After defeating Norman in Petalburg City, return to Mauville City. There, you will see Wattson outside his Gym. When you go and talk to him, he will ask you to shut down the generator installed in New Mauville, a subterranean power plant for the city, and gives you the Key item, which unlocks the door to the plant. You must surf east from 110 to reach New Mauville (its entrance is a cave).

After finding and entering it, the player will need to find the generator. There will be quite a few items scattered around inside, but some item balls will actually turn out to be Voltorb or Electrode. There are no Trainers here, but there are wild Pokémon wandering around.
With the III, you can finally venture into the windswept desert on 111. The powerful sandstorm deters most would-be explorers, so no one has yet claimed the valuable treasures lying among the dunes.

Mirage Tower
Mirage Tower is an elusive building located just inside the desert's southern entrance. The tower disappears and reappears as would-be explorers visit and leave the route. The ancient structure shows its age, with unstable floors and fallen rock scattered about. Progressing past these obstacles requires using the III and Rock Smash.

After shutting down the generator, leave New Mauville and head back to Mauville City. Wattson will thank you and give you 24. You should now head east from Mauville to 118.
Relic Recovery!
The tower's top floor holds two treasures from the ancient past. The Root and Claw Fossils belong to two species that once lived in the primordial ocean. The researchers at Devon Corporation back in Rustboro are able to revive any Fossil they receive into a long-lost Pokémon. The Root Fossil becomes the Lileep, while the Claw Fossil turns into the Anorith. Choose carefully! After removing either one, the tower begins to shake, and you fall from the building, landing just outside the entrance. The tower disappears down into the dunes, and the remaining Fossil falls away into the shifting sands.

Route 118
Desert Ruins
The unusual arrangement of stones to the south is known as the Desert Ruins. It is believed to mark the resting place of a legendary Pokémon. But with the entrance sealed, you won't be able to investigate until later.

Back to Petalburg City
Now that you've claimed your fourth Badge and combed the desert for treasure, your next stop is Petalburg City. The city is far to the southwest, but there are multiple ways to get there.
* Head northwest around the volcano to Fallarbor Town, then south through Meteor Falls to return to Rustboro.
* Go south from the desert to Mauville City, then west to Verdanturf Town. Cut through Rusturf Tunnel to return to Rustboro.
Once in Rustboro, be sure to stop by Devon Corporation on the way to have the researchers there revive your Fossil Pokémon.

E
E
E
E

The Petalburg Gym, which specializes in Normal Pokémon, is styled as a traditional dojo with multiple rooms. Each room has a single Trainer who uses special items to gain the upper hand in battle. The sign on each door gives a clue to the strategy of the Trainer in the room behind it. Rather than rely on items, each Trainer's strategy depends on the moves of their Pokémon. The first two rooms beyond the lobby are labeled "Speed" and "Accuracy". The three rooms farther on are named "Confusion", "Defense", and "Recovery". The final two rooms before the Gym Leader are labeled "Strength" and "One-Hit KO". A minimum of three Gym Trainers must be defeated to reach the Gym Leader. Fighting types like Machop and Makuhita will give you the upper hand here.

Surf across the water here. When you reach land, it's only a few steps north past some Trainers to 119.
In the final room, your father has been waiting for you. Now that you have earned four other Badges, he is now ready to accept your challenge. Norman leads with his Spinda; Teeter Dance allows it to confuse the target. Fighting Pokémon should watch out for its Psybeam! His Vigoroth is so restless that it can't sleep, due to its Vital Spirit Ability. While not a serious threat, it may land a critical hit with Slash. Linoone can be a serious problem, as Belly Drum halves its HP in order to boost its Attack by a whopping 300%! Luckily, the move fails if the user's HP has fallen below 50%. Slaking usually leads with Yawn; if you switch out your Pokémon to keep it from falling Sleep, your next Pokémon will be safe from attack. This is due to Slaking's Ability, Truant, which prevents it from attacking every other turn. All four of Norman's Pokémon know Facade, which doubles in power if the user is Burned, Poisoned, or Paralysis, though the Attack penalty incurred by sustaining a Burn still applies. While Ghost Pokémon are usually unaffected by Normal-type attacks, and vice-versa, half of Norman's team can use Faint Attack to deal serious damage to such Pokémon.
Before you reach Route 119, Steven will come and talk to you, but he doesn't say anything important.
(To the east is 123, but access to this route is limited for now.)

