Starting Out

If you have already played a Pokémon game previously, you can skip this section.

After you select "NEW GAME" on the startup screen you are confronted with a pale blue screen and a simple question: "Are you a boy? Or are you a girl?" After you choose, the screen turns black and someone is just waking up. They ask you the time, then you see that its Professor Oak! He talks about the world of Pokémon for awhile and after that he asks you your name. If you chose to play as a boy your choices are:

  • NEW NAME
  • CHRIS
  • MAT
  • ALLAN
  • JON
Choosing a name.

If you chose to play as a girl your choices are:

  • NEW NAME
  • KRIS
  • AMANDA
  • JUANA
  • JODI

After you choose your name, you will appear in your bedroom.

Your bedroom.

You start the game in your bedroom.

The PC in the top-left corner of your room and can be used to store items. If you want to store an item, choose Deposit Item and select an item. If you want to retrieve an item, choose Withdraw Item and then select an item. Finally, if you want to get rid of an item permanently use Toss Item and select the item to remove. There is also a mailbox function on your PC to store mail as well as a "Decoration" option. Right now if you select "Decoration" all that will come up is BED and POSTER. If you choose to let your mom save money for you (which will be an option later in the game) she will buy things for your room, which will be stored here. Lastly, the TURN OFF option will shut down your PC.

After you are done with the PC, go downstairs and speak to your mom. She will walk up to you when you go downstairs. She tells you Professor Elm has something he wants you to do for him. Before you go, mom gives you your PokéGear. She then asks you what the day of the week is and if it is Daylight Savings. She asks if you know how to use the phone on your PokéGear, if you don't say no.

Walk out of your house and to left is Professor Elm's laboratory.

Professor Elm's Lab

Once you get to his lab, Professor Elm tells you he is doing some new Pokémon research right now and he needs your help. He wants you to raise a Pokémon he recently caught. Answer Yes to his question and he will thank you. Before you get a Pokémon, Elm receives an email from a Mr. Pokémon. He wants you to go and see what it is the Mr. Pokémon wanted him to check out since he is too busy to go himself. Choose from these three Pokémon:

155MS.pngCyndaquil - Fire -type

Cyndaquil is the strongest of the three starter Pokémon. It has advantages against Gym 2, 6, and 7. Cyndaquil is the easiest to use in the game and its final form is is extremely powerful!

152MS.pngChikorita - Grass-type

Chikorita is the most difficult Pokémon to raise in the game because of its multitude of weaknesses in the gyms. It is weak to the first two gyms and the seventh gym. It has no real advantages in the gyms either, making it a choice for an experienced player. If you choose Chikorita be prepared to build a supportive team around it.

158MS.pngTotodile - Water-type

Totodile is in the middle between Cyndaquil and Chikorita. It has some minor advantages in the gyms and no major weaknesses in the gyms. Totodile is a pretty average Pokémon so if you like Water types, its still a good choice.

After you pick, Professor Elm will explain how to get to Mr. Pokémon's house. He will also give you his number just in case.

To Mr. Pokémon's House

Leave Professor Elm's house (After receiving a potion from his assistant) and go left to Route 29. I suggest you battle wild Pokémon along the way to build up experience for your first gym battle, which will be soon after your go to Mr. Pokémon's House for Professor Elm. Once you get to Cherrygrove City heal your Pokémon. The old man at the entrance to the city will show you around the town and give you a map for your PokéGear. After leaving Cherrygrove go north all the way up to Mr. Pokémon's. He gives you a Mystery Egg when you get there! Professor Oak is also there and gives you a Pokédex to use on your journey. When you leave Mr. Pokémon's house Professor Elm calls you and is apparently in danger. Go to Professor Elm's lab right away!

Red-Haired Kid?

As you are leaving Cherrygrove, a red haired kid bumps in to you and he wants to battle! I hope you healed your Pokemon. His name shows up as ??? and later you will be asked to "name" him. Win or lose, he takes off when the battle is over.

If the player chose Chikorita: If the player chose Cyndaquil: If the player chose Totodile:

Once you get back to Elm's you'll notice another Poké Ball is gone from the table and a police officer is there. He discovers you ran in to the red haired kid and asks you for his name.
