== Synopsis ==
Finally in [[Pacifidlog Town]], May enthusiastically prepares for the upcoming {{pkmn|Contest}}. Though she already has four ribbons, she needs a fifth to enter the [[Grand Festival]]. Because the [[Pacifidlog Town]] [[Pokémon Contest]] is chronologically the last contest before the Festival, May must win this contest ribbon to be eligible to enter the festival. With that as motivation, May and her Pokémon are soon hard at work on their performance moves -- with one notable exception. When {{TP|May|Skitty}} chases after an Aipom, May runs into fellow coordinator [[Joshua (coordinator)|Joshua]].

Meanwhile, Ash is motivated by all of May's hard work to start training for the Hoenn League Championship, itself not far off. He calls out {{AP|Snorunt}} to work on {{m|Ice Beam}}, which proves difficult for the playful Pokémon at first. Snorunt has soon mastered the force behind the technique but has no control over it. Nearby, Team Rocket loses no time in making an attempt on Pikachu (an impromptu spring from nearby bushes), which is cut short as a rogue Ice Bean freezes them solid. Snorunt looses several more unaimed beams, causing chaos with nearby trainers.

Elsewhere, May and Joshua had become acquainted. Joshua, a Pacificlog Town native, has entered the Pokémon contest and is apparently a local favorite. However, as May and Joshua chat, [[Erica]] (Joshua's girlfriend and yet another coordinator) wrongly concludes that May is after Joshua romantically. As Erica watches and fumes from a distance, May reveals that she has not yet chosen a Pokémon for the contest. As Joshua comments that she should consider her Skitty, Joshua comments that her Skitty "is so cute," which finally compels Erica to show herself. As Erica puts forth several accusations against May, she explains her master plan to go to the contest finals with Joshua (which somehow involves them winning the contest together) and reveals her contest Pokémon, Jynx. Eventually, Ash, Brock, and Max find May, and the trio of coordinators go to register at the contest together.

On the way, Team Rocket has apparently regrouped and launches a balloon-born assault on the party -- however, May's {{TP|May|Combusken}} quickly dismisses the balloon with a {{m|Sky Uppercut}} and Joshua's {{p|Houndoom}} rebukes Team Rocket's ragtag offensive. The addition of Skitty's {{m|Assist}} and Jynx's {{m|Hyperbeam}} send Team Rocket blasting off. May and Erica begin arguing over the battle, but Joshua points out that if they keep fighting, they will miss the contest registration. May and Erica agree to resolve their argument on the contest floor. Meanwhile, Team Rocket has landed and Jessie and Meowth enter the contest in the persona of "The Jester". Ash resolves to keep training with Snorunt outside of the contest hall, leaving Brock and Max to root for May.

Jessie ("The Jester") and Meowth use {{m|Fury Swipes}} to carve out ice sculptures in the preliminary rounds, while Joshua uses his Houndoom's {{m|Shadow Ball}} and {{m|Swift}} for sensational effect. Erica's Jynx combines {{m|Blizzard}} and {{m|Psychic}} while May combines a {{m|Razor Leaf}}-spawned {{m|Assist}}, a {{m|Blizzard}}, and {{m|Double Slap}} to shower the hall in sparkling crystal. All four trainers advance to the second round. May is assigned to fight Joshua, and Erica squares off against Jessie.

== Synopsis ==
The episode begins with Ash in the middle of his battle for his eighth [[Hoenn League]] badge at the [[Sootopolis Gym]]. The battle is in the first match of the second round, and {{p|Grovyle}} has just been hit by Juan's {{p|Luvdisc}}'s {{m|Sweet Kiss}} -- and Grovyle becomes confused. Ash orders Grovyle to move, who instead begins bashing its head into a nearby pillar. Brock warns Ash that he needs to call back Grovyle, but Ash isn't quick enough -- Grovyle is defeated by a timely {{m|Water Gun}} from Luvdisc. After Grovyle faints, Ash chooses {{AP|Corphish}} (tired from fighting during the first round) to replace it.

Meanwhile, elsewhere in Sootopolis City, Team Rocket has disguised James as Juan and are selling tickets to a "performance" of his. However, they are not meeting which much success, because the local paper announced that Juan is supposed to be in a Gym Battle (and indeed the real Juan is). However, the disguised James claims that he defeated Ash so quickly he has extra time to do a water illusion show. Unfortunately for Team Rocket, James' adept lying doesn't compensate for his poor performing ability. Team Rocket decides to sell autographs and photos after the show to compensate for their failure. However, Team Rocket is soon found out, and Team Rocket is sent flying but an angry fan's {{p|Blastoise}}.

Back at the Gym, Ash orders Corphish to open with a {{m|Bubble Beam}}, which Luvdisc deftly dodges and counters with a {{m|Water Gun}}. Though Corphish is hit by the Water Gun, it dodges the successive Sweet Kiss and counters with another Bubble Beam. Luvdisc easily dodges this attack as well and dives. Ash orders Corphish to use {{m|Crabhammer}} on the top of the water, which acts like a depth charge and knocks Luvdisc up out of the water. However, Luvdisc eludes Corphish's {{m|ViceGrip}} and uses Swift Swim, which has taken effect because Corphish's Crabhammer created "rain" by spraying water. Though Luvdisc attacks Corphish with another Water Gun, Corphish manages to dodge and suppress the mist with Bubble Beam, which disables Swift Swim. Corphish hits Luvdisc with a Crabhammer, knocking it out. For the second battle of the round, Juan calls out his {{p|Whiscash}}. Corphish attacks Whiscash with Bubble Beam, which Whiscash dodges with {{m|Surf}} and counters with {{m|Rock Smash}}. Rock Smash flattens Corphish and renders it unable to battle. Ash calls out {{p|Swellow}} next, and starts the battle with a {{m|Quick Attack}}. However, Swellow is almost immediately grabbed by Whiscash's antennae, which Juan uses to deliver a {{m|Tickle}} attack, followed by a {{m|Hyper Beam}}. Despite a direct hit and extreme damage, Swellow is still able to battle and counters with {{m|Aerial Ace}}, which hits a submerged Whiscash. Whiscash uses Hyper Beam in mid-air, but Swellow is able to dodge and use another Quick Attack followed by another Aerial Ace. Aerial Ace hits Whiscash just before it hits the water (for some reason, there is an explosion) and Whiscash is rendered unable to battle. This leaves only one Pokémon left for Juan. However, as Brock is quick to remind the group, both Swellow and Pikachu are tired from battle, whereas Juan's final Pokémon is fresh.

As expected, Juan calls out his {{p|Milotic}}, his strongest Pokémon. Milotic opens with {{m|Hydro Pump}}, which Swellow dodges with Aerial Ace and strike Milotic head on. Milotic recovers and counters with {{m|Iron Tail}}, which Swellow dodges with {{m|Double Team}}. To clear the decoys, Milotic uses {{m|Twister}}, which hits all of the images and renders Swellow unable to battle. Ash is now left with only one Pokémon -- Pikachu. Ash uses the dubious reasoning that Milotic will block any electric attacks he cares to use, so he should start with the most powerful attack at his disposal: Pikachu's {{m|Thunder}}. Milotic takes the attack head on, but Juan does not seem concerned. Moments later, Milotic uses {{m|Recover}}, effectively negating the damage. Juan comments that Milotic learned this tactic during their days in the Pokémon contest, when a pristine appearance is important no matter what phase of the competition one is at. Pikachu and Milotic exchange Iron Tail attacks, with the exchange ending badly for Pikachu. Milotic also uses {{m|Twister}}, which catches Pikachu. However, Pikachu destroys the Twister with another Thunder attack and counters with a Quick Attack. Though Pikachu hits, Milotic quickly counters with a {{m|Hydro Pump}}, which Pikachu dodges and counters with a {{m|Thunderbolt}}. Sadly, Milotic is simply able to take the Thunderbolt and Recover from it, leaving Ash not much better off. Milotec uses {{m|Dive}}, surfaces, and uses Iron Tail and Hydro Pump (both of which Pikachu dodges). Pikachu grabs Milotec and flips it into the water and then uses Thunder yet again. The room shakes. After a brief explosion, Milotic and Pikachu surface -- Pikachu still standing, but Milotic in a dead faint. Ash is declared the winner, and Brock explains that because water conducts electricity better than air, a direct attack underwater was even more effective.

Juan congratulates Ash on turning an almost certain defeat into victory, and gives him a [[Rain Badge]] as proof of his victory at the Sootopolis Gym. This leaves Ash with all eight badges necessary to enter the Hoenn League Championship. Juan congratulates Ash on his victory, and Sebastian informs Ash that the next championship is in three months at [[Ever Grande City]]. In the mean time, Juan tells May about a contest in [[Pacifidlog Town]], where the group will head next.

== Synopsis ==
The episode opens with Ash standing expectantly on the prow of a small motor boat. As the narrator explains, after a long trip Ash and company have finally arrived in [[Sootopolis City]], the site of the eight and final [[Hoenn League]] gym. After planting his feet on dry land, Ash immediately and enthusiastically declares that it's time to challenge the [[Sootopolis Gym]]. Unfortunately for Ash, May and Max spot a nearby fireworks display and run off to watch it, with Brock close in the tow. Though Ash is disappointed, he reluctantly follows them. Max and May trace the fireworks to above Sootopolis City's brand new water-themed theatre, where the city's mayor and the Sootopolis Gym Leader, [[Juan]], are busy commemorating the building. In honor of the occasion, Juan calls out his Pokémon, including among many others {{p|Milotic}}, {{p|Sealeo}}, {{p|Seaking}}, and {{p|Luvdisc}} to put on a performance for the crowd. May admires the artistry with his Pokémon take the stage, and comments that Juan could have been a great Coordinator.

Unfortunately, before the show can progress much further, the distinct ring of a {{p|Chimecho}} interrupts Juan's speech. He looks up for the source -- and, as it should so happen, none other than Team Rocket have arrived on the scene. Though Juan mistakenly assumes that they must be artists (given the beautiful voice of Jame's Chimecho), Ash and company soon clarify the situation for the Sootopolis Gym Leader. Team Rocket drops an electrified net from their balloon to ensnare and steal Juan's water-typed Pokémon. Ash offers to help Juan out of this sticky situation, but the Gym Leader refuses the aid, instead allowing his {{p|Gorebyss}} to use {{m|Safeguard}}, {{p|Barboach}} to use {{m|Mud Sport}}, and {{p|Tentacruel}} to use {{m|Mirror Coat}}, effectively countering the net's electric shock. Juan has Milotec break the net with {{m|Iron Tail}} and send Team Rocket blasting off with {{m|Twister}}, cutting the would-be theft short. When Juan thanks Ash and company for warning him, Ash challenges Juan to a Gym Battle on the spot. Juan accepts the challenge without hesitation.

