Maylene (Japanese: スモモ Sumomo) is the Gym Leader of Veilstone City's Gym, known officially as the Veilstone Gym. She hands out the Cobble Badge to Trainers who defeat her. She specializes in Template:Type2 Pokémon.

In the games

Maylene uses Template:Type2 Pokémon in her battles. Trainers who defeat her receive the Cobble Badge, TM60 (Drain Punch) and are able to use Fly outside of battle. Maylene is considered a cute little girl, but adults in the town respect her for her power. Maylene's father gambles at the Veilstone Game Corner. Maylene apparently doesn't know her own strength, as she's totally unsure of how she got to be Gym Leader, and seems rather confused by the whole thing.

Later in Platinum, the player encounters her upon entering Route 217 where she is apparently training by walking to Snowpoint City. She doesn't use Fly—even if she could—so she could train herself. She is also used to the cold, even if she is lightly dressed and barefoot. In Snowpoint's Pokémon Center, she says that she admires Candice for being so studious and that she'll see her later. Later in the game, she can appear at the Battleground, where she and the other Sinnoh Gym Leaders and Trainers can be battled again. After battling her here, she mentions that she believes that being barefoot is healthier than wearing footwear, pointing out that Pokémon go barefoot.

In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Maylene appears in Celadon City and has entered, as well as currently winning, what appears to be an eating contest.

  • Before battle
"Hello. I'm pleased to meet you. I'm Maylene, and I'm the Gym Leader. I don't really know what it means to be strong, or how I got to be the Gym Leader. But I will do the best I can as the Gym Leader. I take battling very seriously. Whenever you're ready!"
  • After sending out last Pokémon
"Oh! But this isn't the end, my friend!"
  • During battle
"I'm in a bit of a bind, aren't I?"
  • When defeated
"I shall admit defeat... You are much too strong."
  • After being defeated
"...OK. You win. That was a tough loss. I learned a lot from it. Please, accept this Gym Badge."
"Gee, I'm hungry... Oh, sorry, it's nothing. I didn't say anything. <name>, I can't explain what it means to be strong. I don't know how much effort goes into being strong... But being with Pokémon lets us keep making the effort, doesn't it?"

Route 217 (Platinum only)

"Oh, [player]! Um, are you maybe on your way to Snowpoint City? That's where I'm going, too. If I use Fly, I can get there instantly, but I'm walking for my training. I have no problem with this. I'm used to the cold because I go barefoot and lightly dressed. ...Achoo! Oh, that was nothing. Really, I'm not cold at all. I'll be going now. Please take care!"

Snowpoint City Pokémon Center (Platinum only)

"Brrr... Oh, hi, [player]! Are you taking the Gym challenge now? I'm hoping to see Candice soon, but I'm staying put until I warm up again first. Oh, you should know that Candice is a user of Ice-type Pokémon. I really admire Candice. She's so studious. She wanted to practice against me to learn about the Fighting type. It's because the Ice type matches up badly against the Fighting type."

"...Um, your Villa... Would it be OK if I took a look around?"
"[player], please hear how my training is going. Thanks to my training, I'm beginning to understand the feelings of Pokémon. It lets me choose moves with much more confidence!"
"[player], please hear how my training is going. Thanks to my training, my handwriting has improved tenfold! ...Yes. It has absolutely nothing to do with how strong I am as a Gym Leader."
"...You know those Accessories for Pokémon? Would it be funny if someone were to wear those?" (to Candice)
"...! Th-thank you so much!" (to Candice)
"What makes a Gym Leader a good one?" (to Candice)

In the anime

Maylene in the anime

Maylene made her first appearance in Lost Leader Strategy!.

After being defeated by Paul, Maylene had lost confidence in herself as a Gym Leader, a position she's only held for six months. When Ash challenged her, she declined, much to the annoyance of her Lucario.

Discovering Dawn has similar issues herself (following Dawn's Early Night and Team Shocker!'s contest defeats), Maylene agrees to have a gym battle with her in Crossing the Battle Line!. She managed to defeat Dawn after a hard-fought battle.

She was challenged by Ash next in A Triple Fighting Chance!, an even harder-fought battle which resulted in a tie. With the decision now hers, Maylene considered Ash to have battled well enough that she awarded him the Cobble Badge.

Maylene also appeared in Enter Galactic!.

Pokémon Special

Maylene is seen training with her two Pokémon. She almost gets hit by Pearl's Monferno's Ember (when the trio was testing Berlitz's newly-earned Zoom Lens) while she was jogging around the city. She challenges Berlitz to a match, adding that Berlitz must use Monferno against her. Later, following the events of Pokémon Platinum, she met again with Berlitz when she was traveling alone before the battle with Candice in Snowpoint City.

Maylene owns these Pokémon:

Pokémon DP

Maylene has a brief cameo in chapter 7 in volume 2, later in the volume she is seen complaining about only appearing in one panel.

  • Maylene is the only Sinnoh Gym Leader in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl to not appear outside her gym at least once in the game. She makes several appearances outside of her Gym in Pokémon Platinum, however, when the player reaches Route 217, at the Pokémon Center in Snowpoint City before beating Candice, and at the Battleground.
  • Maylene's Japanese name is shared with that of one of the Kimono Girls of Ecruteak City.
  • Maylene is one of the youngest Gym Leaders in Sinnoh. However, the youngest Gym Leaders in the Pokémon world seem to hail from Hoenn, being the twins from Mossdeep City, Tate and Liza.
  • With the release of Pokémon Platinum, the order of three Gym battles in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl are now shifted: instead of being third, Maylene is now fourth in the line-up. Had Ash fought Fantina previous to Maylene, he would have inadvertently gone out of order compared to the Diamond and Pearl line-up, but in order for the Platinum line-up. Ash battled the three shifted Gym Leaders in the order designated by Diamond and Pearl, as Platinum was not released until after Ash fought Crasher Wake, but before Fantina.
  • She is also the only Gym Leader in Sinnoh to have more Pokémon of the opposite gender than of the same gender as her; in the Veilstone Gym, two out of her three Pokémon are male, while at the Battleground, three out of five are.
  • Maylene is the only Sinnoh Gym leader as of yet to have not lost to Ash at least once.
  • To date, she is the only female Gym Leader that specializes in Fighting-type Pokémon.
  • Of all of the trainers that can be fought at the Battleground, Maylene has the strongest Pokémon of any of them. Her Lucario at, Lv. 66, is one level stronger than the rest of the trainers' strongest Pokémon, as all of the rest are at Lv. 65.
