Your rival takes you to Lake Verity

The journey begins at your home in Twinleaf Town. You are watching the television when a news broadcast declares a team searching for a red Gyarados in a far-off lake (presumably the Lake of Rage in Johto) has not observed the Pokémon in question. You leave your house and are told that your rival wishes to see you. As you are about to enter the house, your rival bumps into you (literally). After speaking, he runs back inside. Enter, and go upstairs. Your rival will be deciding what to take. Speak to him, and he will rush down and wait for you.

Lake Verity

You and your rival set off for Lake Verity. When you arrive there, you see Professor Rowan (though this is unkown at the time) and either Lucas or Dawn, corresponding to the opposite gender of your character. The two are discussing the return of Rowan to Sinnoh after 4 years. They push past, Lucas / Dawn apologising. Your rival remarks that the man is intimidating, after heading to search the lake. However, when he and you enter the long grass, you are each attacked by a wild Starly. You open the breifcase and find three Poké Balls, containing Piplup (Pochamma), Chimchar (Hikozaru) and Turtwig (Naetoru). Choose one, and your rival will choose the Pokémon with a type advantage over yours. Suddenly, the Professor's Lucas / Dawn returns and remarks that Rowan would be very angry if he forgot that briefcase. She/he then asks if the two of you have used a Pokémon from the briefcase. After replying, she/he hurries off.

Return to Twinleaf Town

On the way back to Twinleaf Town, you meet Lucas / Dawn along with Professor Rowan, who then takes a look at your and your rival's Pokémon and returns back to the lab with her/him. After that, return to Twinleaf Town. Your mom gives you a pair of Running Shoes and asks you to visit Professor Rowan in Sandgem Town after taking a rest.

Route 201

You go through Route 201 after your rival has reached Sandgem Town. We recommend training your starter to a decent level of about 7-9 before going along to Sandgem Town. The two Pokémon available on Route 201 are Starly and Bidoof. As of then, you are unable to capture Pokémon.

The professor give you the Pokémon

On reaching Sandgem Town, your rival will take you to Professor Rowan, who gives you and your rival's chosen Pokémon as gifts. After that, it is recommended that you heal your Pokémon at the Pokémon Center. Then, visit the largest building in town. As you are about to enter, your rival zooms out and says that the man isn't as intimidating as he first seemed, then departs for Jubilife City. Enter the lab, and Professor Rowan will give you a Pokédex and tell you to collect as many Pokémon as possible. Lucas / Dawn also says that he/she is on a Pokédex quest. Then it's time for you to depart for Twinleaf Town. You will be given five Poké Balls a bit onwards, so be wary before buying some.