After the performance and on the way to the battle, Ash and friends sit down with Juan for a cup of tea. May comments that in watching Juan's performance she felt like she was watching a Pokémon contest. Juan explains that he was a Coordinator before he became a Gym Leader. Juan reveals that he even won himself won a Ribbon Cup, the ultimate prize of the Grand Festival. Everyone present is extremely impressed, and Ash realizes he is facing a formidable opponent with experience from many different fields. Meanwhile, Juan reveals that his style of battling focuses on artistry and that he actually enjoys the water-Pokémon weakness against electric attacks because he enjoys tough challenges. When Max comments that Juan will be tough to beat, Ash cryptically responds that he has "a few 'ideals'" up his sleeve.

Ash and company arrive at the Sootopolis Gym and meet the butler and judge, {{ho|Sebastian}} who reveals the Sootopolis battlefield to be a large swimming pool. Sebastian further explains the complicated rules of the Gym -- the battle is 5 on 5, with the first round being a double battle, the second round being a series of three one-on-one battles. Brock explains that this gym is probably designed to test the challenger's ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Juan chooses {{p|Sealeo}} and {{p|Seaking}} to start the first round, while Ash begins his battle with {{AP|Pikachu}} and {{AP|Snorunt}}. Pikachu begins the round with a {{m|Thunderbolt}} against Sealeo. Juan uses Seaking's {{m|Horn Drill}} to deflect the Thunderbolt back against Snorunt, which takes the Thunderbolt directly. Ash directs a {{m|Thunder}} attach from Pikachu, which Seaking again deflects with its Horn Drill. Pikachu defends Snorunt and takes the brunt of the deflected Thunder attack. Juan then orders a {{m|Blizzard}} attack from Sealeo. Ash has Snorunt retaliate with {{m|Icy Wind}}, somehow freezing the Blizzard into a ball of ice. Juan's Pokémon destroy the frozen ball, but Ash takes advantage of situation by order his Pokémon to leap across the trail of ice fragments. Pikachu closes with {{m|Iron Tail}} while Snorunt attacks with {{m|Headbutt}}. Juan counters with the much more powerful {{m|Aurora Beam}} and {{m|Hyper Beam}}. While Pikachu is able to break off its attack in time to dodge, Snorunt is hit by the Hyper Beam and faints. Ash calls out {{AP|Corphish}} to replace Snorunt. Corphish opens with a {{m|Bubble Beam}}, which Sealeo dodges by diving. Juan uses this opportunity to mount an underwater attack against Ash's Pokémon. Corphish is able to grab Seaking by the horn before it can attack, but Juan orders Seaking to use Horn Drill, which sends Corphish flying. Pikachu successfully uses Iron Tail on Seaking and narrowly dodges an Aurora Beam from Sealeo. Pikachu's attack leaves Seaking unable to battle.

Pikachu reappears a moment later "surfing" on Corphish. Juan orders several {{m|Ice Ball}}s, which Ash initially deflects with Corphish's {{m|Harden}} and {{m|ViceGrip}} and Pikachu's Iron Tail. Ash knows that Ice Ball becomes more powerful and takes longer to launch every time and so plans to move in the gap after the third ice ball. However, Sealeo launches the third ball extremely quickly and hits both Pikachu and Corphish. Juan orders a fifth Ice Ball as a coup de'grace, which Pikachu destroys with Thunder. As the shards of ice rain down on Sealeo, Corphish moves in with {{m|Crabhammer}}, which leaves Sealeo unable to battle. The Gym Match advances to the second round, with the field changing to a lake with several towers and more land. Meanwhile, elsewhere, Team Rocket is planning to disguise James as Juan...

Ash calls out his {{p|Grovyle}} and Juan chooses his {{p|Luvdisc}}. Grovyle immediately uses {{m|Bullet Seed}}, which Luvdisc dodges and counters with {{m|Water Pulse}}. Grovyle dodges and moves in with {{m|Leaf Blade}}, which Luvdisc then dodges and counters with {{m|Sweet Kiss}}. Grovyle is hit, and the episode ends with the effects of the Sweet Kiss still in question, and Ash's eighth and final Hoenn gym battle hinging on its effects.

== Synopsis ==
The episode opens with Ash and friends crossing a rickety bridge to reach a nearby town. As {{AP|Pikachu}} eagerly crosses the old wooden bridge, the planks break under the small Pokémon's weight, and Pikachus nearly plummets into the river! However, with a feat of acrobatics, Pikachu manages to leap from the dangerous bridge onto Ash's head. As Ash recovers from the blow, he looks up and an {{p|Absol}} -- a Pokémon known for heralding disaster -- is standing just on the other side of the broken bridge! As Ash postulates that Absol's appearance is related to the destruction of the bridge, two armed villagers approach the Absol and begin to shout angrily at the Pokémon, claiming it's "another bridge" that Absol has destroyed. Absol evades capture easily, and Ash and company leave for the nearby town to inquire about Absol further. Apparently, a spate of minor disasters, including the destruction of three bridges, started with Absol's appearance several months ago. The villagers say that their problems should soon be over, though, because they've hired "expert Absol hunters" (Team Rocket in disguise with ridiculous accents) to rid the village of their problems. Meanwhile, Team Rocket decides to capture Pikachu instead of Absol (reasoning that giving Absol to the boss would result in disasters for them).

Right before Team Rocket is about to leave with Ash, though, a boy, [[Nikki]] appears and shouts at Team Rocket, claiming that Absol would never be caught by their likes. It's soon revealed that Nikki's elder brother {{ho|Gordon}}, had left town to catch an Absol because Gordon didn't believe that Absol caused disasters. Nikki reasons that if his brother can't catch an Absol, then Team Rocket can't either. While Team Rocket leaves on their hunt, Nikki, Ash, and company leave for a nearby mountain-top -- reasoning that from a higher vantage point they would have a better chance of catching Absol. However, just as the party passes some mysterious water-filled rocks, Absol finds them. As Absol advances on Max and Nikki, Pikachu cautions Absol with a {{m|Thunderbolt}}. The two Pokémon reach a standoff... but just moments later, a flood of water erupts from the rocks behind them! Max, Nikki, Pikachu, and Absol are swept away by the flood, and the former three are caught on a branch over the side of the cliff. Nikki loses his grip and begins to fall, but Absol leaps to save him -- convincing all present that Absol is a kind-hearted Pokémon. Team Rocket also observes these events from afar.

Just as the gang realizes that Absol isn't causing the disasters, the branch holding Max and Pikachu breaks. Ash calls out {{AP|Swellow}} who saves Max, but Pikachu is rescued by a mysterious {{p|Heracross}} -- a Heracross which turns out to belong to Nikki's older brother, Gordon. Gordon explains that he's been tracking groups of Absol in other mountains to better understand them after saving the life of the wild Absol in his village's mountain. Gordon also explains that from his research, Absol only approach human settlements with good reason, that they don't actually cause disasters but often take the blame, and don't attack unless provoked. After some thinking, Brock realizes that the water pressure in the mountain's spring is building -- and Absol has been trying to warn everyone that the village will soon be flooded (the increased water flow destroyed the bridges). No sooner has Brock made this realization than a geyser of water erupts out of the side of the mountain -- threatening to destroy Gordon's village. Absol trys to knock over a giant boulder to block the water's path, and everyone present calls out their Pokémon to help, but the boulder doesn't budge. Absol moves in to point blank range with its {{m|Hyperbeam}} and successfully diverts the boulder and the water flow, soaking Team Rocket in the process and washing away their ridiculous disguises. Absol, however, knocks Team Rocket away with {{m|Razor Wind}} before they can even make an attempt to capture Pikachu. As the episode ends, the villagers are left with the realization that Absol has the power to predict disasters -- not to cause them -- and that Absol is in fact a good Pokémon.

The group go travel through some underground caves containing a number of Trapinch and, reportedly, a beautiful lake.

== Synopsis ==
As the episode opens, our group is feeling a little lost on [[Izabe Island]] -- they're out of PokéNav range and Brock can't find an appropriate map. To make matters worse, the island is a large desert full of craters of some kind. {{Ash}} speculates that their might be something in them and throws a rock into the nearest crater. A strange orange head pops out and swallows the rock. Ash checks the [[Pokédex]] about it. The Pokédex reveals that it's a {{P|Trapinch}}, a burrowing desert Pokémon with powerful jaws capable of eating sand and rock. The group realizes that the craters are made by Trapinch.
Not long after, [[Pokémon Ranger|Elisa]], a local ranger, comes in her car and tells the crew that they are trespassing in a dangerous area. While [[Max]] restrains [[Brock]], {{an|May}} explains that they didn't know the area was restricted. Shortly after commenting that the region doesn't look dangerous, Ash loses his footing and falls in a crater. Elisa saves him by throwing a [[Escape Rope|rope]]. She explains to the group that there is an underground tunnel network known as ˝The Trapinch Underground Labyrinth˝ linking all of the craters, and that they should do everything possible to avoid falling in.
Elisa starts to drive the group to safety, but they soon encounter a strange man running from a charging {{P|Donphan}}. Elisa says ˝not again˝ and calls out her {{P|Meganium}}, which releases [[Sweet Scent (move)|scent]] from its petals, calming the Donphan. The unknown man thanks Elisa for saving him "again". Elisa quickly introduces the man as {{ho|Hal}}, an accident-prone researcher.

Hal explains that he is looking for a Trapinch with a transmitter on its back, which he's using to search for a secret underground lake in ˝The {{P|Trapinch}} Labyrinth˝. Hal tells them the story from his youth, claiming that he discovered the lake when he was lost in labyrinth himself. While trying to find a way out of the maze, he lost consciousness. When Hal woke up he saw a huge, beautiful lake with many Trapinch gathered around it. All of the Trapinch [[Evolution|evolved]] into {{P|Vibrava}} at the same time before leaving. Without explanation, Hal all of a sudden found himself back outside of the labyrinth. That's why he started his career as a [[Pokémon Researcher]]. The group spots the transmitter-laden Trapinch heading into a crater.

