Rowlet was born into a flock of Pikipek, led by a Toucannon and Trumbeak. In its debut episode, it joined its flock to gather fruit from a town on Melemele Island, where townspeople would routinely share nature's bounty with wild Pokémon that passed by. Rowlet mistook a wind chime for food, and brought its bounty to its nest, only to be scolded by Trumbeak that evening and being sent back to gather more.

The next day, a tired Rowlet noticed a sweet smell being produced by Mallow's Bounsweet, who was with its trainer, Ash, and Pikachu. Believing it to be fruit, Rowlet attacked Bounsweet, only to be deflected. After a series of failed attempts, Rowlet became exhausted and fell out of the sky. Ash caught it before it hit the ground. When Rowlet came to, it found that Ash and the others had prepared fruit for it to eat, and began to gobble it down. As Pikachu and Rotom marveled at its eating speed, Ash offered it a banana. Rowlet jumped on Ash's arm and began eating, leading Ash to comment on the strength of Rowlet's legs. After Rowlet was finished eating, Ash tried to ask Rowlet if it wanted to join his party, but Rowlet, seeing a nearby watermelon, took the large fruit and returned to its nest, prompting Ash, Mallow, and their Pokémon to follow it.

Rowlet returned to its nest, relieving the elder Toucannon and earning it praise from Trumbeak. Ash and company soon found Rowlet's nest, but their reunion was cut short by Team Rocket, who came to the nest to take back the berries the flock had taken back from Bewear. Trapping the flock in nets, Team Rocket set their sights on Pikachu, and Jessie sent out Mimikyu to battle him. While Pikachu battled, Ash let Rowlet free its flock. While Pikachu was able to hold off Mimikyu while Rowlet freed the Pikipek, Mimikyu had it cornered. Rowlet used Leafage to block Mimikyu and save Pikachu, bringing him back to Ash's side. Rowlet was then able to free Trumbeak and Toucannon. Before the battle could go on any longer, Bewear came back to Team Rocket and carried the confused trio back to its den.

The day had been won, and Rowlet was praised by the members of its nest. Ash thanked Rowlet for saving the day before saying goodbye, to everyone's surprise. Not wanting to separate it from its family in its nest, Ash began walking away. However, seeing how it wanted to join Ash, Toucannon gave Rowlet its permission to leave the nest. Rowlet dove into Ash's backpack and wove goodbye to its family. Delighted, Ash threw a Poké Ball at Rowlet and caught it, officially adding it to his team.

Personality and characteristics

Ash and Rowlet

Rowlet is a fairly young Pokémon, having recently hatched from its Egg. As such, it is somewhat naive and inexperienced. In its debut episode, Rowlet brought a wind chime from a market on Melemele Island to its nest, thinking it was food. It also attempted to take Mallow's Bounsweet to its nest multiple times, despite being attacked by her each time it tried. In the same episode, Rowlet dozed off while being lectured by its caretaker, Trumbeak.

Ash and Rowlet quickly bonded after meeting each other. Rowlet likes roosting in his backpack.
