Ability
Pokémon in the Generation III games were given abilities, amongst other new concepts. Abilities serve to give Pokémon a trait that would assist them in battle such as Rough Skin on Sharpedo which allows the foe to take damage on direct contact.
Interestingly enough, abilities are very similar to Pokémon Powers from the Trading Card Game.

Generation IV
These are the abilities of Generation IV. All Abilities from Generation III remain, except for Cacophony that has been removed and Air Lock has been moved from #77 to #76. Names are literal translations from Japanese, may change for the American and European versions.