Meanwhile, [[Team Rocket]] watches the group from underground and decide (predictably) to steal Pikachu. They plan to surprise the group from underneath with their {{P|Diglett}} machine and grab {{AP|Pikachu}} (and they execute this part of the plan quite successfully). Ash tells Pikachu to use {{m|Thunderbolt}}, but the Team Rocket machine is insulated against electrical attack. [[Brock]] calls out his {{TP|Brock|Ludicolo}} and orders it to use {{m|Water Gun}}. The force of the attack forces the Diglett into one of the craters and many Trapinch start [[Bite (move)|Biting]] it, quickly reducing it to scrap metal. Team Rocket and Pikachu fall through the mud at the bottom of the hole. Ash goes to save Pikachu, and Elisa goes with him, with The transmitter Trapinch not far behind. Team Rocket, Ash's Pikachu, Ash with Elisa and Trapinch, all fall to different parts of the labyrinth. The rest of the group and Hal use the Trapinch's transmitter to track them -- luckily Ash doesn't want to leave the labyrinth without Pikachu, so he and Elisa do follow the transmitter Trapinch.

Elsewhere, Team Rocket encounters a Trapinch and they decide to catch it for [[Giovanni]]. {{MTR}} thinks that the Trapinch could crack walnuts for him. While they think about it, Trapinch saunters away -- but Team Rocket spots Hal and decide to follow him. Meanwhile, Max, May, and Brock fall just in front of Ash and Elisa. Soonafter, water from an unknown source begins to flood the tunnel -- the group runs for their lives and they end up in a lake that Hal was talking about with Pikachu. The transmitter Trapinch and Hal arrive soon thereafter. Many Trapinch, including the transmitter one, assemble around the lakeside and evolve. As the Vibrava fly off, Team Rocket makes their next greedy move and captures them in a large balloon-based net. Brock calls out his Ludicolo, and Elisa calls her Meganium. Ludicolo uses {{m|Bullet Seed}} and Meganium uses {{m|Razor Leaf}} to set the Vibrava free. [[Jessie]] tells her {{TP|Jessie|Dustox}} to use {{m|Poison Sting}} and [[James]] tells his {{TP|James|Cacnea}} to use {{m|Pin Missile}}. The Vibrava defend the group with {{m|Supersonic}}. With a burst from Pikachu, Team Rocket blasts off again, and the Vibrava airlift the group out of the deep cavern. At the end of the episode, Hal resolves to keep the underground lake a secret, revealing he only wanted to find it so Elisa would believe his story.

== Synopsis ==
Excited about winning his {{Badge|Boulder}}, {{Ash}} couldn't wait to get to [[Cerulean City]] to battle for his {{Badge|Cascade}}. For some reason, though, [[Misty]] was trying to avoid entering Cerulean and tried to convince them to go to [[Vermilion City]] but failed, she then left Ash and [[Brock]] as they entered the city.

When Ash and Brock entered the city, they saw a big crowd of people in a circle surrounding a building. When they got to the front they saw [[Officer Jenny]], and she accused Ash and Brock of being the criminals. When they proved their innocence, she let them go, and sent the rest of the crowd away. After that, they sat on a bench and Ash asked Brock for inside information on the [[Gym Leader]]. Brock telling him that as a Gym Leader, too, and he cannot give out that information. Then Brock said to him "I have to take care of some business in town". They split up and Ash headed to the [[Cerulean Gym]] while Brock did his own thing.

When Ash got to the gym, he found three sisters performing underwater. Ash confronted the girls backstage, found out that they are the Gym Leaders and challenged them to a battle. The girls ({{ka|Lily}}, {{an|Daisy}} and [[Violet]]) explained that their Pokémon are too tired to battle, and offered Ash the badge without a battle. Ash was about to take it, when Misty appeared and challenges him.

It turned out that Misty is the youngest of [[Sensational Sisters]], but they called her "the runt". After Misty argues with her sisters, she challenged Ash to an official Cerulean Gym battle with rules of 2 on 2. Ash tried to send out {{AP|Pikachu}} but he refused to go into battle because he didn't want to hurt Misty or her Pokémon. So instead Ash sent out {{AP|Butterfree}} to battle Misty's {{p|Staryu}}. After a quick battle, Butterfree got knocked into the water causing it to lose the battle. After that Misty sent out {{TP|Misty|Starmie}} and Ash sent out {{AP|Pidgeotto}}. Just as Ash is about to win the battle [[Team Rocket]] interrupts and tried to steal all the Water Pokémon and the water from the Gym.

While Team Rocket was stealing all the Water Pokémon by using a vacuum machine, Pikachu got sucked in as well. He released a {{m|Thunderbolt}} causing the machine to explode, sending Team Rocket flying. After Team Rocket is gone, Daisy gave Ash the {{badge|Cascade}}. Misty tried to argue but her sisters convinced her that if Ash used Pikachu from the start, he would have beaten all her water Pokémon. Misty agreed with her sisters and claimed that when she comes back from her journey with Ash she would be a great Trainer. Brock then meets Ash outside of the gym and together they headed for Vermilion City

==Synopsis==
The episode opens with {{Ash}} and {{Ashfr|his friends}} running to catch the boat to [[Mossdeep City|Mossdeep Island]], where Ash's next gym battle awaits. Unfortunately, in their haste to catch the ferry, the part gets aboard the wrong boat! On board, Brock and Max reveal that they've boarded the ship to [[Bomba Island]], and unfortunately, there's no direct ferry from Bomba Island to Mossdeep Island. While discussing their island-hopping adventure, an {{p|Ivysaur}}, {{p|Charmeleon}}, and {{p|Wartortle}} pass the group by, with each Pokémon carrying a heavy box. {{an|May}} misidentifies each (as a {{p|Venusaur}}, {{p|Charmander}}, and {{p|Squirtle}} respectively) but[[Max]] and the rest of the group set her straight. Ash then explains that they are the evolutions of {{p|Bulbasaur}}, {{p|Charmander}}, and {{p|Squirtle}}, the starter Pokémon of [[Pallet Town]]. The group also quickly bumps into {{ho|Jimmy}}, the three Pokémon's trainer, and himself a referee in training. After helping Jimmy shift a few boxes, Jimmy explains that there's a major Pokémon Battle Judging school on the island, and Ash and friends are eager to take a look around the institute. The institute's teacher, [[Serena]] is quick to enlist Ash and company to help teach some trainees by holding a mock battle. Meanwhile, Team Rocket has managed the group follow them using their {{p|Magikarp}} submarine, and the trio plot to steal Jimmy's three Pokémon.

Ash and [[Brock]] face off in the institute mock battle with Jimmy judging, with Ash choosing his {{AP|Swellow}} and {{AP|Corphish}} and Brock using his [[Brock's Lombre]] and [[Brock's Mudkip]]. After a few brief exchanges, Ash manages to back the opposing Lombre into a vulnerable position. As this is a battle to test the judges more than the trainers, though, Brock has his Lombre play dead rather than reposition itself, meaning that it appears unable to battle. While Jimmy wonders if he should call the match, Ash orders {{AP|Swellow}} to do an {{m|Aerial Ace}} attack. Lombre, however, springs back up at the last moment! Unfortunately for Brock, his sneak attack fails to knock out Swellow. Brock orders a double {{m|Water gun}} against Swellow to finish the fight, but Ash orders Corphish to shield Swellow from the blow. Corphish initially buckles beneath the force of the attack, and Jimmy decides to call Corphish unable to battle. However, his amateur judgment is also premature and Corphish springs back up moments later. The teacher, [[Serena]], scolds Jimmy quite forcefully. She goes on to say that he's still studying and will make mistakes sometimes, and this is the time to make mistakes. Also, whether right or wrong, a referee must appear confident.

After night falls, Jimmy sits outside with Pokémon, brooding over his mistakes earlier in the day. Ash and friends go out to find Jimmy, Jimmy tells them his whole story, including how he got his three Pokémon. He tells them that Wartortle, who was a Squirtle, was his starter. He got Ivysaur by accidentally giving it a sandwich. Finally, he traded a gold Magikarp to someone for his Charmeleon. He also shows them his only badge, a {{Badge|Cascade}}, and Ash tells him that he must be a pretty good trainer. Jimmy then explains that this was given to him by {{an|Daisy}} for cleaning the Gym and pool; the Gym Leader, [[Misty]], was away when he visited [[Cerulean City]] (see trivia below). Jimmy tells Ash the he has had a long streak of bad luck, and came to the judging academy by accident.

Meanwhile, in the distance, a rather obvious [[Team Rocket's Mechas|Team Rocket mecha]] drives up on the beach, with the villainous trio hellbent on capturing Jimmy's three Pokémon. The mecha that Team Rocket is using has three Poké Ball shaped prisons, each of which steal and hold one of Jimmy's Pokémon. Jimmy gives chase. Somehow, Jimmy gets atop the mecha and tries to free his Pokémon with a sharp rock. But he is easily knocked off the mecha. Jimmy becomes disheartened, but [[Serena]] gives his a speech about his good heart, which renews his faith. Meanwhile, his Pokémon are trying to free themselves from their [[Poké Ball]]s. Wartortle evolves into {{p|Blastoise}} in anger and is able to break free from the small containment chamber. The other two are also released by Blastoise using {{m|Hydro Pump}}. The three then use a combination of {{m|Razor Leaf}}, {{m|Flamethrower}} and {{m|Hydro Pump}} to send Team Rocket blasting off. Serena tells Jimmy he should become a trainer, not a judge, and Jimmy then decides to return to Lilycove City. Ash and his friends hire a boat and get back on course to their next city of choice (and Gym [[Badge]], in Ash's case).

== Synopsis ==
The episode opens with Ash admiring his new Feather Badge, a hard-won trophy from his battle with [[Winona]] at the [[Fortree City]] gym. With six badges, Ash now needs only two more to enter the [[Hoenn League]]. Ash triumphantly declares that they're heading to gym battle number seven, before Max points out that Ash has no idea what or where that gym is. After consulting his guide, Brock announces that they're now on their way to [[Mossdeep City]], which they will reach by way of ferry in [[Lilycove City]]. On the way, they encounter Elijah, whose heavily burdened [[Camerupt]] has gotten stuck in the river. With the help of Ash and friends, Camerupt is soon across the river. When Max asks what his Camerupt is carrying, Elijah reveals that he runs a portable movie theater, with all of the equipment stored on his companion's back. Since Elijah and the gang are going in the same direction, they decide to travel together.

