Tuesday November 1, 2011: Nintendo 3DS

In the news: Nintendo 3DS

  • The Nintendo 3DS is Nintendo's latest handheld console. It is distinguished from other portable gaming devices by its use of realistic 3D in-game.
  • The 3DS was announced in March 2010 and was released worldwide in February and March 2011.
  • The first Pokémon game to be released on the 3DS will be Pokémon Rumble Blast. This game recently had its Japanese release date pushed back from July 28, 2011, to August 11. English-language versions will be available starting October 24, 2011, in North America.
  • The 3DS is backwards compatible with all other DS games. Some GBA games, as well as games from Nintendo's earlier consoles, can be bought online on the 3DS store.
  • As reported on Bulbanews, the price of the 3DS will drop worldwide starting mid-August. The new prices vary from region to region.

  • Wheel of Frontier (Japanese: バトルアリーナ! 格闘対決!! Battle Arena! Fighting Showdown!!) is the 149th episode of the Advanced Generation series, and the 423rd episode of the Pokémon anime.
  • It premiered in Japan on October 27, 2005, and in the United States on September 16, 2006.
  • This episode continues Ash's quest to earn all of the Frontier Symbols in the Battle Frontier. Here, he battles Greta and earns the Guts Symbol.
  • The Pokémon Ash uses in this battle are Grovyle' and Snorlax.
  • The episode title is based on the popular TV game show Wheel of Fortune. To that end, Ash, May, Max, and Brock all say the episode title—on the TV show, the entire audience announces the title.

  • Doom Desire is the signature move of Jirachi and was introduced in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.
  • In concept, it is similar to Future Sight, as damage is dealt to the opponent a few turns after the move is selected. Its base power is 120 in Generation III and IV, and 140 thereafter.
  • Prior to Generation V, Doom Desire did not take into account typing, meaning that it could not deal super-effective damage or receive STAB.
  • Doom Desire is able to knock out a Pokémon that used Endure and can usually hit through Protect and Detect.
  • Doom Desire is considered a "Cool" move in Pokémon Contests.

  • The Kanto region (Japanese: カントー地方 Kantō-chihō) is a large area located east of Johto, north-east of Hoenn, and south of Sinnoh. As it was the first region to be introduced, many features of the Kanto region are replicated throughout other regions.
  • All the cities in the fictional Kanto are named after colors. In the first generation games, the screen background would change color whenever the player changes cities.

  • The Ghost World is a location that has never been visited, but has been referenced in both the games and anime.
  • It has also been referred to as the spirit world and the world of spirits, but always has the Japanese name of れいかい, which can translate to any of these names.
  • The Ghost World is said to be home to both Ghost-type Pokémon and actual ghosts.
  • A portal to the Ghost World was discovered in the Summit Ruins in Ghoul Daze!; another was created by wild Litwick and Lampent in the Litwick Mansion in Scare at the Litwick Mansion!.
  • Dusknoir is most associated with the Ghost World, either mentioning it or implying it in each of its Pokédex entries.
  • The Reaper Cloth, the item that evolves Dusclops into Dusknoir, contains the Japanese name of the Ghost World in its Japanese name, translating to Ghost World Cloth.
  • The Ghost World is said to emit electrical or radio waves which command Dusknoir to take people there.

  • Midori Harada (Japanese: 原田みどり) has been an illustrator for various Pokémon materials and merchandise since 1996, including, but not limited to, Pokémon Trading Card Game illustrations, Gold & Silver Tales storybook illustrations, and illustrations of various regional maps used in Generations III and IV.
  • Harada is known for her style of calm European landscapes, called Aire Verte, which has carried into many of her works for Pokémon. One of the cards she has illustrated (Mismagius) features Paris, France as the background.
  • Harada's favorite Pokémon is Cubone.
  • Harada provided the illustrations for 363 cards.

  • Gathering the Gang of Four! (Japanese: 最初のポケモン!最後の戦い!! First Pokémon! Final Battle!!) is the 189th episode of the Advanced Generation series, and the 463rd episode of the Pokémon anime.
  • It premiered in Japan on August 24, 2006, and in the United States on February 10, 2007.
  • The episode continues Ash's quest to earn the final Frontier Symbol in the Battle Frontier. Here, he challanges Pyramid King Brandon for a rematch.
  • All three of Ash's Kanto starter Pokémon return in this episode.
  • In this reunion episode, Ash's Squirtle is revealed to have learned Rapid Spin while Charizard has learned Steel Wing.
  • Scott is revealed to own the Battle Frontier. He also explains that those who successfully defeat the Battle Frontier become Frontier Brain candidates.

  • Pokémon Rumble Blast is a Pokémon game that was released for the Nintendo 3DS and is a sequel to the WiiWare game, Pokémon Rumble.
  • This was the first retail Pokémon game to be released for the Nintendo 3DS.
  • Pokémon Rumble Blast features 646 Pokémon including forms, as well as gender differences. Keldeo, Meloetta, and Genesect are the only excluded Pokémon as they had yet to be officially released at the time of the game's release.
  • The game features the toy-like models from My Pokémon Ranch, as well as new models for Generation V Pokémon.
  • The player controls a wind-up Pokémon toy that then battles against a horde of hostile Pokémon under Cobalion's command, a style like that of a Beat 'em up game.

