'''Koga''' (Japanese: '''キョウ''' ''Kyō'') was the [[Gym Leader|Leader]] of [[Fuchsia City]]'s {{pkmn|Gym}}. He is a student of ninjutsu who specializes in {{type2|Poison}} [[Pokémon]]. He handed out the {{Badge|Soul}} to {{pkmn|Trainer}}s who defeated him.

He was promoted to the [[Elite Four]], at some time after the events of [[Generation I]] and its remakes, but before the events of [[Generation II]] and its remakes, thus leaving his daughter, [[Janine]], in charge of the [[Fuchsia Gym]].

==In the games==
[[Image:FireRed LeafGreen Koga.png|left|thumb|150px|Artwork of Koga from {{game|FireRed and LeafGreen|s}}]]

Koga, known as the Poisonous Ninja Master, serves two roles in the Pokémon games. In {{game5|Red|Blue|Yellow|FireRed|LeafGreen}} he is the leader of the [[Fuchsia Gym]], but is promoted to a member of the [[Elite Four]] in {{game5|Gold|Silver|Crystal|HeartGold|SoulSilver}}. Koga is a user of the {{type2|Poison}}; he likes the despair and horror that Poison-type Pokémon can inflict on others.

Koga has studied medicine and antidotes; he makes he own potions to heal his Pokémon. He also serves as a teacher. Many students come to him to be trained in the arts of {{wp|Ninjutsu}} and Pokémon. One of his students is his own daughter, [[Janine]], who takes over his Gym in the [[Generation II]]/{{gen|IV}} storyline. In addition to these roles, Koga also patrols the grounds of the [[Kanto Safari Zone]], to ensure that the players of the Safari Game are safe from the [[wild Pokémon]] within.

In [[Generation I]]/{{gen|III}}, Koga's Gym is typically the sixth to be challenged. He has built invisible walls in the Fuchsia City gym, constructing a confusing maze out of them. Koga awaits challengers in the center of the maze, clearly visible, but a group of [[Juggler]]s and [[Tamer]]s—Koga's students— must be fought first. Defeating him will earn the successful Trainer {{TM|06|Toxic}} and the {{badge|Soul}}.

With the future of the Gym in his daughter's hands, Koga advances to a role in the Pokémon League of Kanto and Johto before the events of Generation II/IV. In these games, he is the second member of the Elite Four to be faced. The team he uses in this role is similar to his Gym Leader's teams; the main difference is the introduction of {{cat|Generation II Pokémon|Pokémon not native to Kanto}}. Koga's battle style as an Elite Four member is designed to confound and destroy his opponent in battle. Rather than using brute force, Koga attempts to [[status ailment|confuse, put to sleep, and poison]] his opponent.
==In the anime==
[[Image:Koga.png|thumb|left|215px|Koga in the anime.]]
Koga's only anime appearance was in the episode ''[[EP032|The Ninja Poké-Showdown]]''.

Koga is a ninja who trains in an old mansion, the Fuchsia City Gym, in the woods outside Fuchsia City. The Gym is filled with traps such as fake mirrors, invisible walls, pits, and many {{p|Voltorb}}. [[Aya]], Koga's younger sister, is one of his students.

{{Ash}}, [[Misty]], and [[Brock]] managed to overcome the traps in the Gym and Ash was finally able to challenge Koga. Although [[Ash's Pidgeotto]] initially lost to Koga's newly-evolved {{p|Venomoth}}, prompting Ash to call out {{AP|Charmander}}, their match was interrupted when [[Team Rocket]] tried to steal Koga's large supply of Voltorb, although they had raided the Gym with the intent of getting {{type2|Poison}} Pokémon. Team Rocket was stopped by {{TP|Misty|Psyduck}}, allowing Ash and Koga to have a rematch. Pitting Charmander against Koga's {{p|Golbat}}, Ash triumphed and won the Soul Badge.
The battle was interrupted by [[Team Rocket]], and afterward, Koga offered to trade Venomoth to [[Misty]] for her {{TP|Misty|Psyduck}}, but she declined.
==In the ''Pokémon Adventures'' manga==
[[Image:Koga.PNG|right|frame|Koga in the ''Pokémon Adventures'' manga.]]
Koga is one of the three villainous heads of Team Rocket, and serves under [[Giovanni]].