Meanwhile, Ash is being shadowed by Team Rocket, who are looking to capture Pikachu as usual. Meowth, meanwhile, notices from on high that Camerupt is carrying movie equipment. For extremely dubious reasons, Meowth decides that Camerupt and the theater system would be perfect gifts for [[Giovanni]]. James and Jessie are less certain, but decide to go ahead with the scheme anyway. Team Rocket ambushes the Ash and company with a classic pitfall trap at the next river crossing. After cutting the motto short, they steal Camerupt and prepare to make their getaway. Ash is quick to call out his [Ash's Corphish|Corphish], which promptly frees Camerupt and sends Team Rocket blasting off with a [[Bubblebeam]]. With Team Rocket now temporarily indisposed, the group continues to a dangerous mountain path. While fantasizing about "May's Expedition", May herself nearly gets flattened by a boulder, which then blocks the narrow road. Unable to advance, the party camps for the night.

Over dinner, Elijah mentions that his work is very dangerous (and it's also revealed that he's unpaid!) but he does it anyway because he feels he has an obligation to those he entertains. Elijah also reveals a letter he got from a young girl, Maria, in a town without a movie theater which has reinforced his determination to continue his dangerous unpaid job. Ash, Brock, Max, and May reminisce about movies they saw before leaving on their journey. Elijah offers to read the group the narration of the new [[Plusle]] and [[Minun]] movie (it is a silent movie for reasons that aren't explained). The group reaches the town the following morning and the group resolves to stay in the town long enough to see the movie. The villagers happily greet Elijah as they arrive, and they meet Maria on the way in to town.

The movie starts later that night, with Elijah narrating (the movie is a slapstick comedy about a Princess' kidnapping and rescue). However, the movie is cut short by the intervention of Team Rocket, who appear from behind the screen, once again bent on stealing the movie equipment. Jessie calls out [[Jessie's Seviper|Seviper]] to use [[Haze]] and in the subsequent confusion steal the projector. Leaving Brock and [[Lombre]] to entertain the crowd, Ash, May, Max, and Elijah dart off to find Team Rocket. Finding a trail of film that Team Rocket dropped, they soon trace Team Rocket. [[Ash's Grovyle]] quickly sends Team Rocket flying and gets back the projector, and relieves Brock (who's been singing the only song he knows over and over again). The show goes on (and it's revealed Pikachu is a star), with even Team Rocket sneaking in to watch!

== Synopsis ==
The [[Winona|Fortree City Gym Leader]] and {{Ash}} take their places on an elevated balcony above the battlefield. Before the {{pkmn|battle}} commences, Winona says a type of prayer, asking for strength. It's a three-on-three battle and Winona starts off with {{p|Altaria}}, while Ash chooses {{AP|Grovyle}}.

{{an|May}}, who is on the sidelines with [[Brock]] and [[Max]], checks Altaria's data on the [[Pokédex]]. Altaria begins the battle with a {{m|Peck}} attack, but Grovyle counters with {{m|Bullet Seed}} and then jumps out of the way. Winona then commands Altaria to do another move, but Ash gets Grovyle to dodge it by climbing up a totem pole and doing a backflip.

[[Team Rocket]], meanwhile, are in some kind of tunnel, possibly under the battlefield itself. [[James]], however, doesn't understand why they're trying to get under the battlefield. {{MTR}} attempts to explain and pulls out a pair of dowsing rods. [[Jessie]] and James are confused by the rods, and fantasize about disco dancing with them, but Meowth tells them the rods are used to search for water. Jessie is skeptical but the rods turn and bend and point directly to...another tunnel. Convinced of the rods' usefulness, Jessie and James run off with them down the tunnel.

Meanwhile, Winona tells Altaria to use another attack but Grovyle doesn't seem too affected by it. Winona again commands Altaria to use the same attack, but Ash gets Grovyle to jump out of the way. Winona is concerned (and a little impressed) with Grovyle's {{stat|Speed}}. Grovyle then attacks with Bullet Seed again and hits Altaria on the back, with no ill effect. Altaria flies away.

Altaria tries the same move a third time but Grovyle again jumps out of the way and into the air, above Altaria. Ash sees his chance and orders Grovyle to use {{m|Leaf Blade}}. Altaria falls to the ground under the weight of Grovyle's attack. Grovyle is victorious!

Winona recalls Altaria and sends out {{p|Pelipper}}. Ash recalls Grovyle and uses {{AP|Pikachu}}. On the sidelines, Max points out that Pelipper is a hybrid {{2t|Water|Flying}} [[Elemental type|type]]. Brock adds that Pelipper has a 4x weakness against {{t|Electric}} moves, so this should be easy for Ash. Pikachu starts its match against Pelipper by using {{m|Thunderbolt}}. Pelipper counters with {{m|Steel Wing}} and accidentally touches the ground. Pelipper is grounded, and electricity doesn't affect it now.

The Thunderbolt attack discharges into the underground tunnels, including the one Jessie and James are in. The metal rod points up at the spot where Pelipper is grounded. Team Rocket is blasted off again and they land on the battlefield. They plot to catch Pikachu while it's distracted by the battle.

They state their modified {{TP|Team Rocket|motto|mottos}} and run for Pikachu. The dowsing rods they're holding again become lightning rods when Pikachu attacks. Jessie seems happy about that property of the rods. Winona orders Pelipper to use what appears to be {{m|Headbutt}}. Brock understands; the Steel Wing attack is grounding Pelipper, nullifying Pikachu's electrical attacks. Ash changes his strategy and orders Pikachu to use Quick Attack.

Pelipper is still grounded and Winona commands it to use {{m|Hydro Pump}}. The force of the attack causes Pelipper to de-ground itself and Ash sees a chance to use a {{m|Thunder}} attack on Pelipper. Both [[Pokémon]] are [[Unable to battle|knocked out]].

Winona makes a speech in between battles, telling Ash and the others of her love for the sky Winona then chooses {{TP|Winona|Swellow}}, an {{shiny2|alternate color}} Pokémon, as her final Pokémon, while Ash chooses Grovyle again. Ash commands Grovyle to use Leaf Blade. But Swellow is seemingly unscathed. Swellow is then ordered to use {{m|Aerial Ace}}. Ash uses the jump-and-Leaf-Blade combo again as a countermove, but Swellow dodges it. Grovyle is hit and is pinned down from the sky. The match is a tie.

Ash then chooses his {{AP|Swellow}} to battle. This battle, Swellow vs Swellow, takes the two Pokémon higher into the sky. Brock thinks that this is a bad idea. Winona orders an attack and Ash's Swellow is hit. It's apparent that when using {{m|Wing Attack}}, Swellow cannot actively stay in the air (i.e., hovering and unable to control movement). Winona orders her Swellow to repeatedly Peck Ash's Swellow. Then she orders a {{m|Hyper Beam}} attack, which Ash's Swellow dodges. However, she orders this attack a second time and it's a direct hit!

Ash counters with {{m|Quick Attack}} but Winona's Swellow is faster and dodges this attack, countering with Peck. The battle becomes an aerial chase between the two birds. Ash gets some inspiration when he sees the dust being stirred on the ground by Swellow's rapidly changing direction in midair close to the ground. Winona orders another Hyper Beam. Ash orders Swellow to rush towards the ground. Winona orders Swellow to use Aerial Ace. Ash commands his Swellow to use Wing Attack on the ground. The dust cloud that develops obscures the view of Winona's Swellow and slows it down. Ash takes advantage of the bird's disorientation and orders his Swellow to use Wing Attack. Winona's Swellow is knocked out, and Ash wins!

Max, Brock, and May comment on Ash's strategy. Winona presents the {{Badge|Feather}} to Ash against a beautiful sunset background.

== Synopsis ==

Ash and company are on the way to [[Fortree City]] in pursuit of Ash's next gym battle and badge. As the city comes into sight, Max notes that Fortree City has an abundance of treehouses, and Brock courteously explains that it's an old tradition in the city. Ash, on the other hand, isn't particularly interested in the trees and speeds off towards the gym. Upon arrival, Ash calls out that he's here for a battle, and he's greeted by the Fortree City Gym assistant, Zachary. Zachary informs Ash that the Gym Leader is in the village, and unfortunately she's busy with the Feather Carnival, a once-a-year celebration of the sky in the city. Of course, Ash races down to the square to find the Gym Leader. While looking around the square, Max spots a {{p|Skarmory}} flying with two people, a woman and young child, on its back.

While Ash and the gang move to track down the landing Skarmory, Team Rocket also arrives in Fortree City. [[Jessie]] and [[Meowth]] are perfectly happy to to be at a carnival, but James seems rather unhappy. When pushed, James regales them with a story from his youth -- when he was just a young boy he saw a rare [[Psychic]]-type [[Chimecho]], which he wanted very dearly. Unfortunately, his parents wouldn't let him have one, and by the time he escaped his home to find Chimecho himself, the carnival had packed up and left. James says that this incident left him a "hollow shell of a man", and bursts into tears. However, it turns out that Jessie and Meowth got bored and walked off while he was talking, despite his emotional display.

Back with Ash and company, the Skarmory has landed and its trainer is looking for another child to take on a Pokémon ride. As usual, Brock gets to her first, but Ash fights his way through the crowd and introduces himself to the pilot, [[Winona]]. They discover quickly that [[Winona]] is the Fortree Gym Leader, so Ash immediately challenges her. Winona accepts the challenge, but delays the match until after the festival. That leaves Ash and gang fairly idle for some time, so the company calls out their Pokémon to enjoy the carnival. May and Max even get a ride on Skarmory like the other children, their first experiences on a flying Pokémon. Brock and Ash watch from the ground, discussing a combination of local history and strategy for the upcoming match.

