He shares his Japanese name -- which can be taken to mean "wisdom" or "reason" (智) -- with the creator of the [[Pokémon]] franchise, [[Satoshi Tajiri]]. His English surname is a pun of the original English motto, "[[Gotta catch 'em all!|Gotta Catch 'em All!]]."

Ash's main goal in life, as described in [[EP001|the first episode]], is to be the world's greatest [[Pokémon master|Pokémon Master]]. Ash began his journey at the age of 10 as a warm-hearted and well-intentioned but stubborn, rash and amateurish [[Pokémon Trainer]]. He was forced to accept the cheeky {{AP|Pikachu}} from [[Professor Oak]] as his [[starter Pokémon]] because he carelessly broke his alarm clock and woke up late on the day he was set to get his first Pokémon. He was determined to achieve his goal, however, and when Pikachu saw that he was willing to compromise his own safety to keep it safe he formed a strong bond of friendship with Pikachu. This would set his course for the future.

However, from that point, Ash still had a lot to learn about becoming a Trainer. His [[Ash's Butterfree|first Pokémon]] was {{pkmn2|caught}} by luck, he knew absolutely nothing about [[Pokémon battle|battling]], and was hesitant to admit it whenever he was wrong. Many of his first [[Gym]] [[badge]]s were given to him merely out of gratitude for his assistance rather than claiming an actual victory in battle over the [[Gym Leader]]s; of his first five gym battles, only his victory over [[Lt. Surge]] was an actual victory. Every time he thought he was doing well, he would somehow cross paths with his childhood [[rival]], [[Gary Oak]]. He always reminded Ash that he was always a step or seven behind, with Gary catching around forty-five Pokémon by the time Ash had only caught his {{AP|seventh|Kingler}}. This hampered matters further when, owing to his inexperience, his {{AP|Charizard}}, his most powerful Pokémon, refused to listen to him until [[EP105|Ash could prove himself]] to the powerful Fire-type.

Over time, Ash's dedication to his goal paid off. After earning his first eight badges he went on to compete in the [[Indigo League]], advancing to the fifth round - one further than Gary. After recovering from his defeat, he continued on to improve his skills; take on new challenges; and compete in more [[Pokémon League]] competitions - triumphing in the [[Orange League]] and the {{Gdis|Battle Frontier|III}}.

Ash has changed a great deal over the course of the series, particularly in regards to his skill at [[Pokémon training]], but his earnestness, rashness, and determination have remained. Never straying from his goal, he has remained loyal to {{ashfr|his friends}}, his family, and his supporters, but most of all his Pokémon. Ash became a great Trainer by learning to find and use the inner strength of each of his Pokémon by bonding with them. For example, when he received a banner filled with prints from his Pokémon in ''[[AG187|The Unbeatable Lightness of Seeing!]]'', he knew which Pokémon placed specific prints, showing his close bond with them. He also learns where their hidden abilities lie, as well as resorting to unorthodox strategies when fighting particularly challenging opponents. For example, he uses his Pikachu's speed to outmaneuver larger foes and attack. In another instance, his {{AP|Charizard}} defeated [[Gary's Blastoise]] by causing the field to overheat before mounting a close-quarters attack while Blastoise was blinded by the steam. He also prefers to train a Pokémon to be the best it can without forcing it to [[Evolution|evolve]], as evidenced by his treatment of {{AP|Gligar|Gliscor}} in ''[[DP085|Fighting Fear With Fear!]]''. He is happy when his Pokémon evolve but lets them choose whether or not they want to evolve instead of forcing them.

Early on, Ash originally trained not to further himself but instead to catch more Pokémon than Gary. He later slowed his pace which allowed him to focus on the individual traits of each Pokémon. At the [[Johto]] League [[Silver Conference]], with great humility and maturity, Ash finally won a battle against his old rival, signifying a great milestone in his history. His maturity has also increased in his dealings with Pokémon. This is shown when [[Ash's Primeape|a Mankey]] stole his {{AP|hat}} in ''[[EP025|Primeape Goes Bananas]]'', he screamed and yelled at it, even climbing trees just to get his hat back, but when [[Dawn's Ambipom|an Aipom]] did the same in ''[[AG179|Slaking Kong]]'', he stated merely that he would feel strange without a hat. When Aipom stole his hat again in ''[[DP009|Setting the World on its Buneary]]'', however, while it was under his ownership, he chased after it in the same manner as before.

In most episodes of the anime, especially those during the Johto League saga, Ash befriends someone who will influence him and cause him to strive to become a better Trainer. Although he is not a dependent individual, he is still young and has learned to make his way relying on his {{AP|friends}}, particularly the maternal skills of Brock. The honor of "best friend" is usually reserved for Pikachu but Ash has come to see his closest human friends in the same light over time; using the term for {{an|Misty}} and {{an|Brock}} in ''[[EP273|Gotta Catch Ya Later]]'' as well as {{an|May}} and [[Max]] in ''[[AG178|Battling the Enemy Within]]''.

