Viridian City

Viridian Gym

Viridian Gym

Blue is the only Gym Leader not to specialize in a single type, instead using mostly the same team he had during his time as Champion three years ago. This is the final Gym battle, and the most diverse opposing team yet; make sure to bring a team with a wide range of powerful attacks. The Gym itself has had an upgrade from the days of Generation II; Blue has installed a maze of spinner tiles to confound any would-be challengers, throwing one last obstacle between you and your final badge. In order to reach the Gym Leader, you'll need to enter the maze from the southwest. Like the final Gym of the Johto region, the floor is unstable, and your lead Pokémon retreats into its Poké Ball. The maze itself isn't all that difficult to figure out, but just be aware that there are three Ace Trainers and a Double Team duo near the stopper tiles, and they all enjoy using Trick Room.

His Pidgeot and Gyarados are both vulnerable to Template:Type2 attacks, so set off a few Thunderbolts or any other strong Electric-type attack — Gyarados will fall quickly due to its quadruple weakness. Rhydon and Arcanine are afraid of water and Ground, meaning that moves like Surf, Waterfall and Earthquake will be a big help; you can also use Template:Type2 attacks like Leaf Storm against Rhydon and Template:Type2 attacks like Stone Edge against Arcanine. His Exeggutor is at a disadvantage from a Fire-, Flying-, Dark- and especially Template:Type2 assaults; take it out with moves like Flamethrower, Brave Bird, Crunch or Megahorn. Finally, his Machamp; a strong fighter but one with little defense against Flying- or Template:Type2 attacks. Just be extra careful when using Flying-type Pokémon -- it has Stone Edge and ThunderPunch to punish them, and with ability No Guard, 80% accuracy of Stone Edge no longer matters. Stone Edge also does double damage against flying Pokémon, so make sure you don't use Fly! Psychic-type moves like Psychic will bring it down quickly.

Viridian Gym
The Earth Badge

Congratulations, you just defeated the final Kanto Gym! Blue awards you the Earth Badge, the final of 16, which allows the use of Rock Climb outside of battle. That means that you can finally scale all of those odd-looking cliffs, and maybe find a rare item. He also gives you TM92 (Trick Room) as a prize, a wily move that distorts the dimension so slower Pokémon can attack first.

With shiny new badge in hand, you exit the Gym and immediately get a call from Professor Oak. He's got something for you, so walk back to Pallet Town through the express path(the ledges) of Route 1.

Pallet Town

Oak's Pokémon Lab

In recognition for defeating the eight Gyms of Kanto, Oak gives you the last of the HMs, HM08 (Rock Climb). He soon spots your badge collection, and now that you've earned all 16, he grants you access to Mt. Silver off in the west. The hallowed mountain is strictly off-limits to the average Trainer, but by now you've proven that you are more than an average, run-of-the-mill Trainer. But before you run off to that harsh and forbidding mountain, there are a few loose ends to tie up, including a few legendary Pokémon. First off, fly to Cerulean City and head east to reach the Power Plant.

Zapdos

Now that you have all 16 badges, you can find the second of Kanto's legendary birds roosting just outside the Power Plant. Zapdos is weak against Ice- and Template:Type2 moves, so use attacks of those types to slash its HP. Then, switch to Grass-, Fighting-, Bug-, or Template:Type2 moves so that you only inflict half-damage. This is the only Zapdos in the game, so make every attempt to catch it. However, like with Articuno, if you accidentally defeat it, you can make it reappear by defeating the Elite Four and the Champion again.

With a new legendary added to your collection, your next stop is a dark, creepy cave in the region's north side. Fly back to Cerulean City.

Cerulean City

Cerulean Cave

Cerulean Cave

The path through Cerulean Cave is as twisted as a tangled ball of yarn. It's also pitch-dark inside, so you'll need to bring a Pokémon that knows Flash to see where you're going, as well as the HM moves Surf, Rock Smash, and Rock Climb. If you can make it to the back of the basement floor, you'll find Mewtwo, master of the Cerulean Cave.

1F

Walk north to the water's edge, and surf to the northeast. Climb the ladder to the second floor for an item detour.

2F

You can only reach a small area of 2F from here. Follow the path around, and smash the two rocks to find TM24 (Thunderbolt). Retrace your steps back to 1F.

1F

Surf off to the west, and climb out of the water. Grab the Nugget, and climb the southern ladder.

2F

Use Rock Smash to break the boulder, follow the path to a PP Up, and take the ladder back to 1F.

1F

Head south and break the group of three brittle rocks to find a hidden Hyper Potion. Walk east and climb up onto the rock ledge, and pick up the Full Restore near the green crystals. Continue east, then head north and climb the ladder.

2F

This wide-open area of 2F hides a handful of hidden items, so fire up your Dowsing MCHN to find an Ultra Ball, a Big Pearl, a PP Up, a Zinc, and a Full Heal. Take the ladder back downstairs.

1F

Walk west under the bridge, then turn south. Check the smaller of the green crystals for a hidden Revive, and climb the stairway onto the bridge. Head to the northeast for a Max Elixir, then northwest for a Sea Incense lying near another crystal. The narrow trail along the north wall wraps around along the east wall as well, to serve as a quick escape route. At the end of this path is a Rare Candy hidden in the green crystals. Climb the ladder at the south end of the bridge to reach 2F.

2F

In this area of 2F, you can find an Ultra Ball, a hidden Protein, and an Odd Incense. Follow the trail to the northeast, then follow along the north wall to the ladder in the northwest.

1F

Take the ladder to the basement floor.

B1F

Head south, and use Rock Climb twice near the western wall to reach another Ultra Ball. Turn east and use Rock Climb again; detour to the east to pick up a Dusk Stone. Climb the rock wall and head north, where you can break the two rocks in the corner to find a Max Revive. Follow the trail around along the north wall, and take the first right turn to reach another Max Revive. Walk all the way to the south, and swim out into the murky water. Surf to the northeast, and use Rock Smash on the two rocks to find another hidden Ultra Ball. Follow the trail to the north, and use Rock Climb twice to reach an Electirizer to the east. Head south, jump the ledge, and climb down the rocks. Smash the nearby rock to find a Nugget on the crystal, and continue south. Step out into the water, and surf all the way to the southeast to grab a Black Sludge. Loop around to the northeast across the water, and you'll finally run into the Genetic Pokémon.

Mewtwo

Now that you've trekked through the entire winding cave, you finally have a shot at catching Mewtwo. This vicious Template:Type2 is vulnerable to Bug-, Ghost-, and Template:Type2, so start the battle with attacks of those types to inflict the most damage. After that, wear it down little-by-little with Fighting- or Template:Type2 moves. Its only offensive move, Psycho Cut, is extremely powerful, so be careful that it doesn't knock your team out before you can catch it. On the other hand, if you happen to defeat it instead, then you can make it reappear by defeating the Elite Four and Champion again; it will reappear as many times as you enter the Hall of Fame until you finally catch it.
