Bulbanews is a primary- and secondary-source Pokémon news organization run by Bulbagarden as a means of publishing news quickly and effectively. Based on the concept of a wiki, any of its registered users may submit a news article, put in the "draft" namespace which will be subject to approval by administrators before publication in the main namespace. The site's editor-in-chief is G50, who oversees the Bulbanews Board of Editors. In addition to news reports, Bulbanews also publishes opinion pieces and regular columns related to the Pokémon series.

Like Bulbagarden's collaborative encyclopedia, Bulbapedia, Bulbanews is a combination of the name Bulbagarden, its mascot, Bulbasaur, and the word "news," illustrating its role. It utilizes images from the Bulbagarden Archives, in the same way sister wiki Bulbapedia does. Bulbanews is accompanied by BulbaNewsNOW, a microblogging feature aiming to provide fast and up to date posting on Pokémon news.

History

Bulbanews was launched in April 2005 as a comprehensive news service, about two months after Bulbapedia was opened to the public. Unfortunately, Bulbanews did not get the same attention the encyclopedia did.

The site was subsequently relaunched as your community Pokémon newspaper on February 27, 2006, the tenth anniversary of the Japanese release of Pokémon Red and Green. In addition to reporting news regarding the Pokémon canon, the new incarnation also publishes columns and editorials, as well as news from the Pokémon community.

The first Editor-in-Chief, Argy, served for four years, stepping down in 2009 to pursue a full-time career in journalism after leading Bulbanews from conception. Seasoned Bulbapedia editor and Bulbagarden moderator RexRacer took over in her stead. He began to publish a higher amount of opinions, columns, and editorials—a change that was not initially welcomed by Bulbanews readership. Columns such as the On the Origin of Species, by biologist and future Bulbanews Editor-in-Chief George Hutcheon, soon turned popular opinion in favor of the columns.

Bulbanews reverted back to a 1998-style for April Fool's Day 2011, featuring articles in the tone of what the site may have submitted were the site operational in the late twentieth century.

After serving for almost three years, RexRacer stepped down in January 2012 and handed over his reign to the former Bulbanews Managing Editor, the dark lord trombonator, better known as trom.

A spin-off of Bulbanews, BulbaNewsNOW, was launched in May 2012 as a source of fast, short updates on Pokémon happenings through Twitter.

In September 2012, the dark lord trombonator stepped down from his role as the Editor-in-Chief of Bulbanews, and then Deputy Editor George Hutcheon was chosen as the successive Editor-in-Chief.

After serving for almost two years, George Hutcheon stepped down in August 2014 from his role as the Editor-in-Chief of Bulbanews, and then Deputy Editor G50 was chosen as the successive Editor-in-Chief.

In August 2015 Bulbanews changed to a new logo similar to BulbaNewsNOWs' logo but with lighter red radio signal in the center.

Alongside the news reports, Bulbanews publishes opinion pieces and columns submitted by site contributors. Seven columns have been published during Bulbanews's existence, ranging on topics from Japanese news to Pokémon origins to mathematics. One-off opinions are occasionally featured, but generally non-news publications should be arranged with the editors before a draft is submitted.

Articles for Bulbagarden projects Bulbacast (a podcast) and the National Bulbagraphic (an e-zine) are stored on Bulbanews.