Meanwhile, Meowth and Jessie discuss James' story. Meowth remarks that while Chimecho isn't exactly a [[Legendary Pokémon]], it's a safe bet that they won't see one around. Ironically, at that very moment, a Chimecho floats by. Elsewhere, James walks off in huff because Jessie and Meowth ditched him. However, he passes a stand selling Chimecho-shaped bells and his anger is forgotten... and who would happen to be running this stand but our favorite swindler, the [[Magikarp Salesman]]. Still stinging from his run-in with this con-man in ''[[AG079|Pearls are a Spoink's Best Friend]'', James notices that the Salesman's "Chimecho" don't seem much like Chimecho, which is fairly obvious (the tape holding them together is showing). However, as usual, the Magikarp Salesman tells James that he's turned over a new leaf and begs his forgiveness, all the while trying to pawn off his fake Chimecho (which he gives to James for free, so it couldn't be that bad of a deal). James walks away happy, thinking that his new "Chimecho" will bring him success and happiness. Jessie and Meowth soon find James, and are quick to point out that it's not a Chimecho -- it's in fact a {{p|Hoppip}} painted like a Chimecho with a bell for a tail. However, just as Jessie and James begin to fight over the error (and Hoppip happily floats away), a real Chimecho floats by. James asks Chimecho if it would like come along with them, and Chimecho happily agrees.

Elsewhere, Zachary and Winona lead Ash to the Fortree city gym, an open arena on top of the gym itself, on level with the surrounding trees. Before Ash and Winona can start their battle, an explosion breaks out in the square below -- and explosion caused by Team Rocket and their new robot, a "Double Trouble Sparky Shocker" that uses electricity to disable and capture all of Fortree City's famous flying Pokémon. Winona and Skarmory immediately hit the robot with a [[Wing Attack]]. Team Rocket launches into their motto (joined by Chimecho), then the battle commences. Pikachu uses the usual [[Thunderbolt]] on Team Rocket, but Chimecho uses [[Heal Bell]], which restores Team Rocket. In mean time, Swellow flies in on attack run with Pikachu on its back, taking several electric attacks but persevering nonetheless. Swellow finally closes with a Wing Attack, but Team Rocket counters with another electric attack and capture Swellow and Pikachu. Skarmory, however, uses a [[Drill Peck]] attack to break the robot's cage and free the captured Pokémon. Skarmory Drill Pecks until again (with James refusing to force Chimecho to battle) and destroys the robot. Team Rocket blasts off, and the day is saved -- though the sun is going down. Ash and Winona agree to delay the battle until the following day. The day and the Festival end with a fireworks display and some formation flying, with Winona at the head.

== Synopsis ==
The episode opens not with Ash and Company but with Jessie, James, and Meowth, for another installation of the trials and tribulations of Team Rocket. Team Rocket report in to [[Giovanni|Giovanni]]. Though they don't have anything new to report, Giovanni becomes very angry with them because the secret base they were working on was destroyed in ''[[AG071|A Six Pack Attack!]]''. He says that they're failing their mission in the [[Hoenn|Hoenn Region]] which he has been funding, and if they don't improve, he'll send in [[Butch|Butch]] and [[Cassidy|Cassidy]] to finish the job instead.

Meanwhile, continuing the trek to [[Fortree City]], Ash and the gang come across a {{an|Spoink}}, a {{type2|Psychic}} Pokémon. Most Spoink use the Pearls on their heads to channel their formidable physic powers, but this Spoink is upset after losing its Pearl. Being the good samaritans that they are, the group decideds to help the distressed Spoink locate its lost pearl. Though they look hard for it, the Spoink tries to put any round objects it sees on its head, (including an {{p|Igglybuff}}, a {{p|Voltorb}}, and an {{p|Electrode}}). When the Pearl is found, however, Team Rocket, working with renewed vigor after Giovanni threatened to replace them, attack the group. Though they use a traditional pitfall trap, they introduce themselves as the "new Team Rocket" and say that they're going for a fresh start -- however, they end up blasting off as usual. This time, though, Meowth manages to grab the Spoink's pearl which blasts off with them. Ash and the gang soon notice the absence of the pearl and chase after Team Rocket.

After blasting off, Team Rocket comes across a fair, and Ash and company chase Team Rocket onto the fairgrounds, where they initially lose sight of each other. Spoink tries a few more round objects, like a juggler's balls and a fortune teller's crystal ball. Team Rocket, meanwhile is approached by the same [[Magikarp Salesman]] who has made James' life a misery in the past and offers to trade Feebas for the Pearl. Though James is wary of the known swindler, the Magikarp salesman reveals that {{p|Feebas}} evolves into {{p|Milotic}}, the most beautiful of all Pokémon, [[Jessie]] becomes dazzled by the possibilities. [[James]] and {{MTR}} are still reluctant and question the salesman on the source of his information, which he says he got from [[Professor Oak]] (the information on Feebas' evolution is accurate). He also regales them with a tale of his family life (he has many children to support, ect.) and that he has given up a life of crime. This story finally convince Team Rocket to make the trade.

Jessie is eager to get the Feebas to evolve, so they let their new Pokémon go for a swim in a nearby river. Soon, Feebas' color begins to change.. but with the glow of evolution. Feebas is just a Magikarp painted with a Feebas colors, revealing that they have been swindled yet again! Ash and company find Team Rocket at this point, who quickly explain what happened, and both groups head back to the fair to find the crooked salesman. When they find him, he's trying to sell "Feebas" to passersby, so [[Brock]] calls out [[Mudkip]] to use [[Water Gun]] on the "Feebas" which is quickly revealed to be a Magikarp beneath some paint. When the salesman tries to flee, Ash and company corner him and in the ensuing struggle, the pearl slips out of his bag. Team Rocket arrives only moments later and a battle ensues, but Spoint (reunited with its Pearl) uses its powerful physic attacks to blast off Team Rocket. During the commotion, the Magikarp Salesman escapes... to swindle another day. But as Ash remarks at the end, at least they found the pearl!

ThunderHawk2: Notes on May's mini-"Tragic Downfall"

==Tragic Downfall==

Though I wasn't bold enough to put it in the article, I think this is the first time May suffers from a "tragic downfall". Occasionally, to justify a main character's loss, the protagonist becomes extremely overconfident or otherwise filled with hubris, and I think we clearly saw that from May this episode (a sort of bastardized classical tragedy, the idea that if the main character suffers, he or she had better deserve it). It's happened before, to Ash in particular on several occasions. Well, you know the old saying: Pride cometh before the fall...

== Synopsis ==

It’s Contest Day in [[Rubello Town]] -- and the episode opens with Jessie being kicked out the Pokémon Contest for trying to enter with a fake, comically large ribbon -- quashing her dream of entering this Pokémon contest. Inside the contest center, {{an|May}} and [[Savannah|Savannah]] watch [[Vivian|Vivian]] kick off the festivities. May is as determined as ever to win, and with her victories in {{to|Fallarbor}} and [[Verdanturf Town]] she is extremely confident and calm, while Savannah is still suffering from a bad case of nerves. Drew is also waiting backstage, and he smirks as May gives advince to Savannah. Meanwhile, outside, a stranger asks if she can purchase Jessie's fake ribbon as a decoration for her [[Azurill|Azurill]]. Jessie gains a steely glint in her eye and what's worse -- an idea.

Back inside the competition center, May and [[May's Beautifly|Beautifly]] take the stage and open with a [[Morning Sun|Morning Sun]] technique, followed by [[Silver Wind|Silver Wind]]. The MFP cheer May on, and Savannah later complements May for her good work, remarking that she hopes she can do as well herself (scores at not shown). Savannah starts off to a rocky start, missing her cue, but she makes up for her mistake quickly. Savannah elects to start with her [[Flareon|Flareon]], which uses a [[Fire Spin|Fire Spin]] attack to create flaming hoops which it then tackles through. Savannah follows those theatrics with a combination [[Swift|Swift]] and [[Ember|Ember]], turing the Swift stars red. Offstage, Sandra claims that the maneuver was her idea. After Savannah yields the stage, May compliments her but remarks that after winning a few ribbons, winning becomes easy. Drew scoffs at her hubris, and advises her to forget what she's won and concentrate on the future -- a remark that May doesn't understand. Before he can explain, Drew is called to take the stage. He starts with his [[Drew's Roselia|Roselia]], which bursts from its Pokéball with an explosion of flower petals. Drew snaps his fingers and Roselia appears (the MFP go wild), and Savannah remarks backstage that Drew is amazing. May is less impressed.

...Meanwhile, Team Rocket has started manufacturing bows like Jessie's earlier adornment, apparently having developed a temporary taste for legitimate business. However, Jessie is demanding perfection in the workmanship, which neither James nor Meowth (nor Wobbafett) seem able to give.

Elsewhere, in the competition center, it's announced that Savannah, Drew, and May (plus a here-to unheard-of "Sonny") have advanced to the finals. May remarks that she was never very worried, and the MFP cheer for both Drew and Savannah. May is paired to face Savannah, while Drew is slated to fight Sonny. May will be using her [[May's Bulbasaur|Bulbasaur]] for the battle, while Savannah will be using her [[Lairon|Lairon]]. May starts giving Savannah advice for the upcoming match, but are interrupted by the arrival of Ash, Max, Brock, and Sandra. Ash suggests that if Savannah needs any help, she should probably ask him, which causes May's temper to flare. Sandra recommends that Savannah needs no advice, and that she should just battle the way she always does. Meanwhile, Ash tries to give May some Bulbasaur-related advice, but May snaps at him. Drew watches the exchange and shrugs.

Drew and Sonny's battle is first. Sonny sends out his [[Girafarig|Girafarig]] while Drew chooses his {{p|Masquerain}} that he showed May the previous evening. A brief exchange (Girafarig's [[Iron Tail|Iron Tail]] versus Masquerain's [[Bubble|Bubble]]), Masquerain uses [[Ice Beam|Ice Beam]] to freeze its own Bubbles, and then [[Hidden Power|Hidden Power]] to launch the guide at Sonny's Girafarig, which is then knocked out. Drew thus gains a quick victory over Sonny advances to the finals. That leaves May versus Savannah, and May determined to win. May's [[May's Bulbasaur|Bulbasaur]] and Savannah's [[Lairon|Lairon]] take the stage but each trainer has an immediate problem -- Savannah continues to suffer from stage fright and nerves and May's Bulbasaur is unfamiliar with the big city, and is dazzled by the contest stage and roaring crowd. Bulbasaur quickly retreats to behind May for cover. In the audience, Brock speculate that's May's angry outbursts backstage upset Bulbasaur. Unfortunately, May is also none too kind in telling Bulbasaur to take the stage, and Bulbasaur reluctantly steps forward to face Larion.