Back in the Day: Pokémon Mystery Dungeon

  • The Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series was launched in Japan on this day in 2005. Starting with a pair of dungeon-crawler games where the player is a Pokémon (as opposed to a Trainer), the series now comprises a range of sequels, spinoffs, and adaptations.
  • The first pair of games, Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team were released for different consoles: the former for GBA and the latter for the Nintendo DS. This remains a unique move among paired versions of Pokémon games.
  • In 2008 and 2009, sequel games were released for DS. Explorers of Time, Explorers of Darkness, and Explorers of Sky expand on gameplay concepts introduced in the originals.
  • Further sequel games were released via WiiWare in Japan in 2009. These titles have not been released internationally.
  • As with the Pokémon main series, there have been anime specials and manga based on the video games. The three PMD anime specials do not form part of the usual anime canon.

  • To Master the Onixpected! (Japanese: してんのうシバとうじょう! Siba of the Shitennō Enters!) is the 71st episode of the original series, and the 71st episode of the Pokémon anime.
  • It premiered in Japan on November 19, 1998, and in the United States on October 11, 1999.
  • The episode shows Ash continuing his training for the upcoming Indigo League. He meets up with Bruno, who is one of the Elite Four in Pokémon Red and Blue.
  • The episode's English title reflects the main Pokémon featured in the episode, Onix. Onix was also the star of Who's That Pokémon in the Japanese broadcast. In the English broadcast, the Pokémon is Alakazam, who is in the next episode.
  • In one shot, Bruno has six fingers.

  • Ryouga (Japanese: リョウガ) is the main character of the Pokémon RéBURST manga.
  • He is a kind of person who hates the words "impossible" or "no good" and will freak out and set to prove who or whatever had spoken those words wrong.
  • As a normal human, Ryouga has immense physical strength, but with the power of Burst, his strength is augmented greatly.
  • Due to the typing of Zekrom, Ryouga has the ability to use both Dragon and Template:Type2 powers.
  • Lightning Perfect Wave (Japanese: 電撃完波 Blitz Perfect Wave; read as ライトニングパーヴ Lightning Perfect Wave) is one of his known techniques.
  • Ryouga creates a sphere of electricity in his hand and fires it in the shape of beam at the opponent while performing the technique.

Spotlight on: Pokémon Trading Figure Game

  • The Pokémon Trading Figure Game is a two-player game played with collectible Pokémon Trading Figures made by Kaiyodo.
  • Only three sets are known. The first, Next Quest, is the only one ever released completely. The second set, Groundbreakers was delayed and eventually cancelled, and the Unnamed Third Set was never released.
  • It was officially discontinued on June 2, 2009. The discontinuation was mainly due to the delays, cost of the figures, and an arguable lack of support within the Pokémon Organized Play program.
  • There were 42 Pokémon figures in each of the three expansions, and 8 promotional figures.
  • The figures are made by Kaiyodo, a famous figurine and sculpture company in Japan, which is the same company that creates the "bottle cap" figures included as promotional pre-order bonuses and certain Trading Card Game merchandise.

  • Paralysis is a status condition that is not removed on switching out.
  • This status condition reduces the affected Pokémon's speed to one quarter of its usual value, as well as preventing it from attacking a quarter of the time.
  • Pokémon with the ability Quick Feet do not experience the speed drop, but an increase by half instead.
  • There are twenty-two moves which can directly cause paralysis, exactly half of them are Template:Type2.
  • Template:Type2 Pokémon are not immune to paralysis, only the Electric-type moves commonly associated with it.

  • Pokémon Ranger (Japanese: ポケモンレンジャー) is an action-adventure game for the Nintendo DS.
  • It was released on March 23, 2006 in Japan, on October 30, 2006 in North America, on December 7, 2006 in Australia and on April 13, 2007 in Europe.
  • Pokémon Ranger is currently one of only three ways to obtain a Manaphy egg, which can be transferred to Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.
  • Prior to its release, the game was often known as Pokémon Ranger: The Road to Diamond and Pearl (Japanese: ポケモンレンジャー ダイヤモンド・パールへの道).
  • The goal of the game is to travel all over the land of Fiore to capture all the 213 Pokémon that are available using the Nintendo DS touch screen and stylus.
  • Instead of capturing Pokémon in Poké Balls, players use a device called the Capture Styler to add Pokémon to their party.

  • Shaymin has the ability to sense the gratitude in people. When it is shown affection, flowers bloom all around its back.
  • Its Land Forme is based on the real-world hedgehog.
  • It made its anime debut in Giratina and the Sky Warrior as one of the two title Pokémon, being the sky warrior. It got mixed up in a dispute between Dialga and Giratina and lost its way. It then requested the assistance of Ash, Brock, and Dawn to help it reach Gracidea before the other Shaymin left it behind.
  • It, along with Darkrai, and Arceus, was officially revealed later in Generation IV than the other 104 Pokémon released.

Happy birthday Rica Matsumoto!

  • Today is Rica Matsumoto's birthday. She was born on November 30, 1968 in Yokohama, Japan.
  • Rica is a well-known seiyu, or voice actor. She is often cast as young male characters, and is perhaps best known for her role as Satoshi (Ash Ketchum) in Pokémon.
  • Other voices Rica has performed for Pokémon include Giovanni's Persian and Chansey.
  • Rica is also an accomplished vocalist. She has released five solo albums and has also recorded for the group JAM Project. She can also be heard in several Pokémon openings, including the first opening "Aim to Be a Pokémon Master" and the recent "Best Wishes!".
  • Rica has also acted in Japanese dubs of American films, including The Little Mermaid (as Flounder) and The Land Before Time (as Cera).