Route 119 and Weather Institute
Route 119
Now that you have reached Route 119, go north through the Tall grass, which hides a number of Trainers.
Afterwards, your father awards you the Balance, which boosts your Pokémon's Defense by 10% and enables the use of Surf in the field. He also hands you 42 as a gift. Just then, Wally's father bursts in, claiming that he's got something to give you. He leads you next door to his home, where he apologizes for his hasty behavior. He tells you that living in Verdanturf has done wonders for Wally's health, and he gives you 03 as thanks for helping the young Trainer. In battle, Surf is a strong Water attack; in the field, it allows you to cross bodies of water.

Route 118
The seaside 118 links the west and east sides of the region together. Several new species of Pokémon can be found here, including Electric types that will be of great value in the upcoming Gym.

Surf's Up!
When you're ready to cross the river, approach the beach and use Surf. Hop on your seafaring Pokémon's back to glide across the water. While Surfing, it is impossible to use the field moves Cut, Strength, or Rock Smash; however, Fly Waterfall Dive are allowed. The Itemfinder can't be used while crossing the waves, but you can use an Escape Rope or a fishing rod while doing so.

Get Good with a Good Rod
The Fisherman on the river's eastern bank believes that Good Rods are really good. Agree with his statement to receive your very own III, a mid-level fishing rod that can catch even more kinds of Pokémon than the III.

Gabby and Ty
After your first interview on the south side of 111, the intrepid news team can be found searching for their next story on the eastern bank of 118's river. Accept their challenge to another Double Battle and be sure to give them a great interview when the dust settles!

Meet up with Steven
As you leave the beach, you are noticed by Steven. He hasn't seen you since your first meeting in Granite Cave, and is pleased to see how much you have grown as a Trainer. He wonders if you will raise Pokémon of all types, or only a certain one.

Route 119
Known for its sweltering heat and sudden rainfalls, the spacious 119 runs north from 118 to Fortree City. The area is filled with patches of tall grass, which hide Trainer and wild Pokémon alike. The extreme weather conditions make this an ideal setting for the Weather Institute, located on the north end of this tropical rainforest.

Head north, past the house. Here, you will find a bridge: cross it and continue north. You will soon encounter a large building with Team Aqua Grunts all around it. This is called the Weather Institute. Because Team Aqua is blocking the path ahead, you'll have to go inside and defeat them in order to move forward. What do they want from this science organization?

The Mimic Circle
A handful of Trainers in the southernmost patch of long grass like to copy the movements of any Trainer passing by, collectively earning them the "Mimic Circle" nickname. They move when you do, so outmaneuver them to pin them down and start battling. Each one remains in a certain area, which gives you a chance to corner them.

Rest Stop
A small cabin stands beyond the patch of long grass. Speak to the kind woman inside, and she'll let you and your Pokémon take a quick break to restore their health.

Weather Institute
Weather Institute
Inside the Institute, you'll find even more Grunts. As you defeat them, you will learn their plans: they want to steal information about the legendary Pokémon Groudon and Kyogre, and the rare Pokémon Castform.
Located on the north end of the route, the Weather Institute is a high-tech facility used to study and research the intricacies of weather patterns across Hoenn. This research seems to have attracted the attention of Team Aqua, as several Grunts have been stationed outside.

After defeating the grunts on the first floor, advance to the second floor, where you'll find Aqua Admin Shelly.
Rest and Restore Health
Visit the back room to find some Team Aqua Grunts searching the place. Before battling them, head to the northwest room to find a comfy bed and rest your Pokémon before continuing on. There is also a PC here in case you should need to reorganize your team.

Looking for Answers
|{{Party/Single
When you reach the second floor, you find the source of the disturbance: Aqua Admin Shelly is harassing the researchers! She is here looking for information about extreme weather conditions, and to steal one of the Institute's Castform, a rare species of Pokémon. She can't allow you to meddle in the team's plans, and draws you into battle.

When you defeat Shelly, Team Aqua will leave the Weather Institute. The professor of the Institute will be very pleased that you saved him and will reward you with a Level 25 Castform.
The Next Step
The Admin simply shrugs off her defeat, claiming that the team has other plans before she and the Grunts leave the building. As thanks for your help, one of the researchers even rewards you with a new Pokémon, Castform, which changes its type and appearance based on the current weather.

Castform is unique because it changes its type and appearance depending on the weather conditions during a Pokémon battle. If there is harsh sunlight, Castform becomes a Fire; if it's Hailing, it becomes an Ice; and if it's Raining, it becomes a Water.

