The relevant part is this: "ニャースは日本の猫のことわざから来てます。頭に小判が乗っているのにそれが何なのか分っていない、つまりお金 の価値の事を説いたものです。". I would say he's actually saying that the cat doesn't have a clue of the coin's value (to humans), not that it doesn't know it's there. He seems to actually be referring here to the Japanese equivalent of "casting pearls before swine", {{wp|Koban (coin)#Cultural references|neko ni koban}} (AKA {{m|Pay Day}}) (because cats don't care that a koban/coin is worth anything to people). Even so, the shape of Meowth's paw still strongly suggests the influence of the Maneki-neko. STAB
Marking Bite as a STAB move in the RBY column and not in the others isn't a mistake. In RBY, Bite is a Normal-type move, while in the later versions it is a Dark-type move. User142 | Talk 07:03, 12 January 2006 (CST)
Melee
Can somebody tell me why Meowth is included in the Pokeball Pokemon bit? Pluvia 23:23, 27 August 2007 (UTC)
- The Poké Ball section is only two lines. Meowth is in the trophy section. I agree that the boundry isn't clear. --FabuVinny T-C-S 11:59, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
- Meowth is a Pokéball Pokemon in the other two, just saying that.... --Catu 20:51, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
Tyson's Meowth
Could anyone get a sprite for Tyson's Meowth in the boots to add to Tyson's profile? JmathTalk14:00, 9 October 2007 (UTC)
- I found it on this link here.[1]--Pokencyclopedia 15:22, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot!!! JmathTalk 15:26, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

- Well, I got to leave for like 2 hours. But when I get back, I promise I'll do it first thing! --Theryguy512 16:05, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
Okay, I'm back now. --Theryguy512 20:11, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

- WTF! All you did was paint a hat onto a picture of Meowth!!!!!! Mine is a real sprite! --Theryguy512 21:16, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
Yea seriously! I doesn't even have boots! I think we should use the real one that I uploaded.....--Theryguy512 21:23, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
- SO BESIDES THE FSKING BOOTS WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH IT. Tina δ♫ 21:24, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
- Well it looks good......at least it has boots.....no offense, though.....but it is called Meowth in Boots.....--Theryguy512 21:37, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
- Okay, this is my last post of this conversation. Your pic is a fake, fan-made pic. The one I got is from a website. Let's let Jmath decide. After all, he was the one who started this. ;-) --Theryguy512 21:54, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
- FOR THE LAST F*CKING TIME POKÉSHO IS NOT OFFICIAL. >:C IT'S FANMADE. IT'S NOT OFFICIAL. ON THE FRONT PAGE IT SAYS -- This page is a fanpage of Poke'mon. ARRGHHHHHH. Tina δ♫ 21:57, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
- Calm is key.......the website's looks a lot better......I'm not argueing anymore. --Theryguy512 21:59, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
- Here's my input on the issue: Both are fan made and if we are going to use one then TinaTheKirlia's sprite edit fits the look of the other sprites on Tyson's page much better. --FabuVinny T-C-S 22:02, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

- ...*headdesk* agh. you seriously got me boiled over there. my pot top blew off and shattered. (in other words, you got me damn pissed. e_e) Tina δ♫ 22:07, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
My decision is to not use either. -Sketchies 22:40, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
- I don't see the reason why we're even arguing this point. Are we screaming that we need to give Ashachu a Gen IV sprite and plop the doofus's hat on it? Charla a bow? If anything it'd be the minisprites to have for the infoboxes. TTEchidnaGSDS! 23:52, 5 January 2008 (UTC)
If the sprite that Theryguy uploaded could be enlarged, I think we could use it in the page. I just feel we need to add the sprite because Tyson's Meowth is different from the rest. The boots are like its trademark. JmathTalk 19:06, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
Trivia is a bit tenuous
The trivia item about the reversed numbers is a tad tenuous, and after much study I believe its a coincidence.
- Trivia is just funny facts. It's nothing that important to worry over. So what if it's a coincidence. It's a fact that Meowth and Pikachu's numbers are reversed. --'ケンジ'ガール 19:11, 11 January 2008 (UTC)
On a somewhat related topic. None of Meowth's sprites really show it as standing on all fours (like the trivia suggests). In fact, it could just be sitting down in the Red/Blue sprites. All other sprites, including the Japanese Red/Green show it on its hind legs. Perhaps this trivia bit should be removed... ~$aturn¥oshi THE VOICES 14:52, 30 July 2008 (UTC)
Nyarth vs Nyasuu
ok, I might be stupid somehow, but why is Meowth said to be called "Nyarth"? to me, clearly it's name is Nyasuu, that's the name we "grew up with", that's what romaji fying ニャース gets you, and heck, that's also what the bulbapedia says the katakana is too, so what gives? {{SUBST::User:ZaphodBeeblebrox/sig}} 21:02, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
- All the Japanese Pokémon names have official Romanizations. Sometimes it's exactly the same as the katakana, sometimes not. Nyāsu=Nyarth and Naetoru=Naetle, but Fushigidane=Fushigidane and Hitokage=Hitokage...et cetera.--Loveはドコ? (talk • contribs) 22:17, 15 June 2008 (UTC)
Nyrth
Isn't there a character on Thundercats called Nyrth? (I don't watch that show) User:ShinyPikachu
- That would be Snarf. ~$aturn¥oshi THE VOICES 15:11, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
- Sorry, Can I borrow ur sig.? ShinyPiKa 16:07, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
Anime Picture
Well, in the Anime section, I think that the picture shown doesn't display the proper coloring. It has a good facial expression, but not much else.... If I don't get any feedback in at least 2 days, I'm gonna change it. --Catu 20:54, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
- I don't think the image is so poor that it has to be replaced. If it's only a matter of coloring, I don't believe it's so far off from the official or game artwork that it's really a problem. Kevin Y (talk) 21:16, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
- Meh, it's just bothering me... We'll see if someone else has a say. --Catu 22:05, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
Meowth's name.
The article says it has to do with the anime. But, the anime is based off the games. Lovely Rose 04:47, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
Nocturnal?
Under behavior it says that it is not nocturnal, yet in his Pearl Pokédex entry it clearly states that it is nocturnal. Why would this be?--Smartkidhen 15:54, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
- There's got to be a contradiction somewhere. Also consider that Meowth only appears at night in Crystal. --Shiningpikablu252 16:24, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
Backsprite
For some reason, there are some pinkish-colored pixels on the normal gen IV backsprite. They aren't on the shiny one, just the normal one. I just want to know if they're supposed to be there. Reference:

