Cascoon (Japanese: マユルド Mayuld) is a Bug-type Pokémon.

It evolves from Wurmple depending on its personality value, starting at level 7, and it evolves into Dustox starting at level 10.

Biology

Cascoon is a cocoon-like Pokémon with a purple body, two red eyes, and spiky limbs. It has a tough cocoon that is able to endure attacks, and it will not move even when it is attacked. However, it never forgets the pain it endures. The inside of the cocoon is hot. It lives in forests. It hides motionless underneath large leaves and inside the gaps of tree branches. It camouflages itself by attaching dead leaves to its body. Even when attacked it remains motionless.

Major appearances

Jessie's Cascoon

Jessie's Wurmple evolved into Cascoon in A Corphish out of Water. However, Jessie thought it was a Silcoon. As a result, James and Meowth were worried that Jessie would be furious when Cascoon evolved into Dustox.

Generation III
Ruby Cascoon makes its protective cocoon by wrapping its body entirely with a fine silk from its mouth. Once the silk goes around its body, it hardens. This Pokémon prepares for its evolution inside the cocoon.
Sapphire If it is attacked, Cascoon remains motionless however badly it may be hurt. It does so because if it were to move, its body would be weak upon evolution. This Pokémon will also not forget the pain it endured.
Emerald To avoid detection by its enemies, it hides motionlessly beneath large leaves and in the gaps of branches. It also attaches dead leaves to its body for camouflage.
FireRed Its body, which is made of soft silk, hardens over time. When cracks appear, evolution is near.
LeafGreen
Generation IV
Diamond It is hot inside its cocoon. All the cells in its body create the energy for it to evolve.
Pearl Encased within its tough cocoon, it endures attacks. It never forgets the appearance of its foes.
Platinum It never forgets any attack it endured while in the cocoon. After evolution, it seeks payback.
HeartGold It endures attacks with patience, because the more pain before evolution, the sturdier it becomes.

Trivia

  • Cascoon shares its species name with Metapod, Kakuna, and Silcoon. They are all known as the Cocoon Pokémon.
    • They also share the same base stat total, learnset, Ability, and EV yield.
      • This ties them as the evolved Pokémon with the lowest base stat total.
  • Cascoon and Silcoon have exactly the same type, base stats, moveset, and body style, making them nearly identical.
  • Cascoon, along with Silcoon, can be seen without the limb protrusions on its body in the anime, Pokémon X and Y, and occasionally in HeartGold and SoulSilver.
    • However, James's Pokémon trivia cards showed that Silcoon and Cascoon indeed have those limbs.
  • Cascoon is the only Bug-type cocoon-based Pokémon whose Defense stat does not decrease upon evolution.
  • Cascoon is the only Pokémon found in a Friend Safari that is not its own type; it is found in the Poison-type Friend Safari even though Cascoon is pure Bug. However, it evolves into the Poison-type Dustox.

Origin

Cascoon is based on the chrysalis or cocoon stage of a butterfly or moth.

Name origin

Cascoon may be a combination of cask (a container, often cylindrical) and cocoon. It could also derive from cast, a shell meant for immobilizing part of the body or the method of creating said shell.

Mayuld is a combination of 繭 mayu (cocoon) and shield.