With the battle joined in earnest, Savannah orders Larion to use [[Take Down|Take Down]]. May calls for Bulbasaur to dodge, but it freezes before the bright lights and unfamiliar stage -- possibly compounded by May's anger. Bulbasaur takes the attack head on. May orders a counter-attack with [[Vine Whip|Vine Whip]], which Bulbasaur supplies, but Larion counters with a surprise and electric-type [[Shockwave|Shockwave]], which traces the Vine Whip and shocks Bulbasaur. Sandra reveals, at this point, that she was also the architect of the [[Shockwave|Shockwave]] combo and that because of Vine Whip's direct contact, Larion paralyzed Bulbasaur. Savannah orders a coup de grace with [[Metal Claw|Metal Claw]], which makes contact and causes the judges to call the battle against Bulbasaur. May declares that she's not done, but the judges rebuke her harshly, declaring that she has disregarded the well-being of her Bulbasaur. May has lost the battle (thus receiving her tragic downfall, as episode's title might have implied), and Savannah continues to the finals.

In the next scene, May is outside tending to her Bulbasaur. She is soon joined by Ash and Pikachu, who invite her inside to watch the final round. Ash tells May that everyone gets carried away with wanting to win sometimes, and that the most important fact of battling, contest or gym, is that trainer and Pokémon must be in sync to succeed. Meanwhile, Drew and Savannah are fighting fiercely. In the final seconds of the match, Drew scores an unavenged hit with Hidden Power -- and time expires before Savannah can counter with a Shockwave. The victory goes to Drew (who courteously shakes hands with his opponent after the battle), and he gains the [[Rubello Town]] Contest Ribbon, bringing his total to four (five being necessary to enter the Grand Festival).

Elsewhere, Team Rocket is having trouble selling their carefully crafted ribbons, and in the greatest irony, the stranger who purchase one earlier asks if she can return hers.

The episode ends with Ash and company, Savannah, and Sandra sitting around a table. Savannah declares that though she wanted the contest ribbon today, she didn't want it so badly that she took her existing ribbon forgranted. May realizes that she did exactly that -- take her other ribbons forgranted in her pursuit of yet another, and vows she never will do so again. In the end, May learned something from Savannah (rather than the reverse) and the narrator concludes that for May this defeat was a learning experience.

== Synopsis ==

The gang enter [[Rubello Town]], on their way to Ash's next gym battle -- but Max spots a poster for a Pokémon Contest is due to begin the next day. {{an|May}} is delighted, and Ash's ambitions for his next badge will have to be put on hold as May quickly decides to enter. Brock, however, notices a mysterious symbol on the contest poster -- "R1", which the group is at a loss to identify. Fortunately, Nurse Joy quickly explains that any entrant to this contest must have one ribbon already. In the Pokémon center, May also encounters Drew, who is also entering the Pokémon Contest (and insults May, as usual). However, as May's temper rises, Drew is engulfed by a swarm of rabid female fans (vaguely reminiscent of our old pal, [[Gary Oak|Gary Oak]]). Drew isn't exactly happy to see these fans, as they lean towards the obsessive side, but May becomes miffed and jealous nonetheless. However, the jealously is forgotten when one of the girls recognizes May and the group crowds around her, instead. However, the fans seem more interested in [[Norman|Norman]] than May or Max. During the discussion, Savannah, the head of the group, explains that they saw May in the Verdanturf Contest and that she will be entering this contest, making May realize she’s got a new, albeit friendly, rival. The group also introduces themselves with a cheer as the MFP ("Mothers for Pokémon"), and that they are a group of wives and mothers who love Pokémon. They decide to throw a party for May and Max, and one of the MFP tells Ash that he isn't on the list of "Promising and Handsome Young Trainers". Meanwhile, Team Rocket enters the town verily fatigued, but Jessie, upon seeing the contest poster, decides to enter. James and Meowth groan. Since she has yet to win a contest, Jessie has no ribbons -- so after a shouting match with an official, she resolves to steal one and enter the R1 exclusive contest anyway.

Back at the reception, Savannah and the MFP complement May and her father, Norman. Meanwhile, Ash mutters angrily (as he has now become the jealous one) that he does all the hard work, training, and gym battles. Nonetheless, Ash vehemently denies his jealousy when Max asks him about his complaining. At the other table, Savannah and May realize that neither of them have picked Pokémon for the contest! Savannah shows May her {{p|Lairon}} and {{p|Flareon}} (whilst complementing Brock on his knowledge of homemaking skills, which sends Brock to fantasy land). While showing May her Pokémon, Savannah reveals that this R1 competition requires the use of two Pokémon -- different ones for primary and secondary rounds. While Savannah merely has to decide the order, May faces a more difficult decision -- picking two candidates from her four Pokémon lineup. While Brock and Savannah go grocery shopping and meet Savannah's daughter Sandra, May, Ash, and Max talk the Pokémon choice over. Ironically, Sandra presents a seemingly substantial level of maturity, apologizing for her mother's sophomoric behavior and excitement over the contest and the MFP. Savannah and Sandra invite the company to dinner in the end.

May trains late into the night, testing all four of her Pokémon to see which is the best choice for the upcoming contest. Bulbasaur stumbles and trips in its attempted combination, but May remains confident and happily remembers the complements she got from the MFP earlier that day. Her reminiscence is interrupted by Drew's voice, calling out orders to his new {{p|Masquerain}}. Drew notices May watching her, and brags that "winning this contest will be a cinch." Drew also notices May's Pokémon, and inquires about her new [[May's Bulbasaur|Bulbasaur]] -- a rare find in the [[Hoenn|Hoenn Region]]. Drew insults May's Bulbasaur as undisciplined, which is probably an accurate assessment. Nonetheless, Drew's comments provoke May and she decides to use Bulbasaur in the contest -- a decision which startles the rest of the group.

Meanwhile, Savannah nears the breaking point from stage fright, but completely forgets her fear at the sight of Bulbasaur, which she says was her first Pokémon long ago. May and Savannah decide to start a practice battle to train -- Bulbasaur having the disadvantage against Savannah's Flareon. However, the battle is cut short by Team Rocket's interruption, which Jessie and James sporting a new ribbon-theft based motto (see trivia) -- "To Protect My Entry Status From Devastation! To Allow a Certain Contestant to Complete Her Registration! To Denounce the Evils of Losing, that's True! To Extend Her Winning Streak From Zero to Two!" James and Meowth are less than enthusiastic about the theft operation, but Jessie certainly is and sends out her [[Jessie's Dustox|Dustox]] to combat the Pokémon Savannah and May already have out. However, Ash, Brock, and Max quickly arrive on the scene. Flareon's flamethrower is deflected by {{p|Wobbuffet}}, but Ash's [[Ash's Pikachu|Pikachu]] and Brock's [[Brock's Lotad|Lotad]] and [[Brock's Mudkip|Mudkip]] are quickly called out to join the battle. {{p|Wobbuffet}} again deflects Pikachu's [[Thunderbolt|Thunderbolt]] and a pair of [[Water Gun|Water Guns]]. Jessie orders her Dustox to attack Sandra, though, and that's the breaking point for Savannah -- she becomes angry that Jessie would dare attack her daughter and orders Flareon to launch another attack. The blue punching bag, Wobbuffet, steps forward -- but the attack was aimed at the balloon, not Wobbuffet. Team Rocket goes down in flames. Jessie declares that she would rather give up James and Meowth than the ribbons (which angers James and Meowth) and they convince Jessie to surrender the ribbons to the group. Sandra and Savannah launch a water pulse which sends Team Rocket blasting off... and the day is done. Tomorrow is the contest.

== Synopsis ==
While resting by a lake, Ash decides to polish his Badge Case and remembers all the Gym Battles he’s so far had in [[Hoenn]], when suddenly a larger than normal {{p|Whiscash}}, a {{2t|Water|Ground}} Pokémon jumps out and eats the case. Ash calls out [[Ash's Corphish|Corphish]], which is promptly defeated by the giant Whiscash. Determined to get his hard-earned badges back, Ash dives in but nearly drowns when he is saved by a Fishing Master, Sullivan. Sullivan has spent years trying to catch the giant Whiscash and regards himself as a fishing legend and god (even though he, in 50 years, has never actually caught the Whiscash, who he has named Nero). Max accidentally insults Sullivan by asking why he hasn't caught Whiscash yet, but Ash and friends restore Sullivan's spirits by calling him a legend. Determined to retrieve the badges, Ash and the others start fishing, with Sullivan offering them various fishing rods and lures. Meanwhile Team Rocket are also trying to get a hold of the same Whiscash (figuring if they capture it, they will get both a new Pokémon and a bunch of badges). While Team Rocket actually spots the elusive Whiscash, Ash, Sullivan and company start fishing. While Ash and the others are not successful at catching anything, Sullivan gets a nibble from a Pokemon every few seconds, but none Whiscash, so he tosses them all back. Ash asks Sullivan to teach them the secret to fishing, and Sullivan begins to teach them the "art of angling". Max again accidentally insults Sullivan by telling him his first lesson -- fish where there are water Pokémon, is obvious, but everyone again calls Sullivan a legend to cheer him up. When Sullivan shows them how to cast the line properly, Max casts perfectly on the first try, again insulting Sullivan, who has spent decades perfecting his technique. Max gets a nibble from this cast -- and a Whiscash, though not Nero, surfaces. However, Nero does appear right next to the hooked Pokémon, and taunts Ash by showing him the badge case before disappearing.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket is fishing using James' bottle cap collection as lures. Things take a turn for the crazier when a hooked {{p|Feebas}} bites onto Jessie’s hair, which Jessie flicks off. This gives Meowth an idea, because in the next scene he's suggested Team Rocket fish using Jessie's hair as a rod and lure! Another Feebas (probably the same) bites onto Jessie's hair yet again. Meanwhile, Sullivan proclaims he can sense Nero nearby and casts his line -- but hooks only a Magikarp. However, Ash does manage to hook Nero, who takes the would-be anglers and their small boat on a ride towards a pile of rocks! Ash calls out [[Ash's Corphish|Corphish]] and orders it to use {{m|Crabhammer}} on him -- which sends Ash flying onto the rocks and putting the boat out of danger. The momentum allows Ash to pull Nero out of the water. Ash calls out [[Ash's Grovyle| Grovyle]], and attacks Nero, but the giant Pokémon simply laughs at Ash. However, it's Team Rocket that seem to have the last laugh -- they net Nero the Whiscash from the middle of the battle. Team Rocket quickly escaped using their enhanced balloon. Brock calls out [[Brock's Mudkip|Mudkip]] and [[Brock's Lombre|Lombre]] and orders both to use Water Gun, but Ash orders Grovyle to use [[Bullet Seed|Bullet Seed]]. Team Rocket is unable to outrun the attacks due to Nero's enormous weight, and the Bulletseed brings down the balloon. Team Rocket call out their Pokémon for a battle (which Ash combats with Pikachu and Grovyle). Whiscash escapes from its net and uses {{m|Earthquake}}, and Pikachu sends Team Rocket blasting off with {{m|Thunder}}. The smoke from the blast-off causes Whiscash to cough, bringing up Ash's badge case and badges.

