*The colors used in Smoochum's Generation II shiny sprite are the colors used in the normal-colored sprites afterwards.
Origin
Smoochum may be based on ガン黒 ganguro, blonde-haired, tanned Japanese girls, but is meant to resemble an otherwise normal human child. It should be also noted that Yuki Onna, a possible origin for Jynx, is sometimes shown as holding a seemingly human child.

Name origin
Smoochum's name is based on smooch, or kiss. It may also be a pun on smooch 'em. Its Japanese name is based on 夢中 muchū, daze or trance, and ちゅう chu, the sound of a kiss.
Its German name, Kussilla, comes from Kuss. Its French name, Lippouti, is a combination of the English word lip and poutou. Its Korean name, 뽀뽀라 Ppoppora includes Ppoppo, which is a small peck or kiss.
Dawn (Japanese: ヒカリ Hikari) is a ten-year-old girl traveling through Sinnoh with Ash and Brock. Her goal is to become a great coordinator like her mother, Johanna. Her first Pokémon is a Dawn that she received from Professor Rowan in the first Diamond & Pearl episode. She is voiced by 豊口めぐみ Megumi Toyoguchi in the Japanese version, Emily Jenness in the English dub, by Fernanda Bulara in the Brazilian dub, and by Gaby Ugarte in the Latin American Spanish dub.

In the anime
Character
Dawn is notable for her confidence, since she is always looking towards the future rather than dwelling on her mistakes. In the Japanese version, she often says, "Daijōbu!" Although not consistently translated in the English dub at first, she began to regularly use "No need to worry!".

Like Ash, she is lucky enough to have seen a legendary Pokémon, the projected soul of Mesprit in Following a Maiden's Voyage!.

She had a bicycle, but like Misty's and May's bikes, Ash's Pikachu destroyed it with its Thunderbolt. However, she did not mention this to Ash until over 30 episodes after it happened. Johanna gave Dawn one of her old ribbons from her days as a coordinator as a gift for luck. She also had a large suitcase full of dresses, but her mother made her leave it at home due to its impracticality.

Out of all of Ash's friends, Dawn is the only one so far to have her debut episode dedicated completely to herself. Unlike other debut episodes, Ash didn't even appear until the last 30 seconds. Additionally, she is the one of Ash's friends to get the most development.

She has a Contest Pass for the Sinnoh region. In Dawn's Early Night, when she competed in the Hearthome City Contest, she lost in the Appeal Round, making her the first of the main characters to drop out of a contest by losing the appeal round. In DP061, she lost the Appeal Round for second time in a row.

She has two childhood friends that appeared in the anime, Kenny and Yumomi, both of which call her sometimes Dee Dee (Japanese: ピカリ Pikari). Dawn has prevented them from telling Ash and Brock about the reason why she has this nickname. She seems to be closer to Yumomi than to Kenny.

Like May, she has her own ending theme song, titled 君のそばで 〜ヒカリのテーマ〜 By Your Side ~Hikari's Theme~. It is the first ending of the Diamond & Pearl anime. The song is performed by グリン Grin.

Pokémon
Trivia
*May and Misty were girls who traveled with Ash Ketchum. Both of them have Japanese names including the katakana カ ka and dub names starting with M, so some fans believed Dawn would as well have a dub name starting with M, because she had カ in her name. However, this was revealed to be false when her English name was revealed to be Dawn, which appears to reference Pokémon Diamond as Paul references Pokémon Pearl. "Dawn" may also be a reference to "Hikari," which means "light"--dawn is essentially the day's first light.
*Just like Ash's Pikachu, her Piplup wasn't ready to obey her when they first met. Eventually, they became fast friends.
*She is the only female main character that doesn't have a sibling.

