The Celadon Gym (Japanese: タマムシジム Tamamushi Gym) is the official Gym of Celadon City. It is based on Grass-type Pokémon. The Gym Leader is Erika. Trainers who defeat her receive the Rainbow Badge.

In all versions and adaptations of Pokémon, Celadon Gym is consistently rendered as a greenhouse.

In the games, the Celadon Gym is a garden full of Trainers, all of which are female. It is impossible to reach Erika without fighting at least two other Trainers and using Cut. In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the Gym consists of lanes lined with flower pots and flower-covered archways that form a maze.

In every game in which the Celadon Gym is present since Pokémon Red and Blue, an old man has appeared outside the Gym, cackling about the girls inside. In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, his text has been changed, and instead he comments on the presence of "tough Trainers."

A field based on the Gym also appears in Pokémon Stadium's Gym Leader Castle and Stadium 2's Kanto Gym Leader Castle.

In the main series

Celadon Gym appeared in Pokémon Scent-sation!. Ash wanted to challenge Erika to a Gym battle, but the workers at the Gym refused to allow his entry because he had earlier criticized a perfume shop, saying that all they do is turn men into zombies. They kicked him out of the shop for insulting them. When Ash found out that the Gym is where the perfume was manufactured, he was visibly shocked.

With help from Team Rocket, Ash, in the guise of "Ashley," gained entry into the Gym. However, Pikachu recognized that it was him, and ThunderShocked him to reveal Ash to everyone in the Gym. After challenging Erika, she accepted his challenge, saying it's against Pokémon League rules to refuse a challenge.

Their battle was short-lived due to Team Rocket stealing the perfume. They detonated several bombs for their getaway, setting the Gym ablaze. However, thanks to the Pokémon of Ash, Misty and Brock, the Gym survived. After the fire was put out, Erika gave Ash the Rainbow Badge as a thanks for saving her Gloom from the flames.

Pokémon used in Gym

Erika's Tangela
Tangela
One of Erika's battling Pokémon, Tangela is a strong Pokémon that manages to use its vines and Stun Spore in order to incapacitate the enemy. In its battle against Ash, it managed to take out Bulbasaur by using this combination. Erika then recalled Tangela when Ash sent out his Charmander.

Tangela's known moves are Constrict and Stun Spore.

Erika's Weepinbell
Weepinbell
Weepinbell was the next Pokémon Erika sent out to counter Ash's Charmander. Although Erika thought Charmander would be no match against her Grass-type Pokémon, Weepinbell's Razor Leaf was easily knocked away with Flamethrower, and while the Flycatcher Pokémon was dodging the flaming leaves, it was easily finished off with Skull Bash.

It reappeared in a flashback in Bad to the Bone, where it was defeated in a Gym battle by Otoshi's Marowak.

Weepinbell's only known move is Razor Leaf.

Erika's Gloom
Gloom
Gloom once saved Erika from a Grimer when she was a girl. From that moment onwards, they have become very close friends.

Erika used Gloom as her final Pokémon in her Gym battle against Ash Ketchum. With its horrid scent, it defeated Charmander easily. But before it could fight with Ash's Pikachu, a bomb placed in the Gym by Team Rocket exploded, setting the Gym ablaze.

Even though everyone managed to escape, Gloom was still trapped in the Gym surrounded by flames. Ash rushed into the Gym and rescued Gloom. In gratitude for saving Gloom, Erika gave Ash the Rainbow Badge.

It also reappeared in a flashback in Pikachu's Goodbye and Gotta Catch Ya Later!.

None of Gloom's moves are known.

Celadon Gym in Pokémon Origins

In Pokémon Origins

Red was seen visiting the Celadon Gym in the Pokémon Origins episode File 3 - Giovanni. With his Fire-type Charmeleon at a type advantage, Red was easily able to defeat Erika's Grass-type Pokémon, earning himself the Rainbow Badge.

In the manga

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

Celadon Gym first debuted in Meanwhile... Vileplume! in the Red, Green & Blue arc, where there is a lot of rooms, but one with the Gym Leader Erika has a machine that was used as an experiment to create an Eevee that can change to its evolved forms and back. When Red and Bill finally found Erika they had a 3-3 with Ivysaur, Poliwrath, and Pikachu against Tangela, Bellsprout, and Vileplume which Red lost, but had a trick up his sleeve. Pikachu had used Substitute, making Erika realize that she should heal the Eevee, and she gave Red the Rainbow Badge. It was revealed that there is an archery range nearby that Erika attends daily.

In the TCG

The Celadon Gym was featured in the TCG as both a Japan exclusive Theme Deck and as a card. The following is a list of cards named Celadon City Gym.

Trivia

  • In Generations I and III, Celadon Gym's Gym guide can be found playing the slot machines at the Rocket Game Corner, instead of advising the player on how to defeat Erika.
  • In the games, the Cianwood Gym, the Blackthorn Gym, and the Celadon Gym are the only Gyms that require the use of an HM, as part of a Gym puzzle, in order to progress. Cianwood and Blackthorn's Gyms require Strength in Generation II, while Celadon's requires Cut in all generations except Generation II.
    • Out of these three, Celadon City Gym is the only not to be in Johto.
    • Despite Cut not being required inside the Gym in Generation II, it is required in all Generations to access the Gym itself.
  • In Generation III, Picnicker Tina will ask if the player is a peeping tom, even if they are female.
  • In Generations I, II, and III, the Gym is shaped like the female gender symbol (♀), representing its all-female population of Gym Trainers.
  • In Generation IV, just like in rain, Water- and Grass-type walking Pokémon will feel very happy under the Gym's showers, while Fire-, Ground-, and Rock-type Pokémon will feel unhappy.