Sullivan then challenges Nero to a battle, sending out his Hannah, his [[Flaaffy|Flaaffy]]. Using Flaaffy's Dynamic Punch and Iron Tail while dodging Nero's attacks, Sullivan weakens Nero, then orders Hannah to use Thundershock. Unfortunately, Whiscash are part ground-type, and the attack has no effect. Sullivan then proclaims that he has a plan to capture Nero, and draws a [[Master Ball|Master Ball]] out of his cloak (which Ash and friends recognize with a gasp), a rare and powerful Pokéball capable of capturing any Pokémon! Sullivan declares that it has taken 50 years just to get a Master Ball, and he throws the powerful ball, which Nero eats. Everyone gasps, and Sullivan yells at Nero exasperatedly (a Master Ball did just fail, after all). Nero jumps back into the water, and Sullivan declares that "Tomorrow's another day!" Ash and company cheer up Sullivan by calling him a legend again, before Ash and company bid Sullivan a cheery farewell.

== Synopsis ==
While resting by a lake, Ash decides to polish his Badge Case and remembers all the Gym Battles he’s so far had in [[Hoenn]], when suddenly a larger than normal {{p|Whiscash}}, a {{2t|Water|Ground}} Pokémon jumps out and eats the case. Ash calls out [[Ash's Corphish|Corphish]], which is promptly defeated by the giant Whiscash. Determined to get his hard-earned badges back, Ash dives in but nearly drowns when he is saved by a Fishing Master, Sullivan, who has spent years trying to catch the giant Whiscash, and who regards himself as a fishing legend and god (even though he, in 50 years, has never actually caught the Whiscash, who he has named Nero). Max accidentally insults Sullivan by asking why he hasn't caught Whiscash yet, but Ash and friends restore Sullivan's spirits by calling him a legend. Determined to retrieve the badges, Ash and the others start fishing, with Sullivan offering them various fishing rods and lures. Meanwhile Team Rocket are also trying to get a hold of the same Whiscash (figuring if they capture it, they will get both a new Pokémon and a bunch of badges). While Team Rocket actually spots the elusive Whiscash, Ash, Sullivan and company start fishing. While Ash and the others are not successful at catching anything, Sullivan gets a nibble from a Pokemon every few seconds, but none Whiscash, so he tosses them all back. Ash asks Sullivan to teach them the secret to fishing, and Sullivan begins to teach them the "art of angling". Max again accidentally insults Sullivan by telling him his first lesson -- fish where there are water Pokémon, is obvious, but everyone again calls Sullivan a legend to cheer him up. When Sullivan shows them how to cast the line properly, Max casts perfectly on the first try, again insulting Sullivan, who has spent decades perfecting his technique. Max gets a nibble from this cast -- and a Whiscash, though not Nero, surfaces. However, Nero does appear right next to the hooked Pokémon, and taunts Ash by showing him the badge case before disappearing.

Meanwhile, Team Rocket is fishing using James' bottle cap collection as lures. Things take a turn for the crazier when a hooked {{p|Feebas}} bites onto Jessie’s hair, which Jessie flicks off. This gives Meowth an idea, because in the next scene he's suggested Team Rocket fish using Jessie's hair as a rod and lure! Another Feebas (probably the same) bites onto Jessie's hair yet again. Meanwhile, Sullivan proclaims he can sense Nero nearby and casts his line -- but hooks only a Magicarp. However, Ash does manage to hook Nero, who takes the would-be anglers and their small boat on a ride towards a pile of rocks! Ash calls out [[Ash's Corphish|Corphish]] and orders it to use [[Crabhammer (move)|Crabhammer]] on him -- which sends Ash flying onto the rocks and putting the boat out of danger. The momentum allows Ash to pull Nero out of the water. Ash calls out [[Ash's Grovyle| Grovyle]], and attacks Nero, but the giant Pokémon simply laughs at Ash. However, it's Team Rocket that seem to have the last laugh -- they net Nero the Whiscash from the middle of the battle. Team Rocket quickly escaped using their enhanced balloon. Brock calls out [[Brock's Mudkip|Mudkip]] and [[Brock's Lombre|Lombre]] and orders both to use Water Gun, but Ash orders Grovyle to use [[Bullet Seed|Bullet Seed]]. Team Rocket is unable to outrun the attacks due to Nero's enormous weight, and the Bulletseed brings down the balloon. Team Rocket call out their Pokémon for a battle (which Ash combats with Pikachu and Grovyle). Whiscash escapes from its net and uses [[Earthquake|Earthquake]], and Pikachu sends Team Rocket blasting off with [[Thunder|Thunder]]. The smoke from the blast-off causes Whiscash to cough, bringing up Ash's badge case and badges.

Sullivan then challenges Nero to a battle, sending out his Hannah, his [[Flaaffy|Flaaffy]]. Using Flaaffy's Dynamic Punch and Iron Tail while dodging Nero's attacks, Sullivan weakens Nero, then orders Hannah to use Thundershock. Unfortunately, Whiscash are part ground-type, and the attack has no effect. Sullivan then proclaims that he has a plan to capture Nero, and draws a [[Master Ball|Master Ball]] out of his cloak (which Ash and friends recognize with a gasp), a rare and powerful Pokéball capable of capturing any Pokémon! Sullivan declares that it has taken 50 years just to get a Master Ball, and he throws the powerful ball, which Nero eats. Everyone gasps, and Sullivan yells at Nero exasperatedly (a Master Ball did just fail, after all). Nero jumps back into the water, and Sullivan declares that "Tomorrow's another day!" Ash and company cheer up Sullivan by calling him a legend again, before Ash and company bid Sullivan a cheery farewell.

== Synopsis ==
The scene opens with [[Team Rocket]] on the beach. James exclaims about how they have made it back to shore and Meowth remarks that they can now get back to stealing Pikachu. A big wave crashes against the shore. Jessie, however, just wants to relax on the nice beach. James and Meowth turn to see her lying on a lounge chair and soaking in the sun. [[James]] and Meowth begin to yell, but she just picks up her fruit drink and takes a sip, saying she just wants to take it easy today. [[Meowth (Team Rocket)|Meowth]] and James continue to bicker, and then they notice Wobbuffet lounging on another nearby lounge chair and begin to yell at it. Whilst they fight, a strange creature speeds towards the beach from the ocean. [[Jessie]] suddenly notices it and screams. The mysterious creature rams them from under the sand, sending all the Rockets clear over the horizon. The creature then returns to the ocean.

[[Ash's friends|Ash and co]] now sit on the same spot James and Meowth were before. A wave also crashes down as Ash declares that there will be a lot of training today to prepare them for the rematch with [[Brawly]]. Lotad waddles up with some water in its lily pad. {{Ash}} notices this and he and Pikachu begin to wash their faces. May and Max sit at a nearby table brushing their teeth while [[Brock]] and Torchic start a fire to prepare the stew.

Ash then releases all his Pokémon and they begin to meditate at the edge of the beach. He starts to explain to his Pokémon the importance of meditating and for them to think about winning the match. {{an|May}} wonders what he is doing while Max sits at the edge of a pool of water washing the clothes. [[Brock's Forretress|Forretress]] then collects the clothes and does a rapid spin to dry them. Max thanks it and he takes the clothes to May to hang up. May asks Max why Ash is spending all his time meditating, but Brock interrupts. He informs her that meditating is actually a form of training, as it prepares Ash and his [[Pokémon]] for matches. He then tells them that he thinks Ash is learning to listen to the waves.

A giant wave begins to head to shore. [[Ash's Swellow|Taillow]] begins to freak out but Ash tells it to keep meditating, as if it can learn how to sense the waves, they may be able to beat Brawly and his surfing techniques. Taillow shuts its eyes and continues to meditate as {{Ash}} listens intently. The wave grows larger and nearer and Ash tells them all to get out of the way. They all get up and rush off, but when the waves recede. Pikachu lies on the ground covered in seaweed. Ash checks on his Pokémon, now aware that they didn't make it out in time. {{an|May}} laughs a bit and Brock tells Ash to hang up their wet clothes.

Ash and his Pokémon then try again. Ash orders them to run and this time, they all get away, but [[Ash's Treecko|Treecko]] stays. It starts to open its eyes, but the wave hits it. Ash wonders why it didn't move and May and [[Max]] comment that it must want to learn to take the attacks. Ash wonders why it isn't listening and May makes a snobby comment about Pokémon Contests, which makes Ash angry.

Treecko continues to take wave after wave, not budging. May then cuts in saying about all she has learned from Pokémon Contests. As Brock brings the group some tea, May leaps up and begins to dance around. Ash and co are confused, and she then releases Torchic and Wurmple. The two begin to play around, but May comments that they have to learn to be more graceful, and she begins to dance again. She then stops, saying she must've gone too far. [[Brock]] agrees and Max comments that gym battles are different from [[Pokémon Contests]]. May walks up to them and starts to brag again, and Ash says she must really like contests.

Suddenly, they all notice that the tent is walking away! Ash and co chase after it and Ash orders [[Ash's Pikachu|Pikachu]] to shock it, but Brock says that isn't a good idea. May tells Wurmple to stop it with {{m|String Shot}}, and it snags the tent. May then tells it to reel it in, but Wurmple seems to be having trouble. Treecko grabs on to help, but it is pulled forward. Ash and co all grab the string and start to pull, but the creature under the tent causes them to trip. It drags them along the beach for a few minutes, and then retreats to the water, causing Ash and co to fall in.

