Route 21

Route 21

There are no items on this ocean route, and only 9 Trainers scattered among the waves.

Now, having traveled almost every route in Kanto, let's tie up some loose ends.

Power Plant

File:Power Plant III.png
Kanto's Power Plant

With Articuno and Moltres captured, let's hunt down the last of the trio. Like with the other birds, it's advised to bring a large number of Ultra Balls. To reach the Power Plant, venture east from Cerulean towards Rock Tunnel. Instead, at the tall grass north of the Poké Center, swim out into the river and follow it to the south. It's not far to the southern shore, where a lone PokéManiac is loitering around. Hop onto dry land and get ready to face some Electric-types!

This old building has a few items strewn around, but a word of caution: some of the items are actually Voltorb and Electrode in disguise. Just past the entrance room is a Max Potion. The room to the right is a dead-end with both an Elixir and TM17 (Protect). Continue south towards the exterior wall, ignoring the item lying there, and head to the east, where you'll find TM25 (Thunder) in the southeast room. Follow the narrow hallway to a Thunderstone and another Electrode in the northeast room. All that's left to do is head to the west.

The second legendary bird makes its nest in the final room of the Power Plant. It won't go down without a fight, so whittle it's health down and try inflicting a status condition before attempting to capture it. Once the battle is done, take the side exit, and fly back to Viridian. It's time to claim the final badge!

VIRIDIAN CITY POKéMON GYM

Now that Trainers have collected the seven other badges, the leader of Viridian Gym has finally returned. No one seems to know the identity of this figure in the shadows, but you'll soon see a familiar face...

After his defeat in Saffron, Giovanni returned to his post as leader of the Viridian Gym. His Gym turns out to be a favorite training spot for Ground-type Trainers, so Grass-, Water-, and Ice-types should have no trouble here. Keep firing off moves like Surf, Ice Beam, and Giga Drain, and the junior Trainers won't last long.

Viridian Gym
The Earth Badge

Congratulations, the eighth and final Gym is defeated! The Earth Badge commands obedience of all Pokémon, regardless of level. Giovanni hands out TM26 (Earthquake), a TM that he claims to have made when he originally acted as Gym Leader. He seems remorseful of his actions with Team Rocket, and he disbands the gang before disappearing.

With all 8 Gym badges collected, the way to Indigo Plateau is clear. Gather a team with Surf and Strength, and stop by a Poké Mart to pick up some potions and Ultra Balls. The elite Trainers at Indigo Plateau are tough enough, but the player has to get through Victory Road first, a grueling three-floored cave.

Head west to Route 22.
