At the End of the Fray (Japanese: 最後の激闘！優勝への道!! Conclusion of the Fierce Fighting! The Road to Championship!!) is episode 131 of Advanced Generation. It was first broadcast in Japan on June 16, 2005 and in the United States on March 25, 2006.
Ash's battle with Tyson is under way, but with both of their first Pokémon down, can Ash manage to pull out a victory over Tyson?
Synopsis
The majestic forces of Ice Beam and SolarBeam collide with a vengeance creating an array of light and color. As the dust clears, Glalie and Sceptile are both announced as unable to battle. With both Ash's and Tyson's Pokémon being simultaneously eliminated, the stage is set for an amazing battle.
Meanwhile, Team Rocket is presented with a ran down shack as the employer they are working for directs them to remodel the establishment. Jessie walks over to the weak structure and it collapses before her eyes. Wobbuffet is quick to give his seal of approval. James notices that Meowth is missing.
On the battlefield, Shiftry and Torkoal battle it out. Torkoal continues launching Flamethrower as Shiftry evades every last of of Torkoal's attacks. Shiftry responds with a Shadow Ball attack which collides with it's target for a direct hit. Torkoal is blasted backwards but recovers from the attack. Torkoal goes for another Flamethrower attack but as Shiftry evades this second round of attacks, Torkoal ascends into the air still firing the flamethrower and hits Shiftry for heavy damage. After the dust clears, Shiftry is announced as unable to battle.
Tyson decides to choose Hariyama for his third Pokémon choice. Torkoal begins with another Flamethrower attack as Hariyama blasts forward with an Arm Thrust reflecting and evading the Flamethrower attack. May and Max are surprised that the Flamethrower attack doesn't even damage Hariyama as Brock goes to explain that Hariyama is covered with a special fat that helps to defend against fire and ice attacks. When Hariyama is within range, he strikes down with a Brick Break knocking Torkoal unconscious and unable to battle.
Ash selects Corphish for his third Pokémon selection. Hariyama goes for another Brick Break attack slamming into the ground while Corphish manages to evade the attack. Corphish and Hariyama blast forward with their Crabhammer and Focus Punch. As the two forces clash, an explosion takes place knocking Corphish and Hariyama backwards. After the smoke clears, Corphish is announced as unable to battle leaving Ash with only three additional Pokémon.
The first half of the battle concludes as Meowth waits patiently for Tyson to release his Meowth. Morrison lectures Ash telling him that he can't lose to anyone else in the tournament since Ash managed to defeat him. Ash agrees with Morrison's statement and asks Pikachu if he would like to assist him in the second half of the grueling battle. Pikachu approves with the simple gesture.
Meanwhile, Team Rocket has happened to come upon the room which holds all the participant's Poké Balls. James also adds that since these are tournament Pokémon, that they must be extraordinarily powerful.
The second half of our battle to begin with the battlefield now changing to Rock terrain. Ash calls upon Swellow for his fourth Pokémon selection as Tyson selects his Hariyama. Swellow thrusts forward with a Peck attack but just as Swellow comes within range, Hariyama grasps onto Swellow making it immobile. Hariyama rotates into the air and slams Swellow down in a Seismic Toss. After a few moments, Swellow recovers and continues on the attack. Hariyama charges for a Focus Punch while Swellow counterattacks with an Aerial Ace. While Hariyama launches its Focus Punch, Swellow briefly goes out of sight and strikes Hariyama in the rear knocking it unconscious and unable to battle.
Tyson chooses Donphan for his fourth Pokémon. Donphan doesn't hesitate and begins with a Sandstorm attack. Swellow manages to clear the Sandstorm as Donphan goes into a Rollout attack and propels itself off of a nearby boulder hitting Swellow for heavy damage. Donphan goes into another Rollout attack hitting Swellow countless times and each time causing increasing damage. As Donphan moves for one last Rollout attack, Swellow manages to halt Donphan and make it immobile by using both of its legs. Swellow then grasps onto Donphan and launches it towards the ground. Donphan crashes into the ground and is announced as unable to battle. Swellow seals an impressive victory leaving Tyson with only two more available Pokémon.
A solitary Poké Ball rotates from Tyson's hand, as Metagross is called upon by Tyson. Metagross begins the battle with a Psychic attack causing Swellow to be immobile. Swellow manages to break free of the Psychic attack and blasts forward with a devastating Quick Attack. As the two forces clash, Swellow is thrust backwards taking the full damage from its own attack. Metagross continues with a Hyper Beam knocking Swellow unconscious and unable to battle.
Ash doesn't hesitate in this competition and chooses Grovyle for his fifth Pokémon. Grovyle is eager to battle as it closes in on Metagross and begins with a barrage of Bullet Seed. While Grovyle continues with its Bullet Seed attack, Metagross launches a Hyper Beam attack. Grovyle evades the attack and continues with its Bullet Seed attack. Grovyle launches forward for a Leaf Blade attack but Metagross manages to recover and counterattack with a Meteor Mash knocking Grovyle unconscious and unable to battle.
Ash selects his faithful companion Pikachu for his final attack. Pikachu blots forward with a Thunderbolt attack hitting directly but proving to take no effect on Metagross. Metagross retaliates with a Psychic attack but Pikachu manages to avoid the psychokinesis waves as it grasps onto Metagross's body and delivers an electrifying Thunder through Metagross's body knocking it unconscious and unable to battle. This magnificent victory leaves both Tyson and Ash with only one Pokémon selection.
Tyson calls upon his Meowth for the sixth selection. Team Rocket's Meowth calls out cheering for Tyson's Meowth. Meanwhile, Team Rocket is managing to collect the participant's Poké Balls, their employer smashes through the door with uncontrollable anger.
Pikachu launches another Thunderbolt attack as Meowth begins with its own Thunderbolt. The two combatants to continue with Thunderbolt attacks as the stadium fills with fray electrical energy. Ash decides to take the battle into close range with a Quick Attack. Meowth creates a state of confusion by creating duplicates of itself with Double Team. The two Pokémon clash with Iron Tail attacks as both Pokémon aren't giving much distance between each other. Meowth and Pikachu clash once more with Meowth's Slash and Pikachu's Quick Attack. Pikachu launches a devastating Thunder attack as Meowth once more defends against the attack with a Thunderbolt. Pikachu thrusts forward with its Iron Tail attack as Meowth counterattacks with its own Iron Tail. Both attacks hit directly as both sides take heavy damage. Both Pokémon struggle to continue the battle both panting for air. After a fierce standoff, Pikachu collapses to the ground and Tyson advances to the next round. Both trainers gather in the middle of the battlefield and exchange congratulations. Morrison managed to become emotionally attached to the battle as much as Ash.
Team Rocket are on the escape from the old man employer as Meowth shouts out. Jessie and James turn around with delight of sighting their faithful companion, Meowth. The employer finally catches up with Team Rocket and thrusts forward with a hard punch blasting Team Rocket off like a brilliant star.
The Hoenn championship finally concludes with Tyson announced as the Tournament Victor. May is surprised that Tyson actually managed to claim first place. Brock regains a sense of battle pride and grows interested in participating in battling once more.
Morrison is eager to inform Ash that at the next tournament, he will finally defeat Ash. The curtain finally closes on an amazing Hoenn League Championship. (Written by: bgt)

Errors
- Brock incorrectly refers to Metagross's Hyper Beam as Solarbeam in the dub.
- In the Italian dub, during the first 10 minutes of this episode all voices and all audio effects (except Italian voice actors' voices) are lower than the normal. This problem is later solved.
