Onix (Japanese: イワーク Iwark) is a dual-type Pokémon.

It evolves into Steelix when traded holding a Type-enhancing item.

Biology
Physiology
Onix basically resembles a giant chain of gray boulders. The Pokémon has a magnet in its brain that serves as an internal compass. Onix's body becomes more rounded and smoother as it grows with age. A fully grown Onix measures at an enormous 28 feet 10 inches, or 8.8 metres.

Gender differences
None.

Special abilities
It tunnels under the ground at over fifty miles per hour. Its Rock Head and Sturdy are the only thing that protects Onix from the tremors it causes. If Onix takes a hard enough blow and it's body falls apart, it can regrow the rest in a matter of a few weeks. It shares this trait with Arbok.

Behavior
They are very hot headed Pokémon and will constantly attack humans and Pokémon when various objects are caught in its cragged body in the wild, but under the care of trainers they will show signs of distress instead of attacking others.

Habitat
Onix can be found in mountains and caves, though they prefer underground tunnels with little light. It can also be found scragged mountains and abandoned mines.

Diet
In the anime
Brock first appeared in Showdown in Pewter City under the ownership of Brock. He used it in his journeys in Kanto and Johto before giving it to his little brother, Forrest, in A Family That Battles Together, Stays Together. At some time before Grating Spaces, it evolved into a Steelix.

Ash and co. encountered a giant Bruno in To Master the Onixpected. It was on a rampage until Bruno managed to get a Sandslash from under the Rock Snake Pokémon's "skin." Bruno captured the Onix afterward.

The Crystal Onix featured a Crystal Onix. Ash and co. helped a glass sculptor named Mateo search for it because Mateo believed it would help inspire him to be better at his craft.

In Hello Pummelo, Drake of the Orange Crew owns an Onix and he used it to fight Ash's Squirtle in the second round in the Orange League Champion match. During the battle with Squirtle, Drake's Onix dug underground and emerged to use Bind on Squirtle, but Squirtle used Withdraw followed by a Hydro Pump, soaking Drake's Onix into submission. After drenching Drake's Onix, Squirtle defeated the Onix with a Skull Bash.

Janina, Jasmine's apprentice, has an Onix in the episode Fight for the Light. Her Onix was heavily coated in wax for protection against Water attacks.

A "King Onix" was featured in Hooked on Onix. Team Rocket tricked King Onix into thinking Ash and co. were going to destroy his kingdom. When Ash managed to convince King Onix that he and his friends weren't bad by defeating it in a battle, Team Rocket tried to steal the royal Rock Snake Pokémon, but their plan was foiled, as usual.

Roark's Onix was first seen in Shapes of Things to Come where it was used against Paul's Paul and Paul. In A Gruff Act to Follow, it defeated Ash's Pikachu but Pikachu managed to defeat it in a rematch in O'er the Rampardos we Watched.

A rampaging Onix appeared in A Maze-ing Race!.

Brock used an Onix in One Team, Two Team, Red Team, Blue Team! as part of the Pokémon Triathlon.

An Onix appeared in DP110.

In the manga
Brock has an Onix in Pokémon Zensho, the Electric Tale of Pikachu, and Pocket Monsters.

In the Pokémon Special manga
Onix debuts in Onix is On! of the Red, Green & Blue chapter as Brock's main Pokémon, however a picture of it is showed on a leaflet in Wanted: Pikachu!. Onix later continues to make appearances with Brock in various volumes onwards.

Bruno owns an Onix, on which he battles Bill, Lt. Surge and Red on Cerise Island. The Onix later manages to carry Bruno and Koga off the collapsing island. Another wild Onix was also seen on Cerise Island.

In the TCG
Onix (TCG)

Other appearances
Super Smash Bros.
Onix is obtainable in a Poké Ball. Once thrown, it flies up into the sky and uses Rock Throw on the player's opponents. This will hit everyone on the field except Kirby if he uses his down special move.

Super Smash Bros. Melee
Onix is the second Poké Float to appear. It provides a horizontally flat area all the time it is on-screen, though it becomes diagonal as it leaves the screen.