*Unlike Ash's other friends, Dawn has already crossed a lot of boundaries that have previously only been held by Ash.
**She saw a legendary Pokémon prior to meeting Ash.
**She's the first main character to capture an Electric Pokémon besides Ash.
**Having already captured Dawn, Dawn, and Buizel, Dawn has captured more Pokémon in her first 35 episodes that any of the other main characters aside from Ash. This isn't including the Pokémon they all started with.
***Misty captured Misty and Misty before EP035.
***Brock captured Brock and Brock before The Battling Eevee Brothers.
***Tracey captured Tracey before A Sappy Ending (by which point he wasn't even traveling with Ash any longer) and hasn't captured anything since.
***May captured May before Win, Lose or Drew.
***Comparatively, Ash captured Caterpie, Pidgeotto, Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Krabby, Primeape, Muk, and all 30 of his Tauros before the end of EP035.
**She was the first main character other than Ash to battle a member of the Elite Four.
*Dawn is the second Coordinator that is voiced by Megumi Toyoguchi in Japanese, the first being Janet.
*She is one of two of Ash's friends who is not or part of a Gym Leader family. Tracey is probably the other. However, this is only presumed as no information is known about her father or Tracey's family.
*She is the only one of Ash's friends to lose the Appeal Round in a contest, which she has done twice.
*On the Pokémon Learning League website, her clothing has been altered so that her white undershirt has sleeves and she is wearing black stockings or tights.
*Dawn is the first Pokémon Trainer introduced as a novice to not have a Bug Pokémon be her first evolution, as Ash's first evolving Pokémon was Caterpie, and May's was Wurmple. Dawn's first evolving Pokémon was Aipom.
*She is the only main character aside from Ash to challenge an official Pokémon Gym, and the first of Ash's friends to compete in an official Gym Battle in the main series since Showdown at Pewter City and The Water Flowers of Cerulean City, where Brock battled Ash and Misty battled Ash respectively.
** Counting side-stories, the last time anyone besides Ash or his rivals were shown challenging a Gym Leader would be The Blue Badge of Courage, where Sakura fought Misty.
*Every Pokémon Dawn has captured or received has been in the Ground egg group.
*When Dawn had Buizel, she had two Waters, while afterwards, with Aipom, then Ambipom, she has two Normals. These relate to Ash's previous two female traveling partners, as Misty is a Gym Leader who specializes in Water-types, while May's father Norman is a Gym Leader that specializes in Normal-types.
*All of Ash's female friends have a native Korean word as their name in Korean version (dew, May and shine respectively). Such names were trendy in late 70s, now they are rare.
Bianca, known as "xdeadpan" on most message boards and communities, is a webmistress, whose interests involve video games, anime and foreign movies. She currently runs three domains Broken-Body.net, Stage-On.net and Crossing-Blades.net, two of which are dedicated to fanlistings. She joined the Bulbapedia as a SOVA member and still heavily supports the cause, as she solidly believes the original voice actors were the heart and soul of the show.

Bianca is an avid fan of Eevee, Max, Hikari and many "unconventional" shippings, particularly SundaeShipping, ApprenticeShipping and PetalburgShipping. She also enjoys PalletShipping and ContestShipping.
This user's trying to pick a fight with me over Melodi. He's insisting that closed captioning is not to be trusted, even if it's the only evidence of a dub name we have, which is true of Melodi as well as Karsten. He insists that I came to a "stupid conclusion" based on what he insists "isn't actually her name", which is far from the truth--I actually run the closed captioning track, hence I saw the name "Melodi" pop up on the screen firsthand! And it appears he won't give in unless it's agreed not to use closed captioning, which would be a stupid move since it's a very useful tool to use here at Bulbapedia! --Shiningpikablu252 22:56, 3 November 2007 (UTC)
It appears he's trying to pick another fight with me, this time over the opening theme played for EP082 and EP083. He's insistent that Pokémon World was the theme that played for those two episodes for their Kids WB airings, yet I remember Pokémon Theme playing for those two episodes on Kids WB. He's using the platform that Pokémon Theme for those two episodes is a Cartoon Network-only thing, when multiple people say otherwise. And I don't think he plans to back off unless he gets everyone to agree that his lie is true. --Shiningpikablu252 23:01, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
Help
Shiny Noctowl is being stubborn again. Basically this one user wants to list Misty winning Togepi in the private competition between her, Ash, Brock, and Meowth to be noted in Misty's Achievements section. I removed it twice and Shiny Noctowl keeps reverting my edits. The reason I believe it shouldn't be under her achivements is:
#It was a private competition. It wasn't like other trainers could enter it nor was it an special annual event. It was a result of an argument.
#If we list it on Misty's page we would also have to list on Ash's, Brock's, and Meowth's pages.
#We would also have to list the competition between Ash and Misty when they fought over who really caught Totodile.
#Does this mean we will have to list the achievements of all of Team Rocket's "The Odd Finger" games?

