Mahogany Town
44 is a quiet mountain road that serves as the only path into Blackthorn City. Both the north and south paths lack any tall grass, but Pokémon like Tangela and Lickitung can be found in the grass between the two lakes. The Ice Path is located in the east.

Mahogany Town is a small, quiet town in northern Johto.  On your first visit, the Mahogany Gym is blocked off, and a man at the town's east end prevents travel to 44.  Buy a List of key items in Generation IV for pdollar300 as a souvenir; you'll eventually trade it to someone in Kanto for a TM.  There is no official Poké Mart here, but the Souvenir Shop in the center of town sells odd items (like Valuable items) and the standard Poké Balls and Potions.  There's <i>certainly</i> nothing suspicious about the two thugs in the shop, or the poorly-concealed radio antenna in the tree outside.  If you flip open your Pokégear and turn on the radio, you won't hear any of the normal stations.  Instead, a strange radio pulse is being broadcast on all channels.  There's something suspicious about that Souvenir Shop, but there's nothing you can do just yet.

Head up north to check out the Lake of Rage. You may have done these next few parts earlier in the game. Whichever of these parts you have done, just skip over parts below until you come across something you haven't done.

Route 43
43 is a rural, tree-lined path that runs north-south between Mahogany Town and the Lake of Rage.  To the north, you'll find two places where you can access the Lake of Rage.  Team Rocket has taken over the guardhouse here, and anyone who tries to pass through the building will get shaken down for pdollar1,000 as a "toll".  Fight a few Trainers, and wander north towards the lake.

Ice Path is a mid-sized cave that connects 44 directly to Blackthorn City. Navigation can be difficult, as some areas of the cave are covered by a layer of ice. It is also the only location where wild Swinub and Delibird can be found.

The Lake of Rage is a large lake, brimming with clear water.  It used to be known as a fishing spot with the liveliest Magikarp around, but now a raging red Gyarados dominates the entire lake.  It's also Weather, which has flooded the small forest to the west of the lake.  Surf out onto the water to collect all the items, then approach the red Gyarados.  Whether you catch it, defeat it, or let it get away, you'll spot the List of key items in Generation IV floating nearby - take this to Mr. Pokémon back on 30 to trade it for the Experience-affecting item.

After battling the Gyarados and swimming back to the shore, you'll see a man in a black cape with a Dragonite standing near the sign.  He introduces himself as Lance, and asks you to assist him in his investigation. <br><br>
Follow him back to Mahogany.

Later...
Visit the lake again on a Wednesday after you run Team Rocket out of Mahogany Town.  You'll find that the water level has dropped, altering the area's layout.  This is the only time that you can meet certain Trainers and get particular items, so it's worth it to return in the middle of the week.

Rocket Hideout - Mahogany
When you enter the Souvenir Shop, you'll walk in on Lance's Dragonite <i>persuading</i> the thugs to talk.  Lance shoves a cabinet out of the way, and reveals a set of stairs leading to the basement.  Walk down the stairs, and you will find yourself in Team Rocket's underground base.

As soon as you step in front of any Persian statue, the security camera inside will alert two Rocket grunts to attack you.  Follow the hallway to the west, and turn south at the first opening.  Turn south again before reaching another Persian statue, and battle Scientist Gregg.  Flip the switch on the PC to deactivate the security cameras, and pick up the Battle item  Head back north, and turn east near the second Persian statue to pick up a Potion.  Walk all the way south, and follow the hallway to the west, where you'll find a Valuable item, a warp to the entrance, and the stairs leading to the next floor.

After that, go east to reach the next ice patch. This one is smaller, and there is an item, 07, lying on the far side of the ice. After that, cross over the platform to reach the northeast ladder.

When you walk down the stairs, you'll meet up with Lance again, who will heal your Pokémon to full health.  You'll see the door to the generator room nearby, but it's locked up tight.  Fight past the Rocket grunts, and take the stairs in the southeast.

B1F (north)
There are four boulders scattered around this floor, and each one must be dropped through a different hole to form a path on the floor below. Go north and loop around to find the first two boulders.