After your rival has been defeated, he/she will give you 02, a useful HM move that allows you to instantly travel to any town or city you've already visited. Your next stop is Fortree City, where you'll obtain another Badge.
Once you defeat her/him, your friend rewards you with 02. It's a strong move in battle and even more useful when used in the field, though you'll need to win the Gym Badge from the next city first. She/He then runs off, leaving you to continue on to Fortree City.

Fortree City
When you arrive in Fortree City, the first thing you'll probably notice is that the city is made entirely out of treehouses! The next thing you'll quickly discover is that the path to the Fortree Gym is blocked by something invisible. So you'll have to go on towards 120.

But first, there are some valuable items that you can obtain from the locals. In the middle wooden house above the gym a women will give you 10, if you can guess which hand she's holding it in three times in a row (solution: right, right, left). Her husband living in the same house will teach you 35 A boy in another house will trade you a Plusle in exchange for a Volbeat; the Plusle, named Pluses, will be holding a Mail.

Route 120 (briefly)
East of Fortree City, after following the path for a while, you will encounter Steven Stone once again. He found another strangely invisible blockade (just as you did). However, Steven uses the Devon Scope on it and suddenly, a Kecleon appears! After fighting it, Steven will give you the Devon Scope.

Now, go back to the Gym, use the Scope, and a Kecleon will appear. This time, however, instead of attacking, it will flee. Now the path has been cleared and you're free to challenge the Gym.
Just as your neighbor climbs the hill to Fortree, Scott is headed south away from it. He congratulates you on winning your latest match, and expects great things from you at the Fortree Gym.

Fortree Gym
Be aware that the highest-leveled Pokémon you'll battle here is Level 33 and quite powerful. If you're ready, enter the Gym.

Fortree City's Gym involves a puzzle wherein you'll have to push rotating doors in order to proceed. At the end of the Gym, you will find the Gym Leader, Winona. She uses Flyings, so it's a good idea to use Ice-, Rock-, and/or Electric Pokémon. (It's unlikely that you'll have any Ices at this point, although you may have a Pokémon that knows Ice Beam.) Grass-, Bug-, and Fighting-types are at a type disadvantage here, and Flying-types are completely immune to Ground moves.

All of Winona's Pokémon know the move Aerial Ace, which never misses. The first Pokémon you'll face in this battle is Swablu. It's a -type Pokémon, so it has the standard Flying weaknesses— Electric, Ice, and Rock. It shouldn't give you a problem... but it does know Perish Song, a move that will cause any Pokémon that hears the song to faint three turns later, unless it gets switched out. Pelipper has a 4× weakness to Electric-type moves, and one hit with Spark or Shock Wave will usually take it out in one hit. Be mindful that it has Protect to block attacks and Supersonic, which will confuse your Pokémon. Tropius is a real threat, with good defensive stats and powerful moves. It can restore up to half of its maximum HP with Synthesis, and has the devastating Grass move SolarBeam. It will not need to charge up in sunny weather, a weather condition that Tropius can activate with Sunny Day! However, this boosts the power of Fire moves, something that Tropius is weak to. Skarmory has exceptionally high Defense and is weak to Electric- and Fire-type moves. It knows Fury Attack, which strikes several times in a row, Steel Wing, which will deal supereffective damage to Rock-type Pokémon, and Sand-Attack to lower your Accuracy. The extra boost that Fire-type moves will get if the effects of Tropius's Sunny Day still linger may just be what you need to take out Skarmory. When Winona sends out Altaria, do not use Electric-type Pokémon against it. This -type knows the extremely powerful Ground move Earthquake. It can boost its Attack and Speed stats with Dragon Dance, and DragonBreath may cause paralysis. Altaria is weak to Rock-, Ice, and Dragon-type moves. Your best bet is to just keep attacking until you knock it out.

After being defeated, Winona will give you the Feather, which makes Pokémon up to level 70 obey and allows you to use 02 outside of battle. She will also give you 40.

Now, head to 120 again after healing up at the Pokémon Center.

With the Go-Goggles, you can finally venture into the windswept desert on Route 111. The powerful sandstorm deters most would-be explorers, so no one has yet claimed the valuable treasures lying among the dunes.

Mirage Tower is an elusive building located just inside the desert's southern entrance. The tower disappears and reappears as would-be explorers visit and leave the route. The ancient structure shows its age, with unstable floors and fallen rock scattered about. Progressing past these obstacles requires using the Mach Bike and Rock Smash.