Trivia
* In Generation I, Onix was the longest Pokémon, but in Generation II, it was dropped to second place by its evolution Steelix. When Wailord was introduced in Generation III, it became the third longest.
* In Pokémon yellow version, Onix is given the colour scheme that its shiny form has in future generations, this was however, before shiny colourations were introduced.
* Onix is the largest Pokémon that evolves once.
* Onix and Swablu are the only dual-typed Pokémon that have their primary type change during evolution.
* By being under the ownership of Bruno in Generation II, Onix is one of the few unevolved Pokémon that can evolve in the same generation as that of the Elite Four member to whom it belongs, the others being Dragonair, Shelgon, Haunter and Sealeo. However, it's the only one where the Elite Four member doesn't own its evolved form.
* Onix, along with its Steelix, are the only non-Dragon Pokémon to learn DragonBreath by leveling up.
* Onix's Sugimori artwork is similar to its Japanese Red and Green sprite.
Origin
Onix is most likely based on a snake.
Name origin
Onix's name is a corruption of onyx, a mineral. Its Japanese name may be a combination of 岩 iwa, rock, and スネ−ク snake.

It has been suggested that Onix is based on a European dragon, a type of dragon that has been presented as limbless and burrowing.
However, Onix was unable to learn DragonBreath until Generation III.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology
Physiology
Cresselia has a blue, swan-like body with a yellow underside, and two magenta tufts that form an arc across her chest. The yellow ornaments on the sides of her head give her head the appearance of a crescent moon. Cresselia also has glowing, pink, ring-like wings on her sides and back with paw like protrusions resting on Cresselia's chest.

Gender differences
Cresselia is a female-only species.

Special abilities
Cresselia has the power to dispel the nightmares induced by Darkrai, and in return induce pleasant dreams. She can also heal psychological scars if the sufferer looks at her. Some fans say Cresselia is the "Sandman" of the Pokémon world.

Cresselia have very high defensive stats and HP.

Cresselia is the only known Pokémon that learns Lunar Dance.

Behavior
She appears to be gentle, worrying for the ill and giving peace to those tormented by Darkrai.
In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2, her opposition to Darkrai becomes clearly evident, with the story showing scenes of Cresselia chasing it.

Habitat
Cresselia lives at Fullmoon Island.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Cresselia appears on the Spear Pillar stage as one of three Pokémon who appear in the center (the others being Dialga and Palkia). Cresselia acts completely different than the other two in terms of attacks she uses. She'll often shoot Psycho Cuts around the field, and sometimes shoot one large Psycho Cut as if it were a boomerang, hitting anyone that touches it.

Game data
NPC appearances
* Pokémon Mystery Dungeon 2: Cresselia has made it her mission to foil Darkrai's plot of plunging everyone in the world into an endless nightmare. After healing Azurill of its nightmare, she joins the player's team as a guest in Dark Crater. After defeating Darkrai, Cresselia will offer to officially join the team.

Trivia
* When Cresselia is encountered, the music is the same as an ordinary wild Pokémon, instead of a legendary Pokémon theme. She shares this trait with Shaymin, Latias, and Latios.
* Cresselia can be seen as an opposite of Darkrai, as Darkrai causes nightmares, where Cresselia prevents them. Also, their islands are shaped and named opposite of each other, and their types are frequently known as opposites.
** Furthermore, in the TCG, one of the attacks on Darkrai 3/106 of Great Encounters, Darkness Pursuit, has a base damage of 100 if Cresselia is the opposing Pokémon. Otherwise, it deals 50 damage.
* Cresselia is one of three legendary Pokémon that has a definite gender.
* Tower Tycoon Palmer, Cheryl and Buck all own a Cresselia; they use these at the Battle Tower.
* Cresselia is the last Psychic Pokémon in National Dex order as of Generation IV.
* Cresselia's three main colors (pink, yellow and blue) are the same as the main colors of the Lake trio.
* Cresselia is the second Pokémon with information about it relating it to an aurora, the first being Deoxys.
** In Deoxys's case, it can project aurora-like light patterns, as shown in Destiny Deoxys, while in Cresselia's case, it can release aurora-like particles from its tail, and can learn Aurora Beam.

Origin
Cresselia is based after a swan with features of heavenly bodies such as a crescent moon-shaped head and rings like Saturn's around its body.

Cresselia shares characteristics with Sarimanok, a colorful being from Philippine mythology and a number of moon gods and goddesses in African mythology such as Thoth, the Egyptian god of magic.

Name origin
Her name is derived from Lunar phase, referring to a phase of the moon. The selia in her name may be derived from Selene, the Greek goddess of the Moon.
