Agatha appears in the anime in The Scheme Team, acting as a temporary Gym Leader for the Viridian Gym. Her Japanese voice actress is Kazuko Sugiyama and her English voice actress is Allyson Johnson. Internationally, she is played by Gilmara Sanches in Brazilian Portuguese.

While Ash was going through Viridian City on the way to Pallet Town, he met up with Scott. Wanting to show Scott how strong he was, Ash challenged Agatha to a gym battle. Despite just placing in the top eight of the Ever Grande Conference, Ash lost to her Gengar.

Although he lost, both Agatha and Scott were impressed. It was then Agatha revealed to Ash that she is a member of the Elite Four. She and Scott both recommended that Ash go to the Battle Frontier and challenge the Frontier Brains.

Agatha is a member of the Elite Four, and the oldest one to date. As such, she serves as an inspiration for senior Pokémon trainers all around the region. She uses Ghost-type Pokémon, and other Pokémon with horrifying appearances.

Agatha and Professor Oak were once friendly rivals in their youth, and it appears that Agatha may have once had a crush on Oak. However, their relationship has grown bitter and strained over the years because Agatha believes he was too weak to continue competing.

She has a very short temper.

By the events of the Generation II games, Agatha is no longer a member of the Elite Four, and Bruno has assumed her position. Her absence was never explained; in fact, she is not mentioned at all. It is fan speculation that in the three-year gap between games, she either finally retired due to old age or passed away.

Quotes

"I am Agatha of the Elite Four. I hear Oak's taken a lot of interest in you, child (You're the child that Oak's taken under his wing, aren't you?). That old duff was once tough and handsome. But that was decades ago. He's a shadow of his former self. Now he just wants to fiddle with his Pokédex. He's wrong. Pokémon are for battling! <name>! I'll show you how a real Trainer battles!"

"Oh, my! You're something special, child!"

"You win! I see what the old duff sees in you now. I've nothing else to say. Run along now, child!"

In the Pokémon Special manga

Agatha was the main villainess in the Pokémon Yellow Pokémon Special manga. Agatha was one of the Elite Four who tried to destroy most of humanity from their base on Cerise Island.

She fought against Green and Koga, and seemingly vanished after her defeat.

Agatha used the mind-controlling powers of her Ghost-type Pokémon to control Bruno against his will.