He has traversed much of the [[Pokémon world]] and has thus far participated in four [[Pokémon League#Championship competitions|Pokémon League regional competitions]], but he is still learning new things about Pokémon all the time.

Ash has gained a close connection with many [[legendary Pokémon]], including {{an|Mewtwo}}, {{an|Ho-Oh}}, {{OBP|Lugia|movie 2}}, {{OBP|Latias|movie 5}}, [[Lake guardians (anime)#Azelf|Azelf]], {{OBP|Shaymin|movie 11}}, {{an|Giratina}} and {{an|Arceus}}. In the English dub of the [[M02|second movie]], he was revealed to be "The Chosen One" - the one who would bring balance back to the world when it was disrupted. Although viewed as a normal human, Ash does have some special abilities, as he is said to have the same [[aura]] as [[Sir Aaron]], a legendary hero, and is theoretically able to manipulate it in much the same way. However, he has not received any training in this field, opting to continue his Pokémon journey instead. He has also been likened to an ancient [[aura]] guardian in ''[[DP056|The Keystone Pops!]]'', who also had a partner {{p|Pikachu}}. Later, in ''[[DP071|Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! Ash has also participated in contests. He has a [[Contest Pass]] for the [[Sinnoh]] region, though he has stated that the contest he got it for was the only one he intends on entering. He also has one for the Hoenn region as it was required to watch one of the contests held there. Ash carries half of a broken [[Poké Ball]] with him everywhere, while Gary has the other half, as a symbol of their ongoing, but now friendly, rivalry; [[Misty's special lure]], which she sent to him as a gift; and half of a ribbon he received in a contest against May before she left the group to compete in Johto. Ash also participated in the [[Wallace Cup]] on the suggestion of [[Wallace]] but he lost in the third round.

Ash soon obtained all of the Sinnoh gym badges. During his battles in the [[Lily of the Valley Conference]], he managed to advance to the Top 4, during which time he defeated his long-time Sinnoh rival [[Paul]], and fought against [[Tobias]], becoming the only Trainer to defeat his {{p|Darkrai}}. Though he lost later on in the battle, he seems to be okay with losing, as he has become closer to his Pokémon than ever before.

Ash is now currently in his venture to [[Unova]], bringing along only his Pikachu as he did in Hoenn and planned to in [[Sinnoh]].

Ash lived with his mother, [[Delia Ketchum]], until he left for his Pokémon journey at the age of ten.

His father was never introduced. The anime suggests that his father was once a Pokémon Trainer who began his journey in Pallet Town, and that he is still living. An interview with the series' storyboarder confirmed Ash's father is a Trainer on his own journey. According to the same storyboarder, Ash's father may or may not be introduced in the series, depending on its necessity to Ash's further maturity and development as a Trainer.

Ash is an only child, breaking from the tradition of several other main characters, with the exception of {{an|Dawn}} and possibly {{Tracey}} and {{an|Iris}}, whose siblings are often a foil or focal point in their lives.

As a Trainer, Ash has captured and befriended a sizable number of Pokémon over the course of the anime. His philosophy on {{pkmn|training}} is that Pokémon are individuals and that a combination of trust, friendship and hard work are needed to overcome adversity. He seems to battle best with Pokémon that are similar to Pikachu: ones that are [[Appendix:Metagame terminology#Sweeper|speedy and maneuverable, yet able to perform high-powered attacks]]; however, he is willing to work with any Pokémon that comes into his care. Ash's battle style is generally spontaneous and fairly unorthodox, and his Pokémon often reflect these traits.

Ash Ketchum is a starring character in [[Electric Tale of Pikachu|The Electric Tale of Pikachu]], a manga series based on the anime. Ash's journey in The Electric Tale of Pikachu follows roughly the same plot as in the anime: first traveling the [[Kanto]] region to participate in the [[Pokémon League]], before embarking on a journey around the [[Orange Archipelago]].

While there are many similarities between the anime and manga versions of Ash, there are several differences as well. For example, while the anime version of Ash appears to be indifferent to love and romance, the manga version of Ash has a huge crush on Gary's sister, [[Daisy Oak|May Oak]]. He is also prone to quickly falling in love just like Brock, but to a much more subtle or less extreme degree.

Ash's appearance differs in the manga as well. He wears a red jacket, much like {{ga|Red}}'s, instead of the blue he wears in the anime. Also, for the duration of the [[Electric Tale of Pikachu volume 1|first volume]], he wears a different hat, which is solid red with a "PM" on the front. Beginning in ''[[ET05|The Human Race and the Pokémon Race]]'', his hat is changed to match the one he wears in the anime.

