Steven Stone (Japanese: ツワブキ・ダイゴ Daigo Tsuwabuki) is a skilled Trainer who specializes in Steel-type Pokémon. He is the Champion of the Hoenn region's Pokémon League in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire, as well as the canonical Hoenn League Champion in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
A collector of rare stones, Steven is the son of the president of the Devon Corporation, and makes his home in Mossdeep City. In the Hoenn-based games, he wanders the region, aiding the player on their journey. In Pokémon Emerald, he is no longer the Champion, with Wallace taking his place.
In the core series
In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire, Steven appears as the Champion of the Hoenn region. His strategy in battle is to use Steel-type Pokémon to find the weaknesses of his opponents, with his Metagross being the cornerstone of his team.
In Pokémon Emerald, Steven is a powerful, wandering Trainer who gave up competing seriously to spend more time looking for rare rocks and stones, which he claims he would climb waterfalls to find. Fittingly, the player can find and challenge him in the upper area of Meteor Falls after they defeat the new Champion, Wallace. This battle cannot have a rematch.
In Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, after the player enters the Hall of Fame, Steven will leave a Beldum and a note for the player at his house in Mossdeep City. In the remakes of these games, he leaves one for the player after the Delta Episode is fully completed.
In Pokémon Platinum, the person who gives the player their villa in the Resort Area mentions that the man who gave him the villa came to Sinnoh to collect rare stones. After collecting the stones, he left the region with all the items in the villa. This mysterious previous owner may in fact be Steven.
Steven also appears in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, introducing himself as the Hoenn Champion. The player first meets him when they leave the Pokémon Fan Club in Vermilion City after collecting Copycat's Lost Item, where he will appear and inform them that there have been reports of either a LatiosSS or LatiasHG roaming Kanto. The player meets him a second time after defeating Red on Mt. Silver, where he will appear in the Silph Co. building in Saffron City and let the player choose one of three colored stones: the Green Stone, the Red Stone or the Blue Stone. Depending on which color is picked, he will give the player one of the three Hoenn starter Pokémon. He can later be found in the Pewter Museum of Science, examining a shelf. After visiting and speaking to him there, he will return to the Silph Co. building and offer to trade a Beldum for a Forretress.
If the player has the Enigma Stone and enters the Pewter Museum of Science, an event will occur in which Steven will be talking to one of the museum's researchers. When he is spoken to, he will notice the Enigma Stone and have the researcher examine it. The researcher will extract the Soul Dew from the stone and give it to the player. Steven will tell the player that Soul Dew is said to be the solidified spirits of Latias and Latios, and that it can bring out their true potential. Upon walking outside, LatiasSS or LatiosHG will be waiting to battle in Pewter City, drawn to the player by the Soul Dew.
In Pokémon Black and White, a tourist who visits Undella Town in the summer mentions Steven, explaining that he is a very powerful Pokémon Trainer who collects stones. In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, Steven appears alongside the other Champions from the first five generations as an opponent in the Champions Tournament at the Pokémon World Tournament.

History
Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire
In Stairway to Devon, Steven was first mentioned by his father, who claimed he would be a good person for Ash and his friends to know. In Which Wurmple's Which?, Nurse Joy informed Max that Steven was in nearby Granite Cave, so the group began their search for him.
He then debuted in A Hole Lotta Trouble. Unlike his game counterpart, Steven was not mentioned to be or have been the Hoenn League Champion, but was simply a powerful Trainer. Instead, Wallace was said to be the Champion later in Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl. Steven and his Aron were digging in Granite Cave, looking for rare stones. As Ash, his friends, and Team Rocket fell down a hole, Steven ended his excavation and quickly checked out what caused the crash to occur. Steven first found Max, Pikachu, and Meowth wondering around the cave.
Having been in Granite Cave for several months, Steven escorted Max and the others to a crack in the cave floor. Soon enough they spotted Ash and the others, who were being chased by a horde of agitated Aron. He ordered them to rush over to the nearby waterfall. At the meeting spot, Steven had his own Aron use Roar to calm the agitated horde. He then told the horde that the group were good people and ordered the back to their roosts. After both sides were reunited with each other, Steven found out that Team Rocket were the ones who caused the Aron to get angry. Steven handled Team Rocket on his own by having his Aggron blast them off with a Hyper Beam. Afterwards, Steven found a Fire Stone with the help of Aron. He decided to lead the group out of Granite Cave and took them to a deserted inlet, an ideal place for Ash to train for his rematch with Brawly. Having found a rare stone, Steven boarded his small boat to continue his search for other stones and wished the group luck for the future.
