Mahogany is a small, quiet town in the northeast mountains.

The Lake of Rage is the largest lake in the region, and exists alongside a maze-like forest to the west. The area is known for its Gyarados population, and the most notorious resident is visible just offshore. Bring a decent Poké Ball supply and swim out to meet the Red Gyarados. Unlike others of its species, this Gyarados evolved under mysterious circumstances which resulted in its unusual coloration.
When the battle ends, you find a Red Scale floating on the water. This can be traded to Mr. Pokémon back on 30 for an Exp. Share.

Climb back onto shore and speak to the man reading the sign. This is Lance; he has been investigating rumors that all of the Magikarp in the lake are being forced to evolve prematurely. He believes that an odd radio signal from Mahogany is the cause, so follow him back to the suspicious-looking shop.
Take the first left and head south to the security center. Defeat Scientist Jed, grab the Guard Spec., and examine the computer to deactivate the security cameras. Leave the room and turn east to find a Hyper Potion. Turn right and walk along the south hallway. Collect the Nugget and go down the stairs in the southwest.
Lance is waiting for you here, and heals your Pokémon before running off. Beat up the two Rocket Grunts nearby, and take the southeast stairs to the lowest floor.
Lance informs you that two passwords are required to reach the boss. Grab the Full Heal to the north, then battle the Scientist and the female Rocket in the southeast room. When defeated, she gives up the first password: SlowpokeTail. Continue on to the southwest room. Defeat the Rocket here to learn the second password, Raticate. Pick up the X Special and the Protein by the potted plants, then head north. Grab the Ice Heal in the hallway, and climb up the northeast stairs.

B2F
Head south to pick up a hidden Full Heal next to the computer, then head all the way to the west, where you are challenged by another Rocket. Go down the stairs to reach the boss's room.

B3F
Take a quick detour up the south stairs to get 46, then head towards the doors. When you approach them, Silver appears and insists that he is the one who will eliminate Team Rocket. After he leaves, pick up the Ultra Ball at the end of the hall, then input the two passwords at the door to enter the boss's office. The Executive here talks about Giovanni disbanding the group three years ago, and how the organization has continued on since then, planning for his return.
The Mahogany Gym specializes in Ice Pokémon, and Pryce has installed frozen tiles to thwart all but the most determined Trainers. The most direct route to the Gym Leader can be made in six moves. Stand by the Poké Ball statue on the left, and slide up twice to the first Boarder. Slide right, down, left, up, and right again to meet Pryce. Fire-, Fighting-, Rock-, and Steel attacks are the most effective against Ice Pokémon, but Electric attacks are also effective against the Seel and Shellder families. Avoid bringing Grass-, Flying-, or Ground Pokémon.
The Lake of Rage (Japanese: いかりのみずうみ Lake of Rage), also known as Gyarados Lake (Japanese: ギャラドスこ Gyarados Lake), is a location in Johto. It is located just north of Mahogany Town, connecting it with 43, making it the northern-most accessible point of the Johto region. A large lake spans the area of the Lake of Rage, with a few residents living nearby. It is said to be the largest lake in the region. West of the lake lies a labyrinth of trees, which hides a house.

It is said the Lake of Rage was created the last time many Gyarados got together and stirred up a storm. The crater that remained filled with rainwater and became the Lake of Rage. In the middle of the lake dwells a Shiny Gyarados that had recently became irritable due to the radio waves transmitted by Team Rocket from their hideout in Mahogany Town. The Lake of Rage was considered a dangerous place to go, as the red Gyarados started tipping over boats and scaring swimmers.

Geography
The Lake of Rage is located north of 43. Along the way to the Lake of Rage, the player will meet several members of Team Rocket. By surfing into the middle of the lake, the player will encounter a red Gyarados. After catching, defeating or fleeing from it, the player will receive a Red Scale. Lance, of the Elite Four, will be waiting for the player on the shore afterwards, and will speak of the secret Team Rocket HQ in Mahogany Town.

In HeartGold and SoulSilver, it will rain at the lake every day. After defeating or catching all three Electrode in Team Rocket HQ, it will not rain on Wednesday, and the water level will drop. Different items are accessible and different Trainers appear depending on the weather.

