-----
After selecting New Game, Professor Oak appears and gives a brief introduction to the world of Pokémon. Then he asks the player to choose both a gender and a name for the main character. After that, he or she wakes up at home.

Turn on the PC to read a bit of Mail from your friend and neighbor, Lyra/Ethan before heading downstairs. Mom suddenly remembers that Professor Elm was looking for you, and enables the Bag, Trainer Card, Save, and Options icons. Head outside to New Bark Town!

Just like in Gold and Silver, Professor Oak introduces new Trainers to the Pokémon world.  His lecture is important for new players, though it's nothing new to veterans of the series.  Once he is done talking, choose a gender for your character. After choosing, the character's gender cannot be changed. Then, you have to enter your character's name. The name cannot be changed either, so double-check that you have what you want. Press "OK" when you are happy with your choice, and your sprite will shrink to the overworld sprite.
New Bark Town is a rather boring, quaint town, having only four buildings. The house to the east belongs to you and Mom, the house to the south belongs to your friend, the southwest house is home to another resident, and the big building to the north is Professor Elm's lab. When you step outside, a Marill appears, mistaking you for its Trainer. Just then, Lyra/Ethan leaves the second floor of the lab, and Marill leaves with its Trainer. Ignore Silver spying on the professor for now, and enter the building.

After listening to Oak's lecture, you wake up in your room.  Walk downstairs to find your mom, who enables the <i>Bag, Trainer Card, Save,</i> and <i>Options</i> on the lower screen.  When she is done talking, step outside to explore your hometown.

After you take your first step, A Marill runs into you, mistaking you for its Trainer, Lyra/Ethan.  Your opposite-gender counterpart calls it back, and they both run off.  As in Gold and Silver, the shady guy peering into Elm's lab will shove you away, telling you to get lost.  Enter the lab and speak to Professor Elm, who asks you a favor: it seems his friend Mr. Pokémon has found something, and needs you to bring it back to the lab. He feels that it is too dangerous to leave by yourself, so he lets you choose either Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile to accompany you.  Before you leave, Elm explains the benefits of letting a Pokémon walk beside you, outside of its Poké Ball.  This is one of the most recognizable differences from Gold & Silver: a Trainer's lead Pokémon will follow behind them, like Pikachu did in Yellow.
Professor Elm's Lab
Professor Elm explains a bit about his research, theorizing that although Poké Balls are convenient, there must be advantages to walking alongside a Pokémon. He asks you to choose one of the three Pokémon from the machine in order to test his theory. Just then, he gets an email from Mr. Pokémon, an acquaintance who keeps raving about his weird discoveries. Elm assumes that it is another Pokémon Egg this time, but asks you to visit anyway.

Totodile is highly recommended since your opponent will then choose Chikorita which can easily be beaten by Pidgey, or even Croconaw's Ice Fang.
Mr. Pokémon lives on Route 30, but you'll have to cut through Route 29 and Cherrygrove City first.  On your way out, Elm's aide gives you five Potions.  Step back outside to find Lyra/Ethan, who tells you to visit your mom before leaving.  Stop back home to pick up your Pokégear from Mom.  It only has a Pokégear now, but will soon act as a map and radio as well.  Leave your home and walk west towards 29, and Elm runs out of the lab to give you his phone number.

Route 29
* Like Bulbasaur, the Grass Chikorita is strong against Rock-, Ground-, and Water Pokémon, and is vulnerable to Fire-, Bug-, Poison-, Flying-, and Ice attacks. A DefenseSpecial Defense Pokémon, it learns few damaging moves as it grows. Instead, it is able to learn Status moves like PoisonPowder, Reflect, and Light Screen. Although it can learn the powerful Petal Dance and SolarBeam moves later on, its mediocre offenses cannot truly put them to good use.

There's no way to avoid the tall grass on the way to Cherrygrove, so train your starter by fighting off the wild Pokémon.  Follow the dead-end trail in the northeast to find a Potion in the clearing.  Further west is the first Apricorn tree that you'll find, though you don't have anything to store it in right now. Stop by this area on a Tuesday to find Tuscany, one of the seven Week Siblings, who will give you a Type-enhancing item on your first meeting.  Continue west to reach Cherrygrove City.
* Charmander's successor, the Fire Cyndaquil is strong against Grass-, Bug-, Ice-, and Steel Pokémon but has trouble against Water, Ground, and Rock moves. Its Special Attack and Speed are the best of the three Pokémon; an advantage as most Fire attacks are Special moves. However, its low defenses and HP means that it may not last long in battle.

{| class="expandable" align="center" style="background: #soulsilver color light; -moz-border-radius: 1em; border: 5px solid #heartgold color light;"
* Johto's version of Squirtle, the Water Totodile is great against Fire-, Rock-, and Ground-type Pokémon, but struggles against Grass and Electric attacks. It learns a variety of strong Physical moves, which work well with its high Attack. It can eventually achieve good coverage, thanks to moves like Ice Fang, Crunch, and Superpower. However, most of the Water moves it can learn depend on its lower Special Attack.