Pokémon the Series: XY
Mega Evolution Specials
Steven reappeared in Mega Evolution Special II, where he battled Alain using his Shiny Mega Metagross, but the battle was interrupted by Lysandre. Deciding to cooperate with Alain and company, Steven traveled to their destination, a small temple with two pillars in the center. When Alain and Steven held their Key Stones to the monument, a staircase of light appeared to lead them further within the ancient ruin. There, they discovered a similar mechanism that summoned a glowing Giant Rock from underneath the ruin. After Lysandre and his research team began analyzing the giant stone, a Rayquaza appeared from the sky, Mega Evolved into Mega Rayquaza, and started wreaking havoc on the surrounding area. Alain, Steven, and their Mega Pokémon partners tried to fend off the Legendary Pokémon, but were overwhelmed.
In this series, Steven was confirmed to be the current Champion of the Hoenn League, indicating that Wallace no longer holds the title. In Mega Evolution Special III, Steven brought Alain and Mairin to the Devon Corporation headquarters to analyze the situation of the missing Giant Rock. There, they received a conference call from Lysandre, who informed them that both Groudon and Kyogre have undergone Primal Reversion and were set to collide in the middle of the ocean. Steven recalled the Primal Reversion myth, and feared that the two Pokémon clashing again could have catastrophic consequences. As a result, he and Alain departed on a plane to check on the situation from the sky, with Mairin secretly stowing away with them.
In Mega Evolution Special IV, he, Mairin, and Chespie returned to Kalos. They contacted Professor Sycamore regarding Alain as he separated from them. Later, they arrived at Lysandre Labs with Lysandre and his secretary waiting for them. While Lysandre's secretary escorted Mairin to watch Alain battle ten Trainers, Steven and Lysandre discussed the Giant Rock. Lysandre showed Steven the Giant Rock in another room and explained that it is kept in a high-security tank to prevent energy from leaking out, as well as bringing up the fact that the super-ancient Pokémon fought in Hoenn previously. Steven was then seen watching the battle between Alain and Malva. After the battle, Steven arrived to where Chespie was lying on a bed, unconscious from absorbing too much energy from an experiment.
Main series
Steven reappeared in the main series in a flashback in Rivals: Today and Tomorrow!, where he met Sawyer. He also appeared in another flashback in Coming Apart at the Dreams!.
From The Right Hero for the Right Job! to Forming a More Perfect Union!, Steven joined the battle against Team Flare. He eventually battled alongside Ash, Alain, Diantha, and all of Kalos's Gym Leaders during the joint effort to stop the Giant Rock.
It was revealed in The First Day of the Rest of Your Life! that Steven gave Sawyer a Key Stone. Later, in Till We Compete Again!, Steven and Sawyer were shown at Lysandre Labs, studying the Giant Rock that was recently held there. He proceeded to give Sawyer some information, which Sawyer promptly wrote down in his notebook.
Pokémon Journeys: The Series
Steven appeared in a fantasy in JN105, when Ash mentioned him to Wallace.
In JN109, Steven was revealed to be in the Master Class of the World Coronation Series, being ranked third. Steven appeared in a fantasy in JN114, when Goh mentioned him to Paul.
Steven reappeared in JN115, where he took part in the Masters Tournament. His first opponent was revealed to be Ash.
Character
Similar to his game counterpart, Steven is reserved and interested in collecting stones. During Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire, he did care for the Aron in the Granite Cave and attempted to stop a herd of them from chasing Ash, his friends, and Team Rocket. He battled Team Rocket after discovering that they were the ones who made the Aron horde angry.
During Pokémon the Series: XY, he became more open to Trainers, such as Alain and Mairin. He is seen as a sort of mentor figure by Sawyer, whom Steven gave a Key Stone and Sceptilite. His usual calm, and a bit playful demeanor is constantly reflected throughout the series, such as during his battles against Alain and Mable; nevertheless, he can be serious when the situation demands. In a particular instance, he was not greatly disappointed or enraged after learning Lysandre's true intentions, displaying his happy-go-lucky personality.