Ash owns many of the same Pokémon as in the anime, with a few exceptions: he captures a {{AP|Fearow}} and an {{p|Oddish}}. He also captures a {{p|Mankey}}, which he trades to a shady salesman for a map of [[Mt. Moon]], and a giant {{p|Slowpoke}}, which he trades to [[Gary Oak]].

Calista appeared to be very enthusiastic about archeology and Pokémon. However, her parents refused to support her decision to pursue this career. One day, she received a phone call telling her to go and locate a tree hole in a forest with her {{p|Baltoy}}. With {{Ash}}'s help, they located a mysterious woman in the tree hole, but she disappeared soon after.

Following her into the hole, they found a large number of boulders, which Baltoy moved aside. Underneath, they found a badly injured Baltoy. Suddenly, the mysterious woman appeared and informed the kids that she was Calista's future self. She put her Baltoy on an altar when it fell, trapping it under the boulder. She called Calista in the past, hoping she'd help save Baltoy. After saving it, future Calista reminded present Calista not to give up on her hobbies.

==Synopsis==

{{Ash}}, {{an|Iris}} and {{an|Dent}} are seen stopping beside a river to have lunch as they make their way to [[Shippou City]]. As there will be a full moon later that night, Iris had picked berries in advance so that she could see the moon later. Meanwhile, Dent is already cooking vegetable rice for the group, and prevents Ash from eating the berries. He then gives a bowl of Pokémon Food to both {{AP|Pikachu}} and {{TP|Iris|Kibago}}. As Dent makes final preparations for his meals, a {{p|Darumakka}} walks past and greets them.

Ash checks his [[Pokédex]] on Darumakka. Iris, adored by Darumakka's cuteness, walks up to it and starts playing with its eyebrows. Darumakka, in retaliation, uses {{m|Flamethrower}} on Iris. Dent then comments on how strong-willed Darumakka is, and how it is said to bring good luck. Oblivious to the group, an orange paw reaches out and grabs a bowl of Pokémon Food that Dent had prepared earlier. As Pikachu turns around and realizes its bowl had disappeared, it thinks that Kibago had eaten it and alerts Ash. However, Kibago, backed by Iris, denies taking the food. As they were quarreling, the group suddenly realize that Darumakka is fast asleep.

Curious as to confirm what the Pokédex says about Darumakka not falling when it is sleeping, Iris pokes Darumakka sideways. True enough, Darumakka tethers back and forth on its bottom. While the group is now mesmerized by Darumakka's ability, the orange paw then grabs the other bowl of Pokémon food. Pikachu turns in time to see another Darumakka running away with its food. Kibago turns around thereafter, and thinking that Pikachu ate both of the Pokémon food, starts fighting with it. Ash and Iris manage to separate both Pikachu and Kibago, and Pikachu explains that Darumakka took the Pokémon food. However, Dent points out that Darumakka had been sleeping throughout their conflict, and could not have taken any of their food.

Suddenly, another Darumakka appears, holding both bowls of Pokémon Food and Iris' berries. The group then finally realize that there are two Darumakka, and starts pursuing the Darumakka with the food. The sleeping Darumakka awakes instantly, uses Flamethrower between the group and its partner, before running away with its companion. Ash sends out {{AP|Oshawott}}, and commands it to use {{m|Water Gun}}. With a leap off the wall, the pair of Darumakka dodges the water attack, and executes two well coordinated Flamethrowers at Oshawott. Unable to dodge the attack, Oshawott took damage and fainted. The two Darumakka escapes.

Ash brings Oshawott to a [[Pokémon Center]], where it is attended to by [[Nurse Joy]] and her {{TP|Nurse Joy|Tabunne}}. Meanwhile, [[Jessie]], [[James]] and {{MTR}} of [[Team Rocket]] are dining at a café in a town near a river. With a snap of her finger, Jessie calls for the waiter, and asks for a cup of cappuccino, "as fast as a rocket". The waiter, apparently caught on to the word 'rocket', subsequently serves her 'the' cup of cappuccino, its cream taking on the shape of a bridge. With very clear intentions of what to do next, the cream is then stirred into the coffee.

The sky glows a reddish-orange as dawn approaches. Oshawott is fully healed and Ash recalls it into its [[Poké Ball]]. Iris passes a comment on the two Darumakka, and Nurse Joy subsequently reveals that together with a {{p|Darmanitan}}, the two Darumakka actually lived in harmony with the residents of the town they were in. However, the three Pokémon were not seen together anymore, and the two Darumakka suddenly started stealing food for no apparent reason. Seeming to have sidetracked from the Darumakka, Iris notices a Clock Tower in the middle of the city. Nurse Joy then explains to them that the bell of the tower had stopped ringing, and the tower would soon be demolished. Iris expressed regret when Ash's stomach started growling. Aware that they have not eaten after the Darumakka had stolen their food, the group stays at the Pokémon Center for dinner.

