Synopsis

As Ash and his friends are walking in the woods on their way to the ferry port in Lilycove City, Pikachu is exceptionally happy. However, Pikachu’s happiness doesn't last long when the ground starts shaking. A tree starts falling down and almost hits Pikachu. After the sand clouds clear a big machine appears and is holding Pikachu. Once again, it's a contraption belonging to Team Rocket It's a machine they call the Mean and Nasty, Grumpy Grabber Mark One. Ash orders Pikachu to do a Thunderbolt attack; however the attack doesn't even phase the machine because it's made of a bunch of insulated recyclables mixed in with a bunch of rubber hoses. Ash and friends charge at the machine; however, they fall into a pitfall dug by Team Rocket. It seems that Team Rocket is winning until their machine starts sinking into the soft sand. After a short time the machine itself starts crumbling and then explodes, causing everyone to fly in the air. Ash tries desperately to catch Pikachu; however, Pikachu is much lighter than Ash, and so flies through the air much faster.

In the next scene, it appears Ash had blacked out and is starting to come around when he asks if everyone is alright. Everyone else starts coming around as well and says that they're okay as well. At least they think they are. Max asks what happened and May thinks that Team Rocket's machine blew up. Then Ash remembers what happened and starts frantically calling for Pikachu. Ash tries to make a run for it; however, he's stuck in a tree! Jessie and James are also affected by the blast. Not only are they pasted to a tree themselves but they lost Meowth. Jessie thinks they should go back to base, but James thinks otherwise, since Meowth might be lost. When we see Pikachu he's lying in the grass unconscious. Pikachu sits up looking dazed and confused. He also happens to be sitting on top of Meowth's head. Meowth panics when he sees Pikachu, realizing that he might get zapped by him, but Pikachu doesn't shock Meowth. Meowth brings out his claws to attack Pikachu, but Pikachu doesn't do anything except stand there. Soon, Meowth realizes that Pikachu must have amnesia. So Meowth plots to convince Pikachu that he belongs to Team Rocket and has been since the day he was born and how much he's been through. Pikachu believes Meowth!

As we rejoin Ash and friends, Ash orders Swellow to go look for Pikachu as Brock orders Mudkip to look as well. Jessie and James are also lost in the woods. James calls out for Meowth and Jessie calls out for home base. James reminds Jessie that bases can't talk. Going back to Meowth and Pikachu, they are strolling happily through the woods looking for the Team Rocket base. Meowth remembers all the traps and pitfalls they got into trying to catch Pikachu, but as of today that's all in the past. Then, a Zigzagoon appears out of the bushes along with a Beedrill. Pikachu does a Thunderbolt attack on the Beedrill and it flies away. Meowth thinks about how kind Pikachu is and wonders who'd be mean enough to capture it and then remembers he's the bad guy so he would. Then Pikachu and Meowth continue their search for the base.

Jessie and James are then seen walking along the water still looking for base themselves. Jessie is still calling out to the base and James tells her the base can't talk.

Next Pikachu and Meowth are walking on a narrow ledge. Pikachu has no problem but Meowth is afraid. Meowth goes back to thinking Pikachu's kind and brave and only a complete jerk would capture and that's Meowth. Meowth then tells Pikachu a lie on how he once saved Pikachu's life when it was burning up with fever and Meowth was nursing him back to health. Then Meowth steps on a weak part of the ledge and falls through. Pikachu grabs Meowth by the tail and tries to pull him back up.

Ash and friends are still looking and calling for Pikachu. Then Mudkip gets a vibration of something to the right. They see the footprints from the same place as the earlier Beedrill attack. They recognize it to be the tracks of Pikachu, Meowth, and a Zigzagoon.

Meowth is seen sitting on the edge of a pond, looking down at his reflection and thinking that the explosion must have knocked them half way across the country and nowhere near home base. Pikachu comes with an apple and is willing to give it to Meowth because Pikachu knew Meowth was hungry. Meowth learns that this was the only apple and Pikachu wouldn't have had any, so he decided to split it with Pikachu.

Going back to Ash and friends, we see them walking along the narrow ledge that Meowth and Pikachu crossed moments before. Mudkip happens to notice more tracks, and Brock mentions that Pikachu doesn't seem to be putting up any type of struggle. Ash agrees with him.

Swellow passes over head while Pikachu and Meowth are walking up a steep bank. Meowth is still feeling guilty on how it would be wrong to deprive Pikachu of his freedom. Pikachu then loses his balance and falls down the hill but Meowth catches him. Then they start walking up the hill again.

Jessie and James then finally reach home base, and Jessie is thrilled. James also agrees that it might not be pretty, but it's what they call home. Jessie goes right on in and says it's time to eat and they'll wait for Meowth to turn up. James asks if it would be better to go looking for Meowth, but Jessie says to put it in park and wait because she's tired and hungry. But then Swellow comes in and sees Team Rocket's base and goes back to tell Ash. Meowth and Pikachu also arrive at home base. Meowth goes up and starts yelling for Jessie and James to come out. Pikachu gets ready to give them a jolt but it's only because he thought they'd hurt his friend Meowth. Meowth quickly tells them about Pikachu and so they will act like his friends too.

Mudkip is still looking for Pikachu and gets another vibration in the right direction. Swellow is also seen coming back from that direction too so they go over there and discover the base.

Jessie and James are trying to convince Pikachu that they are his buddies, and Pikachu falls for it. But then Ash comes and sees what is happening. Ash tells Pikachu how worried he was about him and asks Pikachu if he remembers him. Pikachu decides to go to Team Rocket rather than Ash, which shocks Ash to the core. Then Team Rocket perform the motto, this time with Pikachu participating at the end along with Meowth, and the gang can't believe that Pikachu would actually join the villainous trio. Ash continues trying to convince Pikachu that he is Pikachu's friend. James commands Pikachu to give Ash a Thunderbolt attack which sends him flying. Meowth commands Pikachu to do it again. Brock finally comes to the conclusion that Pikachu has amnesia. Then Team Rocket runs into their base, it explodes, and they come out with their balloon. Ash grabs onto the basket trying to get his best buddy back. James orders Pikachu to do a Thunderbolt but it shocks everyone. Ash and Pikachu start falling and Ash grabs on to him but they fall into a rushing river. They are then shown going down the river with several flashbacks playing.

Ash has since washed up on shore unconscious. Pikachu examines Ash and licks him on the face. Ash then starts coming around then and he sees Pikachu and notices Pikachu remembers him. Ash picks up Pikachu and hugs him. Ash starts tearing up, but Pikachu wipes Ash's tears away. Brock, May, and Max finally catch up to Ash and Pikachu. Team Rocket falls from the sky and lands in the water and asks the twerps to help them out because they can't swim. They all tell Team Rocket to help themselves. Ash commands Pikachu to give them a Thunderbolt which zaps them into the air and sends them blasting off again.

Brock says how great it is to have anyone back again, and May comments that it's times like those that make you appreciate your friends. Then Ash closes by saying that they’d be friends forever.