To the northwest of the lake, there is a house hidden within a labyrinth of trees. Inside, a man will give players 10 for locating the reclusive house. The path to this house begins in Route 43, on the western side. In Generation II, crossing the lake is not required, but it is the opposite in Generation IV, as the house is only reachable when the Lake is flooded. On Wednesdays, Wesley is found near this house, and will give the player a Black Belt the first time they meet, and then a List of Ribbons in the games every week after having met all seven siblings (Generation IV only).

Southeast of the lake is another house, where a Fishing Guru resides. His greatest dream is to see the world's largest Magikarp, and he regularly measures those brought to him in order to realize it. If he is shown a Magikarp, he will calculate its size and give the player an Elixir if it is bigger than the largest one he had seen before. Initially, this record is 3'6" and held by Ralph.

The player can also Fly to the Lake of Rage; in Generation II, it is the only destination in any game that can be flown to where the player will not land in front of a building, but in HeartGold and SoulSilver, the player lands in front of the Fishing Guru's house.
Main series
The Lake of Rage, referred to as Lake Rage in the anime, appeared in Talkin' 'Bout an Evolution and Rage Of Innocence. Ash, ashfr, and Lance learned that Team Rocket was conducting experiments at the lake as a part of Project R, which involved forcing Pokémon to evolve. Since the Lance was the only Pokémon in the lake to have been affected by their experiments, Team Rocket captured it for further studying. However, their project ended in a failure when Lance destroyed Team Rocket's research facility at the lake, followed by the Red Gyarados escaping and getting caught by Lance.

Pokémon Generations
The Lake of Rage appeared in The Lake of Rage. Lance had briefly encountered and battled the Red Gyarados before at the lake, motivating him in investigating the Team Rocket HQ in Mahogany Town. After the radio wave generator that had forced Gyarados to evolve had been destroyed, Lance revisited the lake to see that the Red Gyarados had calmed down.

In the manga
Pocket Monsters HGSS Jō's Big Adventure
The Lake of Rage appeared in JBA4, where Jō defended the Red Gyarados from Ariana and Petrel, eventually gaining its trust and help in defeating the two Executives.

The Lake of Rage first appeared in Raise the Red Gyarados, where Silver came to inspect it per Lance's instructions, followed by Gold. The two were soon attacked by a swarm of Gyarados. Based on the static on their Pokégear screens, Silver deduced that a radio wave was behind the lake's Magikarp evolving and the Gyarados rampaging. Eventually, Silver managed to locate the source of the radio waves, a Red Gyarados, and proceeded to caught it with Gold's help, stopping the radio waves. However, they were then approached by the Masked Man.

In Delibird Delivery - 1 and 2, Gold and Silver battled against the Masked Man, with Silver using his newly caught Red Gyarados to command the lake's other Gyarados to attack him. Despite this, however, both Gold and Silver suffered a crushing defeat.

In Raising Raichu and Do-Si-Do with Dodrio, Lt. Surge visited the Lake of Rage to investigate Gold and Silver's disappearance. After investigating a nearby souvenir shop and surviving an encounter with the Masked Man, he dived into the lake with his submarine and found the Red Gyarados frozen in ice, as well as some of Gold and Silver's belongings.

HeartGold & SoulSilver
In Dealing With A Koffing Fit, it was revealed that Team Rocket had caused a swarm of Gyarados to appear at the Lake of Rage. Silver deduced this as one of their methods of announcing their return.

Trivia
* Unused debug text in Japanese Crystal spells the lake's name as 「イカリのみずうみ」, with ikari in katakana (イカリ) as opposed to the usual hiragana (いかり). Additionally, there is a leftover map in Gold and Silver that includes a Pokémon Center, Poké Mart, and even a Pokémon Gym surrounding a lake that is a similar size and shape to the Lake of Rage.
* Sevii Islands in FireRed and LeafGreen (listen) is a rearrangement of from Gold and Silver (listen), which is shared with the Lake of Rage.
* Even though it is said that Team Rocket's radio signal is evolving all the Magikarp in Lake of Rage, Magikarp can still be found there at any time. Even if the radio signal is being listened to on the Poké Gear, Gyarados do not show up more often.
* Ace Trainer Lois mentions having seen a pink Butterfree. This is a reference to Butterfree's shiny form in the games, which does have pink coloring.
* In German, unlike other languages, the Lake of Rage is not named after a specific move.