Koga debuts in the {{chap|Red, Green & Blue}} chapter in ''[[PS007|Raging Rhydon]]'' searching the {{evostone|Moon Stone}} in [[Mt. Moon]], here Koga fights with {{adv|Red}} and [[Misty]] and forces his Rhyhorn to evolve with a mysterious injection, revealing what happened to Misty's Gyarados when it was kidnapped, however the mission fails. Koga later tries to bump off Red in [[Lavender Town]]'s [[Pokémon Tower]], where he uses a Gastly to reanimate the corpses of dead Pokémon buried there. He also attacks Red with his Arbok. However, {{adv|Blue}} has his {{p|Charmeleon}} slice Arbok in half. Under his boss's orders, he captures {{p|Articuno}} and brings it to [[Saffron City]]. He is once again defeated by Blue at [[Silph Co.]], albeit that he almost killed both of them by not allowing them to reach their Poké Balls by using his Muk, then almost freezing them to death with his Articuno. After he is defeated and knocked out Red gets Koga's Soul Badge and Blue uses his special Golbat to find out where [[Team Rocket]] is holding his grandfather.

Later, Koga helps the [[Pallet Town]] Trainers in the fight against the [[Elite Four]] during the [[Cerise Island]] battle. Koga is paired with Blue and battles Agatha, but Blue first returns his Golbat to him. When the two of them finally meet Agatha, she separates them, making Blue and Koga's Golbat that he got paired up with again face Agatha's Golbat while Koga's Arbok had to face Agatha's Arbok which could change its patterns allowing it to gain the upper hand over Koga. When Blue was paralyzed from a Haunter's Lick he started throwing his shuriken balls which Agatha thought was a desperate tactic but in reality the were Pokémon holding Paralyze Heals hoping just one of them would get to him, which it did. Blue then joins him and with it he commanded it to use Leech Life on himself using his blood and put it on Arbok's torso to prevent its ability to change its pattern. Without Arbok's ability, Agatha was defeated.

Or so it seemed. In reality, Agatha just pretended to be defeated and had her Gengar masquerade as Koga and Blue's shadow to slowly suck the life out of them hidden due to Koga's quick loss of blood. After traveling through the maze for a while, they found themselves back where they started with Agatha nowhere to be found. They then figured out her plan and defeated the Gengar.

Unlike the other two Rocket Admins, who were instructed to return and manage their gyms, Koga was not even reached by Giovanni. He then disappears for a time, leaving Janine in charge of the Gym. Janine is worried for her father, but opposes his criminal ties. At the end of the Johto adventures, Koga decides to ally himself with three other Trainers who had been abandoned by evil organizations: [[Bruno]], [[Will]], and [[Karen]].

Two of Koga's Pokémon have unusual powers: his Arbok can regenerate itself as long as its head remains intact (see above); and his unusually small Golbat's mouth can be used almost like a magic mirror for {{wp|scry}}ing to see things from a distance, even if walls or land are in the way. Blue takes this Golbat and keeps it for quite some time before returning it to Koga at Cerise Island.

Koga also uses custom-made [[Poké Ball]]s which can be thrown as {{wp|shuriken}}—perhaps an inspiration for [[Falkner]]’s later boomerang Poké Balls.

==Trivia==
*In the manga [[Magical Pokémon Journey]], the ninja-in-training [[Walnut]] is an admirer of Koga.
*Koga makes a short cameo appearance in a chapter of the [[Electric Tale of Pikachu]] manga.
*Out of the original Generation I Gym Leaders, Koga has the fewest Trainer cards in the Gym Leader sets of the TCG. Incidentally, his [[Koga's Ninja Trick (Gym Challenge 115)|only Trainer card]] besides the basic Koga card had to be edited because it featured a {{wp|manji}}, which could have caused controversy between cultures; the infamous Nazi {{wp|swastika}} is a reversed manji.
*Because he became a member of the [[Elite Four]] in [[Generation II]], he is technically the first member of the Elite Four seen in the anime, though he was not a member at the time he was shown. He is also the only one Ash defeated in battle (again, however, it was as a Gym Leader).
*In {{game2|Diamond|Pearl|Platinum}}, the [[Ninja Boy]] on Route 217 mentions different kinds of ninja in the world. He says, "There are several kinds of ninjas. Are you an Iga or a Kouga ninja?" This is a reference to the two main schools of ninjutsu, Iga-ryu and Kōga-ryu, the latter of which Koga himself is named after.
* Koga's {{game|Yellow}} [[party|team]] is of a higher level than his [[Elite Four]] team in Gold, Silver, and Crystal and HeartGold and SoulSilver during the first match with him.
* Koga, [[Bruno]], and [[Lance]] are the only members of the Elite Four who have appeared in all four generations.
* Koga's updated [[Sugimori]] artwork for {{game|HeartGold and SoulSilver|s}} has him in a pose identical to that of his daughter Janine's in her VS artwork, only reversed.