! Available Pokémon
The Pokémon immediately appears from inside its Poké Ball, and Elm reveals the location of Mr. Pokémon's house: on 30, north of Cherrygrove City. On the way out, one of his aides hands out five Potions for the trip.

Outside, Lyra/Ethan suggests showing your new Pokémon to Mom, who has just received your Pokégear from the repair shop. The device only has a Pokégear function at the moment, but will soon act as a map and radio as well. Leave home and walk west toward 29, where Elm rushes outside to give you his phone number.

The Apricorns
On the northwest hill is a Apricorn tree. Apricorns are a special fruit that can be made into unique varieties of Poké Ball by a certain craftsman. They can also be processed into drinks that improve a Pokémon's out-of-battle skills at a unique training facility. However, they cannot be gathered without IV.

The Week Siblings
The Week Siblings are seven siblings that visit various areas around the region, and give out different power-up items for Pokémon to hold. They will begin appearing after the first Gym has been defeated. Each sibling only gives out their respective power-up once. On subsequent meetings, they will give a certain Ribbon to your lead Pokémon. Tuscany appears in the center of the route every Tuesday, and hands out the Type-enhancing item. When held, it boosts a Pokémon's Psychic attacks by 20%.

Cherrygrove City
Cherrygrove City
Cherrygrove City is the first city in the region that has a Pokémon Center and a Poké Mart. Pokémon Centers are essentially hospitals where creatures can be restored to perfect health. The PC on the counter is always available for Trainers to organize their Pokémon. Poké Marts offer a wide range of items for sale, from Potions to Poké Balls.

On your way into the city, a nimble old man ambushes you and gives you a speedy tour of the city - the Pokémon Center, the Poké Mart, the path to Route 30, and the ocean. After the tour, he gives you the Running Shoes.  These shoes appear on the touch screen, and can be equipped indefinitely (unlike in Generation III, where it was controlled by the B button). Heal up at the Poké Center if need be, buy a few Potions, and head for Cherrygrove's northern exit. Before you can leave, the Guide Gent shows up again, this time to give you the Pokégear for your Pokégear, which allows you to view a map of the Johto region anytime.  Leave the city for 30 to the north.

City Tour
Upon entering Cherrygrove, an old man insists on giving you a Cherrygrove City of the small city. Highlights include the Pokémon Center, Poké Mart, exit to Route 30, and the ocean. After a quick jog through the city, he gives you a brand-new pair of Running Shoes. By holding the B Button, or tapping the icon on the touch screen, you can move at twice the walking speed.

When leaving for 30, Guide Gent appears with another gift. This time, he loads the Pokégear onto your Pokégear. This function displays a map of the current region, and features zoom and note-taking options.

Route 30
There's plenty of tall grass here, which makes this route an ideal spot for training.  Pick up the Potion near the pond, and continue north to reach the first house.  Talk to the man inside, and he will give you the List of key items in Generation IV, which means that you can finally start collecting them all.  Step outside and check his tree to pick the green Apricorn growing there. Walk north through the next patch of tall grass, and grab the Status ailment healing item to the left.  The route splits into two separate trails here; the western trail is currently blocked by two battling Youngsters, so wander through the tall grass of the eastern trail to find Mr. Pokémon's house at the northern end.  Grab the pink Apricorn from the tree, and head inside.
Several patches of tall grass make 30 an ideal spot to train young Pokémon. The path branches off halfway along, with the western trail continuing on, and the eastern trail leading directly to Mr. Pokémon's house.

Make sure your team is rested up, because as soon as you try to head east from Cherrygrove, that shady guy that was spying on Elm's lab ambushes you, forcing you into a battle. It turns out that he swiped one of Elm's Pokémon from the lab. Whichever you chose, his Pokémon will always have a type advantage against yours, so having a few Potions isn't a bad idea.

Elm's Lab
Hurry to Elm's lab to see the professor talking to the police. He seems to think that you're the one responsible, but Lyra/Ethan defends you, telling the police that they saw a kid with red hair spying on the lab. Realizing that you have just battled the suspect, the policeman asks you for his name. After naming your rival as the culprit, deliver the List of key items in Generation IV to the professor.  Elm is intrigued by the discovery, and promises to call you if he learns anything about the Egg. Once he realizes the Professor Oak gave you a Pokédex, he suggests that you challenge the eight Pokémon Gyms of Johto.  The first Gym is located in Violet City, off to the northwest. Before you leave (for good this time), stop back home to say goodbye to Mom.  She asks if you want to her to save your money; say yes, and she'll act as a bank, and will occasionally buy helpful items, like Potions or rare Berries (Unlike Generation II, the items are delivered in the Poké Mart or Department Store by a Delivery Man instead of through the players' PC). As you leave New Bark, Lyra/Ethan shows gives you a quick demonstration on how to catch a wild Pokémon.  After the battle, she/he gives you 5 Poké Balls to start you on your collection.  Now that you've delivered the Mystery Egg, Poké Marts have added Poké Balls to their inventory (buy 10 at once to receive a free Premier Ball), so with enough cash, you're free to start the hunt.<br>
Return to the lab to see a Policeman questioning Professor Elm. After noticing that Oak gave you a Pokédex, he suggests challenging the eight Pokémon Gyms of Johto, the first of which is located in Violet City to the northwest.