As there was a full moon on that night, Nurse Joy tells everyone that she will be preparing dumplings for them. Delighted, Ash and the group offer to help with the preparations. However, upon reaching the kitchen, the group were then greeted again by the two Darumakka, who were ready to escape with their dumplings. With much speed and agility, the two Daruma Pokémon jumped out of the window. Ash sends out {{AP|Pidove}} hoping to catch them, and at the same time to find out the reason behind the thefts. The two Darumakka continued jumping wildly and away from the group, and into an alley. They then jumped in opposite directions and split up at a T-junction.

Ash and Iris follows the Darumakka with the dumplings, while Dent follows the other. Despite so, the two Darumakka eventually manages to evade the group, leaving them clueless as to where they had ran off to. When they regathered, Pidove gestured to the two Darumakka who were then sneaking into the Clock Tower. The group followed.

Deep into the night, the Team Rocket trio is seen standing on top of a bridge. A figure materializes from deep within the fog, cloaked as they were, carrying a briefcase. As the figure approaches them and close to Jessie, they break into small talk. Facing away from each other, Jessie briefly mentions keeping warm with 'a cup of cappuccino', a phrase that was used to establish a trust with the stranger. The stranger slowly puts down the briefcase and then instructs the trio to receive instructions when they arrive at Shippou City. As she proceeds to take her leave, the chill wind picks up, together with Team Rocket's will and determination to succeed in their next mission.

Ash and the group chases after the two Darumakka up the staircase of the Clock Tower. On realizing that Ash is following closely behind, the two Darumakka panics and speeds up. When the group reaches the top, they find the partially moonlit room empty, until the two Darumakka are seen pressed against the top of the wall in a shadowy corner of the room. Oblivious to Ash, the two quickly jumps off the wall and aims two coordinated Flamethrowers at him, to which he dodges just in time. However, in the heat of the action, the ladder at the back of the room caught fire, setting the room ablaze with reddish-orange sparks.

Ash sends out Oshawott, and the Sea Otter Pokémon aims its Water Gun at the burning ladder. As the flames started to extinguish, the ladder collapses, and the two Darumakka jumps up, once again aiming their Flamethrowers at Ash. Immediately, Ash tells Pikachu to use {{m|Thunderbolt}}, and in a clash of fire and electricity, an explosion follows. Ash then commands Oshawott to attack the two Darumakka with Water Gun, an attack which hit and sent both Darumakka flying into the air. However, the pair countered by {{m|Rest|Resting}} while they were being hit, and they landed softly, tethering about their bottoms like an egg, upright on its broader end.

As Ash and the group inch closer to inspect, the two Darumakka suddenly wakes up and jumps across them. When Ash and Iris tells them they they did not want to battle them, the two stare at each other blankly. Dent adds that they were only trying to find out why the two of them were stealing food. The two Darumakka then decides to trust the group, and waddles across to underneath the hole which the ladder one stood. As they point to the top of the hole, Ash understands that they both want to get to the top, and decides to help them. With Dent's assistance, Ash manages to climb to the top of the hole and sends out {{AP|Snivy}}. Grabbing Pikachu first, then the two Darumakka, Snivy was able to bring Ash and his companions safely to the top.

Before the group could proceed, Iris notices that there is a significant amount of heat generated from the floor above. The group then ascends a ladder to find a Darmanitan under a large bell, its {{a|Daruma Mode}} having being activated. Ash checks his Pokédex. Dent explains that during Daruma Mode, Darmanitan's special attack increase significantly, giving rise to its {{t|Psychic}} abilities. Its physical attacks, however, are compromised.

Iris complains about the heat generated by the Darmanitan. Meanwhile, the two Darumakka unwrap the bag with the dumplings, allowing Darmanitan to guide the dumplings to its mouth using {{m|Psychic}}. Ash then realize that the Darumakka are stealing food to feed the immobile Darmanitan, while Dent notices that as long as Darmanitan is in Daruma Mode and is using its Psychic abilities, it will generate a lot of heat. Iris questions why Darmanitan does not return to its normal state despite having being fed dumplings, and the two Darumakka returns with the answer - a thick metal rod in the shape of a question mark. Dent suspects the rod to be used as a hook, and the group soon realize that the bell Darmanitan is sitting under is actually floating!

Dent extrapolates that Darmanitan actually prevented the heavy bell from dropping to the bottom of the Clock Tower when the hook had broken. Incapable of motion, Darmanitan had activated its Daruma Mode, in which it used Psychic to levitate the bell. However, that also meant that it was not able to eat, causing the two Darumakka to steal food to feed their immobile companion. Iris then applauded their efforts, causing the two Darumakka to smile.