'''A.J.''' (Japanese: '''アキラ''' ''Akira'') is a [[Pokémon trainer]] in his mid-teens who lives between [[Cerulean City]] and [[Vermilion City]]. Other trainers refer to him as a "Wild Pokémon Trainer", although what this is meant to imply is never made clear. His dream is to become a [[Pokémon Master]] with the help of his favorite [[Pokémon]], {{p|Sandshrew}}. He had a [[Gym#A.J.'s Gym|gym]], but it was an unofficial gym not sponsored by the [[Pokémon League]] and did not have a related [[badge]].

=In the anime=
[[Image:trainerAJ.jpg|thumb|Pokémon trainer A.J.]]
A.J. was the [[character of the day]] in ''[[EP008|The Path to the Pokémon League]]''. His Japanese voice actor is ''[[Nobuyuki Hiyama]]'' and his English voice actor is [[Maddie Blaustein]].

In this episode, [[Ash Ketchum|Ash]], [[Misty]], and [[Brock]] were on the way to Vermilion City, when they heard about a local trainer who was undefeated. Ash, eager to challenge this trainer, went to A.J.'s gym and saw a sign above it announcing that A.J. had been undefeated through 98 matches. A.J. returned to the Gym after catching some wild Pokémon. Ash challenged him to battle the number 99.

Ash begins to say about a person with 98 victories but without a Gym Badge. A.J. says that he wasn't planning on challenging a Gym Leader until he had 100 wins in a row. Ash bragged about the two badges he had at the time just with ten victories, and A.J. insulted him and said he must've gotten them from weak Gym Leaders, which angered Brock and Misty. A.J. defeated Ash with his {{p|Sandshrew}} without much effort, causing Ash to complain and accuse A.J. of cheating.

As the group was about to leave, they looked inside the Gym, and they saw A.J. using a whip to send his Sandshrew diving into a pool. Ash attacked A.J., thinking that he was torturing his Pokémon. A.J. then explained that he was strengthening his Sandshrew's resistance against water. Sandshrew and all of A.J.'s other Pokémon were wearing [[EV-enhancing item#Macho Brace|Macho Brace]]s to intensify their strength. He also had all of his Pokémon exercise is rigorous routines. Ash complained about A.J. treating his Pokémon too harshly, and asks Brock and Misty to back him up. However, instead Brock compliments A.J. on the specialized [[Pokémon food|food]] he prepares for his Pokémon.

[[Jessie]], [[James]], and [[Meowth (Team Rocket)|Meowth]] then tried to steal [[Ash's Pikachu|Pikachu]], but ended up accidentally taking Sandshrew instead. Not knowing what had happened, Ash guessed that Sandshrew had ran away, and offered A.J.'s other Pokémon spots on his [[party|team]]. They ignored him. Sandshrew escaped from [[Team Rocket]] by using {{m|Dig}}, accidentally bringing Meowth along with him. After A.J.'s Sandshrew came back, he challenged Team Rocket to a battle, and his Sandshrew defeated Team Rocket, winning A.J. the final victory needed to set off and collect Gym Badges.

==Pokémon==
This listing is of A.J.'s Pokémon in the [[Pokémon anime]].

* {{p|Sandshrew}}
* {{p|Rattata}} (3)
* {{p|Beedrill}}
* {{p|Butterfree}}

=In the Electric Tale of Pikachu manga=
A.J. also makes an appearance in the [[Electric Tale of Pikachu]] manga. A.J, along with [[Samurai]] and Ash, wanted to find the [[Hidden Village]] run by [[Melanie]].

