Brassius (Japanese: コルサ Colza) is an artist who is the Gym Leader of Artazon's Gym, known officially as the Artazon Gym. He specializes in Grass-type Pokémon. He hands out the Grass Badge to Trainers who defeat him.

In the core series games

Brassius is one of the Gym Leaders of the Paldea region, and is also an artist. He treats battles as an artform and tests the aesthetic sensibilities of those who challenge his Gym. He is always busy with a new project when he's not battling, inspired by his surroundings.

In addition to the Gym Badge, Brassius gives out TM020 (Trailblaze) after defeating him.

He is close friends with Hassel, the art teacher at the academy in Mesagoza. Hassel helped inspire Brassius's most remarkable artwork called "Surrendering Sunflora", a statue installation spread around the town of Artazon depicting Sunflora with somber expressions. Amongst art connoisseurs, the meaning of "Surrendering Sunflora" is debated.[1] In truth, at the time of the creation of "Surrendering Sunflora", Brassius was deathly ill, and he had given up all hope, even prepared to give up being an artist if "Surrendering Sunflora" didn't gain proper recognition. Despite feeling his worst, Hassel was there to encourage him, which gave Brassius the strength to start the project in the first place. Whether this event took place while he was a Gym Leader is unknown.

Another installment around Artazon by Brassius is "The Harvest", a collective of flower-like sculptures ranging in color, each with six bulbs equidistance around a ring, possibly inspired by Arboliva.

In The Indigo Disk, Brassius can be invited to act as a special coach at Blueberry Academy.

Pokémon Horizons: The Series

Brassius was first mentioned in Welcome to Paldea!, with Alex mentioning that he has seen a rare Pokémon, which Liko theorized could've been the Black Rayquaza.

Brassius debuted in Nemona and Brassius and…, where he was revealed to suffer from artist's block and no longer could see any quality in any of his works. Liko, Roy and Nemona stopped by his house for information. Brassius immediately took a liking to Liko upon hearing that she is Alex's daughter, inviting her and her friends to his home. Upon being enraged by Roy's question about Rayquaza, he ended the conversation. Later on, after seeing Liko, Roy, and Nemona's motivation to cheer him up by gathering together dozens of Sunflora, Brassius decided to show them his Rayquaza sculpture, explaining that his encounter with Rayquaza had caused his slump. Seeing Roy's animation, Brassius decided to challenge Roy to a battle. With renewed spirit, Brassius managed to win the battle. Before the group left, Brassius decided to show them one more sculpture, this time of a giant Arboliva that he saw in the forest where Rayquaza appeared.

Brassius and Roy

In Someone We Can't See! Whosawhatsit?, while the Rising Volt Tacklers were searching for Liko, Brassius was mentioned by Roy as one of the people he visited to find out where she might have gone.

Brassius appeared in a flashback to Liko and Roy's journey in From So Far Away.

In HZ046, Brassius was selected as Roy's challenge as part of Terastal Training. Liko, Roy, and Dot arrived in Artazon in HZ048 in order for Roy to challenge him, but Brassius was busy finishing an sculpture to be featured in the Artazon Art Festival. After seeing Roy's way of battling and his reaction after losing to Nemona, however, he put the test on indefinite hold, declaring Roy can never master Terastallization until he finds out what he's missing. Roy followed his advice and, working with his Fuecoco, made a sculpture for the festival that showed to Brassius that he had figured it out. Then, they proceeded to the battle court, where the test was held, and Roy managed to win after Terastallizing Fuecoco.

In HZ055, Brassius attended the Naranja Academy as was partnered with Roy as part of the Elite Four Tag Battle. They battled Hassel, using Fuecoco and Dolliv against Baxcalibur and Flapple, only to eventually lose the match.

In HZ067, Brassius and Hassel watched Roy's battle against Liko, Brassius praised Roy for his improved battling skills and was pleased when he won the match.

Character

Brassius is a passionate artist who uses Pokémon as his inspiration for his artwork. He uses the word "avant-garde" when something intrigues or upsets him. As a Gym Leader, he uses battling as a way to teach Trainers and improve their battling skills.

Dolliv is Brassius's first known Pokémon. It is often seen with him and has a habit of spraying out olive oil when surprised or happy. It reappeared in HZ048.

In HZ055, Brassius used Dolliv in his match against Hassel, where it teamed up with Roy's Fuecoco to battle Baxcalibur and Flapple, only to be defeated.

