Kurio met Ash and Go soon after they arrived in Ecruteak City after Pikachu had hit his Pokémon with Thunderbolt. He later explained why he used his Fearow and Cyndaquil to pretend to be Ho-Oh and introduced them to his grandfather Jiei. They later headed up the Bell Tower where they encountered a Misdreavus and Stantler who were standing guard. Briefly distracted by Stantler's illusions, the group reached the top of the tower after Go caught Misdreavus and Stantler. Everyone called out to Ho-Oh without success and Kurio proceeded to leave with Ash and Go, only for Jiei to call out after seeing it but it disappeared before Jiei could see it.