Suddenly, Darmanitan started intensively glowing red, prompting Ash and his friends to take action. Throwing a Poké Ball each, Ash and Dent send out {{AP|Tepig}} and {{TP|Dent|Yanappu}} respectively. When the hook was thrown into the air, Tepig sprayed it with {{m|Ember}}, but nothing significant happened. Immediately, Darmanitan started emitting fire. The two Darumakka then offered to help out. Once again, yanappu threw the hook into the air, and Tepig used Ember. This time, however, combined with the Flamethrowers of the two Darumakka, the iron hook glowed red-hot. yanappu, under Dent's orders, used {{m|Bullet Seed}} and shaped the hook into the shape of an 'S'. Ash promptly sends out Oshawott. With Water Gun, Oshawott cooled the hook, and it dropped onto the floor. Pikachu inspects the hook and picks it up, satisfied.

Ash and his friends then question on how to get the hook to the top of the bell. In response, Darmanitan uses Psychic on Ash, Pikachu and the hook, causing them to levitate to the top of the bell. Ash grabs the hook from Pikachu, and hangs it at the top of the bar. He then reaches out and attempts to grab the bell handle, while Iris and Dent cheers him on. Just before Ash grabs the handle, Darmanitan deactivates its Daruma Mode, and Ash, Pikachu and the bell falls... right into the hands of Darmanitan. With a great upward thrust, the bell now in mid-air, Darmanitan performs a series of leaps to the top of the bar, and grabs the bell before it could drop any further. Iris and Dent gasped in awe, apparently surprised at what had happened. Ash, followed by Pikachu, jumps off the bell and subsequently thanks Darmanitan. Darmanitan winks, and subsequently places the bell back into the hook.

With a triumphant leap off the bar, Darmanitan was rejoined by the two Darumakka. They approach the group, grateful for what they have done for them. Ash advises the two Darumakka not to steal anymore food, and they replied with a sheepish grin.

Ash and the group are now headed to Shippou City. As they walk towards onto a bridge, Nurse Joy stops them and informs them that the Clock Tower will not be demolished, only repaired. To their delight, Nurse Joy also informs them that the Darmanitan and the two Darumakka have made the Clock Tower their home. Dent then expressed happiness at the thought of Pokémon and people living in harmony. The group then spots Darmanitan and the two Darumakka standing at the top of the clock tower, smiling and waving at them. The group bids the three Pokémon a final goodbye, before setting off for the [[Shippou Gym|gym]] in Shippou City.

While passing, the Garbage Bag Pokémon, {{p|Yabukuron}}, who was sitting in the middle of the gang, picks up Ash's beloved hat, which has fallen to the ground. Ash and co. try and chase after them as fast as they can, when a woman who calls herself Yuri calls out to them. It appears that she is a teacher at the day-care the children attend, who says she is in trouble. The group follow her to the Day Care in order to listen to her story, but when they arrive there's a surprise! The Day-Care has been surrounded by garbage and turned into a Secret Base by the children, who are hiding inside!

While passing, the Garbage Bag Pokémon, {{p|Yabukuron}}, who was sitting in the middle of the gang, picks up Ash's beloved hat, which has fallen to the ground. Ash and co. try and chase after them as fast as they can, when a woman who calls herself Yuri calls out to them. It appears that she is a teacher at the day-care the children attend, who says she is in trouble. The group follow her to the Day Care in order to listen to her story, but when they arrive there's a surprise! The Day-Care has been surrounded by garbage and turned into a Secret Base by the children, who are hiding inside!

May is eager to win the prize, so the gang decide to enter, and meet up with a girl and her Whismur. But when Jigglypuff decides to perform her song, things may get complicated for the gang, and Team Rocket too.

Monta is a trainer just starting out on his journey with his starter Pokémon {{p|Tsutarja}} who aims to be a "Pokémon Battle Master". After sucessfully capturing a {{p|Minezumi}}, he hears a rustle in the grass and goes to look. To his suprise he finds a Minezumi and {{p|Miruhog}} and decides to capture it. After he attacks the two Pokémon start to run around in circles, he is about to throw another Poké Ball when [[Bel]] and [[Cheren]] appear. Cheren lectures im out what he is doing wrong as Monta is looking up Miruhoggu's [[Pokédex]] entry, and he vows one day he will capture a Miruhoggu.

He uses Tsutarja in a double battle with Cheren's {{p|Pokabu}} against a Bike Gang King's {{p|Wargle}}, it looks like they were about to lose, but they uses a combination attack fainting Wargle. Monta battles Cheren in [[PBW02]] using his {{p|Tsutarja}}, {{p|Hiyappu}} and {{p|Dangoro}} against Cheren's Pokabu, {{p|Yanappu}} and {{p|Basurao}}. With Cheren vast knowledge of Pokémon and triple battles, it looked like Cheren could not lose, but was defeated by a powerful {{m|Rock Slide}} from Dangoro.