I don't believe competitions that resulted from an argument between trainers should count as Achievements. Achievements are won at official competitions were more then just Ash and his friends, and enemy's, enter. What are your thoughts on this? --<span style="color:#0005CD;">☆</span><span style="color:#15E200;">ケンジ</span><span style="color:#DC0062;">ガール</span> 23:30, 11 November 2007 (UTC)
Max (Japanese: マサト Masato) is a young boy from the anime, and one of the travelling companions of Ash. He is the only main character thus far who was not a Pokémon trainer and he did not own any Pokémon during the entire Advanced Generation series. He is the younger brother of May, and the son of Norman, the Petalburg Gym Leader, and Caroline. His Japanese voice actor is 山田ふしぎ Fushigi Yamada, his English voice actresses are Amy Birnbaum (AG003-AG145 ) and Kayzie Rogers (AG146-present). His Brazilian voice actor is Thiago Keplemaier.

Max is somewhat of a know-it-all, relying mostly on book smarts than actual experience. He seems to have come under Brock's tutelage for real-world knowledge. Max also took Misty's bit for yanking Brock by the ear whenever Brock sees a pretty woman. Max also frequently shows tension between he and his older sister May, such as telling embarassing stories about her to others or arguing with her about the way she does certain things.

Max is unique of the main characters in that he actually knew of Ash before he met up with him. Max watched the Silver Conference live and then continually watched the videos he made of it. When he stopped to find out who was making noise, he was surprised to see one of the competitors standing in the Gym. However, the two did not get off to a good start as Max continued to put Ash down, assuming that he could have defeated Harrison. After seeing Ash battle Norman, however, Max became impressed with Ash and soon decided to travel with him and May. Max's admiration of Ash has been seen on numerous occasions since then, though he admires his father even more.

The question of Max's starter Pokémon was raised a number of times while he was travelling in Hoenn. Between the Hoenn starters, it appears that he would have chosen Treecko as that is what he told May she should have chosen. However, in Having a Wailord of a Time he speculates that he could receive anything. Not knowing who it will be leads to some of the conflict and resolution with his doppelganger in Maxxed Out. At the end of that episode he stated that Max is lucky as he already knows who the Pokémon he will start his training with will be. Max finally did meet his future partner in Do I Hear a Ralts? when he befriended a weakened Ralts. Wanting to show his responsibility he took care of it and brought it to a Pokémon Center with a little help from Ash's Snorunt. When the two parted ways at the end of the episode, they promised to meet up again when Max was eligible to be a trainer.

However, while Max does not own any Pokémon he has befriended a variety of different species during his travels: Poochyena, Jirachi, Deoxys, a Shuppet in the episode Take This House and Shuppet. He simply played with the Shuppet, after fleeing from the team when he became angered with May. Max has also occasionally borrowed May's Munchlax, such as in Off the Unbeaten Path! when he needed a Pokémon to take part in an Orienteering contest.

Despite this, Max has been in a couple of Pokémon battles. In Gonna Rule the School, Max spent a day at Roxanne's Trainers School where he battled with a Poliwag against a Magby. He used strategy in increasing Poliwag's defense as much as possible with Defense Curl but this backfired when Magby managed to get enough hits in during this time to knock Poliwag out. In the episode Candid Camerupt!, Max borrowed Ash's Corphish for a battle against Vivi Winstrate. He also briefly commanded Ralts to send Team Rocket blasting off in the episode mentioned above.

Max is similar to Ritchie in his lack of popularity in the fandom. This has been stated on many occasions to be to do his lack of Pokémon, giving him little purpose compared to other main characters. However, certain episodes such as Do I Hear a Ralts? and Home is Where the Start Is have redeemed him in some fans' eyes.