Lance has discovered that in order to shut off the radio transmitter, you need the voice of Petrel, one of Team Rocket's executives.  Evidently, he's hiding out in their leader's office, which is protected by a password - so in order to access the radio broadcast room, you need Petrel's voice; but to get that, you need to track down the two passwords to unlock Petrel's office first.  If you're looking to only fight a few Rockets, track down the female grunt nearby, and the male grunt to the southwest; the female gives you the first password - "SLOWPOKETAIL" - while the male tells you the second one - "RATICATETAIL".  Grab the Battle item and the Vitamin in the southwest, pick up the 49 to the northeast, and a Status ailment healing item along the east wall.  Take the stairs in the northeast back to B2F.

Start off with the southernmost boulder. Use Strength to move it southward and drop it through the southwest hole. Go back and move the second boulder as far north as possible. Head to the east side to reach the third boulder, and drop it through the southeast hole. Go north and drop the fourth boulder through the north hole. Finally, move the second boulder to the northwest hole. Climb down the ladder in the northeast.

B2F (west)
The boulders from the floor above have formed a convenient spiral that leads to the center of the room. Check the corners for items, including a Max Potion, and a hidden Carbos. Follow the boulders to the room's center, pick up the Full Heal, and climb down the ladder.

B2F
B3F
Head south and check out the machinery to find a hidden Battle item.  Follow the hallway all the way to the west, and take the stairs back down to B3F.
Rock Smash the rock, or loop around to the right, to reach the NeverMeltIce. Climb up the east ladder.

B3F
B2F (east)
You've made it to Petrel's office, and you've collected the two passwords needed to open the door - and look who shows up with such great timing.  It seems that Lance defeated him easily, and he's still stewing over what Lance said to him.  He shoves you before running off again, leaving you to confront Petrel.  Don't forget to grab the Poké Ball nearby.
Go south, then head east across the platform. Stand two steps east of the platform, and slide south then east to reach 72. Turn around and slide west to reach the ladder.

When you enter the two passwords, the door slides away, and you walk up to... Giovanni?!  Didn't he run off after disbanding the team three years ago?  He did indeed, and the purple-haired copycat is Petrel, the second of Team Rocket's executives that you'll have to fight (after Proton in the Slowpoke Well). He's so confident that you won't succeed, he even tells you the password to the room with the broadcasting machine - "Hail Giovanni" - but unfortunately, it only works when it's in his voice. Get ready to battle!
B1F (south)
Inspect the stalagmite on the south edge of the ice for a hidden Revive. Head northwest, and move the boulder one space southward. Slide west over the ice, then south to reach the Iron. Climb up the western ladder.

Grab the Protein on the platform and head south. Another of the Kimono Girls can be found to the south; it seems that she got stuck on the ice. Slide down, left, down, then right to reach her. After a quick shove to clear ground, she thanks you and leaves. Slide left, up, right, down, right, and down to reach the PP Up, then head south to reach the exit. Welcome to Blackthorn City!

When you beat him, he runs off. Once he leaves, the Murkrow that was sitting nearby demonstrates its ability to mimic voices.  It copied Petrel's voice, and it remembers the password!  It runs back the way you got here, but make a quick detour up the southern stairs to find 46 before following it. It runs all the way back to the generator room and screams the password at the door, mimicking the voice of Petrel.  The voice-recognition system unlocks the door, and Murkrow runs off.  But just as you step up to the machine, Ariana, another executive, stops you.  She and a Rocket grunt are more than happy to finish you off in a two-on-one battle, but Lance shows up just in time.
The quiet mountain retreat known as Blackthorn City lies isolated in the northeast. The main attraction is the Blackthorn Gym, the final Gym in the region. North of the Gym is Dragon's Den, a training ground for Dragon specialists. On Saturdays, Santos of the Week Siblings can be found here.

Time for a Trade
The girl in the eastern house is looking to trade. She offers her Dodrio in exchange for a female Dragonair. The Dodrio arrives holding a Smoke Ball.