In [[PBW03]] he captures an {{p|Emonga}}, suddenly he sees a cave and decides to go inside, he hears a rumble and suddenly a wild {{p|Doryuzu}} appears, he sends out Tsutarja who uses some impressive moves to capture it.

He then sees a Pokémon Ranger and they battle, the Ranger uses his {{p|Zeburaika}} and {{p|Swanna}} against his new Emonga and Tsutarja. The ranger is very powerful and Monta has to recall Tsutarja for Doryuzu after Swanna's attack hit hard. The Ranger underestimated him though and Emonga and Doryuzu were able to knock out their opponents with one hit.

Tsutarja started off with a {{m|Whirlwind}} which dies down before it could reach and gets hurt by Pokabu's {{m|Ember}}. It attacks Basurao with a Vine Whip, but it switches with Pokabu. After Hiyappu uses {{m|Surf}} and defeats Pokabu, he has not noticed that Tsutarja has fainted too.

In [[PMBW03]] it is used to battle an {{p|Emonga}}, he weakens it with {{m|Grass Mixer}} before capturing it. Later the group enter a cave and suddenly the ground starts to rumble and a wild {{p|Doryuzu}} appears and battles Tsutarja. Using some impressive moves such as Grass Mixer and {{m|Pound}}, he is able to capture it.

It is then used in a battle against a Pokémon Ranger's {{p|Zeburaika}} and {{p|Swanna}} with Emonga. It is hurt badly by Swanna's {{m|Aerial Ace}}. It is badly hurt and Monta decides to recall it for {{p|Doryuzu}}.

{{Ash}}, {{an|Brock}}, and [[Max]] step outside the [[Pokémon Center]], ready to depart to [[Fortree City]]. However, {{AP|Pikachu}} warns the group that {{an|May}} isn’t ready yet. Ash goes back inside, finding her just finishing up packing. Still, he scolds May for being too slow, and pushes her out of the center. She stops in front of a mirror, further irritating Ash. May states that its normal to do so, but Ash doesn’t, shocking May. When Ash responds that he isn’t a girl, May condescends him, making Ash even more angry.

As the group walks, Ash and May rant about each other, setting off a direct argument, while the others watch. The group runs into the couple [[Oscar and Andi]], challenging Ash and May to a tag battle, proclaiming the two a [[AdvanceShipping|couple]]. Although both deny the couple connection, Ash and May accept the challenge.

Oscar summons {{p|Nidoking}} while Andi summons {{p|Nidoqueen}}. Ash summons {{AP|Corphish}}. However, May’s pondering for her choice irritates Ash. After deciding, she chooses Skitty. Unfortunately, Corphish and Skitty are unable to work together, canceling each others attacks. Oscar and Andi pull the win when Corphish and Skitty are both hit with {{m|DynamicPunch}} from both Nidoking and Nidoqueen. Ash and May are left bickering.

[[Jessie]], [[James]], and {{MTR}} are sulking about their lack of progress when Oscar and Andi run into them, challenging Jessie and James to the same match as Ash and May. James uses {{TP|James|Cacnea}} while Jessie uses {{TP|Jessie|Seviper}}. Seviper ends up attacking Cacnea, causing Jessie and James to argue, allowing Oscar and Andi to take the win with dual Hyper Beam attacks, sending Team Rocket flying.

Ash and May are still fighting about the loss, blaming each other, while Max and Brock watch. Jessie and James are also bickering. The two arguing groups cross paths, and another tag battle ensures. James teams up with Ash while Jessie takes May. Although Ash and May are hesitant to fight, they decide to accept. The teams use the same Pokémon used in the previous tag battles.

Corphish and Cacnea work better together than Seviper and Skitty, shifting the battle to James and Ash. Jessie starts to get angry at the thought of losing, so she summons {{TP|Jessie|Dustox}}. The guys protest at her breaking the rules, but she doesn’t care. The battle quickly grows out of control when attacks start to fly undirected. Brock declares the women disqualified, but it is meaningless.

While the battle rages on, Meowth and the others watch from behind cover. Meowth realizes that the chaos could allow them to snatch Pikachu, so he manages to stop Jessie and James from fighting long enough to realize it. They create diversionary attacks with Seviper’s Haze and Cacnea’s Sandstorm, allowing Meowth to snag Pikachu in a net.

Team Rocket tries to run, but May’s Skitty uses Assist-turned-String Shot to stop Team Rocket. Corphish protects Skitty from Seviper, rebuilding the trust between Ash and May, allowing them to work together to free Pikachu and send Team Rocket flying as usual. Ash and May apologize to each other, and the fight ends.