During the Elite Four Tag Battle, Dolliv proved to be an extremely powerful and versatile Pokémon in battle, serving as support for Fuecoco while battling on equal terms even with the type disadvantage against fully evolved Pokémon.

Dolliv's known moves are Seed Bomb, Helping Hand, Grass Knot, and Energy Ball.

Sudowoodo is Brassius's second known Pokémon. It is capable of Terastallizing into a Grass type. Brassius used it in his battle against Roy and his Fuecoco. Despite Fuecoco learning Stomping Tantrum during the battle, Sudowoodo was still able to defeat it after Terastallizing.

In HZ048, Sudowoodo was used to battle Roy and his Fuecoco a second time for his Terastal Training test, only to be defeated.

Sudowoodo's known moves are Rock Throw, Substitute, Taunt, Trailblaze, and Stone Edge.

Pokémon Adventures

Brassius debuted in PASV08. He was first seen in Artazon, where he approached Scarlet after noting she had been staring at the "Surrendering Sunflora" for some time. Despite knowing nothing about art, Scarlet gave her own interpretation on what the "Surrendering Sunflora" was supposed to convey. Moved to tears, Brassius praised Scarlet's critique as correct, becoming even more impressed upon learning that she had been able to do it despite not attending any of Hassel's art classes. When Nemona arrived and called Scarlet by name, Brassius recognized her as the one had heard from Katy and agreed to tell her about the treasures of ruin if she, in turn, would collaborate with him. He saw Scarlet's usage of the Gym Challenge as a tool for collecting information for her profession as a treasure hunter as similar to his own past, when he had created art only to earn money and recognition.

After Scarlet had passed the Gym Test, Brassius agreed to battle her. The battle, which ended in Brassius's defeat, left the Gym Leader inspired for a new art piece, though he agreed to tell her about the treasures of ruin as promised. Although he had little information to provide, Brassius did inform Scarlet that the treasures of ruin referred to a group of Pokémon. As Scarlet left, Brassius suggested she go meet with Hassel at the academy, as he was the one who gave him the information to begin with.

Pokémon

Petilil
Brassius's Petilil
Debut PASV09

Petilil is Brassius's first known Pokémon. She was first used to battle Scarlet's Tarountula, but her attempt to put it to sleep was foiled by Tarountula's Insomnia. She was then taken out by a single Bug Bite.

Petilil's only known move is Sleep Powder.

Smoliv
Brassius's Smoliv
Debut PASV09

Smoliv is Brassius's second known Pokémon. It was used to battle Scarlet's Tarountula. Despite using a Sunny Day-Weather Ball combination to deal super effective damage to Tarountula, it wasn't enough to defeat the String Ball Pokémon, who retaliated and defeated Smoliv.

Smoliv's known moves are Sunny Day and Weather Ball.

Sudowoodo Grass Tera Type
Brassius's Sudowoodo
Brassius's Terastallized Sudowoodo
Debut PASV09

Sudowoodo is Brassius's third known Pokémon. It is capable of Terastallizing into a Grass type. Scarlet sent out her Palafin to face it, but withdrew it immediately after Sudowoodo had Terastallized and sent out Armarouge instead, which proceeded to strike Sudowoodo with a super effective Lava Plume. Sudowoodo survived the attack due to its Ability, but fell afterward due to the burn it received.

None of Sudowoodo's moves are known and its Ability is Sturdy.

Main article: Brassius (Obsidian Flames 187)

Brassius was introduced as a Supporter card in the Pokémon Trading Card Game during the English Scarlet & Violet Series (the Japanese Scarlet & Violet Era). It was first released as a Japanese SV-P Promotional card before releasing in the English Obsidian Flames expansion, with artwork by GIDORA. It allows players to shuffle their hand into the deck and draw cards equal to the number of cards that were in their hand, plus one.

Trivia

  • Brassius's Japanese Gym Leader title is ネイチャーアーティスト.
  • His Sudowoodo's Grass Tera Type alludes to Sudowoodo's mimicry of actual trees. This is referenced by Brassius himself after Terastallizing the Pokémon, calling it "Truleewoodo" (Japanese: ウソから()(まこと) Truth Born From a Lie). In the English dub of Nemona and Brassius and…, this is retranslated more closely as "From Fiction Comes Truth".
  • Of the eight Gym Leaders of Paldea, Brassius is the only one not to be seen holding a Poké Ball prior to calling out his first Pokémon.
  • After he recalls his Pokémon from battle, he touches the Poké Ball to his forehead rather than simply nodding at it like many other Trainers.