Everyone's clothes are now hung up to dry and Ash stands on the beach covered in sand. They inspect the damaged tent and the rice balls that litter the beach and wonder what could've done it. Ash suggests that a group of {{p|Diglett}} did it, Brock thinks a {{p|Krabby}} did and Max thinks it was an {{p|Aron}}. Brock begins to sew the tent up while exclaiming that a Pokémon that could pull all of them like that must be really strong, but May thinks it was scary. Ash then becomes intrigued and decides he wants to snag and catch it. Brock and Max agree to help, but May just sighs.

Meanwhile, up on a cliff, [[Team Rocket]] recovers from their earlier blast off. Jessie remarks about how strong that thing was and James and Meowth wonder what is was. [[Jessie's Wobbuffet|Wobbuffet]] pops out at the edge of the cliff and Jessie turns and recalls it. She then notices the mysterious creature speeding up the beach under the sand. She points it out to Meowth and James as the creature smashes into a rock and diverts direction. Jessie instantly wants to get it and she begins to rush off. She jumps over a rock and lands on a sleeping {{p|Loudred}}! Jessie steps back and freaks out as the Pokémon angrily wakes up. It lets out a cry sending Team Rocket sky high.

That night, {{Ashfr|Ash and co.}} sit by some bushes waiting for the mysterious creature to reappear. May complains that she is tired and wants to go to bed, but Ash refuses. [[Max]] ticks her off with a smart mouthed comment and she begins to tackle him. Pikachu then hears something and Ash asks if the creature is close. It signals that it is and they all freeze to look out at the [[Pokémon food]] they placed at the edge of the beach.

As they wait, Ash suddenly hears something behind him, but it's too late. The creature smashes into them sending them all flying onto the beach. It continues its pursuit and Ash and co split up. It decides to chase {{an|May}} as she runs screaming for her life. Ash turns around and tells {{ash|Pikachu}} to shock it, and it does. The creature sinks into the sand and Ash and co examine the hole it left. Ash asks Pikachu if it can still sense it, but Pikachu signals that it's gone.

That morning, {{Ash}} and co lean against the tent exhausted. May comments that they shouldn't waste their time catching it, but Ash gets angry. She asks him why he wants to catch something that almost killed her, but he still doesn't listen. Brock suggests they try a different plan and Ash says if it attacks again, he and Pikachu will shock it. He then adds that he saw three spikes protrude from the sand when it attached, and he suggests that it may be a pair of {{p|Sandslash}}. Max remembers Sandslash and says he learned about it in [[Professor Oak]]'s Pokémon Guide. May is confused and he pulls out the book and shows her.

The group then heads back to the beach and [[Brock]] has Forretress make a huge hole in the sand with rapid spin. Brock thanks it and tells it to make more as Ash explains they are going to use the pitfall trick. May and Max cover the holes with leaves as Ash explains that when the Pokémon tries to chase them, it'll fall into the holes. May and Max don't think it'll work.

That night, Ash and co wait in the bushes again while watching the Pokémon food. Ash notices three large bunches of seaweed emerge from the water. They walk up and begin to eat the Pokémon food. Brock says the plan is working and he sets some more food on a nearby rock. One of the seaweed bunches spies this and the three head towards the new food, only to fall into a hole!

Ash and co approach, only to find that they have snagged Team Rocket. They begin to say their motto, but May and Max interrupt, asking why they were covered and seaweed and eating Pokémon food. Team Rocket cowers in the hole, saying they had to make do. Suddenly, the creature emerges from the hole and smashes Team Rocket out, sending them blasting off again! The creature then slides up the side of the hole and heads towards the food, but Pikachu uses {{m|Quick Attack}}, sending it flying out of the sand. It lands with a thud to reveal that it is actually a {{p|Corphish}}!

Ash scans it with the [[Pokédex]] and Brock says that Ash should catch it fast, as its speed and power will be perfect in a match against Brawly. Ash agrees and sends in Pikachu as Corphish gets up. Max thinks this will be easy, as Corphish is at a disadvantage. Pikachu starts with {{m|Thunderbolt}}, but Corphish dodges and uses {{m|Bubble}}. It then digs under the ground leaving Pikachu confused. It looks around, but Corphish smashes up and uses {{m|Crabhammer}}, sending Pikachu flying. As it falls, it tries to use Iron Tail, but Corphish catches it and chucks it at Ash, sending him flying back.

Brock comments that this Corphish is stronger then he thought, and Ash has a challenge on his hands. {{Ash}} agrees and lays all his trust in Treecko. Ash releases it and the match begins. {{Ash}} tells Treecko to meditate, and it closes its eyes and stands there. May wonders what he is doing but Ash seems to know. The sun begins to rise and Corphish becomes impatient. It uses Bubble, but Ash tells Treecko to hit them away. It uses Slam, knocking the bubbles off course. Corphish begins to steam and it rushes in for a Crabhammer, but Treecko Quick Attacks it, sending it flying. It lands on the ground and Ash throws a [[Poké Ball]], catching it!

Ash picks up his [[Poké Ball]] and does his "I caught a Pokémon" pose. Brock, May, and [[Max]] congratulate him and Ash releases Corphish. He kneels down and introduces himself, saying he hopes to train it well. Corphish smiles and shakes his hand, but ends up tossing Ash in the process. Everyone laughs and the scene rises; Ash with a new Pokémon.

== Synopsis ==
{{Ash}} and {{ashfr|co.}} arrive at a town. {{an|May}} decides to bring out {{TP|May|Bulbasaur}} in order to check out the sights. Bulbasaur suddenly runs to a nearby store rack and wants to eat the displayed fruit, but May explains the concept of buying items. When [[Max]] calls to May, Bulbasaur slips away and climbs into the bed of a pickup truck full of flowers, smelling them. May runs to the truck, but the vehicle pulls away. They pursue the truck, and Ash and [[Brock]] speed up, getting the driver’s attention and making him stop the truck, allowing May to get Bulbasaur.

At the [[Pokémon Center]], [[Team Rocket]] is in disguise and working on the Pokémon Transporter. Unbeknownst to [[Nurse Joy]], they are really altering it in order to steal the imported [[Pokémon]]. Ash and co. arrive as Team Rocket finishes and leaves. Ash calls [[Professor Oak]] and Max mentions May's Bulbasaur. She brings Bulbasaur to the screen and earns the professor’s approval. Ash asks about his {{AP|Bulbasaur}}, and the professor brings it to the screen. May’s Bulbasaur already shows friendliness to Ash’s. He asks the professor to send his Bulbasaur through the transporter in order to meet May’s Bulbasaur.

Professor Oak agrees and puts Bulbasaur into its [[Poké Ball]] before transporting it. The transport appears to be successful and Ash picks up the Poké Ball, but it won’t open. Other children also point out the same problem, as their Poké Balls are empty. Max immediately suspects that the repair guys were fakes. Nurse Joy does not believe so until the real repair guys arrive.

Team Rocket is outside the building snatching the Poké Balls as Nurse Joy leads Ash and co. to the back, encountering Team Rocket. They quickly escape in their balloon. Ash and May send out {{AP|Taillow}} and {{TP|May|Beautifly}} to stop them, but [[James]] fires rocket boosters to evade, even dodging {{AP|Pikachu}}’s {{m|Thunderbolt}}. However, the engines fail, sending the balloon flying far away. A Poké Ball falls from the sky and May's Bulbasaur grabs it. The ball opens and releases the Pokémon inside, and it's Ash's Bulbasaur. Bulbasaur jumps into Ash’s arms and May’s Bulbasaur reaches out with a vine. Ash’s Bulbasaur matches the vine in a high-five style as May brings her Bulbasaur closer. They decide to allow the Bulbasaur to team up to search while Taillow and Beautifly cover from the air.

Team Rocket begins to gather all the stolen Poké Balls into wrapped sacks. James’s bag develops a hole and it drops Poké Balls, leaving a trail. Meanwhile, while Ash and the others are searching, May's Bulbasaur drifts to sniffing flowers. Ash's Bulbasaur explains to May’s Bulbasaur and gets it back on track. Taillow and Beautifly find the Poké Ball trail. A wild {{p|Shroomish}} and {{p|Nuzleaf}} lead Ash and co. to the balloon’s landing site, where they find one of the Poké Balls. Taillow brings another Poké Ball and leads them to the ball trail.

Team Rocket gets to their cabin and {{MTR}} notices that James’s bag had a hole and he dropped the Poké Balls. They find Ash and co. outside, but they retreat back inside and James activates a switch, raising steel walls around the perimeter and rendering it impregnable. However, Ash notices an open window, allowing May and the others to go onto the roof and retrieve the stolen property. Meowth throws Poké Balls and James uses the skis as a makeshift baseball bat to send them outside, using the Pokémon inside, a {{p|Golbat}} and a {{p|Primeape}}, to attack Ash. May orders the two Bulbasaur to send their vines inside and attempt to grab the sack of Poké Balls. James tries to tie the vines together, but the Bulbasaur smack James back with the vines. Brock recalls the attacking Primeape and Golbat while Pikachu attacks the wall with {{m|Iron Tail}}, forcing Team Rocket out. [[Jessie]] and James send out {{TP|Jessie|Seviper}} and {{TP|James|Cacnea}}. Seviper’s {{m|Poison Tail}} and Cacnea’s {{m|Pin Missile}} put down May’s Bulbasaur. Although May calls for a {{m|Razor Leaf}} attack, Cacnea’s Pin Missile is too strong for May’s Bulbasaur. Ash's Bulbasaur steps in and stops the attack with {{m|Vine Whip}}. Seviper and Cacnea attempt to attack with Poison Tail and {{m|Needle Arm}}, but both Bulbasaur use Vine Whip to push them back and seize the stolen Poké Balls. They try to attack again, but Pikachu stops them with Thunderbolt and sends them flying. The Bulbasaur give a vine whip high five. Ash and the others return the Poké Balls. Professor Oak calls back and asks for Ash’s Bulbasaur to return and stop the {{t|water}} and {{t|grass}} Pokémon from fighting. Ash sends his Bulbasaur back to [[Professor Oak's laboratory]] as May’s Bulbasaur appears to have made a positive change. Ash and co. leave the Pokémon Center and hit the road.
