Coalossal (Japanese: セキタンザン Sekitanzan) is a dual-type Rock/Fire Pokémon introduced in Generation VIII.

It evolves from Carkol starting at level 34. It is the final form of Rolycoly.

Coalossal can Gigantamax into Gigantamax Coalossal if it has the Gigantamax Factor.

Biology

Coalossal is a Pokémon which resembles a massive goliath with a body of coal. It has a large, coal-black body, with two legs and a pair of stubby arms, alongside two massive spikes atop its shoulders. It bears a head consisting of a pair of white eyes that can glow red and a mouth with serrated teeth. It carries a large amount of heated coal on its back.

Despite its large and tough look, Coalossal has a peaceful disposition. However, it becomes enraged if the coal mines it lives in are vandalized, incinerating those who invade its territory with flames as hot as 2,700 degrees Fahrenheit (1,500 degrees Celsius). In battle, the coal on its head will burn bright red and radiate heat that sends sparks flying, scorching its surroundings. Coalossal intimidates its opponents by shaking its body and loosing coal from its back.

Forms

Coalossal has a Gigantamax form.

As Gigantamax Coalossal, it becomes considerably larger, and the mountain of coal expands, with three red clouds surrounding its summit. Its physique is largely similar to its original form, but the spikes on its shoulders have split into two each, and its front now features three open spots, which expose intense heat radiating from its body, and it resembles a stove oven. Its fire can burn even hotter than 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit (2,000 degrees Celsius), and its shoulders' temperature is over 2,000 Kelvin.[1] Gigantamax Coalossal once served as a massive heat stove when Galar was struck by a harsh cold wave, saving many people in doing so.

Coalossal is the only known Pokémon capable of learning the move Tar Shot. Additionally, Coalossal and its pre-evolved forms are the only known Pokémon that can have Steam Engine as an Ability.

Gigantamax Coalossal is the only known Pokémon capable of using the G-Max Move G-Max Volcalith.

Trivia

Origin

Coalossal appears to be a mix of a dinosaur or kaiju and a pile of coal. Alternatively, its Japanese name suggests that it is a personification of coal mines. Coalossal's Gigantamax form may be based on a firebox, a furnace, or oven. The ornament forming its upper jaw could be the pilot of a locomotive train, or the eye guard of medieval helmets. Its skin gets smoother as it evolves, which may represent the process of metamorphism. Its Shiny variant's gray coloration may reference how coal turns white with ash as it burns.

Name origin

Coalossal may be a combination of coal and colossal.

Sekitanzan may be a combination of 石炭 sekitan (coal) and 炭山 tanzan (mountain coal mine).