Mom Saves Money
Before leaving the town again, stop back home to visit Mom. She asks if she should save your money, and if so, a portion of your winnings will be sent home after each battle. She will occasionally buy helpful items, like Potions or rare Berries, which can be obtained from a deliveryman in any Poké Mart.

With Elm's errand complete, you can finally get to Violet City. <br>
On the way out of town, Lyra/Ethan gives a quick demonstration of how to catch a wild Pokémon. After the battle, she/he gives you five Pokés to start off your journey. By this point, all Poké Marts have added Poké Balls to their inventory, and buying ten at once also gets you a free Premier.
Return to Cherrygrove and head north to 30 again.

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
These pages follow the remade Nintendo DS iteration, not Gold and Silver. The guide for those games can be found here.

Introduction

The character's bedroom

After selecting New Game, Professor Oak appears and gives a brief introduction to the world of Pokémon. Then he asks the player to choose both a gender and a name for the main character. After that, he or she wakes up at home.

Home

Turn on the PC to read a bit of Mail from your friend and neighbor, Lyra/Ethan before heading downstairs. Mom suddenly remembers that Professor Elm was looking for you, and enables the Bag, Trainer Card, Save, and Options icons. Head outside to New Bark Town!

New Bark Town

New Bark Town

New Bark Town is a rather boring, quaint town, having only four buildings. The house to the east belongs to you and Mom, the house to the south belongs to your friend, the southwest house is home to another resident, and the big building to the north is Professor Elm's lab. When you step outside, a Marill appears, mistaking you for its Trainer. Just then, Lyra/Ethan leaves the second floor of the lab, and Marill leaves with its Trainer. Ignore the red-haired guy spying on the professor for now, and enter the building.

The Pokémon immediately appears from inside its Poké Ball, and Elm reveals the location of Mr. Pokémon's house: on Route 30, north of Cherrygrove City. On the way out, one of his aides hands out five Potions for the trip.

Outside, Lyra/Ethan suggests showing your new Pokémon to Mom, who has just received your Pokégear from the repair shop. The device only has a Phone function at the moment, but will soon act as a map and radio as well. Leave home and walk west toward Route 29, where Elm rushes outside to give you his phone number.

Route 29

Route 29

The winding Route 29 leads right to Cherrygrove City. The route forces westbound travelers to walk through patches of tall grass, but without Poké Balls, it is impossible to catch anything yet.

The Apricorns

On the northwest hill is a Grn Apricorn tree. Apricorns are a special fruit that can be made into unique varieties of Poké Ball by a certain craftsman. They can also be processed into drinks that improve a Pokémon's out-of-battle skills at a unique training facility. However, they cannot be gathered without a container in which to store them.

Tuscany appears in the center of the route every Tuesday, and hands out the TwistedSpoon. When held, it boosts a Pokémon's Psychic-type attacks by 20%.

City Tour

Upon entering Cherrygrove, an old man insists on giving you a tour of the small city. Highlights include the Pokémon Center, Poké Mart, exit to Route 30, and the ocean. After a quick jog through the city, he gives you a brand-new pair of Running Shoes. By holding the B Button, or tapping the icon on the touch screen, you can move at twice the walking speed.

When leaving for Route 30, Guide Gent appears with another gift. This time, he loads the Map Card onto your Pokégear. This function displays a map of the current region, and features zoom and note-taking options.

Route 30

Route 30

Several patches of tall grass make Route 30 an ideal spot to train young Pokémon. The path branches off halfway along, with the western trail continuing on, and the eastern trail leading directly to Mr. Pokémon's house.

Apricorns!

Most visitors to the southern house mistake it for the home of Mr. Pokémon. The man inside is so happy to have a visitor that he gives you an Apricorn Box. This box can hold up to 99 of each variety.

Mr. Pokémon's House

Mr. Pokémon ushers you inside, and presents the Mystery Egg to you to deliver to Professor Elm. He gives your Pokémon a chance to rest, then his guest steps up. Outside, you receive an urgent call from Elm. Without going into detail, he asks you to return to New Bark immediately!

Rival battle 1

Be sure to rest up before leaving the city! As soon as you leave for Route 29, that shady guy that was spying on Elm attacks. It turns out that he swiped one of the professor's Pokémon from the lab. Regardless of which Pokémon you chose, his will always have a type advantage.
