31 is a small route that connects 30 to the south and Violet City to the west. The western entrance to Dark Cave is located here, but the area cannot be fully explored just yet.

After the Team Rocket business is over, you can challenge the Azalea Gym! Bugsy, the gym leader, specializes in Bug Pokémon. Bugsy's title is "The Walking Bug Pokémon Encyclopedia".

After defeating Bugsy you receive the  Hive well as TM49 Fury Cutter! You will also be allowed to use the HM move Cut outside of battle.  When you leave the gym heal your Pokémon and then go to the Ilex Forest. Make sure you have a Pokémon able to learn the move Cut as well. You will receive the HM in the forest and you will need Cut to get through.

Once the battle is over go on in to Ilex Forest. Talk to the guy you see standing against the trees and he will tell you his boss's Farfetch'd got away. Go deeper into the forest and you will see the said Farfetch'd. If you go up to him and press A, he will say "Kwaa!" and run off. Two people own and operate the Pokémon Day Care Center, an old man and an old woman.  Talk to either one of them and they will raise your Pokémon. It costs 100PDollar per level there. If you take your Pokémon before they gain a level you will pay 100PDollar to get them out. In addition to raising level, you can also breed your Pokémon here to get Pokémon eggs. If you go in the pin where your Pokémon are at the daycare and talk to one of them, you will read one of three different messages depending on how compatible the two Pokémon are.
*If it says, "Its friendly with ---" you will get a Pokémon Egg quickly.

*If it says, "It shows interest in ---" then you won't get an egg as quickly.
Defeated, Falkner awards you the Zephyr, which gives your team a slight Attack increase and allows the use of Flash in the field. He also gives you 31, a move that inflicts damage while lowering accuracy.

*If it says, "It has no interest in ---" you will not get a Pokémon Egg. Those two Pokémon are not compatible.  Another message is also seen if you try to breed Pokémon related to each other. (Brother and Sister, Mother and Son, etc.) This message reads, "Its brimming with energy." You will not get an egg if you see this message. The female Pokémon passes on the species so keep that in mind as you are breeding.
Elm and the Egg
Professor Elm calls when you step outside, asking that you visit his assistant in the Pokémon Center. The assistant delivers the Mystery Egg to you, as it must be near an active team of Pokémon to grow and hatch. Call the professor when it finally hatches, and he asks to see it; after inspecting Togepi, he gives you an Everstone as thanks.

When you first arrive at the Pokémon Day Care Center, the old man will give you an Odd Egg. This egg will hatch in to one of the following baby Pokémon: Smoochum, Elekid, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Pichu, Magby, Tyrogue, or Togepi. This baby Pokémon will has a higher chance of being shiny than normal Pokémon, and will hatch with the move Dizzy Punch.
With the Violet Gym defeated, head south to 32.

Route 30

On the second visit to Route 30, the Pokémon battle that had blocked the western road has ended, clearing the path northward.

Route 31

Route 31

Route 31 is a small route that connects Route 30 to the south and Violet City to the west. The western entrance to Dark Cave is located here, but the area cannot be fully explored just yet.

Violet City

Violet City

Violet City is the first city with a Pokémon Gym. Other major attractions include Sprout Tower in the north, and Earl's Pokémon Academy in the east.

Time for a Trade

The kid in the house near the Pokémon Center is looking for a Bellsprout. If you have one to spare, it's a good idea to trade it to him. Rocky, the Onix you get in return, can make the Gym battle here much easier.

Earl's Pokémon Academy

The Academy is where young prospective Trainers learn how to raise Pokémon. On the blackboard are descriptions of the several status problems that can affect a Pokémon.

Ailment Effect(s)
BRN Burn Attack drops to 50%; inflicts damage equal to 1/8 of maximum HP every turn
FRZ Freeze Cannot move until thawed (20% chance of recovery per turn)
PAR Paralysis Speed drops to 25%; cannot attack 1/4 of the time
PSN Poison Inflicts damage equal to 1/8 of maximum HP every turn; loses 1 HP for every four steps taken outside of battle
SLP Sleep Cannot move for one to seven turns

Sprout Tower

The Sprout Tower is a towering pagoda run by Buddhist monks. Since these monks also train Pokémon, this is a good opportunity to train before challenging the Violet Gym. Rattata roam the tower during daylight hours, and Gastly can be found at night. After battling past the others, you find your rival having just defeated the head monk. He talks to you briefly before using an Escape Rope. After defeating the elder monk, Sage Li, he rewards you with HM05 (Flash).

The Elegant Master
of Flying Pokémon

The Violet Gym specializes in Flying-type Pokémon. Clip their wings with Electric attacks, or knock them out of the sky with Rock moves. Grass and Bug Pokémon, beware; Gust is now classified as a Flying-type attack, inflicting double the normal damage. The Onix you just received will be helpful, but watch out for Mud-Slap, a Ground-type move.

Violet Gym
The Zephyr Badge

Defeated, Falkner awards you the Zephyr Badge, which gives your team a slight Attack increase and allows the use of Flash in the field. He also gives you TM31 (Mud-Slap), a move that inflicts damage while lowering accuracy.

Elm and the Egg

Professor Elm calls when you step outside, asking that you visit his assistant in the Pokémon Center. The assistant delivers the Mystery Egg to you, as it must be near an active team of Pokémon to grow and hatch. Call the professor when it finally hatches, and he asks to see it; after inspecting the newly-hatched Pokémon, he gives you an Everstone as thanks.

With the Violet Gym defeated, head south to Route 32.
