Serena is a girl living in [[Vaniville Town]] with her friends Calem, [[Tierno]], [[Trevor]], and [[Shauna]]. She recently moved into Vaniville Town. Her {{kal|Grace|mom}} owns a {{p|Rhyhorn}} and {{p|Fletchling}}, the latter of which wakes Serena up at the start of the game.

Serena is a young girl who lives in [[Vaniville Town]] when the protagonist moves into town. Serena is the main rival of the character, choosing the starter Pokémon which is [[Damage modification|super effective]] to the {{player}}'s. She is also the character who teaches the player and [[Shauna]] how to [[Caught Pokémon|catch]] a Pokémon, catching a {{p|Bunnelby}} with the use of her {{p|Fletchling}}. Soon after, she can be seen in [[Santalune Forest]] with the other friends.

Serena is the child of two prominent Pokémon battlers, and is seen as one of the two best battlers of the group of friends, alongside the protagonist.

At [[Glittering Cave]], Serena helps the player defeat [[Team Flare]] to save the fossil assistant, and is given the fossil not chosen afterward. She then battles with the player against [[Tierno]] and [[Trevor]] at {{rt|7|Kalos}}. At the [[Tower of Mastery]] in [[Shalour City]], Serena battles the player for the chance to get the [[Key Stone|Mega Ring]].

The next time Serena battles the player is in front of the [[Coumarine Gym]].

When the group of friends meets up and decides to go to the haunted area in {{rt|14|Kalos}}, Serena is the only one of the friends to not go to the house, claiming that she has to train. She then helps the player defeat Team Flare at the [[Poké Ball Factory]].

The next time Serena battles the player is in front of the [[Anistar Gym]]. After the player defeats the gym, she will ask for a rematch, but cancels her challenge after [[Lysandre]] announces his plan of eradicating all life forms not a part of Team Flare. She then helps the player defeat Team Flare get to the legendary Pokémon and defeat Team Flare for good.

As the player traverses {{kal|Victory Road}}, Serena appears by a derelict altar and demands one last battle before their final challenge.

After the player defeats the {{pkmn|Champion}}, Serena can be battled in [[Kiloude City]], where, when defeated, she will give the player an {{DL|Mega Stone|Absolite}} and tell the player to meet [[Professor Sycamore]] in [[Anistar City]].

==Biology==
Pikachu is a short, chubby rodent Pokémon. It is covered in yellow fur, and its ears are long and pointed with black tips. It has a small mouth, brown eyes, and two red circles on its cheeks. There are pouches inside its cheeks where it stores electricity. Its forearms are short, with five fingers on each paw, and its feet have three toes. It has two brown stripes on its back, and its tail is in the shape of a lightning bolt with a patch of brown fur at the base. A female will have a V-shaped notch at the end of its tail. It is classified as a quadruped, but it has been known to stand and walk on its hind legs.

[[EP039|The anime]] has shown that Pikachu sometimes travel in groups. It raises its tail to check its surroundings, and is occasionally struck by lightning in this position. Living in forested areas, Pikachu is found foraging for [[Berry|berries]] it roasts with electricity to make them tender enough to eat. [[The Electric Tale of Pikachu|It has been observed]] eating and sometimes destroying telephone poles, wires, and other electronic equipment.

Pikachu is able to release electric discharges of varying intensity. Pikachu has [[EP030|been known]] to build up energy in its glands, and will need to discharge to avoid complications. It is also able to release energy through its tail, which acts as a grounding rod, as well as recharging fellow Pikachu with electric shocks. Although extremely disobedient at first, even prone to regularly electrocuting its owner, the two eventually got over this enmity, and this Pikachu, nicknamed "Pika", became one of his most loyal and trusted fighters, being used in almost every major battle Red has had. It also served on Yellow's team while Red was held captive by the [[Elite Four]] during the {{chap|Yellow}} before being returned to him, during which Yellow discovered that it can {{m|Surf}}.

In the [[Pokémon Adventures volume 9|ninth volume]] during the {{chap|Gold, Silver, & Crystal}}, {{adv|Yellow}} is seen to have a new addition to her team: a [[Chuchu|Pikachu]] of her own nicknamed "Chuchu", that she had found injured in [[Viridian Forest]] and nursed back to health. When Pika is left behind by Red on his trip to [[Mt. Silver]], Pika joined Yellow and Chuchu on their adventure to Johto.

Pikachu somehow manages to find its way into many of the expansions, causing there to be {{#expr: {{PAGESINCATEGORY:Pikachu (TCG)}} - 1}} known non-reprint Pokémon cards featuring Pikachu. There are also various Trainer cards with Pikachu in the card's artwork too, including the very sought-after tournament promos such as {{OBP|No.1 Trainer|Tournament promo}}.