==In the games==
In [[Pokémon Yellow]], a game based on the anime, a [[Youngster]] appears on [[Route 9]]. This trainer solely uses a Level 24 Sandshrew that has the move {{m|Fissure}}, much like A.J.'s Sandshrew in the anime. This trainer only appears in Pokémon Yellow.
'''Fury Swipes''' is a mostly accurate {{type2|Normal}} move introduced in [[Generation I]] that deals very little damage.
==Effect==
{{swipe move effects}}

===Generation I===
Fury Swipes does damage, hitting 2-5 times per use. There is a 37.5% chance that it will hit 2 times, a 37.5% chance that it will hit 3 times, a 12.5% chance that it will hit 4 times, and a 12.5% chance that it will hit 5 times. Though technically only the first hit can critical hit, each hit per use will do the same amount of damage.

Fury Swipes will end immediately if it breaks a {{m|Substitute}}. {{m|Bide}} and {{m|Counter}} will only acknowledge one hit of a Fury Swipes attack.

==Welcome==
Welcome to [[Bulbapedia]], {{BASEPAGENAME}}!

As a new user, you may wish to learn a few things that will be useful in your editing:
*For a basic overview of wiki code, see [[Help:Editing|this page]].
*The {{bp|manual of style}} is very important. Make sure to read it. It outlines all official policies of Bulbapedia.
*The word [[Pokémon]] is spelled with a capital '''P''' and an accented '''é'''. The P, of course, is accessed easily by holding Shift and pressing the P key, while the é can be accessed using Alt + 130 or Alt + 0233 on a Windows computer, and Option + e, then e again on a Mac. Otherwise, you can click it in the character palette below the editbox.
*The word [[Poké Ball]] is spelled as two words. The "Poké" part is identical to the four beginning letters in "Pokémon"; "Ball" is spelled with a captial '''B''' (which is, again, accessed by holding Shift and pressing the B key). The spelling "Pokéball" arises frequently, but is incorrect.
*On {{bp|talk page}}s, please sign your comments with four tildes (<nowiki>~~~~</nowiki>).
*The use of {{cat|link templates}} is official policy. For an explanation on their use, see the page on {{bp|shortlinks}}.
*If you happen to spot a vandal in the [[Special:Recentchanges|recent changes]] that has not been dealt with, please see {{bp|dealing with vandalism|this page}} for how to deal with it.
*A list of pages that are linked to, but have not been created, can be found at [[Special:Wantedpages|this page]]. A list of short articles that may require more information can be found {{cat|stubs|here}}, while a list of articles that need improvement can be found {{cat|articles needing improvement|here}}.
*A list of the admins that you can contact in case of a problem, can be found [[Special:Listusers/sysop|here]].

Thank you, and have a good time editing here!{{:User:Theryguy512/Sig}} 21:45, 23 January 2008 (UTC)
== [[List of in-game trades]] ==

Why did you remove two instances of [[Valuable item#Tinymushroom and Big Mushroom|Tinymushroom]] from the FireRed and LeafGreen section of the page when you added in two nicknames for the Yellow section? Removing content for no reason is considered vandalism, whether it's intentional or not. Try being more careful when editing pages in the future. --[[User:Shiningpikablu252|Shiningpikablu252]] 23:04, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

I think I edited from an older version, took too long, and accidentally overwrote it. My bad. I'll be far more careful in the future. --[[User:Wild Eep|Wild Eep]] 23:14, 23 January 2008 (UTC)

If I could just input my opinion here...

First off, I wholeheartedly agree with Pokemaniac, for saying that all Glitch Pokémon are Pokémon. I've taken that stand myself for as long as I can remember. I mean, it makes sense. Missingno. has a catch rate, a dex entry, a sprite, attacks, types, a cry, and base stats. Far as I'm concerned, that's what constitutes a Pokémon.