Being the gentle and playful person as he is, he was not worried when he and his Metagross were outnumbered by Mable and Team Flare Grunts during their battle, also reflecting his strong bond and great confidence in his Pokémon. He tends to appreciate others for their efforts, and has a great sense of honor for fellow Champions, as displayed during his interactions with Diantha.

Ruby & Sapphire arc
Steven is the Hoenn League Champion, having taken the position from Wallace, who turned down the title despite winning the previous Pokémon League tournament.
Steven debuted in Blowing Past Nosepass II. There, he spoke to Captain Stern about the status of the creation of the Submarine Explorer 1. In Guile from Mawile, Steven rescued Ruby from a hoard of rampaging Mawile in Granite Cave. Once they escaped, Steven considered recruiting Ruby to help him combat Team Magma and Team Aqua, but decided against it due to Ruby's young age. Steven said his farewells to Ruby and headed off.
In The Beginning of the End with Kyogre & Groudon XII, Steven arrived at the Lilycove Department Store and found Wallace battling Tabitha, who had gone berserk from touching the Blue Orb. Steven revealed that after the Submarine Explorer 1 was stolen, he went to other regions and recruited the Hoenn Elite Four as allies against Groudon and Kyogre. Steven passed his title of Hoenn League Champion to Wallace and sent the Elite Four to three locations where the Legendary Pokémon Registeel, Regirock, and Regice were sealed. With a blind boy's help, Steven attempted to decipher an stone slab containing the secret to awaken the sleeping Pokémon. The slab was too damaged to properly translate, forcing the plan to be abandoned.
In A Royal Rumble with Regirock, Regice and Registeel I, Steven found Sootopolis City surrounded by a massive explosion of energy. Amidst the chaos, Steven found and rescued Sapphire, who handed him a letter she received from his father, Mr. Stone. The letter contained a decoding for the missing part of the slab, allowing Steven to finish the translation. With assistance from Sapphire's Lorry and Relly, Steven successfully awaken Registeel, Regirock, and Regice. Steven and Sapphire were then separated by another explosion. Steven, Wallace, and the Elite Four separated into three teams of two and used Registeel, Regirock, and Regice to contain the energy generated from Groudon and Kyogre's clash contained and prevent it from spreading throughout Hoenn. Their efforts lasted for several weeks until It All Ends Now IV, when Ruby and Norman ended Groudon and Kyogre's battle with Rayquaza's power, returning the super-ancient Pokémon to their slumber. Controlling three Legendary Pokémon for so long left Steven so exhausted that he collapsed and died soon after. With Steven's passing, Registeel, Regirock, and Regice returned to the wild.
In It All Ends Now VIII, Steven and those who lost their lives in the fight against Groudon and Kyogre were revived by Ruby's Celebi's time travel powers. With Team Magma and Team Aqua defeated, Steven celebrated the victory with his allies and thanked Ruby and Sapphire for their assistance in the battle.
Platinum arc
In Leaping Past Lopunny, Steven was revealed to have spent time collecting stones in the Sinnoh region. After obtaining the stones he wanted, Steven sold the Villa he had built to use as a home base. The Villa was bought by Platinum shortly afterward.
Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc
In the thirteenth chapter, it was discovered that Grand Meteor Delta, a giant meteoroid, would crash into Hoenn and destroy the planet. To prevent this disaster, Steven enlisted the help of Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. In Omega Alpha Adventure 0 , Steven had Ultima train the Hoenn Pokédex holders Mumu, Chic, and Sceptile in mastering the ultimate moves so they would be prepared to use Mega Evolution. Despite Ruby being elsewhere on other business, Mr. Stone had everyone move onto the next phase once the training had finished.
In Omega Alpha Adventure 5, Steven, Sapphire, and Emerald arrived on the Sea Mauville. The former energy plant contained a machine called an Absorber capable of fueling a dimensional shifter designed to deal with Grand Meteor Delta. That night, Emerald was attacked by a mischievous Hoopa. Steven assisted Emerald in battling the Mythical Pokémon, revealing he was capable of using Mega Evolution as well. Hoopa eventually escaped before Steven and Emerald could defeat or identify it.
