
English Cynthia Latinized form of Greek Κυνθια (Kynthia) which means "woman from Kynthos". An epithet of the virgin huntress Artemis, because the slopes of Mount Kynthos were believed to be her favorite hunting ground. Also sometimes used as a poetic name for the moon.
Possibly chosen due to similarity to "synthesis", or combining different pieces into one entity, which is a reference to the fact she combines several types in her arsenal.
French Cynthia
German Cynthia
Italian Camilla Probably derivated from Camilla, an Amazon warrior described in the Aeneid.
Spanish Cintia
Korean 난천 Nancheon