The first Pikachu that appeared in the TCG was {{TCG ID|Base Set|Pikachu|58}} in the {{TCG|Base Set}} (which was reprinted in {{TCG|Base Set 2}} and in {{TCG|POP Series 2}} with different artwork). It was followed in {{TCG|Jungle|the next set}} by another {{TCG ID|Jungle|Pikachu|60}} (which was also reprinted in the {{TCG|Legendary Collection}}). The third Pikachu card released was the first-ever English {{TCG|Wizards Black Star Promos|promo card}}, {{TCG ID|Wizards Promo|Pikachu|1}}. The original Base Set Pikachu was also released as a special promotional card at {{wp|E3}}.

In the early days of the TCG, several notable errors were made regarding the Pikachu cards. The Base Set Pikachu was released with altered artwork at first, depicting it with red cheeks, instead of the original yellow. While this matched [[Ken Sugimori]]'s artwork, the yellow color on its cheeks was intentional by the artist, who depicted Pikachu using {{m|ThunderShock}}. This error appeared in both the E3 promotional version and the normal Base Set release. A second error was made in the production of Jungle set booster packs, which, instead of the Jungle set's Pikachu, sometimes contained first edition versions of the Pikachu that was released as a promo card.

Pikachu has also been featured on a number of TCG {{TCG|coin}}s, with one being included with the English and European languages-only {{tcg|Base Set 2}}. As February is included among the months considered as summer, it is the shortest season on average. Where the other seasons each last a total of 92 days in a real-time year, summer lasts a total of 89 days or, in case of a {{wp|leap year}}, 90 days. This is true for the southern hemisphere summer, as the Earth is near perihelion. Summer lasts only approximately 89 days, while winter lasts closer to 94. The opposite is in effect for the northern hemisphere.

When summer and winter start in the {{wp|northern hemisphere}} of the real world, the same season is in effect in-game. This is not true for spring and autumn, whereas it is spring in-game when autumn starts in real life and vice versa. The opposite is true for the {{wp|southern hemisphere}}: real-world spring and autumn start in months with their respective in-game seasons, while summer and winter start in in-game winter and summer respectively.

In some countries, most notably in {{wp|North America}} and parts of {{wp|Europe}}, seasons start at {{wp|solstice}}s and {{wp|equinox}}es, rather than starting at the first day of a month as is the case in countries like {{wp|Australia}}. In such cases, all four seasons appear in-game in each real life season.

{{game|Black and White|s}}, the first games to introduce this feature, were released during autumn in Japan, and the in-game season was spring. The international releases were released during spring in the northern hemisphere, and the in-game season was autumn.

I know that there's other items missing from the list for Generation I... I don't know the specifics since I don't use emulators or GameShark or anything, but I know of that least two more. There is an item called COIN and an item called ????? (which is not the Surfboard... it's a second item with the same name with a different effect). Someone should look into these and add them.

:Thanks for bringing this up. I was going to add those items to the list, but I was busy on [[Starfy Wiki]] and totally forgot to do so. I'm familiar with some of their specifics. If you change the items in any [[PokéMart]], you can actually buy individual [[Coin#Trivia|Coin]]s for 10 Pokédollars per coin. The trivia section on Coin's page had some speculation on it, so I've since removed it. The second ????? has an index number of 44 (0x2C). Unlike the "surfboard" (0x07) this item does not appear to have a use at all, and gives Professor Oak's unusable message when you try to use it. I believe that 0x07 is actually programmed to act the way it does, and I've found it interesting that its index number is [[List of items by index number (Generation I)|directly after]] that of the Bicycle, but it could just be a coincidence.

:There is [[List of items by index number (Generation I)|another item]] that is a duplicate of PP UP, occupying index number 50 (0x32). The interesting thing about it is that it has a price of 9800 Pokédollars, which may suggest that the developers put it there in case you were going to buy PP Ups at one point. The real PP Up (0x4F) does not have a buy price (forcing it in a Poké Mart allows you to buy it for 0 Pokédollars). It does follow Nugget (0x31), but Nugget's buy price is 10,000 Pokédollars. Although it shares PP Up (0x4F)'s name, it appears to be unusable and gives Oak's unusable message when you attempt to use it. The item is similar to two items in [[Generation II]], but I'm not convinced they're related. They are "TM04" (dec:195, 0xC3) and "TM28" (dec: 220, 0xDC) and directly follow the index numbers of the real items. They can't be used, but they are found in the items pocket and do not have valid "buy" prices.