In Omega Alpha Adventure 7, Steven and Mr. Stone used the Absorber to drain Emerald's Sceptile and Sapphire's Chic of their life energy while in their Mega-Evolved states. Once the process was finished, the Sea Mauville was raided by by Zinnia, a Draconid with a hatred for the Devon Corporation. Zinnia and her allies made of former Team Magma and Aqua members attempted to destroy the dimensional shifter, forcing Steven, Sapphire, and Emerald to defend it. By the time Ruby returned, everyone realized that Sapphire and the shifter had disappeared due to Hoopa's interference. With the shifter gone, Zinnia attempted to steal Steven's Key Stone but was convinced to leave when Ruby offered up his and Emerald's Mega Bracelets in exchange.
In Omega Alpha Adventure 10, Steven and Mr. Stone stayed behind while Ruby and the others went ahead to find an alternate solution to the meteoroid impact. They received a call from the Mossdeep Space Center stating that Sapphire successfully delivered the shifter. While Professor Cozmo and his assistants outfitted the shifter onto a rocket, Steven and his father traveled to Mossdeep City to deal with the public, who had learned of the upcoming disaster due to a news leak. In Omega Alpha Adventure 12, Steven and Mr. Stone arrived at Mossdeep. Sapphire told Steven that she sensed Zinnia's presence and went off to prevent her from interfering with the rocket's launch. Sapphire and Zinnia's clash led to them battling on top of the rocket as it flew through the air. Eventually, Sapphire was defeated, allowing Zinnia to destroy the dimensional shifter and knock the rocket down into the ocean.
In Omega Alpha Adventure 19, Steven and Mr. Stone arrived at Sootopolis, where Zinnia was taken to after she failed to get Rayquaza to join her. Mr. Stone apologized for trying to control Rayquaza years ago, only for Zinnia to reject it, claiming he was only trying to save face for his failures. When Zinnia gave up and stated it was impossible to stop disaster, Emerald suggested the differing factions worked together to save the planet. Together, everyone gathered allies from across Hoenn, Kanto, and Johto to assist in stopping Grand Meteor Delta. While the plan was being set up, Steven gave Zinnia a jar of Key Stones that were collected at the Embedded Tower. When Zinnia assumed the stones Steven and Hoenn Pokédex holders used were stolen from the late Aster, Steven explained he received those from the Mega Evolution guru in the Kalos region.
In Omega Alpha Adventure 21, the plan to destroy Grand Meteor Delta went underway. Ruby and Sapphire rode on Mega Rayquaza into space, where they attacked the meteoroid with Dragon Ascent. Back on Earth, Steven and the three allied regions launched a simultaneous attack on Grand Meteor Delta, successfully shattering it into pieces. With the crisis averted, Steven and the others watched as Ruby and Sapphire flew back to Sootopolis with Rayquaza.
Once everything had returned to normal, Steven was revealed to be taking Diancie back to its home in Kalos.

Trivia
- In Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, as well as their remakes, Steven states that his favorite Pokémon is Beldum and that his favorite move is Steel Wing. Consequently, he leaves Beldum in his house as a gift for the player, and gives the player the TM for Steel Wing in Granite Cave.
- In Emerald, when the player speaks to Steven in Meteor Falls before their battle, he mistakenly refers to battling alongside the player in the Sootopolis Space Center. The Space Center is actually in Mossdeep City.
- The battle with Steven against Maxie and Tabitha is the only occasion in the Generation III games where the player teams up with an ally for a Double Battle.
- Steven's Trainer ID number is 61226 in Pokémon Emerald, 23478 in HeartGold and SoulSilver, and 11214 in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
- Steven shares his French name (Pierre) with Brock, the Gym Leader of Pewter City. In the French dub of A Hole Lotta Trouble, he keeps his English name of Steven Stone so as to not be confused with Brock, who was traveling with Ash when the group met Steven.
- However, from Rivals: Today and Tomorrow! onward, he is referred to as Pierre Rochard.
- In games where both Steven and Brock appear, Steven is referred to as "P. Rochard" (HeartGold and SoulSilver) and "Rochard" (Black 2 and White 2).
- Despite being a Steel-type specialist, all of Steven's teams feature just as many or more Rock-type Pokémon.
- In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Steven mentions to Wallace that he will relinquish his position as Champion sometime in order to travel the world, and asks Wallace if he will become Champion in his place, referencing their roles in Emerald.
- In the rematch with Steven in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, all of his Pokémon have at least one immunity.
- In Emerald, Brendan and May share their battle theme with Steven.
- If the player has Steven's Shiny Beldum, Steven makes a reference to Alain, his Mega Charizard X, and the events of Mega Evolution Special II during the Delta Episode in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.
