If you have already played a Pokémon game previously, you can skip this section.
After selecting New Game, you are asked to select your character's gender. Crystal is notable for being the first of the main series handheld games to offer the ability to play as a female Trainer. After you make your selection, you are then asked to enter the time. Before long, Professor Oak appears, and introduces you to the world of Pokémon. He then asks you to choose a name, or enter a new one. After that, you wake up in your bedroom.

After you select "NEW GAME" on the startup screen you are confronted with a pale blue screen and a simple question: "Are you a boy? Or are you a girl?" After you choose, the screen turns black and someone is just waking up. They ask you the time, then you see that its Professor Oak! He talks about the world of Pokémon for awhile and after that he asks you your name. If you chose to play as a boy your choices are:

The PC
The PC sitting on the desk can be used to store extra items, since your pack only has a limited capacity. To store an item, choose Deposit Item and select an item. To retrieve an item, choose Withdraw Item and then select an item. Finally, to get rid of an item permanently, use Toss Item and select the item to throw away. There is also a Mailbox function on your PC to store mail, as well as a Decoration option. Lastly, the Turn Off option will shut down your PC (like with other menus, this can also be achieved by pressing the B Button).

After you choose your name, you will appear in your bedroom.
Mom
Go downstairs and talk to Mom. She tells you that Professor Elm has something to ask you. Before you leave, she returns your Pokégear. This handy device is something that a Trainer should never be without, featuring clock, map, phone, and radio functions later on. She helps you activate your Pokégear's clock function, asking about the day of the week and Daylight Savings Time.

Your House
To get out of your house, there is a mat at the door. Simply walk right through it and - welcome to New Bark Town!

You start the game in your bedroom.

The PC in the top-left corner of your room and can be used to store items. If you want to store an item, choose Deposit Item and select an item. If you want to retrieve an item, choose Withdraw Item and then select an item. Finally, if you want to get rid of an item permanently use Toss Item and select the item to remove. There is also a mailbox function on your PC to store mail as well as a "Decoration" option. Right now if you select "Decoration" all that will come up is BED and POSTER. If you choose to let your mom save money for you (which will be an option later in the game) she will buy things for your room, which will be stored here. Lastly, the TURN OFF option will shut down your PC.
New Bark Town is a rather boring, quaint town, having only four buildings. The house to the east is yours, the house to the south belongs to Professor Elm, the house to the southwest is home to another resident, and the big building to the north is Professor Elm's lab. Ignore the Silver that kicks you out of his way, and enter the lab.

After you are done with the PC, go downstairs and speak to your mom. She will walk up to you when you go downstairs. She tells you Professor Elm has something he wants you to do for him. Before you go, mom gives you your PokéGear. She then asks you what the day of the week is and if it is Daylight Savings. She asks if you know how to use the phone on your PokéGear, if you don't say no.
Professor Elm's Lab
Professor Elm is busy with his studies, so he asks you to visit an old colleague of his. Mr. Pokémon's house is located on 30, north of Cherrygrove City, and he has an intriguing discovery for the professor. Elm offers you one of his three newly discovered Pokémon from his desk to accompany you. The one you pick will be holding a Berry (Generation II).

Walk out of your house and to left is Professor Elm's laboratory.

Professor Elm's Lab
Once you get to his lab, Professor Elm tells you he is doing some new Pokémon research right now and he needs your help. He wants you to raise a Pokémon he recently caught. Answer Yes to his question and he will thank you. Before you get a Pokémon, Elm receives an email from a Mr. Pokémon. He wants you to go and see what it is the Mr. Pokémon wanted him to check out since he is too busy to go himself. Choose from these three Pokémon:
* Like Bulbasaur, the Grass Chikorita is strong against Rock-, Ground-, and Water Pokémon, and is weak against Fire-, Bug-, Poison-, and Flying Pokémon. It learns Razor Leaf at level 8, but doesn't learn any other damage-dealing Grass-type moves until much higher levels. Being a Grass-type, it will also have the toughest time against the first Gym.

