Welcome to {{ci|Goldenrod}}, the largest metropolis in Johto and sister city to {{ci|Saffron}} in Kanto. This sprawling city boasts several major attractions, including a Pokémon Gym, Bike Shop, Game Corner, Radio Tower, and Department Store. There is so much to do in the big city that it is easy to forget about a single shady character. But with a Rocket Grunt keeping tabs on the Radio Tower, expect to save the city sooner or later. Welcome to {{ci|Goldenrod}}, a sprawling metropolis and Johto's economic capital.  Sister city to Saffron in Kanto, Goldenrod boasts a wide variety of local attractions, including a Pokémon Gym, Bike Shop, Game Corner, Radio Tower, and Department Store.  With so much going on, it's easy to get distracted and overlook any shady events.  But with a Team Rocket grunt keeping tabs on the Radio Tower, expect to return here to save the city from the Rockets' underhanded schemes.

The [[Miracle Cycle|Bike Shop]] has relocated to the city's southeast neighborhood from [[Cerulean City]] in Kanto, but business doesn't seem to be doing very well.  The owner has an idea: since you're traveling so much, he'll loan you a {{DL|List of key items in Generation IV|bicycle}}, the advertising will increase interest, and business will pick up.  Riding the bike is faster than traveling on foot (even with the {{DL|List of key items in Generation IV|Running Shoes}}), and he gains new customers - everybody's happy!  The only downside is that your partner Pokémon can't keep up with you on the bike, and will automatically return to its Poké Ball when you climb onto it.

At [[Goldenrod Game Corner]], you can win coins by playing the new [[Voltorb Flip]] game.  Speak to Mr Game behind the table to receive the {{DL|List of key items in Generation IV|Coin Case}}.  The Voltorb Flip game is exclusive to non-Japanese versions of {{game|HeartGold and SoulSilver|s}}, replacing the slot machines present in the original versions.  The game features a five-by-five grid of tiles, underneath of which are hidden numbers (which multiply the player's score when flipped) and Voltorb (which Selfdestruct and cause the player to lose all points).  You can easily figure out where the Voltorb are located by using the clues provided: the number of Voltorb in each row and column are noted at the side of the screen.  If you can find all of the 2x and 3x multipliers, the game will advance to harder levels.  Winning at this game, as all others, will earn the player Coins, which can be traded for prizes.

[[Bill]], the inventor of the Pokémon PC Storage system, lives on the city's western coast with his mother and sister.  He is currently away on business in [[Ecruteak City]], but his sister will give you his phone number. This is a useful way to check how many Pokémon that you have stored in the current box. After meeting him in Ecruteak, he returns home to Goldenrod. Stop by his house afterwards and he will give you a {{p|Eevee|rare Pokémon}}.

The north end of the tunnel houses two new venues, the Dress-Up Shop and the Memorial Photo Studio. The Dress-Up Shop lets Trainers dress up their Pokémon with [[accessories]] before taking their photo; the Photo Studio lets a Trainer dress up in a Team Rocket uniform before taking a picture of them and their Pokémon.

The [[Global Terminal]] is located west of the Radio Tower. Inside, Trainers can interact with others from around the world. Trainers can trade, share pictures of their dressed-up Pokémon and PC Boxes, and share Battle Videos taken with the {{key|IV|Vs. Recorder}}.


The [[Global Terminal]] is the worldwide network over which players can interact in different ways via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. In order to access the terminal, players must have the the first badge of Johto.  The Global Trade Station lets a player send and receive Pokémon on the worldwide network. If the player talks with the woman at the counter, she will direct them into a room in which they can either put up a Pokémon to be traded or trade a Pokémon they own for one that has been put up for trade.

The [[Goldenrod Radio Tower|Radio Tower]] stands tall directly aside of the [[Magnet Train|train station]]. Every day, the Pokémon Lottery Corner on 1F draws a lucky number. If this number matches the [[OT number]] of any of your Pokémon, then you win a prize! The grand prize is a {{ball|Master}}, while other prizes include a {{DL|Revive|Max Revive}}, [[Exp. Share]], {{DL|Vitamin|PP Up}}, and {{ball|Ultra}}.

The [[Goldenrod Gym]] is devoted to {{type2|Normal}}. Trainers would do well to bring {{type2|Fighting}}s along, since they are the only type to get a power bonus when battling Normal-types.  Unless you've traded for the guy's {{p|Machop}} in the Dept Store, this could be a rough battle. The Gym's layout is much the same as it was in Gold & Silver, but challengers must now navigate over and around the raises platforms in order to reach [[Whitney]].
The [[Goldenrod Gym]] specializes in {{type|Normal}} Pokémon. Only {{type|Fighting}} Pokémon have an advantage here, so trading for that {{p|Machop}} in the Department Store can make things much easier. The Gym is designed like a {{p|Clefairy}}, and challengers must navigate around the raised platform to reach the Gym Leader.
 
