Crash damage is the damage taken by the attacking Pokémon when if fails to successfully use certain moves.

Mechanics

Moves with crash damage are boosted by Reckless.

Generation I

In the handheld games, if a move that has crash damage misses, the user will take 1 HP of crash damage. In the Pokémon Stadium series, the crash damage is equal to 1/8 of the damage it would have dealt.

Generation II

If a move that has crash damage misses or is blocked by a protection move, the user will take crash damage equal to 1/8 of the damage it would have dealt.

Generation III

If a move that has crash damage misses or is blocked by a protection move, the user will take crash damage equal to 1/2 of the damage it would have dealt.

Generation IV

If a move that has crash damage misses, is blocked by a protection move, or the target is immune to the attack due to its type, the user will take crash damage equal to 1/2 of the target's maximum HP.

Generation V onward

If a move that has crash damage misses, is blocked by a protection move, or the target is immune to the attack due to its type, the user will take crash damage equal to 1/2 of the user's maximum HP (rounded down).

In the anime

Scrafty being hurt by crash damage

In Saved by the Beldum, when Gilbert's Hitmonlee failed to hit Pikachu with High Jump Kick, it hurt itself.

In Wheel of Frontier, Greta's Medicham was hurt when its High Jump Kick failed to hit Snorlax.

In Meowth's Scrafty Tactics!, a Scrafty was hurt when when Ash's Tepig dodged its High Jump Kick.

Ash's Scraggy and Hawlucha have been seen to hurt themselves upon missing when using High Jump Kick.

In Showdown at the Shalour Gym!, Korrina's Mienfoo took crash damage after Ash's Hawlucha dodged its High Jump Kick.
