Croagunk (Japanese: グレッグル Gureggru) is a dual-type Poison/Fighting Pokémon.

It evolves into Toxicroak starting at level 37.

Biology

Physiology

Croagunk resembles a dark blue bipedal frog, with a white band around its waist area and red and black markings on its hands and feet. Its coloring and poisonous nature suggest that it is based on poison dart frogs. The markings on its body make it look like a Muay Thai fighter, and its jutting teeth make it appear to be wearing a mouthguard. The black around its eyes and the white bands make it look like an injured fighter with black eyes and broken ribs. Its cheeks are filled with a poison that runs to its fingers, allowing it to poison opponents by stabbing them.

Gender differences

The two white stripes that run across Croagunk's abdomen will be higher up if it is a female.

Special abilities

Whenever its middle finger glows purple, it appears to be channeling its poison via its skin and onto its hand to use its Poison moves. Croagunk can have the ability Anticipation which makes the Croagunk shudder if the foe has a super effective, instant KOing move, or a move like Selfdestruct.

Behavior

Habitat

Croagunk live in moist areas close to bodies of water.

Trivia

  • Croagunk's English name, along with numerous others, was released on 13th February 2007. Due to the poor quality of the image, it was believed its name was "Croalurk". It was later officially revealed to be Croagunk.
  • Croagunk is able to learn X-Scissor even though it doesn't have claws or scythes. Its evolution has claws though.
  • Croagunk is the mascot of Pastoria City.
  • Croagunk and its evolution Toxicroak are the only Pokémon to have the Poison/Fighting type combination, and as such, they are the only Pokémon to have a double weakness to Psychic attacks.
    • For that matter, Croakunk and Toxicroak are the only Poison-types to have any double weakness.
  • Despite being based on a frog, it is unable to breed with other frog Pokémon like Politoed, since it belongs to the Humanshape egg group exclusively.
  • Croagunk is one of few Pokémon to have its hand-held game sprite differ from its 3-D image. While in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl and Pokémon Platinum it is shown to have pink cheeks, its 3-D sprites show it with yellow-orange cheeks, this is also true for it in the anime.
  • Croagunk and its evolution, are the only Template:Type2s to learn SmellingSalt through breeding.

Origin

Croagunk may have been based on the poison dart frog. It's toothy grin may be a nod to the manga and anime series Sgt. Frog.

Name origin

Croagunk is probably a combination of croak and gunk. The Japanese name comes ケロケロ kerokero, the Japanese onomatopoeia for a frog's croaking, and げろげろ gerogero, the Japanese word that's used to describe something disgusting. It may also be derived from 汚れ yogore, filth.

In other languages

  • German: Glibunkel - From Glibber (gunk) and Unke (fire-bellied toad).
  • French: Cradopaud - From crapaud (toad) and crado, a familiar term for dirty.
  • Korean: 삐딱구리 Ppittakguri