At the end of Advanced Generation, May announced that she wished to travel to Johto alone. This initially upset Max but Ash cheered him up with the promise of a battle between the two when Max becomes a trainer. He is currently staying at home in Petalburg City and has so far not been seen since Ash began his journey in Sinnoh.

Trivia
*His appearance is based upon the School Kid trainer class. He also somewhat resembles the young boy that lives in Littleroot in Ruby and Sapphire.
*His Japanese name, Masato can be taken to be 正人, which literally means correct/elegant man, possibly referring to the fact that he is usually always right.
*Max was the first of Ash's friends to have a lead role in a Pokémon movie, as all movies before Jirachi: Wish Maker had either Ash or a character of the day with the lead role.
Origin
Smoochum may be based on ガン黒 ganguro, blonde-haired, tanned Japanese girls.

Name origin
Smoochum's name is based on smooch, or kiss. It may also be a pun on smooch 'em. Its Japanese name is based on ちゅう chu, the sound of a kiss. The German name cames from the English word kiss and the French name is derived from the English word lip.

Dawn (Japanese: ヒカリ Hikari) is a ten-year-old girl travelling through Sinnoh with Ash and Brock. Her goal is to become a great coordinator like her mother, Johanna. Her first Pokémon is a Piplup that she recieved from Professor Rowan. She is voiced by 豊口めぐみ Megumi Toyoguchi in the Japanese and Emlyn Morinelli in English.

Dawn is notable for her confidence, since she is always looking towards the future rather than dwelling on her mistakes. In the Japanese version, she often says, "Daijōbu!"

However, she has never mentioned this to Ash on-screen. Johanna gave Dawn one of her old ribbons from her days as a coordinator as a gift for luck. She also had a large suitcase full of dresses, but her mother made her leave it at home due to its impracticality.

Like May, she has her own theme song, 君のそばで 〜ヒカリのテーマ〜 By Your Side ~Hikari's Theme~, the first ending of the Diamond & Pearl anime. The song is sung by グリン Grin.

Pokémon
This listing is of Dawn's Pokémon as of the most recent Japanese episode:

On hand
* Piplup
* Buneary
* Pachirisu
* Buizel

Trivia
*Her Japanese name means 光 Light.

*Just like Ash's Pikachu, Dawn's Piplup wasn´t ready to obey her when they first met. Eventually, the became fast friends.

*Dawn is the only female main character that doesn't have a sibling.
His Japanese voice actor is 山田ふしぎ Fushigi Yamada, his English voice actresses are Amy Birnbaum (AG003-AG145 ) and Jamie Peacock (AG146-present).

The qustion of Max's starter Pokémon was raised a number of times while he was travelling in Hoenn. At the end of that episode he stated that Maxx is lucky as he aleady knows who the Pokémon he will start his training with will be.

Befriended Pokémon
* Poochyena → Mightyena (A Bite to Remember)
* Ralts (Do I Hear a Ralts?)

His Japanese name, Masato can be taken to be 正人, which literally means correct/elegant man, possibly referring to the fact that he is usually always right.
Gary Oak (Japanese: オーキドシゲル Shigeru Ōkido, Brazilian: Gary Carvalho) is the prime rival of Ash, and grandson of Professor Oak. He started out as an arrogant, snot-nosed brat -- like his game counterpart, Blue -- but eventually matured and became a Pokémon researcher like his grandfather. His Japanese voice actor is 小林優子 Yūko Kobayashi, his English voice actor is Jimmy Zoppi, and his Brazilian-Portugese voice actors are Rodrigo Andreatto and Marcelo Campos (in Putting the Air Back in Aerodactyl).

Gary has an attitude of catch first, ask questions later, as seen in It's Mr. Mime Time.
Jimmy Zoppi is a voice actor for the English-language dub of the Pokémon anime. He is credited under the name of Billy Beach for his TAJ Productions work.
Zoppi was born March 8, 1954 in West Long Branch, New Jersey.
Most of his voices in the Pokémon anime were minor, until Pokémon USA got the rights of the anime from 4Kids Entertainment, who let their rights lapse December 31, 2005, and recast the series voices. Currently (as of Pokémon: Battle Frontier), he does the voices of James and Meowth from Team Rocket and Professor Oak, as well as Gary Oak.