== Synopsis ==

On their way to [[Eterna City]], {{Ash}} and {{ashfr|his friends}} encounter a reporter who introduces herself as {{si|Rhonda}} from [[Sinnoh Now]]. {{an|Dawn}} explains to Ash that Sinnoh Now is the most popular television show in the whole [[Sinnoh]] region. Rhonda says that she is doing a news story on a Pokémon Training Camp ahead and also tells them that her main focus is two trainers that truly test the strength of all their challengers, but then she interrupted by her boom operator, Jack, who drops the microphone on her head. Just then, [[Jessie]] appears in front of the camera with a blatant cowgirl disguise, with [[James]] and {{MTR}} in similar disguises nearby. After showing off in front of the camera for a while, Jessie is dragged off by one of the Sinnoh Now staff.

The group then arrive at the camp, and come across two trainers who are talking about their recent loss to the two trainers that Rhonda had mentioned before. Whilst searching for them, the group see a few Pokémon who had just lost against two twin boys with a {{p|Croconaw}} and a {{p|Quilava}}. They introduce themselves as the "Champ Twins", [[Ryan and Bryan]]. When requested to battle, they tell Ash that they only participate in tag battles. Brock explains to Dawn about tag battles, and Dawn agrees to join up with Ash. Ash and Dawn send out {{AP|Turtwig}} and {{TP|Dawn|Piplup}}, respectively, and are ready to battle when the Sinnoh Now staff appear again to introduce the twins to the camera. Jack drops the microphone on Rhonda's head again, who angrily warns him not to do it again. The trainers agree to let Rhonda film the battle.

Ryan's Quilava begins the battle by using {{m|Flame Wheel}}, which Ash's Turtwig dodges. Quilava attacks again, but this time when Turtwig dodges, it accidentally runs into Dawn's Piplup. Ash and Dawn start arguing, and in their haste to recover, Piplup trips and collides with Turtwig yet again. The two trainers argue even more, with their Pokémon exchanging attacks. Even when Bryan's Croconaw attacks them both with {{m|Water Gun}}, they still continue to attack each other. Croconaw and Quilava attack again, until both Turtwig and Piplup are knocked out, and the twins are declared the winners.

Afterwards, Ash and Dawn continue to argue, and as do their Pokémon. {{AP|Pikachu}} uses its {{m|Thunderbolt}} to break up the brawl, then Turtwig and Piplup make up. After some encouragement from {{an|Brock}} and their Pokémon, Ash and Dawn make up as well. The two agree to battle the twins again, and try to work out a strategy.

Meanwhile, [[Team Rocket]] are sitting in the forest, and set Ryan and Bryan's Croconaw and Quilava as their next targets.

Ryan and Bryan walk through the forest, and see lots of fruit and berries arranged on a table. They run towards it, when suddenly they fall into a pit trap. Team Rocket arrive in their balloon, reciting their motto, then they grab the twins' Pokémon. The twins pursue Team Rocket, and when they encounter Ash and his friends, they tell them that their Pokémon had just been stolen. Ash sends out his {{AP|Staravia}}, who punctures the balloon with its {{m|Quick Attack}}. When the group catch up with Team Rocket, Jessie and James send out {{TP|Jessie|Seviper}} and {{TP|James|Carnivine}} to battle. Seviper and Carnivine attack, but Turtwig and Piplup dodge and strike back and send Team Rocket flying.

Ash and Dawn begin their second battle with the twins, but this time combining their moves and dodging most of the twins' attacks, with Rhonda reporting all the while. Eventually, after a long battle, Ash and Dawn emerge as the victors. Rhonda tells the group that she is only going the air the second battle, to which Ash and Dawn are pleased. The episode ends with Ash and his friends continuing their journey to Eterna City.

Katie is the pride of [[Lilycove City]], where her fashion and flair have given her the nickname "cool beauty". In battle, she most commonly uses {{p|Venomoth}} and {{p|Golduck}} and is known for carefully analyzing her opponent's moves.

Katie's battle style was different from many other typical Trainers in the anime. Instead of sticking with one Pokémon in battle until it fainted, she would switch out her Pokémon for a stronger one if hers had a disadvantage. It was due to this strategy that she nearly defeated Ash in the first part of their battle.

==Jigglypuff==

The first recurring wild Pokémon in the anime, and the one that made the most appearances, is {{an|Jigglypuff}}.

Jigglypuff's first appearance was in ''[[EP045|The Song of Jigglypuff]]''. At first it couldn't {{m|sing}}, but that changed once [[Brock]] gave it a piece of fruit which soothed its throat. Jigglypuff started following the gang throughout their journey until during the {{series|Advanced Generation}}. It set a goal to accomplish what it had failed to in the first episode: to have someone listen to its song in its entirety without falling asleep.