The Root Fossil becomes the Rock/Grass Lileep, while the Claw Fossil turns into the Rock/Bug Anorith. Choose carefully! After removing either one, the tower begins to shake, and you fall from the building, landing just outside the entrance. The tower disappears down into the dunes, and the remaining Fossil falls away into the shifting sands.

Once in Rustboro, be sure to stop by Devon Corporation on the way to have the researchers there revive your Fossil Pokémon.

Petalburg Gym

Petalburg City Pokémon Gym
Leader: Norman

A man in pursuit of power!

The Petalburg Gym, which specializes in Normal-type Pokémon, is styled as a traditional dojo with multiple rooms.

Slaking usually leads with Yawn; if you switch out your Pokémon to keep it from falling asleep, your next Pokémon will be safe from attack. This is due to Slaking's Ability, Truant, which prevents it from attacking every other turn. All four of Norman's Pokémon know Facade, which doubles in power if the user is Burned, Poisoned, or Paralyzed, though the Attack penalty incurred by sustaining a Burn still applies. While Ghost Pokémon are usually unaffected by Normal-type attacks, and vice-versa, half of Norman's team can use Faint Attack to deal serious damage to such Pokémon.

The Balance Badge

Afterwards, your father awards you the Balance Badge, which boosts your Pokémon's Defense by 10% and enables the use of Surf in the field. He also hands you TM42 (Facade) as a gift. Just then, Wally's father bursts in, claiming that he's got something to give you. He leads you next door to his home, where he apologizes for his hasty behavior. He tells you that living in Verdanturf has done wonders for Wally's health, and he gives you HM03 (Surf) as thanks for helping the young Trainer. In battle, Surf is a strong Water-type attack; in the field, it allows you to cross bodies of water.

Route 118

Route 118

The seaside Route 118 links the west and east sides of the region together. Several new species of Pokémon can be found here, including Electric types that will be of great value in the upcoming Gym.

Surf's Up!

When you're ready to cross the river, approach the beach and use Surf. Hop on your seafaring Pokémon's back to glide across the water. While Surfing, it is impossible to use the field moves Cut, Strength, or Rock Smash; however, several other moves are allowed. The Itemfinder can't be used while crossing the waves, but you can use an Escape Rope or a fishing rod while doing so.

Get Good with a Good Rod

The Fisherman on the river's eastern bank believes that Good Rods are really good. Agree with his statement to receive your very own Good Rod, a mid-level fishing rod that can catch even more kinds of Pokémon than the Old Rod.

Gabby and Ty

After your first interview on the south side of Route 111, the intrepid news team can be found searching for their next story on the eastern bank of Route 118's river.

Route 119

Route 119

Known for its sweltering heat and sudden rainfalls, the spacious Route 119 runs north from Route 118 to Fortree City. The area is filled with patches of tall grass, which hide Trainer and wild Pokémon alike. The extreme weather conditions make this an ideal setting for the Weather Institute, located on the north end of this tropical rainforest.

Located on the north end of the route, the Weather Institute is a high-tech facility used to study and research the intricacies of weather patterns across Hoenn. This research seems to have attracted the attention of Team Aqua, as several Grunts have been stationed outside.

Rest and Restore Health

Visit the back room to find some Team Aqua Grunts searching the place. Before battling them, head to the northwest room to find a comfy bed and rest your Pokémon before continuing on. There is also a PC here in case you should need to reorganize your team.

Looking for Answers

When you reach the second floor, you find the source of the disturbance: Aqua Admin Shelly is harassing the researchers! She is here looking for information about extreme weather conditions, and to steal one of the Institute's Castform, a rare species of Pokémon. She can't allow you to meddle in the team's plans, and draws you into battle.

VS Shelly

The Next Step

The Admin simply shrugs off her defeat, claiming that the team has other plans before she and the Grunts leave the building. As thanks for your help, one of the researchers even rewards you with a new Pokémon, Castform, which changes its type and appearance based on the current weather.

Rival Battle 4

Leave the building and cross the upper bridge. May/Brendan catches up to you when you reach the nearest stairway. Your friend wants to see how much stronger you've become, and wastes no time challenging you to a battle!

Treecko Player chose Treecko

Torchic Player chose Torchic

Mudkip Player chose Mudkip

Once you defeat her/him, your friend rewards you with HM02 (Fly). It's a strong move in battle and even more useful when used in the field, though you'll need to win the Gym Badge from the next city first. She/He then runs off, leaving you to continue on to Fortree City.

Just as your neighbor climbs the hill to Fortree, Scott is headed south away from it. He congratulates you on winning your latest match, and expects great things from you at the Fortree Gym.