Even though she's been defeated, Ariana doesn't seem to care. She tells you that the broadcast experiment was a complete success, and that this hideout has served its purpose.  With that, Team Rocket pulls out of Mahogany for good.  Lance inspects the generator, and tells you that the only way to disrupt the signal is to force the six Electrode that are powering the machine to faint. Lance splits the job with you, so you only need to battle three. These Electric type Pokémon are Level 23, so be prepared. Lance says that the signal has stopped, and gives you 05 to show his appreciation.  Run up the stairs, and step on the warp to get back to the entrance. <br><br>
The Move Tutor House
Now you can challenge the Mahogany Gym!
There are four people in the southwest house, all of which provide valuable services regarding a Pokémon's moves.
* Move Deleter: He can help a Pokémon forget any move, even HM moves.
* Move Maniac: In exchange for a Heart Scale, he helps a Pokémon remember any move it had previously forgotten.
* Grandma Wilma: When shown a Dragon Pokémon that is happy with its Trainer, she will teach it the ultimate Dragon-type move, Draco Meteor.
* Ultimate Move Tutor: He teaches any fully-evolved starter Pokémon the ultimate move of its type; Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn, or Hydro Cannon.

The Mahogany Gym specializes in Ices, so Fire- and Fighting attacks will generally be the most effective here; however, many of the Pokémon here are Water/Ice-types, so Electrics wouldn't be a bad idea, either. Pryce is at home in the winter wilderness, and has installed slick, icy tiles in his Gym to thwart all but the most determined Trainers. To reach him, you'll need to manipulate the blocks that are sitting out on the slick ice.
The Blackthorn Gym uses mostly Water and Dragon Pokémon. Waters resist Ice and Fire attacks and are weak to Electric. Dragons take less damage from Grass, Fire, Water, and Electric moves, and are more vulnerable to Dragon- and Ice-type attacks. The floor has become unstable due to the lava bubbling underfoot, forcing your lead Pokémon to return to its Poké Ball. Reaching the Gym Leader requires crossing the lava on movable platforms. These platforms each have a blue tile, which causes it to rotate, and two arrow tiles, which move it in the respective direction.

In the first room, walk straight across the ice to bump into a block, sending it skidding into a second block. Slide , , , to reach the door.

|}

In the second room, walk up around Skier Diana and slide → into the two blocks. Head up to reach the door.
Clair's Gyarados can lower its opponent's Attack with its Intimidate Ability. It cannot make good use of its Twister and Dragon Pulse moves due to its lower Special Attack, but Bite builds on its already-high Attack. Both of her Dragonair can inflict paralysis with Thunder Wave, before executing strong moves like Dragon Pulse, Fire Blast, and Aqua Tail. 25 from the Goldenrod Department Store deals serious damage to Gyarados, while 14 from the Goldenrod Department Store or 72 from Ice Path can help against her two Dragonair. Her Kingdra's only weakness is Dragon-type attacks, and can beat its target down with the powerful Hydro Pump, Dragon Pulse, and Hyper Beam attacks. Unless your Pokémon happen to know a Dragon attack, you likely have to hammer it with strong, neutrally effective moves.

In the final room, walk past Boarder Deandre and slide → across the ice to the two blocks.  Walk ↑ to fight Skier Jill, then slide →, ↓, ←, ↑, →, ↑, →, ↑ to fight Boarder Gerardo.  After that battle, slide ← then ↑ to reach Pryce.  His Seel and Dewgong can attack with the Snore and Sleep Talk moves, so don't let your guard down, even if they're asleep.

Clair refuses to accept defeat. She claims that you are still not ready for the Pokémon League, and directs you to take the "Dragon-master challenge". There is a small shrine in the Dragon's Den, a large cave located underneath the city. If you can reach it, she will give up the Rising Badge. Bring along a Pokémon with Surf and Whirlpool, and cross the lake behind the Gym.

After defeating him, Pryce gives out the Glacier, which increases your party's Special Attack and Special Defense, and also allows the use of Whirlpool in the field.  Pryce also gives you 07, a symbol of winter's harshness.  One more badge to go!