Cyndaquil - Fire -type
* Charmander's successor, the Fire Cyndaquil is strong against Grass-, Bug-, and Ice Pokémon but has trouble when battling Water-, Ground-, and Rock Pokémon. It learns Ember at level 12, but its Fire moves are on the weaker side, so it will be difficult to use starting out.

Cyndaquil is the strongest of the three starter Pokémon. It has advantages against Gym 2, 6, and 7. Cyndaquil is the easiest to use in the game and its final form is is extremely powerful!
* Johto's version of Squirtle, the Water Totodile is great against Fire-, Rock-, and Ground Pokémon, but struggles against Grass- and Electric Pokémon. It learns a bunch of strong attacks, though only a few are Water moves. Totodile is probably the best starter to pick, though Water types are more common in Johto than Grass or Fire types.

Chikorita - Grass-type
Once you've got your new Pokémon, head west to 29. Elm gives you his phone number on your way out, and as you leave, his assistant gives you a Potion. If you need to heal your team, you can return to Elm's lab and use his PC.

Chikorita is the most difficult Pokémon to raise in the game because of its multitude of weaknesses in the gyms. It is weak to the first two gyms and the seventh gym. It has no real advantages in the gyms either, making it a choice for an experienced player. If you choose Chikorita be prepared to build a supportive team around it.
Route 29
Totodile - Water-type
The winding 29 leads you right to Cherrygrove City. The route forces westbound travelers to walk through patches of tall grass, but without Poké Balls, you can't catch anything yet!

Totodile is in the middle between Cyndaquil and Chikorita. It has some minor advantages in the gyms and no major weaknesses in the gyms. Totodile is a pretty average Pokémon so if you like Water types, its still a good choice.

After you pick, Professor Elm will explain how to get to Mr. Pokémon's house. He will also give you his number just in case.

To Mr. Pokémon's House
Pick a Berry
On the northwest hill is a Berry (Generation II) tree. One of Generation II's new additions is a variety of Berries that can do anything from recovering health to eliminating status problems. This type of Berry will recover 10 HP when used, whether it is used by the player or a Pokémon. When a Pokémon holds a natural item like a Berry, it may decide to use it during battle. Pokémon won't interact with man-made items like Potion, since they don't know what they are. Berries grow back, so return the next day to find another one.

Leave Professor Elm's house (After receiving a potion from his assistant) and go left to Route 29. I suggest you battle wild Pokémon along the way to build up experience for your first gym battle, which will be soon after your go to Mr. Pokémon's House for Professor Elm. Once you get to Cherrygrove City heal your Pokémon. The old man at the entrance to the city will show you around the town and give you a map for your PokéGear. After leaving Cherrygrove go north all the way up to Mr. Pokémon's.  He gives you a Mystery Egg when you get there! Professor Oak is also there and gives you a Pokédex to use on your journey. When you leave Mr. Pokémon's house Professor Elm calls you and is apparently in danger. Go to Professor Elm's lab right away!
The Week Siblings
The Week Siblings are seven siblings that visit various areas around the region, and give out different power-up items for a Pokémon to hold. They will begin appearing after you defeat the first Gym. Each sibling only gives out their respective power-up once. Tuscany appears in the center of the route every Tuesday, and hands out the Type-enhancing item. When held, it powers-up a Pokémon's Normal moves.

Red-Haired Kid?
As you are leaving Cherrygrove, a red haired kid bumps in to you and he wants to battle! I hope you healed your Pokemon. His name shows up as ??? and later you will be asked to "name" him. If you picked Chikorita,  he has a Cyndaquil. If you picked Cyndaquil, he uses Totodile. If you picked Totodile he picked Chikorita. Win or lose, he takes off when the battle is over.

Once you get back to Elm's you'll notice another Poké Ball is gone from the table and a police officer is there. He discovers you ran in to the red haired kid and asks you for his name.
