Applin appears to be based on a worm, and may be based on the concept of a worm burrowing inside of an apple. Considering its Dragon typing, it may be a pun on {{wp|wyrm}}. It may also be based on the Worm on Linton of British myth, a green serpentine dragon that lives inside a hill.
Applin appears to be based on the {{wp|larva}}e of {{wp|codling moth}}s, which burrow into {{wp|apple}}s and feed on its core, inhibiting growth and ripening them earlier. Its evolution methods may be a reference on how the host plant deters its herbivory. Considering its Dragon typing, it may also be based on {{wp|Ladon (mythology)|Ladon}}, a dragon from {{wp|Greek mythology}} that guards the {{wp|golden apple}}s in the {{wp|Garden of the Hesperides}}. Applin (Japanese: カジッチュ Kajicchu) is a dual-type Grass/Dragon Pokémon introduced in Generation VIII.

It evolves into Flapple when exposed to a Tart Apple or Appletun when exposed to a Sweet Apple.

Biology

Applin is a small, worm-like Pokémon with a light green body and a dark green underside. Its head is round with two pink nostrils. Above its head are two large leaf-like eyestalks which house its two small black eyes. These eyestalks give the apple it lives in the appearance of having a stem with leaves. It also has two thin hairs on the tip of its tail.

Applin is both the lightest and shortest Dragon-type Pokémon, and also one of the shortest Grass-type Pokémon. As soon as it's born, it burrows into an apple, which serves as a home, food source, and protection against preying bird Pokémon. The flavor of the apple determines which evolution Applin will evolve into.

Sour wild fruits usually have thicker epidermis and core than the sweeter domesticated varieties, thus Flapple keeping the apple skin and being smaller while Appletun grows bigger and internalizes the whole fruit.

Applin may be a combination of apple and inside or tannin, a biblical serpentine dragon.

Kajicchu may be a combination of 齧る kajiru (to gnaw), 果実 kajitsu (fruit), and 虫 chū (bug; worm).
