This is part of a Walkthrough that covers the journey through the Hoenn Region in Emerald.

Devon Co. and Rusturf Tunnel

After receiving your Stone Badge and walking out of the gym, you will see another Aqua Grunt, this time coming out of Devon Co. He will run off to Rusturf Tunnel, and you will need to battle him. Right outside, an old man will ask you to go save his Peeko. Once inside, you find out that Peeko is a Wingull, and that the grunt was holding it hostage. The grunt will get infuriated and attack. When you beat him, the old man (whose name is Mr. Briney) will thank you gratefully, and offer his services as a reward. You will also get the Devon Goods.

The man you saved earlier in the Petalburg Woods will bring you to Devon Co.'s president, where he will ask two favors of you. He will ask you to bring a Letter to Steven in Dewford Town and the Devon Goods to Captain Stern in Slateport City. You will also receive your PokéNav.

When you go back outside, your rival is waiting for you, for a second battle. This time, (s)he will also have a Lotad, and his/her starter will be more powerful. When you win, (s)he will tell you a little abut Mr. Briney, that he's a sailor.

Mr. Briney's House, Dewford Town

Go back to the empty house on the southern part of Route 104, and you will see that it's not empty. Mr. Briney will be there. Talk to him, and he'll offer to take you to Dewford to deliver your letter. It takes about twenty seconds to get there. When you do, you will find several things. First, a boy outside of a small house will let you set the current "Trendy Phrase," which affects the location of Feebas, but that's not until later. There will also be a Pokémon Center, a few more houses, and a gym. If you walk to the west (left), you can see a Fisherman. He will give you the Old Rod. If you want to, there are several new Pokémon you can now find. More to the left is Granite Cave. For now, you can stay on the top floor with several Pokémon to battle. A hiker will also give you HM05, Flash.

To navigate yourself through the lower part of the cave you need to use Flash. However, you cannot until you beat Brawly. He can be found in Dewford Gym on the southernmost part of the island. There are also some Trainers that you will need to battle, and a big obstacle: the room is dark. However, the more Trainers you defeat, the lighter the room gets, making it easier to find Brawly.

When you get to him, he will have these Pokémon:

A good strategy for beating Brawly would be some of the following Pokemon:

041Zubat: can be found in the Granite Cave. Template:Type2 moves will do only 25% of the damage they would normally do. Once Zubat learns Wing Attack, it will provide you with a move that provides 200% damage (super effective) on all his Pokémon.

276Taillow: is rare on Route 104 and the Petalburg Woods. It too can learn Wing Attack.

292Shedinja: can only be obtained in a special way. If you have caught a Nincada, and evolve it when it hits level 20. However, this will only get it to a Ninjask, the regular evolution of Nincada. If Nincada evolves when you have an extra slot in your team and a spare Poké Ball, you will also get Shedinja. Despite the hardships, it's worth it. Shedinja's Wonder Guard Ability protects it from anything other than "Super Effective" moves, protecting it from all of Brawly's Pokémon.
