There are no less than eight Trainers on this route.  You've been warned!  It's worth it though, you'll be a stronger (and richer) Trainer because of it.

Now that you've made it past those Trainers, you can finally try to catch some new Pokémon!  Along with Pidgey, Spearow and Jigglypuff can also be found here.  The next point of interest is the Poké Center.  There's a shady guy inside near the PC that will you a Magikarp for pdollar500!  The fish itself isn't a great Water choice, since it can only splash around until Lv 15, but with enough training it will evolve to Gyarados at Lv 20 (with way better stats and moves).  It's up to you if you want to fork over the money for the fish here, since they are found almost everywhere with the Old Rod.  Heal up your team and head into Mt. Moon.

The Magikarp Salesman
A Pokémon Center stands near the entrance to Mt. Moon. Inside is a shady man that will offer to sell you a Magikarp for pdollar500. The fish can do nothing but Splash until level 15, but evolves into the powerful Gyarados at level 20. If you have the money to spare, you can have a strong Water Pokémon much sooner, but you can soon hook one for free with the right fishing rod.

Mt. Moon isn't a very tough cave to get through, especially if your team is around Lv 15 by now.  Since this is the first cave you'll explore, there are some new Pokémon to find.  Zubat, Paras, Geodude, and Clefairy would all be welcome additions to your Pokédex.

When you first enter the cave, make a left and grab the 12 and Potion, and defeat the nearby trainer on the way. Follow the tunnel around and take the first stairs you see.

Look out for the Team Rocket grunt here, that means that the criminal gang is up to no good somewhere nearby. Grab the Vitamin from the ledge and take the stairs back to the first floor.
Mt. Moon is a large cave set deep inside the mountains. There are many Trainers inside who are looking to battle. Many cave-dwelling Pokémon, like Zubat and Paras, can also be found here.

Head down for two more Trainer battles, as well as a Potion, Rare Candy, and Escape Rope. These are all handy items right now, since the Escape Rope will warp you back to the entrance if you need to heal up; the Rare Candy can raise a Pokémon's level by 1. Head up and follow the tunnel around to the left, and take the next set of stairs you see.

You've got two more Rocket grunts between you and the exit, you're almost there! Be careful about the next Rocket you find, since his Raticate's Hyper Fang can be a problem.  Follow the winding path to the next Rocket grunt, who mutters about the team stealing fossils for profit.  Only one trainer left, a Super Nerd that claims both nearby fossils as his own.  After beating him, he compromises, saying you'll each take one of the fossils.  Like the Old Amber in Pewter City, if you take the fossil to Cinnabar Island, the scientists there can revive a prehistoric Pokémon!  The Dome Fossil will become a Kabuto, while the Helix Fossil will become an Omanyte.  You can't go wrong with either one; both become Rock/Water-types.  Since you can only get one, you'll have to trade if you want the second.  Choose your fossil, head left, and take the stairs outta here!

After the trek through Mt. Moon, 4 will seem like a walk in the park. There are no Trainers here, and only a small patch of grass to the south. You can find new Pokémon in the grass; Ekans (Red) or Sandshrew (Blue).  Pick up 04 from the north side of the route, then head south and jump the ledge into the tall grass (once you do, you can't backtrack through Mt. Moon).  If you need to train before battling Misty, this is the best place to do it.  Once your team is around Lv 20-25, then you should be in good shape.
4 is a one-way path that leads down from the mountains. Pick up 04 and the hidden Great before jumping the ledge outside Cerulean City.

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon Red and Blue.
These pages follow the original Game Boy iteration, not FireRed and LeafGreen. The guide for those games can be found here.

Route 3

Route 3

Route 3 runs off to the east, ending at the entrance to Mt. Moon. There are more than a few Trainers to fight along the way, so it may be necessary to rest up in Pewter City before venturing into the cave.

Route 4

The Magikarp Salesman

A Pokémon Center stands near the entrance to Mt. Moon. Inside is a shady man that will offer to sell you a Magikarp for $500. The fish can do nothing but Splash until level 15, but evolves into the powerful Gyarados at level 20. If you have the money to spare, you can have a strong Water-type Pokémon much sooner, but you can soon hook one for free with the right fishing rod.

Mt. Moon

Mt Moon, 1F
Mt Moon, B1F
Mt Moon, B2F

Mt. Moon is a large cave set deep inside the mountains. There are many Trainers inside who are looking to battle. Many cave-dwelling Pokémon, like Zubat and Paras, can also be found here.

1F

Collect TM12 (Water Gun) and the Potion to the west, then follow the tunnel around and climb down the nearest ladder.

B2F (south)

The presence of a Team Rocket grunt here means that the criminal gang is up to no good here. Grab the HP Up from the ledge and take the ladder back to the first floor.

1F

To the south are two more Trainers. There are also three items lying around, including a Potion, Rare Candy, and an Escape Rope. A Rare Candy raises a Pokémon's level by one, and an Escape Rope warps you to the cave entrance if you need to heal up. Go north and climb down the next ladder.

B2F (northeast)

Beat up the second Rocket grunt, then pick up TM01 (Mega Punch) on the platform. Check the boulder for a hidden Ether and return to the main floor.

1F

Continue along the tunnel to the northwest corner of the cave. Grab the Moon Stone in the corner and take the ladder to the basement.

B2F (outer area)

Follow the winding tunnel to the northwest, where a Super Nerd claims both fossils lying here as his own. Defeat him, and he lets you take your pick of the two. Like with the Old Amber, the scientists on Cinnabar Island can resurrect a prehistoric Pokémon from each fossil. The Helix Fossil will become an Omanyte, while the Dome Fossil will become a Kabuto. Both are Rock/Water Pokémon, and will be at Level 30. Climb the final ladder to reach the exit.

Route 4

Route 4

Route 4 is a one-way path that leads down from the mountains. Pick up TM04 (Whirlwind) and the hidden Great Ball before jumping the ledge outside Cerulean City.