[[Whitney]]'s {{p|Clefairy}} does not post much of a challenge, but her {{p|Miltank}} is a troublemaker. {{type|Ghost}} Pokémon are typically unaffected by Normal moves, but {{p|Miltank}}'s {{a|Scrappy}} ability nullifies this immunity. Its {{m|Attract}} causes {{DL|Status ailment|infatuation}}, which restricts opposite-gender foes to attacking only 50% of the time, and {{m|Milk Drink}} allows it to restore its {{stat|HP}}. {{p|Bayleef}} and {{p|Croconaw}} should be able to stand up to Miltank, but {{p|Quilava}} will have trouble thanks to its {{m|Rollout}} move. Try using status ailments, like {{DL|Status ailment|Poison}} or {{DL|Status ailment|Sleep}}, to take it down.

[[Whitney]] sobs uncontrollably when she loses, ignoring you altogether. Unable to receive the badge, you turn to leave when Lass Carrie suggests trying again. Whitney finally gives up the {{badge|Plain}}, which enables the use of {{m|Strength}} in the field. She also hands over {{TM|45|Attract}} as a prize. In addition, she mentions that something called the [[Pokéathlon Dome]] is now open next to the [[National Park]], north of the city.


After defeating her, Whitney sobs uncontrollably, ignoring you altogether.  Unable to receive your new badge, the frustrated Trainer turns to leave when one of the junior Trainers stops you. She speaks to Whitney, and the Gym Leader finally gives up the {{badge|Plain}} (which gives a Speed boost to a Trainer's Pokémon), {{TM|45|Attract}}, and the ability to use {{m|Strength}} outside of battle.

Before leaving for {{rt|35|Johto}}, stop by the flower shop just east of the Gym. The woman inside talks about an {{p|Sudowoodo|odd tree}} on {{rt|36|Johto}} that actually squirms around to avoid contact with water. Seeing your new Plain Badge, she hands over the {{key|IV|SquirtBottle}} to help provoke it, hoping to discover the truth behind it.


After obtaining the {{key|IV|Berry Pots}} on {{rt|36|Johto}}, this same woman will be offering [[Mulch]] for sale.

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.

Goldenrod City

Goldenrod City

Welcome to Goldenrod, the largest metropolis in Johto and sister city to Saffron in Kanto. This sprawling city boasts several major attractions, including a Pokémon Gym, Bike Shop, Game Corner, Radio Tower, and Department Store. There is so much to do in the big city that it is easy to forget about a single shady character. But with a Rocket Grunt keeping tabs on the Radio Tower, expect to save the city sooner or later. But first thing's first, let's see the sights!


Bike Shop

The Bike Shop has moved to the city's southeast neighborhood from Cerulean City in Kanto, but demand has not been very strong. Realizing that you have a lot of traveling to do, the owner offers to loan you a Bicycle in the hopes that the advertising will increase interest, and business will pick up. Riding the bike is faster than traveling on foot, and he gains new customers—everybody's happy!

Game Corner

At Goldenrod Game Corner, players can win coins by playing the new Voltorb Flip game. The game features a 5×5 grid of tiles, underneath which are numbers (which multiply the current score) and Voltorb (which Selfdestruct, dropping the score to zero). The total number of points and Voltorb in each set of five cards is noted on the edge of the field. The game advances to more difficult levels once all of the 2× and 3× multipliers have been found. Higher levels give the player a chance to win several hundred coins at a time, which can be redeemed for prizes. Talk to Mr. Game to receive a Coin Case, and start saving up!

Goldenrod Tunnel

The Goldenrod Tunnel runs north-south under the west side of the city, with a small access hallway leading to the basement of the Department Store. The underground hallway houses three shops and a photo booth.


Bargain Shop

The northern shop is only open on Monday mornings, from 4:00am to 9:59am. This merchant deals in valuable items; while having no use themselves, they can be resold elsewhere for decent profit. Each of these items may only be purchased once per week.

Pokémon Salon

The Pokémon Salon, the center shop, is operated by two brothers. Their services will raise a Pokémon's friendship, though at different rates. The younger brotherSuWeFr charges $300, while the older brotherTuThSa charges $500. Their shop is closed on Mondays.

