Croconaw (Japanese: アリゲイツ Alligates) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves from Totodile starting at level 18 and evolves into Feraligatr starting at level 30.

Biology

Physiology

Croconaw are medium-sized, crocodile-like reptilian Pokémon, mostly blue in coloration with accentuations of yellow and black eye markings. Croconaw has three clusters of red spikes on their body, one with three prongs on its head like a crest, one with two prongs on its back, and one diamond-shaped spike on its tail. Croconaw has a set of pronounced, yellow-colored jaws, and although Croconaw has been described as always having forty-eight fangs lining its mouth, only six are discernible, with only four visible when the mouth is closed. They possess an asymmetrical, yellow-colored pattern on their chests that somewhat resembles a spotted animal skin.

Special abilities

Along with the usual Template:Type2 abilities, their powerful jaws are capable of regrowing fangs that are lost, and their teeth are barbed like a fishing hook, making them impossible to pull out with ordinary strength.

Behavior

It opens its huge jaws wide when attacking.

Habitat

Croconaw mainly live near water, but are rare in the wild.

Diet

In the anime

Major appearances

A Croconaw was used by one of two twin brothers in The Champ Twins in a battle against Ash and Dawn. The other twin used Quilava.

Khoury's Totodile evolved into a Croconaw in Bagged Then Tagged!.

Minor appearances

In the beginning of Celebi: Voice of the Forest, Ash battled against a Pokémon Trainer who had a Croconaw.

Marina owned a Croconaw named Wani-Wani that was used in a fair few battles as well as against Attila and Hun. As revealed in A Stand-Up Sit-Down!, it became a Feraligatr.

Ranger Mason, a Forest Ranger of Mt. Silver, had a Croconaw in Mother Of All Battles.

A Croconaw appeared in Camping It Up!.

Trivia

• The design on Croconaw's belly reverses direction in the Generation III sprites and onward. The pattern on the back sprite, however, is the same in every generation that Croconaw is present.
• Not counting starters in spin off games, Croconaw evolves faster than any other Water-type starter (evolving at level 30). In fact, it is also the fastest starter to reach its final stage, Feraligatr.
• In Generation II, Croconaw had a spike that curved back like hair on its head, this was corrected in Crystal.

Origin

This species of Pokémon is based on crocodylians. Also, the head spikes and the pattern on the chest seem to be based on the wild hair and animal-skin cloth worn by a caveman.

Name origin

Croconaw's name is a combination of crocodile and gnaw, though it may also involve "maw". Its Japanese name is based on alligator.
