Wake leads the fight with Gyarados, who has Intimidate, so lead with Special-based attackers. It, like most of Wake's team, has his signature move, Brine. Brine does more damage if you have less than half of your HP left, so be wary and stay healthy. Waterfall will do the most damage, and it also has Bite and Twister, both having a chance of making you flinch. Electric type attacks will quickly send it out for the count. Next up is Wake's Quagsire, which is his counter to Electric-types. Instead, Grass-type attacks are this Pokemon's nightmare. It has Rock Tomb to slow you down, as well as Water Pulse and Mud Shot as far as offense goes, and it does not have Brine. Yawn can be annoying, because the next turn after it uses it you will fall asleep, unless you switch. Chesto Berries can be useful in this situation. Last up is his star Pokemon, Floatzel. Floatzel is very fast, and can hit pretty hard, but its defenses are rather lousy. It has Ice Fang to counter Grass-types, as well as Aqua Jet, a Water-type Quick Attack. It too, is packing Brine, so stay healthy during the fight. Crunch is a strong Dark-type move that complements Floatzel's high Attack stat, so be wary. However, since it has rather lame Defense and especially Sp. Defense, one good Electric or Grass-type attack will send it out.

Pastoria City

Pastoria City

Pastoria City is the wonderland for rare pokémon lovers. This walkthrough will fully explore Pastoria for you.

Things you can do

  • Enter the first house you see in Pastoria. Talk to the woman in Ace Trainer clothes and she will examine your Pokémon. If you have fed it lots of Poffins, she will give you a Silk Scarf.
  • Talk to the girl in front of the Great Marsh, and she will give you a Mask that depends on your Rival's starter Pokémon.
  • Go to the Gym, turn east, and go south. The house on the left has a boy who will give you a Macho Brace if you show him a Combee. The right one has a Move Relearner.
  • Go to the Poké Mart and restock your Items.
  • Head west to the house there. The woman inside will give you free Berries.
  • Now go to the Great Marsh.

Great Marsh

The Great Marsh

If you want to catch a lot of rare Pokémon, you should visit the Great Marsh at the north end of town. For $500 you can catch up to 30 Pokémon or walk 500 steps, whichever comes first. One way to end the visit early is to select "Retire" in the pause menu. With the choice of mud or bait, it's up to you to choose which one you do! Bait lowers the chance of the Pokémon escaping, but also significantly lowers its catch rate. The mud does just the opposite, making the Pokémon easier to catch, but raising its chances of fleeing. It is important to master this unorthodox catching method, because some of the Pokémon found in the Marsh will be helpful for subsequent gym battles.

Pastoria Gym

Before you enter the Gym, you will be challenged to a battle with your rival.

Pastoria Gym

The puzzle of the Pastoria Gym is raising and lowering the water level with the buttons in the correct order. To rech Wake, go down the stairs, turn left and go up the stairs. You will reach a Yellow button. Hit it and the water level drops. Turn right, down the stairs, and go through a narrow passage. There is a another narrow passage before you reach some stairs. Climb up to the top, and hit the green button. Climb down and follow the path to another set of stairs. battle the Trainer there, and hit the blue button. Folllow the platform to the first yellow button and head right past the stairs to the Trainer. Battle him, and follow the path to another Trainer. Battle her, and go on forward. You will eventually find a green button. Hit it, go down the nearby stairs, and hit the yellow button. Go up, then down to the lowest level. The rest is simple; follow the path to a set of stairs, climb up, and hit the blue button. The path to Wake is clear.

Valor Lakefront

After earning the Fen Badge, you will have to chase after a Galactic Grunt (who is fleeing from the Great Marsh, after detonating a bomb there) from Pastoria, through Route 213 (you'll encounter Looker on the way), all the way to the Valor Lakefront where you will battle him near the entrance to the Lake Valor area.

After defeating the Grunt, you will meet Cynthia again. She is worried about the group of Psyduck on Route 210. She give you SecretPotion to cure the Psyduck of their headaches. She will then tell you the legend about a mirage Pokémon that lives inside the lake. You can now head to Route 210, north of Solaceon Town, and explore the northern part that was blocked off by the Psyduck. Or you can go back to Pastoria and explore Route 212 to the west if you haven't already.
