Trivia

  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Bisharp and its pre-evolution.
    • The types it has are also the two types that were introduced in Generation II.
    • This makes Bisharp and its pre-evolution the only Pokémon to have a double resistance to Ghost.
  • Pawniard and Bisharp cannot learn any special moves by leveling up or breeding.
  • Bisharp shares several similarities with Gallade. Both have warrior-esque designs that prominently feature crested helmets and bladed arms, and they share a height of 5'03".
  • Pawniard and Bisharp are the only Pokémon that can have Defiant as a non-Hidden Ability.

Origin

It looks similar to a knight and may be based on Arthurian legends of black knights. It may also have gained origin from the Kaijin style of Japanese monster movies, involving a humanoid creature that acts as a villain. There is also a resemblance to the Super Sentai (and by extension, Power Rangers) and Kamen Rider series' suited heroes. It also bears similarities to the Ultra Crusaders of the Ultra Series.

Name origin

Bisharp is a combination of bishop, keeping with the chess theme in its evolutionary line, and sharp, describing its metal blades. Fittingly enough, if a pawn reaches the end of the opponent's side of the board, the player can choose to "promote" it to either a rook, knight, bishop, or queen, similar to how Pawniard evolves into Bisharp. Furthermore, it may also derive from bisect, which means "to cut or split into two", referencing the lethality of Bisharp's cutting abilities.

Kirikizan is probably derived from 切り刻む kirikizamu, to mince, and 斬 zan, to cut or slay.