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
These pages follow the remade Nintendo DS iteration, not Pokémon Gold and Silver. The guide for those games can be found here.

Route 44

Route 44

Route 44 is a quiet mountain road that serves as the only path into Blackthorn City. Both the north and south paths lack any tall grass, but Pokémon like Tangela and Lickitung can be found in the grass between the two lakes. The Ice Path is located in the east.

Ice Path is a mid-sized cave that connects Route 44 directly to Blackthorn City. Navigation can be difficult, as some areas of the cave are covered by a layer of ice. It is also the only location where wild Swinub and DelibirdSS can be found.

1F (northwest)

Pass over the first patch of ice and continue on to the second. This one is larger, and the large pieces of ice make travel more difficult.

#1 Up, Left, Up, Left, Down, Left, Up, Right

After that, go east to reach the next ice patch. This one is smaller, and there is an item, HM07 (Waterfall), lying on the far side of the ice. After that, cross over the platform to reach the northeast ladder.

Puzzle Solution
#2 Right, Down, Left, Up, Left, Down, Left, Up, Right

B1F (north)

There are four boulders scattered around this floor, and each one must be dropped through a different hole to form a path on the floor below. Go north and loop around to find the first two boulders.

Boulder Solution
#1 (southwest) Right 1, Down 3, Left 5, Down 1, Right 1
#2 (west) Up 4, Right 1, Down 1
#3 (east) Left 1, Down 5, Left 1, Down 2, Left 4
#4 (north) Up 2, Right 2, Up 3, Left 2

B3F

Smash the rock, or loop around to the right, to reach the NeverMeltIce. Climb up the east ladder.

B2F (east)

Go south, then head east across the platform. Stand two steps east of the platform, and slide south then east to reach TM72 (Avalanche). Turn around and slide west to reach the ladder.

B1F (south)

Inspect the stalagmite on the south edge of the ice for a hidden Revive. Head northwest, and move the boulder one space southward. Slide west over the ice, then south to reach the Iron. Climb up the western ladder.

1F (southeast)

Grab the Protein on the platform and head south. Another of the Kimono Girls can be found to the south; it seems that she got stuck on the ice. Slide down, left, down, then right to reach her. After a quick shove to clear ground, she thanks you and leaves. Slide left, up, right, down, right, and down to reach the PP Up, then head south to reach the exit. Welcome to Blackthorn City!

Blackthorn City

Blackthorn City

The quiet mountain retreat known as Blackthorn City lies isolated in the northeast. The main attraction is the Blackthorn Gym, the final Gym in the region. North of the Gym is Dragon's Den, a training ground for Dragon-type specialists. On Saturdays, Santos of the Week Siblings can be found here.

Time for a Trade

The girl in the eastern house is looking to trade. She offers her Dodrio in exchange for a female Dragonair. The Dodrio arrives holding a Smoke Ball.

The Move Tutor House

There are four people in the southwest house, all of which provide valuable services regarding a Pokémon's moves.

 • Move Deleter: He can help a Pokémon forget any move, even HM moves.
 • Move Maniac: In exchange for a Heart Scale, he helps a Pokémon remember any move it had previously forgotten.
 • Grandma Wilma: When shown a Dragon Pokémon that is happy with its Trainer, she will teach it the ultimate Dragon-type move, Draco Meteor.
 • Ultimate Move Tutor: He teaches any fully-evolved starter Pokémon the ultimate move of its type; Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn, or Hydro Cannon.

Blackthorn Gym

Blackthorn Gym

Blackthorn City Pokémon Gym
Leader: Clair

The Blessed User of Dragon Pokémon

The Blackthorn Gym uses mostly Water-type and Dragon-type Pokémon.

TM25 (Thunder) from the Goldenrod Department Store deals serious damage to Gyarados, while TM14 (Blizzard) from the Goldenrod Department Store or TM72 (Avalanche) from Ice Path can help against her two Dragonair.
