Brad Van Darn and Smoochum

Brad Van Darn (Japanese: ブラッド・キタオ Brad Kitao) is a character of the day who appeared in The Screen Actor's Guilt.

Brad is an action movie star with many female fans. He is known for starring in a movie called "Ultra Maximum". Ash and his friends first met the star when he approached them in disguise and handed them a bundled-up blanket. He asked them to watch it for him and then left. Inside the blanket was a Smoochum. Later on, he went to search for Ash and his friends to get his Smoochum back, but couldn't find them anywhere due to them having an interference with Team Rocket. His manager, Vitzo, soon found Brad and ordered him to go back to the set with him.

After dealing with Team Rocket and learning of the identity of the mysterious man who gave them Smoochum, Ash and the gang learned where Brad was and went there to give Smoochum back to him. However, they were confronted by his manager, who told them that Brad didn't want Smoochum anymore. When they were about to leave, Brad heard Smoochum's voice and came running. He was overjoyed to have her back. Vitzo suggested to him that he should get rid of Smoochum because he feared that his reputation would be ruined, for such an actor with manly roles should not have a cute Pokémon. He wanted Brad to have a tough Pokémon, such as Charizard or Houndoom. However, Brad explained that he could never abandon Smoochum, because it was because of her that he was able to get as far as he did in stardom.

Completely unfazed by Brad's story, Vitzo was still intent on getting rid of Smoochum. He ordered two security guards—which happened to be Team Rocket in disguise—to get rid of the kids and Smoochum. Team Rocket decided to put their own plans into play and attempted to steal Smoochum.

Seeing that Smoochum was in danger, Brad jumped into action, on stage and in front of an audience full of Brad's fans, and fought to save Smoochum from Team Rocket, without the aid of any Pokémon. Thinking that it was a show, Brad's fans cheered him on. He eventually managed to get Smoochum out of the clutches of Team Rocket. Afterwards, Brad told his fans that Smoochum is his real-life Pokémon. Vitzo believed that his career was over, however, Brad's fans also loved Smoochum and she would later star in Brad's movies, as well.

Brad Van Darn's Smoochum
Smoochum
Smoochum is Brad Van Darn's only known Pokémon. He has given her pet names such as "Smoochy," "Smoochy-oochy," and "Smoochy-kins". She first appeared when Brad was crowded by a bunch of girls. Ash and his friends went to see what was up and Brad handed them Smoochum in a yellow towel. Suddenly, the group of girls reappeared and Smoochum ran off with Togepi and Pikachu. Then, Team Rocket appeared and captured Smoochum and Togepi. Ash and his friends arrived, however, and sent Team Rocket blasting off.

Ash and his friends then tried to find Brad and followed his limo to an arena. Inside, Brad was worried about where his Smoochum was. The gang managed to get into the arena and gave Smoochum back to Brad. Meanwhile, Team Rocket disguised themselves as bodyguards and escorted Ash and his friends—including Smoochum—out of the building. Team Rocket then captured Smoochum. Team Rocket were backstage in the arena with Smoochum when the curtains of the stage opened to reveal the trio trying to capture Smoochum. Brad saw Smoochum and tried to retrieve her when Team Rocket sent out their Pokémon. Ash and his friends arrived and sent Team Rocket blasting off again. In the end, Brad starred in a film with his Smoochum.

Smoochum's only known move is Sweet Kiss.

Trivia

  • Brad's name is a pun on real-life actor Jean-Claude Van Damme. "Darn" could have been chosen for his last name because "darn" often replaces "damn" when shows or movies are edited. Meanwhile, his Japanese name, Brad Kitao, is a reference to Brad Pitt.