Herb Shop

The Herb Shop, the southernmost shop, sells medicinal herbs that heal or revive Pokémon and are less expensive than their traditional counterparts. The downside is that Pokémon do not enjoy their bitter taste, so their friendship rating will decrease slightly as a result. This shop is only open on Saturdays and Sundays.

Bill's House

Bill, the inventor of the Pokémon PC Storage system, lives on the waterfront with his mother and sister. He is currently away on business in Ecruteak City, but since you are using his storage system, his sister gives out his phone number. Calling Bill is a useful way of checking the number of Pokémon stored in the current Box.

After meeting him in Ecruteak, he returns home to Goldenrod. Stop by his house afterwards to receive a gift from him.

Name Rater

The Name Rater lives in the house to the west of the Goldenrod Gym. Like his counterpart in Lavender Town, he evaluates a Pokémon's nickname, and allows the Trainer to think up new nicknames for them.

Mood Tester

The woman in the house near the Bike Shop will evaluate the friendship rating of your lead Pokémon. There are certain Pokémon, like Espeon and Umbreon, that can only be acquired when happy with their Trainer. There are many things that can be done to raise a Pokémon's friendship, like grooming it, feeding it vitamins, or simply walking with it.

Global Terminal

The Global Terminal is located west of the Radio Tower. Inside, Trainers can interact with others from around the world. Trainers can trade, share pictures of their dressed-up Pokémon and PC Boxes, and share Battle Videos taken with the Vs. Recorder.

Radio Tower

The Radio Tower stands tall directly aside of the train station. Every day, the Pokémon Lottery Corner on 1F draws a lucky number. If this number matches the OT number of any of your Pokémon, then you win a prize! The grand prize is a Master Ball, while other prizes include a Max Revive, Exp. Share, PP Up, and Ultra Ball.

Speak to another woman behind the counter to play a promotional quiz game. Answer all five questions correctly to win a Radio Card for the Pokégear. Once installed, you can tune into the following programs.

Street Corner Channel Snap 3 (bottom-left) Broadcasts "Trainer Profiles", a show which describes a randomly-selected Trainer class. Switches with Town Channel every hour.
Town Channel Unknown 3 (bottom-left) Broadcasts "That Town, These People", a show which details the top three landmarks or people in any given city or town. Switches with the Street Corner Channel every hour.
Variety Channel Silver Drama 4 (bottom-right) Broadcasts "Pokémon Search Party", "Serial Radio Drama", and "Buena's Password". These three programs rotate every hour.
Buena's Password Buena 4 (bottom-right) Broadcasts one password every few hours. Trainers tune in at 2am, 5am, 8am, 11am, 2pm, 5pm, 8pm, or 11pm then visit Buena to recite the password to earn points redeemable for prizes.


After completing the quiz, the local Gym Leader will compliment you before returning to the Gym.

Visit Buena in her second-floor studio to receive the Blue Card, which stores points earned from her password show. By amassing enough points, you can earn valuable prizes.

Magnet Train Station

The Magnet Train Station is located next to the Radio Tower. Currently shut down, this bullet train normally travels between Johto's Goldenrod and Kanto's Saffron twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The other major method of travel between regions—sailing on the S.S. Aqua—runs much less frequently, making the Magnet Train the ideal method of transportation.

Goldenrod Department Store

Located just east of the Pokémon Center, the Goldenrod Department Store is the largest shop in Johto. The behemoth building consists of eight floors, including the rooftop and basement, and has a wide array of items up for sale.


Basement

While there are no shops in the basement, you can take the elevator downstairs to get an Ultra Ball, a Burn Heal, an Ether and a Super Potion.

2F

The Trainer's Market sells basic equipment and items that Trainers may find useful in their travels.

3F

The Battle Connection sells temporary stat-enhancing items.

4F

A pharmacy known as the Medicine Box sells permanent stat-enhancing items.

5F

The TM Corner offers a handful of different Technical Machines for sale. On Sundays, there is a second shopkeeper who gives out TM27 (Return) if your lead Pokémon is happy, and TM21 (Frustration) if it is unhappy.

Time for a Trade

Also on 5F, there is a man who is hoping to trade his Machop for a Drowzee. Drowzee are common on Routes 34 and 35, and the Machop received in return will have an advantage at the Goldenrod Gym, and holds a Macho Brace which doubles EV growth.

6F

The Rooftop Atrium has vending machines that dispense tasty, health-restoring drinks. In addition, there is a raffle known as the Daily Drawing Corner that may be entered for $300. First and second prizes change with the day, but third prize is always a random Berry chosen from a group of seven.