Secondly, I think glitch Pokémon should be included in these sorts of articles, but under a special category. Say, for instance, the page [[Normal (type)]]. We have categories for pure normals, normals with a secondary type, and other types with normal as a secondary type. I'm thinking a fourth category: Glitch Pokémon with a Normal type. This would include any and all glitch Pokémon with Normal as their only, first, second, or both types [[A (uppercase)|(And yes, there is a glitch Pokémon that's Normal/Normal)]]. Just my idea. Feel free to shoot it down at your leisure. [[User:Missingno. Master|Missingno. Master]] 01:21, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

:...
:We don't need to include glitches on every single page that's made up of the 'regular' Pokémon, like the [[Normal (type)]] page. Look through the history - I think at one point Missingno was on there, but got taken off. See? :p {{User:TinaTheKirlia/Sig}} 01:36, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
:::Well, there's a very large difference. Regular Pokémon appear in everything Pokémon-related. Glitch Pokémon don't appear in anything else but the games because they were never intended to be seen by anyone but the programmers. {{:User:TTEchidna/sig}} 04:16, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
It is displayed on the Pokémon's profile screen where its [[nature]], date met, place met, and berry flavor preference are shown.

A Pokémon's characteristic is determined by the remainder of its highest IV divided by 5 (known as [[wp:modulo operation|modulo operation]] in programming). Since it is built this way, Pokémon transfered from the {{pkmn|games}} of [[Generation III]] via [[Pal Park]] have a characteristic without their stats being changed.

==List of characteristics==

{| {{graytable}}
| Loves to eat || Proud of its power || Sturdy body || Highly curious || Strong willed || Likes to run
|-
! 1, 6, 11, 16, 21, 26, 31
| Often dozes off || Likes to thrash about || Capable of taking hits || Mischievous || Somewhat vain || Alert to sounds
|-
! 2, 7, 12, 17, 22, 27
| Often scatters things || A little quick tempered || Highly persistent || Thoroughly cunning || Strongly defiant || Impetuous and silly
| Scatters things often || Likes to fight || Good endurance || Often lost in thought || Hates to lose || Somewhat of a clown
! 4, 9, 14, 19, 24, 29
| Likes to relax || Quick tempered || Good perserverence || Very finicky || Somewhat stubborn || Quick to flee
|}

Note that having a certain characteristic does not necessarily imply that the highest possible value for an IV is present. A Pokémon with an "Alert to sounds" characteristic could have a 6 in Speed (and thus very low IVs across all of its stats since none could be higher than 6) instead of a 31 in Speed.

==Examples==
A {{p|Mudkip}} has the following IVs:
|-
!HP||Attack||Defense||Sp. Attack||Sp. Defense||Speed
|- align="center"
|24||18||17||29||24||27
|}
Since its highest IV value is 29 in Special Attack, its characteristic will be "Very finicky."

A {{p|Ditto}} has the following IVs:

{| {{graytable}}
!HP||Attack||Defense||Sp. Attack||Sp. Defense||Speed
|- align="center"
|4||0||0||6||13||10
|}
Since its highest IV value is 13 in Special Defense, its characteristic will be "Hates to lose."

In the official Japanese D/P stickerbook, which includes Gym Leader stickers, all names are spelt in Romaji. メリッサ is romanised [[Melissa]] (we already use this romanisation), マキシ is romanised [[Maxi]] (again, we already use that). However, there are three romanisation which we did not use. There are: デンジ as Denzi (instead of Denji) and トウガン as Tougan (instead of Tōgan) and ヒョウタ as Hyouta (instead of Hyōta). Since they're from official stickerbook, they are trademarked romanisation and we must use them. --[[User:Maxim|Maxim]] 17:14, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
She hands out the [[Badge#Relic Badge|Relic Badge]] to [[Pokémon trainer|trainers]] who defeat her. She specializes in {{t|Ghost}}-type [[Pokémon]]. She is apparently not from the country the games are set in, and often peppers her speech with phrases of French.

Her dress shares many elements as the design of the first [[Pokémon]] on her [[party]], {{p|Drifblim}}: it has a yellow "X" over a puffed out skirt of striped purple fabric.
Fantina uses {{t|Ghost}}-type Pokémon in her battles. For defeating her, trainers receive the [[Badge#Relic Badge|Relic Badge]], [[TM65]] {{m|Shadow Claw}} and are able to use {{m|Surf}} outside of battle. She considers herself to be a Contest Expert and refuses to let the hero challenge her until they have four badges. Fantina speaks French and is an immigrant from another country. Upon arriving in her country, she decided to become a performer, so she dress up in fancy outfits for Pokémon Contests. She also studied Pokémon and eventually attained the title of Gym Leader.

Fantina can occasionally be competed against in [[Pokémon Super Contest|Super Contests]], in which she uses her {{p|Drifblim}}.