Omnivore?
In the anime, Meowth once attempted to devour a Magikarp. Worth mentioning? AceTrainerChristy 15:10, 21 May 2011 (UTC)
- That would make it a carnovore, not an omnivore. XVuvuzela2010X 16:10, 21 May 2011 (UTC)
- I know. I called it an Omnivore because it also eats fruit, as previously stated. -AceTrainerChristy 21:53, 21 May 2011 (UTC)
Change pic?
Shouldn't you change its anime pic to a normal meowth which only walks on four legs as that is normal for a meowth, walking on two legs is only team rockets and tyson's and they both have their own page? - unsigned comment from Emeraldben (talk • contribs)
- If you can find a better qualty pic, then go ahead. XVuvuzela2010X 00:45, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
Name origin
I think that "Meowth" might just come from the Japanese version because "meow" is the cat sound. "Nyar" is, I believe the Japanese word for Meow. They both end in "th".
Hypnosis
Breeding male Stantler with hypnosis learned did not yield Meowth offspring with hypnosis in Silver. Can anyone else confirm/deny this on a Gen II game? JackHarper (talk) 18:42, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
Meowth's Japanese Name's Romanization!
As you can see from the link I've provided, http://www.filb.de/anime/pm/053, these are Japanese Screenshots, and look, they even Romanized ニャース as Meowth too. I could not find any evidence of a "Nyarth" anywhere, so can anyone tell me, where does "Nyarth" come from? --Vaati (talk) 15:40, 15 July 2013 (UTC)
- Nyarth is the name that is trademarked. Bulbapedia uses the names that the company trademarked as we feel it is the most accurate representation of the creator's intent. The most common way to find these names is on the Japanese merchandise (this one can be see here [[3]]). A lot of sites will translate (not romanize) to the English name, and a lot of free translators (like Google translate) will do the same. Crystal Talian 23:52, 15 July 2013 (UTC)
Art
Why cant we just use FRLG art, like with other Kanto Pokémon?Squirtleoshawott461 (talk) 13:15, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
- The infobox is programmed to use FRLG art every day of the year except certain significant anniversaries, which use RG artwork. Today is not one of the anniversaries (you can see them listed at the top of this talk page), so I'm not sure why it's displaying the RG artwork. In any case, wait until tomorrow and the odds are high it will return to FRLG. No big deal. Just be patient. Pumpkinking0192 (talk) 16:09, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
- It's changing because the article for Red and Blue lists September 1st as one of the release dates for the game. --It's Funktastic~!話してください 16:15, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
Origin
Tajiri stated that Meowth is based on "a Japanese proverb about a cat with money on his head that doesn't know it's there", which is about understanding the value of money. This doesn't really sound like Maneki-neko to me. Does anyone know what this proverb is? --SnorlaxMonster 15:41, 30 August 2014 (UTC)

I would say he's actually saying that the cat doesn't have a clue of the coin's value (to humans), not that it doesn't know it's there. He seems to actually be referring here to the Japanese equivalent of "casting pearls before swine", neko ni koban (AKA Pay Day) (because cats don't care that a koban/coin is worth anything to people). Even so, the shape of Meowth's paw still strongly suggests the influence of the Maneki-neko. Tiddlywinks (talk) 16:30, 30 August 2014 (UTC)