Jigglypuff is perhaps best known, however, for its running gag. Whenever it saw that its song put its listeners to sleep, it would inflate angrily, making a distinctive "honk" sound, then doodle over the faces of its audience with its marker.

As it turns out, [[Team Rocket]] had found it and had traded it to the [[Magikarp salesman]] for a {{DL|List of Pokémon temporarily owned by Team Rocket|Magikarp}}. After learning this, the kids confronted the salesman and demanded he give back the pearl. Team Rocket also demanded he give them the pearl back as well. In the ensuing battle, Spoink's pearl was returned and Team Rocket was sent blasting off.

It made its second, and final, appearance in ''[[AG093|Clamperl of Wisdom]]''. Like the previous time, it had lost its pearl. This time, it was lost in the ocean without any way of retrieving it. But the kids learned from a scientist named [[Isaiah]] that Spoink's pearls come from {{p|Clamperl}}. Eventually, they found a Clamperl who was willing to give its pearl to Spoink. They said goodbye to Spoink, and it hasn't been seen since that episode.

After losing its pearl, Spoink has a habit of using {{m|Psychic}} to move any round objects (and after a while, even not-so-round objects) on its head, including an angry {{p|Electrode}}, much to the dismay of those around it. It developed a friendship with [[Ash's Torkoal]] during its adventures with the group.

It was then discovered that Hippopotas was lost and he was separated from the rest of the Hippopotas and Hippowdon. Ash and friends helped Hippopotas find his way back to the herd. Like a few other Pokémon, Hippopotas seemed to like to be carried on top of Ash's head.

[[Jessie]] had trouble saying the Pokémon's species name; she and her [[Team Rocket]] fellows attempted to steal Hippopotas for their boss.

Hippopotas's final appearance was in ''[[DP065|Sleight of Sand!]]'' with his father {{p|Hippowdon}}. In this episode, [[Butch]] and [[Cassidy]] also wanted to kidnap the Hippo Pokémon.

Hippopotas's gender was confirmed in his first appearance, due to his coloration. Unlike other Pokémon, Hippopotas have completely different colors depending on gender.

It was used in Ash's battle against [[Palace Maven Spenser|Spenser]] in the following episode, ''[[AG164|Ka Boom With A View]]'', where it won Ash the [[Symbol|Spirit Symbol]] after learning a new move, {{m|SolarBeam}}.

Sceptile has since become one of Ash's most powerful Pokémon, even strong enough to hold its own in battle against certain [[legendary Pokémon]]. It is exceptionally fast and a good jumper. Sceptile also has a habit of keeping a twig in his mouth. He is also a bit of a loner, and can often be seen sitting alone on the branch of a tree, resting or looking at the sky. Both of these habits were carried over from when Sceptile was a Treecko. Despite this, Sceptile is a competitive battler, almost never turning down a fight. Sceptile was one of the five Pokémon that Ash took with him on his journey to the {{Gdis|Battle Frontier|III}}.

In ''[[AG191|Once More With Reeling]]'' it fought in the [[Terracotta Town|Terracotta]] {{pkmn|Contest}} final against [[May's Blaziken]]. The battle resulted in a tie where both May and Ash won the ribbon. This is the most recent battle Sceptile has fought under Ash's command.

Ash left Sceptile at [[Professor Oak]]'s lab before setting off to [[Sinnoh]].

===Sinnoh===
Ash used Sceptile, battling against [[Takuto]] in the semi-finals of the [[Suzuran Conference]] in [[DP189]]. It managed to use several attacks against Takuto's {{p|Darkrai}}, including a newly-revealed attack, {{m|Leaf Storm}}, putting up an good fight against the legendary Pokémon. Although Darkrai uses {{m|Dark Void}} on it, it managed to snap out of it immediately, shocking Takuto. It then managed to defeat Takuto's Darkrai with a powerful {{m|Leaf Blade}} attack. Although it battled hard it was unable to defeat Takuto's next Pokémon, {{p|Latios}}, becoming Ash's fourth Pokémon to fall in his semi-final battle against Takuto.

* Sceptile keeping a twig in his mouth is much like a 番長 ''banchō'', a juvenile gang leader, a character type that was common in {{wp|manga}} and {{wp|anime}} in the sixties and early seventies.
* Sceptile has learned a new Grass-type move in each of its evolutions: Bullet Seed as Treecko, Leaf Blade as Grovyle, and SolarBeam as Sceptile. All of these moves have been used recently.
* Sceptile has been referred to as male in episodes such as ''[[AG007|Tree's a Crowd]]'' and ''[[AG161|Odd Pokémon Out]]'', but only in the English dub. However, a female Treecko in ''[[AG034|Having a Wailord of a Time]]'' was shown to have a crush on Ash's Treecko, which may confirm its gender in other languages.
