Starting Out

Turn on the Game Boy, and let's get started! Press A or START at the title screen to access the main menu. You will see two options, New Game and Option. Selecting Option will show three topics. You don't need to change them, but it's a good idea to set the Text Speed to Fast. Select New Game and press A. All of a sudden, Professor Oak appears! He welcomes you and gives you a brief insight into the world of Pokémon.

Name Entry screen

First thing's first: you need to set your name!

  • (New Name)
  • YELLOW
  • ASH
  • JACK

If you don't want any of the default names, select New Name and press A. On this screen, just move the cursor around to highlight the letter you want, and press A to select it (up to seven characters). To remove the last letter entered, press B. Once you're done entering your name, select ED in the bottom-right corner.

Now you need to choose a name for your rival, Oak's grandson.

  • (New Name)
  • BLUE
  • GARY
  • JOHN

Like with your own name, you have the option of giving your rival any name that you wish. When you are finished, you'll wake up in your bedroom.

Your House

You start the game in your bedroom, standing in front of your SNES. Now, a quick recap on the controls:

  • D-Pad (Arrows) - These four buttons will move your character around, and also move the cursor around when in a menu.
  • A Button - This is the game's all-purpose "do" button. It lets you talk to people, push buttons, inspect something, etc.
  • B Button - Cancels selections and lets you exit menus.
  • START - The Start button will open the in-game menu.

Before you leave, check your PC in the corner for any useful items. Stand in front of it and press A.
Your PC is your item-storage system. You can only hold 20 different items in your backpack, so you may have to store some in your PC at some point to make room. The system is pretty simple:

  • To store an item, choose Deposit Item and select the desired item.
  • To retrieve an item, choose Withdraw Item and then select the item to take with you.
  • To get rid of an item permanently, use Toss Item and select the item to remove. Your PC can store up to 50 items.

Your PC already holds an item, a Potion. Highlight Withdraw Item and select Potion x1. You'll be asked how many to withdraw, but since there's only one, you can just press A. Hit the B button a few times to back out of the menus, and you'll be back in your bedroom.
It is probably a good idea to save your game now, so with nothing selected, press START. Most of the subjects here are self-explanatory. Select Save, the game will ask you if you are sure you want to save, select Yes. Once it is done saving and the menu has disappeared, the game is saved. You could then turn off the Game Boy and pick up from this point later on.

Enough of this, let's go downstairs. Walk on top of the stairs in the top right corner of the room, and you'll wind up on the first floor.
Downstairs, you'll see your Mom sitting at the table. Talk to her, and she'll say that Professor Oak has been looking for you.

To leave your house, step on the mat along the south wall, and press the down arrow. Welcome to Pallet Town!

Pallet Town

Pallet Town

Pallet Town is a rather boring, quaint town, with only three houses. The house to the west is yours, the one to the east is your rival's house, and the big building to the south is Professor Oak's lab. You can walk all around town and talk to everyone, but Oak is nowhere to be found. Looks like there's nothing else to do but leave town, so walk into the tall grass north of the town...

From out of nowhere, Oak appears! He yells at you for trying to leave by yourself, without a Pokémon of your own for defense against the wild Pokémon roaming around. He has perfect timing, because a wild Pikachu jumps out of the grass at that very moment. Oak throws a single Poké Ball and catches the electric mouse. He drags you back to the lab, and offers you the Pokémon sitting in the Poké Ball on his table, but your rival snatches it away from you. Instead, Oak gives you the freshly-caught Pikachu. This Pokémon will remain a Pikachu, as it cannot evolve in Pokémon Yellow. On your way out, your rival challenges you to your first battle.

After the battle, your rival will run off, and your new Pikachu jumps out of its Poké Ball. Oak says that you should just let it follow behind you to make it happy. Pikachu had been fully healed after the battle, so you are all set to leave your hometown.

Walk north to Route 1.

Route 1

Route 1

This Route is pretty straightforward. You don't have any Poké Balls yet, so you won't be able to catch any new Pokémon. All you can do for now is to battle a few wild Pidgey and Rattata to earn Pikachu some experience.

Talk to this mart employee
for a Potion.

Talk to the first person you see - the guy works at a Poké Mart, and he'll give you a free Potion as a sample.
This isn't a difficult route, so just follow the path and you'll soon see the Poké Center in Viridian City.
